The Governor of Ekiti state and the First Lady of Nigeria, Aisha Buhari have been caught up in what many can call a dirty dance, one that the Nigerian people cannot stop talking about. Governor Fayose had relived a scandal involving the presidents wife. Fayose stressed on Monday, June 20, the alleged role played by Buhari’s wife, in the messy bribery scandal involving Williams Jefferson, a US Congressman. The Ekiti state governor distributed a link to the US Department of Justice’s website holding court documents where Aisha Buhari was alleged to have transferred suspicious funds to a convicted former American congressman, Williams Jefferson. In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, Fayose said President Buhari was far from being a clean man. Fayose’s statement on Aisha’s involvement comes on the heels of a development in which the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had to freeze his account. A source was also said to have disclosed that the governor’s account in Zenith Bank in Ekiti as well as those of some of his associates were also frozen by the anti-graft agency. After visiting the bank at Onigari, GRA area of the state capital, Fayose described the action as illegal and while citing section 308 of the 1999 constitution, the governor stated that the federal government should fight corruption within the ambit of the law, since he enjoys immunity as a sitting governor. He said: “I got mind of the fact that the EFCC had placed restriction order on my personal account and that of my associates. I came here today and I have been able to see it. This action shows that this government has no respect for the constitution because I enjoy immunity under Section 308.“I support government fighting corruption, but it has to be within the ambit of the law. You can investigate me, it is their right, but they have to wait till 2018, because I will be done by then. They should not be in a hurry because I will personally come to them for investigation.” In reaction to Fayose’s comments, the EFCC has said that immunity does not stop the commission from investigating suspicious account belonging to any governor. Wilson Uwujaren, the spokesman for the EFCC in reaction to the governor’s immunity claims, said the immunity being enjoyed by any governor does not prevent the commission from investigating suspicious movements of money into their accounts. Meanwhile, in reply to Fayose’s accusation, Aisha Buhari reportedly called the governor a dog, a mad one at that. She went on to threaten that the Ekiti state governor must take back his words or face her personally in court. While the dance of Aisha and Fayose was still on, a case of election funding scandal cropped- up. The EFCC had on Monday, June 20, frozen two personal accounts of the governor and one belonging to his company, Spotless Investments, in the course of its investigations into N4.7billion Fayose allegedly received from the Office of the National Security Adviser during his election campaign in 2014. Fayose denied receiving any money, claiming it was Zenith Bank that majorly funded his campaign. However, Zenith Bank denied its involvement in Fayose’s governorship campaign. It was in the wake of this that Fayose challenged Zenith Bank to come out with an official statement showing the bank’s denial about funding his election in 2014 The governor referred APC, Zenith bank and the EFCC some Bible verses, saying he stands by his claim that the bank majorly funded in election in June 2014. With the entire drama getting messier by the day degenerating into the kneeling of alleged Bank officials before Fayose, Nigerians took to social media to speak on the highly controversial issue. Below are some reactions of Nigerians to the dirty dance within Nigeria’s corridors of power. “I believe Nigeria needs an investigative public hearing on the roles of Nigeria’s corporations in politics,to expose their relationships with politicians.Because if a bank can use depositors’ funds to finance an election, then there is a problem with us.It is irresponsible, unethical and illegal. Who knows this might be one of the reasons banks fail and throw people out of jobs without benefits? With this revelation Fayose is as guilty as the bank and should be impeached because the means through which he got elected was illegal and thereby his election is null and void ab initio. Please, attack the message and not the messenger,” GRasaq Adeshina opined. Chukwu Emeka Nwachukwu said: “EFCC froze the account of a sitting governor during the regime of GEJ, governor Nyako was some so called enemy of him his account was frozen and impeached illegally heaven didn’t fall. Now even people who borrowed money to buy data are against EFCC shame to people leaving with ignorance.” Nwafor Ndubueze Vincent was of the opinion that “It is obvious that the EFCC is becoming unnecessarily obedient to Mr president. Making people panic, hunting down any perceived enemy for reasons very irrelevant. Why