“Bring Back Jonathan”— Northern Governor, Stakeholders Push for Jonathan’s Candidacy Influential northern leaders have initiated efforts to convince former President Goodluck Jonathan to enter the 2027 presidential race, presenting a significant challenge to Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid as dissatisfaction with his leadership continues to grow. According to sources, a governor from the North East and a retired general from the North West are leading this campaign. Their argument hinges on the 1999 Constitution, which permits a maximum of two four-year terms for presidents, making Jonathan an appealing candidate since he is eligible for only one more term, having previously served as president. In August, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed publicly declared his support for Jonathan, even stating that he would abandon his own presidential ambitions and fully back Jonathan “with his blood” if he chooses to run. He had said, “With regard to your call for me to present myself, I am still contemplating my chances as the leader of the opposition. “I know there are good leaders within the PDP, especially my boss Goodluck Jonathan. “I have always said that as long as Jonathan is around, I will not present myself for leadership of this country unless he decides not to run. If we can persuade him to come forward, I will support him with my blood. Out of modesty, he is still not ready. I hope you will meet him and encourage him to run. “He will do a better job because he has the experience. We know the prices of things; we know the level of inflation. “During Jonathan’s regime, he was inclusive, addressing issues like the Almajiri system and creating initiatives for unemployed youths. “His leadership recruitment was exemplary. We need leaders like him—young people with energy, foresight, and drive,” he said. 21 years after, Lagos Assembly to scrap 37 LCDAs created by Tinubu in major overhaul The Lagos State House of Assembly is preparing to replace the existing 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) with newly designated Administrative Areas. The 37 LCDAs were created by President Bola Tinubu in 2003 when he was governor of Lagos State. This initiative was revealed during a public hearing for the proposed “Bill for a Law to Provide for the Local Government System, Establishment and Administration, and to Consolidate All Laws on Local Government Administration.” The bill, which outlines the structure of local governance, states that Lagos will operate through democratically elected Local Governments. According to the bill, Lagos will recognize 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) as outlined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The move coincides with the recent Supreme Court ruling granting financial autonomy to the 774 local governments across Nigeria, which requires that only democratically elected local government bodies can access federal funds. The bill further mandates the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to conduct elections for the 20 constitutionally recognized LGAs. Additionally, each LGA will have designated Area Administrative Offices to enhance local governance efficiency. The bill also proposes the creation of 37 Area Administrative Councils, which will serve under the 20 LGAs. These Administrative Councils, to be headed by Area Administrative Secretaries appointed by the Governor, will be funded by the respective LGAs they serve under. The Councils will manage local matters and retain rights, obligations, and liabilities from their previous status as LCDAs. Furthermore, the proposed law allows LGAs to delegate functions to their respective Administrative Councils. It also grants the Governor the power to suspend any chairman, vice chairman, or political appointee. Nigeria is seeing positive results from fiscal reforms — World Bank The World Bank has said that Nigeria is seeing positive results from the economic reforms by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. World Bank’s lead economist, Alex Sienaert, said this during a presentation in Abuja on Thursday, October 17, 2024. Sienaert said Nigeria’s fiscal deficit has reduced from 6.2 percent in the first half of last year to 4.4 percent in the first half of this year. He said the reforms have led to robust growth in service sectors, stability in the oil sector, and improvements in the foreign exchange market. According to him, “We are seeing a fiscal consolidation underway with the fiscal deficit shrinking from 6.2% of GDP in the first half of last year to 4.4% in the first half of this year and that’s driven by a combination of expenditure being roughly constant in real terms, and revenues which are surging. This surge in revenues is largely due to the removal of the implicit FX subsidy that was happening before, which was even larger than the petrol subsidy, which we talk a lot about.” Continue reading on... https://featuredgist.com/nigeria-is-seeing-positive-results-from-fiscal-reforms-world-bank/ |
