OAU STUDENTS REACT TO THE FORCEFUL EVICTION AND ARREST OF COLLEAGUES.

Students of Obafemi Awolowo University have reacted to the eviction of students in the female hostels and the arrest of some of the comrades, who came to the aid of the evicted students, as reported by OAU KILONSHELE earlier today.

Our correspondent confirmed the lock of the three out of the Four entrances to Awolowo hall of residence by students residing there.

A final year student, who pleaded to be anonymous, told OAU KILONSHELE that the last entrance was kept opened only for students.

"If the management try to come to Awolowo hall, we will show them the stuff we made of." He said.

As at the time of filing this report, the Five students arrested are in detainment at Moore police station, Ile-ife. All attempts to secure their release by their colleagues proved abortive.


Anon, Omole Ibukun, one of the students suspended last year for participanting in a protest, condemned the arrest of the students by the management. According to him, the act is to make silent the agitations of students against ant-students policies.

"They believe they can proceed with the eviction exercise by keeping those comrades in police detention."
However, in a report signed by Babatunde Oyatokun, the Chief security Officer of the university, the students were arrested for alleged assault and harassment of the hall warden, Mrs Adeyemo, and other officers during the process of sending students out.

"A student named Gbenga Oloniran led a group of students that invaded, harassed and assaulted the hall security assistant and held hostage the warden of Moremi hall." The report read.

The list of other students apprehended includes; Oyedeji Samson, a part 3 student of Pharmacy; Olajide Adedamola, Jimoh Oladipupo and Adeniji John.

An eyewitness account by a student, Kewuyemi Ope, revealed that the allegations against the students are false. He released audio and video recordings of the speech made by the primal alleged, Gbenga Oloniran.

"None of the arrested students moved closer to the officers not to talk of harrassing or assaulting any of them." He stated.

The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University has began the process of forcing out students from its hostels in a bid to renovate the buildings.
PREMIUM TIMES learnt that officials of the schools began to ‘throw’ the luggage of students out of the halls of residence after a short notice was issued 24 hours earlier. The officials also sealed the doors of the rooms afterwards.
A confrontation erupted at the Moremi hall, a female hostel, earlier today where some students including student activists and journalists were reportedly manhandled.
Gbenga Oloniran, the secretary of the Anti Neo-liberal attacks against Students Association (ANSA), and a female student were reportedly ‘arrested’ by the security unit of the university.
The school vacated February 17 but students writing their final year projects and those undergoing their SIWES and Teaching Practice (TP) programmes are still on campus.
Ayodeji Fridaus, who witnessed the forceful eviction at Moremi hall, told PREMIUM TIMES that the officers were not ”considerate enough as they threw students loads from the topmost floor”.
“Some of us are on campus because of SIWES. Where do they want us to go?” she said.
Also, an occupant of Moremi hall, Miss Akinremi, a final year student, complained that she is yet to finish her final year project. She said her property including her mattress were flung out by rampaging officials.
Halimat Busayo, who resides at the Alumni hall also narrated a similar tale of eviction.
The hall warden of Alumni hall, who did not give her name explained the reason for the action. She said that ”the order (for eviction) came from the school management for renovation purposes”.
“The hostels were renovated when these students came in. They should also allow us to renovate when new ones are coming in,” she said.
The Dean of Division of Students Affairs (DSA), Isiaka Aransi, who showed up later in the company of the school’s chief security officer at the scene of conflict in Moremi simply instructed the students to move out immediately.A three-hour-ultimatum was subsequently given to students occupying halls of residence to leave.

The governor said; “We have heard stories of alleged diversion of foods and relief materials meant for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North-East to Chad and Niger Republic, about 200 tons of dates donated by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for distribution to the IDPs sold in the open market in Abuja and most importantly, use of the IDPs camps by top government officials to perpetrate monumental fraud. As long as fight against Boko Haram remains a business venture, providing cheap money for top officials of this government, the insurgency will continue.

“The anti-corruption watchdog, Transparency International said last year that corruption in the military was weakening Nigeria’s efforts to battle Boko Haram.

“In Transparency International’s words; ‘corrupt military officials have been able to benefit from the conflict through the creation of fake defense contracts, the proceeds of which are often laundered abroad in the UK, U.S. and elsewhere.’

“In its own report, the US Department of State’s Bureau for Counterterrorism and Countering Violent Extremism said that the inability of security agencies in Nigeria to share intelligence report because of animosity is affecting the success in the fight against Boko Haram.

“The public disagreement between the army and police over the security arrangements that were in place in Dapchi and other communities in Yobe State a few days before the Boko Haram attack that led to the abduction of the 110 girls has further lend credence to the position of the US Department of State’s Bureau for Counterterrorism and Countering Violent Extremism.

“President Buhari must therefore have to look inward and purge his government of those benefitting from the insurgency is indeed he desires that it should end.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has extended the tenure of the national working committee (NWC) of the party led by John Oyegun by 12 months.

The decision was taken at the national executive council (NEC) meeting on Tuesday.

Speaking at the end of the NEC meeting, Yahaya Bello, governor of Kogi state, said the extension would take effect from June 30.

“The NEC met today and major decisions in line with the constitution of the party. We all aware that the tenure of current NWC and the executive members of this party both elected and appointed come to an end June this year,” he said.

“Considering the time left for the party to conduct all the congresses and conventions and considering that our leader Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been charged with the responsibility of reconciling all aggrieved members of our party, we cannot afford to approach the general election with more disputes and crises adding that party have decided on line with article 13 which empowers the NEC to carry out the functions of its convention and the NEC has decided to extend the tenure of current NWC other executive committees at various levels for another 12months starting from June 30th.”