is it that the zenith bank is afraid to admit that they funded his election when they know they did? Every sector in this country is now collaborating with the EFCC and the president to prosecute people.” “People do apply for loan in a bank, provided you meet up the loan terms bank will not hesitate to grant you that. So if fayose’s election is sponsored by zenith bank is not a crime. After all other private enterprise do sponsor politicians. Mind you most all this banks are owned by politicians,” Emeka Moses Okereke noted. Emiliamary Ogochi debated that “If he had done his duty well and not be intruding in others affairs, he wouldn’t have encounter this incidence. I believe the initiative behind the action of the EFCC is to know what and where the money he is receiving for his state is going to, that he couldn’t pay the workers salary for many months while having so much in his bank account. He have to answer for every penny, how its generated.” He couldn’t pay his staff salary but spend time abusing governments in media like he is perfect. I think this is the reason behind the freezing of his account and the rattling of the activities in his accounts. The biblical verse I think is also for him too. I wish he have been perfect to be worthy of advising or admonishing the government on media,” Ogochi further stressed. Titilayomi Banjo Adebayo was of the opinion that “Its all propaganda, they came to visit him & he made it look like they came to beg him, making one of d officials to knee down. Mr Fayose pls stop using lies to cover lies. Nigerians are nt fools. Olisa Metuh & Femi Fani- Kayode did d same thing but by d time they were faced wt facts & figures they starting pleading to refund all d looted funds. All dis ranting cannot save u, ur time is up.” Jude Dorchman was stunned, he said: “Even Banks are now being used in spreading their propaganda also? Shame on you zenith bank, shame on you APC, shame on you PMB and your government for bringing so much hatred and bigotry on our once striving and harmonious society, we’ve never had it this bad before historically and some idiots are justifying all these militarization and raping of our democracy just to score a cheap political goal.” Oparaeke Remigius noted that hatred for PMB and sentiments is seriously affecting peoples sense of reasoning. He said: “The same Fayose that went to China concocted a podium and said he was addressing investors, I pity Ekiti people a governor that has made ranting, gossiping and making trouble here and their his main priority I wonder when he’ll have time to attend to affairs of the state which was the he was elected, OK sorry I just remembered he is on strike.” Afolabi Oladele said: “The statement that bank came to beg you for financing or sponsoring your election of almost two years is meant for your goons in Ekiti. Your character had blindfolded you to the extent you think all other person reason the way you do. When 419ners send their bates out into their market, It only catches people who are daft and reason below their level. Paste your latest news on the wall of houses of Ekiti workers. If they came to beg you, what about the money in the account when you told the whole world how poor you became when you were flushed out as Ekiti state Governor in your first term and less than 24 months you become a billionaire while salaries and pension were suspended, hiding under noises of Buhari to steal Ekiti dry.” An Ekiti state indigene called Fasanmi Olanrewaju said: “Fellow Nigerians, I am a typical Ekiti man and I know what’s going on in Ekiti politics. It’s a pity that Ekiti people voted for a hooligan, he has no respect for elders or even the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Let Fayose explain to all Nigerians what he did with N9.6 billions bail-out he collected, let him explain what he did with money he collected from sixteen local government in Ekiti state immediately he was sworn in, let him tell the whole world what he did with N10 billions loan he borrowed for fly over in Ado Ekiti etc. I am living very close to his house in Magodo GRA, the 2015 Range – Rover his son is cruising around, how did that boy get the money? These idiots have finished this country, people are dying of hunger in Ekiti on daily basis and this man doesn’t want to hear anything about Ekiti people. Anyway, I am really enjoying the drama in the state. Fayose, pls, subject these people to more hardship. In fact, no governor can treat the igbos like that because they are hardworking and highly intelligent, that’s the reason why I am in support of Biafra, because of non payment of six months salaries they couldn’t feed themselves! This is the best time for Ekiti people to wake up from their slumber.” Martin Ifietekha Anegbeh sent a warning saying: “Don’t forget the Bank denied funding and sponsor his election as he claimed. Therefore, for the Zenith Bank management official visit to beg the Governor Fayose means the governor is right but they were