NNPC has again failed to begin fuel production at the Port Harcourt refinery after the seven postponement This is despite the refinery failing to commence operations after about six postponements as of August 2024. Many promises made to Nigerians by the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources and NNPC about the refinery have continued to hit brick walls. After the failure of the early August promise, the Chief Financial Officer of the NNPC, Umar Ajiya, said the Port Harcourt refinery will commence operations in September 2024. Speaking to journalists in August, Ajiya had said petroleum products would be ready for testing before being supplied to the domestic market in September. As September ended yesterday, the NNPC did not give an update about the refinery. Our correspondent contacted the NNPC last week for an update about the refinery, but there was no response. The Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the oil firm, Olufemi Soneye, did not reply to enquiries sent to him on September 22 and 30, 2024. However, Maire Tecnimont SpA, the contractor overseeing the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt refinery, said it would provide details on the project’s completion by or before October 2. The contractor conveyed this through a law firm, Olajide Oyewole LLP, in response to a letter from a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, who had inquired about the completion timeline for the refinery’s rehabilitation. In reply to Falana’s request, the law firm stated that its client received his letters dated September 17 and 24 regarding the contract with the NNPC and is considering the inquiries. “Our client is considering your letters, and they intend to get back to you on or before 2 October 2024,” the law firm had said. Since December 2023, NNPC, which is in charge of all the government refineries, has given Nigerians different dates, assuring them that the refinery would begin the sale of refined products soon. In July, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the NNPC, Mele Kyari, stated categorically that Continue reading o https://featuredgist.com/nnpc-has-again-failed-to-begin-fuel-production-at-the-port-harcourt-refinery-after-the-seven-postponement/ |

Nigerian Man Convicted in the U.S. Over $198,000 Fraud Scheme in North Dakota Christopher Agbaje, a Nigerian citizen, has been convicted for his role in a fraudulent scheme involving nearly $200,000 against a law firm in North Dakota, USA. The case, prosecuted by the US Attorney’s Office for the District of North Dakota, revealed that Agbaje and his associates falsely posed as a business owner in a legal dispute with a Bismarck company, leading to the fraudulent activity. The fraud, which occurred between November and December 2020, involved a deceptive Citibank check for $198,850 that was deposited into the law firm’s account. Following the deposit, the firm was directed to transfer $198,336.68 to Agbaje’s associate. To obscure the trail, a fake $180,000 international transfer was initiated. When the scheme was uncovered, Agbaje allegedly advised his partner to continue the deception as law enforcement investigated the matter. Extradited from the UK to North Dakota in February 2024, Agbaje faced multiple charges. While he was acquitted of some, he was found guilty of Money Laundering, Aiding and Abetting Wire Fraud, and Aiding and Abetting Mail Fraud. On September 11, 2024, he was sentenced to 142 months in prison and ordered to pay $188,935.74 in restitution to the law firm. US Attorney Mac Schneider emphasized the importance of this case, stating, “This sentence sends a clear message that international fraudsters will be held accountable, no matter where they are.” FBI Special Agent in Charge, Alvin M. Winston Sr., added, “This case demonstrates the commitment to pursuing justice, regardless of the complexity or global reach of the fraud. 25 years old Tyrese Devon Haspil sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of Gokada boss A 25-year-old American man, Tyrese Devon Haspil, the personal assistant turned convicted killer has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the brutal murder of his former boss, Fahim Saleh, the founder of Nigerian ride-hailing company Gokada. The relationship between Saleh and Haspil started in 2018 when Saleh hired the young coding prodigy as his personal assistant. Haspil was entrusted with managing the finances of Adventure Capital. However, it soon became apparent that Haspil was abusing this trust. Between December 2018 and May 2019, Haspil allegedly embezzled over USD 98 K, a figure later revealed to be just a fraction of the total stolen amount. Emails exchanged between Saleh and Haspil painted a picture of growing suspicion. Saleh confronted Haspil in January 2020 about the missing funds. Haspil admitted to the theft and proposed a repayment plan, which Saleh, in a gesture of leniency, agreed to. Saleh decided against involving the police, trusting Haspil to make amends. Despite this agreement, Haspil’s criminal activities did not cease. He created a fake PayPal account under the pseudonym “Nethertek Switzerland,” continuing to siphon money from Saleh even as he appeared to be repaying him. This ongoing embezzlement highlighted the extent of Haspil’s betrayal. Fearing that his broader scheme, which totalled around USD 400 K, would be uncovered, Haspil allegedly plotted to murder Saleh to prevent him from testifying. Prosecutors described the killing as a “meticulously researched and executed” act. On the morning of July 13, 2020, Haspil entered Saleh’s apartment building in a black suit and mask. He followed Saleh into the elevator, which opened directly into his apartment, incapacitated him with a Taser, and then fatally stabbed him. The following day, Haspil returned to dismember the body, but was interrupted when he stepped out to get batteries for an electric saw he was using for the egregious act, during which Saleh’s cousin Continue reading on..... https://featuredgist.com/25-years-old-tyrese-devon-haspil-sentenced-to-40-years-in-prison-for-the-murder-of-gokada-boss/ |
