President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, in Sokoto described those calling him enemy of the North, as liars who have nothing to offer the region. The President also said his administration had achieved a lot in the area of transforming the educational and agricultural sectors across the Northern states. The President, who spoke during the campaign rally in Sokoto State at Shehu Kangiwa Square, said his administration had achieved more for the North than any other administration led by former Presidents of Nigeria. His words: “When I came on board as president, I established 14 new universities, four were built in the South while 10 were built in the North, yet they keep telling you I hate the North. If truly I hate the North and I do not want the children from the North to be like me, will I take such action?” the President asked. He went further: “Federal Government has no business with basic primary education because they are functions of the state government, but I took it upon myself to build Almajiri schools here because we realised there is a higher percentage of children out of school in the North than in the South. So we intervened massively. Is that hating the North? “In the area of agriculture, tell me of any government that has supported the North with several agricultural equipment and with billions in cash loans. Is that hating the North? If I don’t like the North, will they benefit up to 70 per cent of agricultural reforms we are doing?” he asked. He said those claiming that he was against the North themselves really had nothing to offer the region. His words: “Those who say I do not like the North were also presidents in the past, but what did they do for the North? How many schools or universities did they build in the North and what did they do to ameliorate the problems in the agricultural sector?” President Jonathan, however, called on politicians in the state to shun the act of violence at the forthcoming elections. He said: “We must learn to exhibit the spirit of sportsmanship in politics because on my arrival this morning, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Saadu Abubakar, drew my attention to the unwarranted rivalry that existed among political parties in the state and he condemned the development in its entirety. Stressing further, he said: “I visited Ogun State recently and the state Governor, Ibikunle Amusun, who is of the opposition party accommodated me at the Governor’s Lodge, where both of us passed the night without any rancour. I believe this is what politics should be.” In their goodwill messages, former Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa and the Deputy Governor of the state, Barrister Mukhtar Shagari promised to deliver the state 100 per cent to Jonathan at the forthcoming polls. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/01/im-not-enemy-north-jonathan/ |

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola SAN (roof top), during the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Mega Rally at Open Round about, by Post Office, Apapa, Lagos, on Friday. Fashola who disclosed this at the second Mega rally of the All Progressives Party, APC, in Apapa axis of the state, lamented that the party at the centre (PDP) has failed to fulfill all the promises it made to the residents of Lagos four years ago. The governor said, “We are building the Lekki Deep Sea port, the investors have brought their own share of the required fund and Lagos State Government has provided the land. But it is saddening that the central government has failed to fulfill its own side of the bargain which was to providing $117 million of the total cost of the project.” He added, “Rather than handover this fund for this project which will create employment, Federal Government was busy transferring the fund elsewhere. Fashola lamented that the FG had failed to yield to the plight of the citizens, saying, “It is alarming that traders spend several days before they could clear their goods from the Tin Can and Apapa Ports. And this has continued because the PDP-led Federal Government has mismanaged the ports.” The governor also blamed the Federal government for what he called “unprofessional act” as being responsible “for investors who were planning to withdraw about N1.7 trillion from the country’s economy.” Fashola queried, “The mismanagement of the country’s economy and the inability to address insurgency must have been responsible for the withdrawal of this huge fund.” Buhari not too old to rule Nigeria The governor also faulted the claims by some critics that APC Presidential candidate, Major General Muhammadu Buhari is too old to rule Nigeria. He stressed that Buhari is not too old to govern the country, but what Nigerians needed now is a trusted and credible candidate who can properly manage the nation’s resources. The governor argued that current development in the country has shown that a younger person without big ideas and competence cannot rule Nigeria successfully. Fashola said the nation’s most challenging problems are insecurity and corruption which, he said could only be tackled by Buhari given his track records. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/01/mega-rally-fashola-accuses-jonathan-stalling-1-354bn-lekki-deep-sea-port/

President Goodluck Jonathan has postponed the inauguration of his Campaign Organisation, which was earlier slated for Monday. The announcement came a little late as, according to reports, members of the organisation and guests were already seated at the venue before the announcement. The Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Prof. Rufai Alkali, announced the postponement at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign office and venue of the inauguration. According to him, it was was rescheduled following the death of Jonathan’s younger sister, Mrs Nancy Jonathan-Olei, on Sunday. “As you are all aware, His Excellency lost his sister, Nancy Jonathan-Olei, yesterday morning,” said Alkali. “In view of this, the president has decided to suspend this inauguration for today until tomorrow at 11 a.m. “Mr President has asked me to convey his apologies for the inconveniences this postponement has caused and to tell you it was due to circumstances beyond our control,” he said. Members waiting to be inaugurated, as well as guests and party chiefs observed a minute silence for the deceased. President Jonathan had been expected to inaugurate the committee he constituted for his campaign on Monday at 2pm. He had selected Chairman of the Board of trustees of the PDP, Tony Anenih, to be the national campaign adviser, while a former National Chairman of the PDP, Ahmadu Ali, will serve as the Director-General of the campaign organisation. A former minister, Tunde Adeniran, will serve as deputy director general of the campaign’s head office, while the duo of Special Duties Minister, Kabiru Turaki and ex-Anambra governor, Peter Obi, will serve as Deputy Directors-General for north and south respectively. A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani- Kayode, is the Director of Media and Publicity, while former Information Minister, Jerry Gana will lead the team’s contact and mobilization unit. www.informationng.com/2015/01/inauguration-of-jonathans-campaign-team-postponed-over-sisters-death.html www.thisdaylive.com/articles/jonathans-campaign-team-inauguration-postponed-over-sisters-death/198453/

Annabelle If you went into "Annabelle" wanting to see something along the lines of "Child's Play" or at the very least, a doll-centric horror movie where dolls are either animated in some fashion or at the very least, trip someone as they walk down the stairs, then you will be savagely disappointed. On the other hand, if you were a fan of the small snippet of Annabelle's story shown in "The Conjuring" and wanted a terrifying and in-depth origins story, then you…will be disappointed as well. |
Award season contenders, they ain't. Lots of movies fall flat every year, with some failing to make enough money to justify their production and others getting horrible reviews (which can often cause the crappy box office). This are my worst movies of 2014. Add yours. 1. I, Frankenstein Not even Aaron Eckhart's abs could save this gothic thriller, which was released in January (generally known as the worst time for movies). 2. Vampire Academy Despite its big fan following, the box office take and the reviews of this adaptation were abysmal. 3. Left Behind Poor Nicolas Cage. This drama only eked out two percent on the Tomatometer. 4. A Haunted House 2 The scariest thing about this silly horror spoof is how poorly it was received. 5. Ride Along Another movie that proved January is a cursed time to release a movie. 6. The Legend of Hercules As we have established, the greatest abs in all the land cannot save your movie. Not even Kellan Lutz's. |