afraid of our democratic military Dictator President Buhari. We wish the president can as well send his wife to visit USA to prove Gov, Fayose wrong.” George Olayode was of the opinion that “This is common-sense, how could an organisation as big as a bank could go and be begging a costumer in his own abode or where ever he is, The sheet governor can say that to his stomach infrastructure people in his village Ekiti people wake up from your slumber.Fayose had 419 you all sorry.” Dennis Uzim felt compelled to lend his voice to the argument, he said: “Naivity has taken over the social media space,” adding that “for the fact that Zenith Bank management visited Governor under no duress at this inopportuned moment speaks volumes about the fact that the Bank was hand-in-glove with power that be to rope-in Fayose in some non- existing financial sleaze.” “For those who are blabbing that Governor Fayose stage managed this meeting or booby- trapped the bank management with undisclosed publicity during & after the meeting, I want to assure you that the governor works in a high public office with the paraphernalia of publicity blitz so the Zenith Bank management knew what they were walking into,” Denis argued. Ekiti State governor, Mr Peter Ayodele Fayose, has said that the parlous state of the nation’s economy will continue throughout the tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari, causing the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government to fail woefully. He gave this assertion in his address during the thanksgiving service marking the first anniversary of the fifth assembly of the Ekiti State House of Assembly at the Government House Chapel, Ado- Ekiti, on Sunday. Fayose said he decided to go on solidarity strike with the workers in the state when it dawned on him that the Federal Government had failed and would continue to fail in revamping the nation’s economy. “I am not a prophet of doom, but I must tell you the truth. It is this economic downturn that will pull down the Buhari-led government. Mark my word. The economy will improve, but it will be too late in the life of the Buhari-led government. God is angry with the Buhari-led government. It is shedding the blood of too many innocent people. “Soldiers would enter the home of poor village people and gun them down in cold blood. There is too much of blood-shedding. Look at what they did to that innocent woman in Kano. I am telling you that God allowed them to get into government so that they would be exposed; so that everyone would see their inability and hypocrisy,” he said. |

Delta State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chieftain, Chief Sunny Onuesoke has foreseen that come 2019 when PDP must have taking over leadership of the Presidency of the country and All Progressive Congress (APC) would have realize the harm they did to Nigerians, the party would come crawling on it kneels apologizing to Nigerians and PDP as a party for their deceptive promises and the hardship they have created for Nigerians. While reacting to the statement of an APC Chieftain who said “Nigeria will beg Buhari to come back in 2019”, Onuesoke who spoke to group of journalists in Abuja, on Friday argued that instead of Nigerians to beg Buhari to stay, APC would rather apologise to Nigerians and PDP for putting Nigerians in the present hardship. He said what is happening in the country presently is testimony that APC do not have anything to provide for betterment of the life of the people . Onuesoke maintained that he is very confident that PDP will win the Presidency in 2019 and return Nigeria back to past glory which they have benefitted from the party in term of adherence to rule of law, low inflation rate, provision of power, low exchange rate, cheap fuel, provision of cheap food and other comfort of life which are presently lacking. The truth is that people are suffering a lot of hardship now but this was not the promise. The campaign promise was to bring down the cost of fuel, create jobs, naira to be at par with dollar, provide electricity and other social which have presently become illusive,” Onuesoke lamented. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/06/apc-will-apologise-nigerians-pdp-2019-onuesoke/ |