There is no age limit to writing WAEC and NECO — FG The Federal Government says there are no age restrictions for taking the National Examination Council (NECO) and West African Examination Council (WAEC). Speaking in Abuja on Friday, September 6, the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tanko Sununu, said the government only restricted the age for sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and entry into the university to 18 years beginning from 2025. As regards this matter, we have made ourselves clear in different fora. But the issue kept recurring here and there. Actually, nobody among the two of us, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, nor the Minister of State, stated anything about the age limit for WAEC, NECO or NABTEB. People just pick up some remarks the Minister made, misinterpreted the statements to imply that age restriction has been placed for WAEC and NECO examinations. What we have been mentioning in the past was the entry age for University, candidates sitting for the UTME. We have made this clear several times, and this is in line with the National Policy on Education. The document stated that a child is expected to enter Primary School at six years, and he’s expected to spend six years in that school making it 12 years, three years each in junior and senior secondary schools, making it 18 years. That’s what is contained in the National Policy on Education document. The Policy further stated that a child should learn in the language of the immediate environment or mother tongue up till primary three before English language could be introduced in subsequent years. That has facilitated learning at that level because you can easily communicate,” Sununu said. Continue reading on..... https://featuredgist.com/there-is-no-age-limit-to-writing-waec-and-neco-fg/ |
NLC Demands Immediate Reversal of Petrol Price Hike Amid Fuel Scarcity The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), led by President Joe Ajaero, has demanded an immediate reversal of the recent petrol price hike by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). The NNPCL has reportedly raised the pump price from ₦568 to as high as ₦897 per litre, worsening the plight of Nigerians amid ongoing fuel scarcity. Ajaero has accused the Federal Government of betraying the labour movement and criticized its policies, which he described as traumatic and insincere. He also called for the release of individuals arrested during recent protests, a halt to indiscriminate detentions, a reversal of the 250% electricity tariff hike, and an end to oppressive government policies. Ajaero expressed regret over broken promises regarding electricity tariff hikes and criticized the government’s approach to resolving the fuel subsidy issue, citing its negative impact on citizens and businesses. NNPC And Marketers Are Not Buying Our Products, We Might Be Forced To Export Petrol To Other Countries — Dangote The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has said that its Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, will be exported if the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and other petroleum dealers in the country refuse to patronise it. The Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, stated this on Monday while featuring on Brekete Family live show. Edwin, who confirmed that the refinery has started the production of petrol, said local oil traders have resorted to importing diesel and aviation fuel, blocking local sales of Dangote fuel. “We have been exporting aviation fuel, we have been producing kerosene, we have been producing diesel, but yesterday, we started the production of PMS. So, that was the last stage. The only thing now left out is petrochemicals. “So, the good news for the country is we have started producing PMS from our refinery since yesterday (Sunday),” he confirmed. Asked if the petrol would be sold locally, Edwin replied, “Well, I explained how there has been a kind of a blockade from lifting our products within the country. The traders have been trying to block (it), and so now we have been exporting our petroleum products. PMS, we are ready to pump in as much as possible to the country. “But if the traders or NNPC are not buying the product, obviously, we will end up exporting the PMS as we are doing with the aviation jet and diesel,” he declared. Edwin expressed surprise that the company started facing different challenges it never expected when the refinery was set to commence operations. He recalled that the philosophy initially was to add value to the raw materials available in the country, regretting that Nigeria is still exporting crude and importing refined petroleum products after over three decades. Akwa Ibom!!!! Ayilara, Another Avoidable Death Have you read the story of the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara, who just passed away at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital? If you haven’t, please try to read it and have your own share of the shock. The fact that this has just happened after the pathetic story of what Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu, a veteran journalist and former Commissioner for Information in Ogun State, went through in the hands of the nation’s medical practitioners in Abuja, is a cause for concern. It’s easier to call out the