TheCable had reported pro-Buhari governors impressed it on the president that it was better to elongate Oyegun’s tenure than risk a new convention that could further fracture the party.

Bola Tinubu, national leader of the ruling party, had accused the chairman of sabotaging his efforts to reconcile aggrieved members of the APC.

But speaking at the presidential villa in Abuja on Friday, Bello said governors and many members of the ruling party have confidence in Oyegun.

The Osun state joint Public Service has declared an indefinite strike on Friday 22nd December 2017 in a report which was signed by the labour chairman and other memebers.
The labor union declared an indefinite strike due to the refusal of the govenment of Osun state to ascend to their demands.
It was gathered that the state government failed to acede the demands of the workers in which was filed in a letter issued on Tuesday 5th December, 2017.
The workers of Osun state are directed to commence an indefinite strike on 27th of December.

The students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic known as
MAPOLY have taken to the streets to protest towards their displeasure over the inactivity of the school for months. In a protest tagged "Black Week" . The protest called Black week started on Monday 18th of December,2017. Which is meant to last for a whole week.
As at yesterday, the student of Mapoly blocked all roads leading to the governors office including Pansek, Oke Ilewo and Kuto Area of the state capital. As vehicular movements were restricted in the region of the protest.
The aggrieved students moved with Black Cards and majority in
Black T-shirt . The students moved down the roads singing gyration songs while some were placing blackcards with inscription "bring back our exam"
It was learnt that the aggrieved student stoned and beat up an officer of the Nigeria Police Force. Also some students were reportedly arrested by men of the Nigeria police force. At the later end, the arrest was stalled by the radical students present at the event. L
ater on, some students moved to the newly established Ogun State Polytechnic in Ipokia in the regards of their protest.
Earlier today, the students of Mapoly have continued their Black week. It was learnt that the aggrieved student protested at the Panseke Axis of the state capital today. In which they continued their fight towards the inactivity of the school for months.
As at Press time there was no casualty and the state government is yet to address the issue.

Russian-speaking hackers are suspected of stealing nearly $10m (£7.5m) from 20 companies in Russia, the UK and US.
The MoneyTaker group removed overdraft limits on debit cards and took money from cash machines, according to a report by cybersecurity firm Group-IB .
It also stole documentation for technology used by more than 200 banks in the US and Latin America.
The documents could be used in future attacks by the hackers, according to the report.
Group-IB has worked with both Europol and the Russian government to investigate cybercrime.
Kevin Curran, an independent expert and professor of cybersecurity at Ulster University, said the attacks were "as sophisticated as it gets at this moment in time".
"It really is perfect in some ways," he told the BBC. "They're able to compromise systems and then extract all the documents for how a banking system works so that they have the intelligence needed to produce fraudulent payments."
MoneyTaker - named by Group-IB after the group's custom malware - has reportedly netted an average of $500,000 in 16 attacks against US companies and $1.2m in three attacks against Russian banks since May 2016.
It also targeted a UK-based software and service provider in December 2016, according to the report.
The Financial Conduct Authority and UK Finance declined to comment when contacted by the BBC.
'Eliminating their traces'
MoneyTaker avoided detection "by constantly changing their tools and tactics" and "eliminating their traces after completing their operations", according to a statement from Group-IB.
In its earliest-known attack, the group compromised First Data's Star network - a debit card processing system used by more than 5,000 banks.
The attackers then removed or increased cash withdrawal and overdraft limits on legally opened credit and debit cards. "Money mules" were sent to withdraw funds from cash machines.
The group used a combination of publicly available tools and custom-written malware to access banking systems - including "file-less" software that is stored in a computer's memory rather than its hard drive, where it can be more easily detected, according to Group-IB.
In at least one instance, the group used the home computer of a Russian bank's system administrator to access its internal network, according to the report.

Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University , Ile -Ife , who were recently suspended by the management of the institution , have kicked against the allegation that they were involved in criminal activities .
The leadership of the Students’ Union of the university , who spoke on their behalf on Monday , said the suspended students did not engage in any criminal activity .
The student leaders argued that the affected students were suspended for expressing their displeasure over the poor welfare conditions on the university campus.
They said this in a press statement jointly signed by the President of the union , Oyekan Ibukun ; its Secretary - General , Boluwajaiye Adeoluwa , and Public Relations Officer , Okediji Simon .
The OAU authority on Friday announced the suspension of four undergraduates of the university over alleged involvement in criminal activities and a breach of the university’ s code of conduct , among other offences .
The students , who condemned the suspension, complained that two postgraduate students were also suspended for also protesting .
The statement read in part , “ The leadership of OAU Students’ Union and the entire students of the university hereby use this medium to vehemently condemn the illegal and unjustifiable suspension of four undergraduates and two postgraduate students by the university management .
“ It is very appalling that the university management could brand students ’ peaceful protest and agitation against prevalent poor welfare conditions on campus on October 5 , as ‘ criminal activities ’ . We want to state categorically that the students currently on suspension have never committed any criminal offence as earlier posited by the university authority .They merely exercised their right to freedom of peaceful demonstration as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria ( as amended) and any attempt to curtail such rights is null and void .
“ We use this medium to debunk the lies and allegations that have been made against our members . It must be clearly asserted that the students only embarked on a peaceful protest and what followed was their indefinite suspension from the University . We cannot allow this injustice to stand, as injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere .”
The students demanded that the six students be reinstated.