From political leaders to sports figures to Hollywood’s A-list, the world paused to remember “The Greatest,” whose remarkable career spanned three decades, and whose battle with illness later in life moved his fans. He was to be buried in Louisville, with funeral arrangements to be announced on Saturday. The city lowered flags to half-staff in his honor early Saturday, as fans flocked to his modest childhood home, now a museum, to pay their respects and leave flowers. – ‘Ali stood his ground’ – Muhammad Ali “Muhammad Ali was The Greatest. Period,” Obama said in an unusually personal statement in which he said he keeps a pair of Ali’s boxing gloves and a photo in his private study. The US president hailed Ali for his integrity, saying he “stood up when it was hard; spoke out when others wouldn’t.” “His fight outside the ring would cost him his title and his public standing. It would earn him enemies on the left and the right, make him reviled, and nearly send him to jail. But Ali stood his ground,” Obama said. “And his victory helped us get used to the America we recognize today.” Ali was hospitalized in the Phoenix area on Thursday with what his spokesman said was a respiratory ailment, but his condition quickly deteriorated, and his family came to his bedside. “After a 32-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, Muhammad Ali has passed away at the age of 74,” spokesman Bob Gunnell said Friday. Ali had been living in the Phoenix area with his fourth wife, Lonnie, who he married in 1986. He was survived by nine children, seven daughters and two sons. “He just represents everything that was good about mankind and it’s sad to see him go,” said fan James Brice outside the hospital in Scottsdale, Arizona. Fans also gathered in Los Angeles to snap photos and leave flowers at Ali’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Ali had been hospitalized multiple times in recent years. In 2014, he was treated for a mild case of pneumonia and in 2015 for a urinary tract infection. His Parkinson’s, thought to be linked to the thousands of punches he took during a career studded by bruising battles inside the ropes, had limited his public speaking but he continued to make appearances and statements via his entourage. – ‘The greatest of all times’ – Muhammad Ali Ali’s career, which stretched from 1960 to 1981 and saw him retire with a record of 56-5, included such historic bouts as the “Rumble in the Jungle” against George Foreman. Don King promoted that watershed bout in Kinshasa, Zaire, in 1974, in which Ali used his “Rope a Dope” strategy to best Foreman and become just the second fighter ever to regain the heavyweight world title. “His spirit will go on forever,” King said of Ali. “He represents what every athlete and sports person tries to do, an attitude of getting it done, success, he was fabulous.” Other defining moments of Ali’s career included two knockouts of Sonny Liston and his thrilling rivalry with Joe Frazier — which saw the two men slug it out in the ring and verbally spar outside of it. “He hit me with a quick one-two, knocked me down to the canvas and my whole life changed,” Foreman told CNN of the epic “Rumble.” “I was devastated,” he said. “Little did I know I would make the best friend I ever had in my life.” Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson added: “God came for his champion. So long great one. @MuhammadAli #TheGreatest #RIP.” – Conscientious objector – Ali — born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr in Louisville on January 17, 1942 — dazzled fans with slick moves in the ring, and with his wit and engaging persona outside it. He famously said he could he “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” in the ring. He took the name of Muhammad Ali after converting to Islam in 1964, soon after he had stunned the sport by claiming the title with a monumental upset of Liston. He was vilified in some quarters for that conversion and his outspoken stance on Vietnam and civil rights issues. Ali’s refusal to serve in the Vietnam War saw him prosecuted for draft evasion, and led to him being effectively banned for boxing for three years of his prime, but the US Supreme Court overturned his conviction for draft dodging in 1971. But he held firm to his beliefs and eventually earned accolades as an activist. He received the highest US civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in 2005. Ali represented the United Nations as a messenger of peace and was chosen to light the Olympic torch in 1996, when he was already weakened by Parkinson’s — a poignant moment for the sports world. – ‘A giant’ – Celebrities, politicians, reporters that covered him, athletes and of course boxers praised Ali for his superb work in and out of the ring. Floyd Mayweather, who retired from boxing last year with a perfect 49-0 record, recalled the awe he felt in meeting Ali in 1996, when he was a US Olympian. “I didn’t really know what to say. I couldn’t believe it,” Mayweather said. “I didn’t even want to show my true feelings and emotions of how I felt.” Twenty years on, Mayweather was clear on his view of Ali’s legacy — forged inside and outside the ring. “Never be afraid,” Mayweather said. “Never stop believing. And never settle for less.” Mayweather’s great rival Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines said the world had lost “a giant.” “Boxing benefitted from Muhammad Ali’s talents, but not as much as mankind benefitted from his humanity,” Pacquiao said. British Prime Minister David Cameron praised Ali on Twitter as “a champion of civil rights, and a role model for so many people,” while India’s Narendra Modi said he was a “source of inspiration who demonstrated the power of human spirit & determination.” “2 Much Greatness!” pop diva Madonna tweeted, along with a photo of Ali and late music legend Prince. http://www.punchng.com/obama-leads-tributes-muhammad-ali-greatest/