government and our leadership and forget that nation-building is about roles and responsibilities. We glibly talk about the roles of government and our leaders but brush aside our responsibilities as people and citizens. The nation’s medical system is a major culprit in the abdication of responsibilities, flooded by inefficient characters, whose only concern is periodic strike in demand for better pay. Better pay without commensurate service, professionalism, and efficiency. You wonder why your leaders don’t stay back for the simplest of medical needs? Now you know. Former President Muhammadu Buhari, despite the Almighty Aso clinic, went abroad for mere ENT, and the whole nation came down heavily on him. Akpabio traveled abroad over minor accidents despite building an “uncommon hospital” in his state, and we were angry. Doctors who operated on a former vice-president, Yemi Osinbajo, at a Lagos, were mostly practicing abroad and just came in to attend to him. Yet, the irony is that our medical practitioners are being poached daily from other countries, where they deliver their best. If you’ve ever traveled abroad for medical needs, you’d have noticed that a majority of those who would attend to you are Nigerians, especially during the post-ops. So, what is our problem? Are we just wicked and deliberately unpatriotic? What has government and poor pay got to do with doing your job well? Mr. Ayilara, just like Mr. Olaniyonu went into the theatre hale and hearty. But while one moved from there to the morgue, the other visited the gate of heaven and back and was only rescued in Egypt. APC is determined to capture most of the South-East states to end the Igbo Marginalization - Ganduje The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Thursday, said the perceived marginalisation of the Igbo could be blamed on the fact that the five South-East states are governed by different political parties, rather than one. Therefore, he said the ruling APC was determined to capture most of the South-East states, starting with Anambra, which is governed by the All Progressive Grand Alliance. “The North, South-East political zones are all claiming that they have been marginalised. The South-East geopolitical zone is saying the same thing. But what we are telling them is that the marginalisation has been created by them. How can you have five states ruled by four political parties? What will be your political bargain?” Ganduje queried. He said the APC was working very hard to ensure that it spread its tentacles beyond Imo and Ebonyi states, by winning more of the South-East states. “Next year, there will be Anambra, which has been a state governed by APGA for many years, but we have introduced a new scheme. We want to start with Anambra. Already, we have Ebonyi and Imo. Now, we are encroaching into that zone to ensure that we capture most of the states. And if we get what we want, we capture all the states,” Ganduje said. South African billionaire, Johann Rupert, overtakes Aliko Dangote as Africa’s richest person Johann Rupert, South African billionaire and chairman of Richemont, a luxury goods conglomerate, has overtaken Aliko Dangote, chairman of Dangote Industries Limited, as Africa’s richest person. According to the latest data from the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Rupert’s net worth has surged to $14.3 billion, overtaking Dangote, whose fortune has declined to $13.4 billion. The data shows that Rupert’s wealth has increased by $1.87 billion year-to-date, while Dangote’s fortune has declined by $1.69 billion. Nicky Oppenheimer, another South African billionaire, occupied the third place with $11.3 billion net worth, Nassef Sawiris, an Egyptian businessman, followed with $9.37 billion, and Natie Kirsh, a South African investor, completed the top five with $9.14 billion. The downturn in Dangote’s net worth is largely attributed to Nigeria’s challenging macroeconomic environment, where his conglomerate primarily operates. Since President Bola Tinubu assumed office in 2023 and partially removed petrol subsidy while easing currency controls to attract foreign investment, the naira has lost its value. The Dangote Group has faced production delays and other industrial issues at its refinery, compounded by the steep depreciation of the naira. The decline has significantly impacted Dangote, whose wealth is largely tied to assets denominated in naira. Despite the challenges faced, the Dangote Group plans to generate roughly $30 billion in revenue by 2025, focusing on expanding its influence in the foreign exchange market. FG deploys 10,000 agro-rangers to 19 states, FCT to combat insecurity in farms across Nigeria The Federal government through the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has announced the deployment of 10,000 agro rangers across the country, Nairametrics is reporting. This is in a move to curtail insecurity across the food producing belt of the country which has negatively impact food production across the country in recent times. SCREENSHOT The Special Assistant to President Tinubu on New Media, Olusegun Dada disclosed this in a post on his official X handle. According to the statement, the agro-rangers initiative is a partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC) noting that agro rangers will help protect farmers against malicious destruction of farmlands as well as farmer herder conflict. The post reads, “As part of ongoing efforts to enhance food security in the Northern region and other parts of