FEMI MAKINDE A former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, has filed a lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission asking for damages of N10bn for alleged defamation by declaring him wanted. Omisore, who instituted the case before a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja is also seeking an order restraining the EFCC from further publishing any libelous publication against him. According to a statement of claim made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Saturday by an ally of Omisore, Mr. Diran Odeyemi, who is also the spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State, the plaintiff joined the spokesperson for the EFCC, Wilson Uwajaren as the second defendant. He claimed that the defendants damaged his good reputation by allegedly concocting falsehood against him and portraying him as somebody who could not be trusted in an advertorial published in The Nation newspaper of May 18, 2016. The anti-corruption agency had declared Omisore wanted for his refusal to honour its invitation in a case of receiving and misappropriation of over N700m between June–November 2014 from the office of the National Security Adviser. The plaintiff said a court had restrained the EFCC from arresting him, but despite this order coupled with the fact that the agency had issues with him in the case, they declared him wanted and portrayed him as a fugitive. He stated that the advertorial that newspapers published portrayed him as a dishonest person, who was seeking to evade the law. The statement of claim read in part, “Plaintiff avers that the content of the publication in Page 37 of the Nation Newspaper of 25th May, 2016 is completely false, misleading and defamatory of the Plaintiff. “The Plaintiff states that by the publication, the Defendants have damaged his character, integrity and person by alluding as follows: “That the Plaintiff is a fugitive of dishonourable character seeking to elude the law. “That the Plaintiff is a fraudster who has deliberately refused to honour an invitation by the 1st Defendant in relation to criminal allegations of fraud. “That the Plaintiff lacks financial credibility and has been involved in criminal misappropriation. “That the Plaintiff’s hard-earned reputation is questionable. “That the Plaintiff is a person to be avoided and shunned by the Society being a fugitive and a man of questionable character.” He explained that sometime in 2014, Fimex Gilt Ltd. presented some proposals to the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd) on some security services it could render towards combating the scourge of terrorism and influx of terrorists into the country. The plaintiff stated that Dasuki entered into a contract with the company on border protection and intelligence services and the company was directed to execute the project and payment would be made. The document read, “Prior to the payment made by the former National Security Adviser on the contract, he (the Plaintiff)was approached and he had loaned Fimex Gilt Ltd some of the funds required by Fimex Gilt Ltd to perform the contract. “Upon receipt of the payment by Fimex Gilt Ltd from the former National Security Adviser for the execution of the contract, the Managing Director of Fimex Gilt Ltd known as Adetona David Famadewa who is well known to the Plaintiff on behalf of Fimex Gilt Ltd repaid the fund loaned to Fimex Gilt Ltd to the Plaintiff. “The Plaintiff had no further interests, affiliations or dealings with Fimex Gilt Ltd and was not in any way involved in the performance of the contract between the former National Security Adviser and Fimex Gilt Ltd.” He stated further that despite that the defendants were aware that be had nothing to do with the company they had continued to harass and intimidate him, asking him to refund all monies by the former National Security Adviser in relation to the contract. The Peoples Democratic Party, through its Twitter page, has alleged that a cabal around the president is “trying to plunge Nigeria into serious crisis.” The party claims that Mamman Daura, a nephew of President Buhari, is the head of the alleged cabal. After the then General Muhammadu Buhari took over power from the democratically elected government of Shehu Shagari in 1983, Daura was at some point, appointed the head of African International Bank and chairman of the board of Nigerian Television Authority. Daura, a trained journalist and an industrialist, is said to be the President’s unofficial adviser. The opposition party further inferred that the Daura-led cabal “have turned the president into a prisoner” and have convinced him “not to come clean and tell Nigerians that he is sick.” There is a cabal around the president who are trying to plunge Nigeria into serious crisis.