the country, the FG through the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps(NSCDC) has deployed over 10,000 Agro Rangers across 19 states and the FCT.” “The Agro Rangers will, among other things; safeguard farmlands and protect farmers from escalating attacks, mediate conflicts between farmers and herders, and prevent malicious destruction of farmlands. While the food inflation crisis in the country is a function of many factors, insecurity has been a long term challenge and this collaboration between the NSCDC and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is expected to solve a major challenge faced by farmers across the country.” The deployment of agro-rangers stems from earlier plans by the federal government through the National Economic Council (NEC) in February this year Continue reading on... https://featuredgist.com/fg-deploys-10000-agro-rangers-to-19-states-fct-to-combat-insecurity-in-farms-across-nigeria/ |
N573b fund: Presidency replies governors The Presidency cleared the air yesterday on the controversy over the N573 billion received by states. It said the fund is a World Bank loan, which the Federal Government guaranteed, and not a grant. It explained that the issue of whether it was a grant or a loan should not be at the centre of discussion but rather how the money can assist in the country’s development. The clarification was made through a Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi. He said: “I think the issue is not whether it is a loan or grant. “The point, as clearly stated in the President’s broadcast, is that the states got money. “The amount, which is the second tranche under the COVID-19 livelihoods support scheme under the NG-CARES Programme funded by the World Bank, is N570 billion. “The fact is states are getting needed support and funding to improve the lives of the people. “The World Bank facility is guaranteed by the Federal Government because every multilateral loan must have a sovereign guarantee. “This means the loan will be repaid by the Federal Government in case the sub-nationals are unable to. “There should be no hue and cry by any governor really if the objective is to serve the people and make life better for the masses. “The President is elected to make life better for citizens the same way the governors are elected to do the same in their respective states. “President Tinubu will continue to work to expand the economy and enable shared prosperity for all Nigerians. “He considers the governors as partners in progress and the job of nation-building. “What can’t be denied is that the states have more resources to deliver better service to the people, especially in critical areas of education, healthcare, security and physical infrastructure like roads among others.” Ajayi described the issue as more than just semantics, explaining that the payment was the second tranche, with the first paid in October or November last year. N12bn Paris investment: What a shame, Obi fumes over Nigeria’s poor outing at Olympics The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, has called on the federal government to investigate what he termed the ‘rascalities of leaders’ that always rob Nigeria of golden opportunities to make a positive change. Obi was reacting to the poor outing of the Nigerian team in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. He complained about the attitude of Nigerian sporting authorities, noting that their gross misconduct should be checked. According to him: “Now that the Paris Olympics 2024 has officially ended and our dear Team Nigeria, despite the huge financial investment made into the project, is returning without a single medal, let me unreservedly register my displeasure with the performance of our team and their handlers. The rascality and recklessness that has continued to characterise leadership in our nation in nearly every department. The general impression that has come to stick is the one that portrays our country as a joke, even on the international stage. How can one explain that a country like Jamaica spent less than 5% of what we spent on our contingents for the Paris Olympics 2024 and won as many as 6 medals. Yet with our huge financial investments and large contingent, we could not win even a single medal? At least nine African countries won gold but the giant with over 200m people came home without even a bronze! We invested about N12 billion in this year’ s Olympics, which is almost twice the amount budgeted for the entire Ministry of Science and Technology for this year. This is over N136 million (about $85,000) spent on each of the 88 Nigerian contingents to the Olympics, and no single medal was won while Jamaica, a nation which spent far less than we did, a total of about $2300 on each contingent, won 6 medals; 1 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze at the Olympics. We must now interrogate the relationship between this huge investment and our dismal outcome. Sad stories like this are our lot only because we have refused to Continue reading on..... https://featuredgist.com/n12bn-paris-investment-what-a-shame-obi-fumes-over-nigerias-poor-outing-at-olympics/ |
Women who do makeup during their weddings don’t believe God did a good job in creating them — Bishop Adeboye The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has said women who wear makeup, especially during their weddings, do not believe God did a perfect job on them. Speaking at the Redemption City, Mowe, Ogun State, Adeboye said: “When you marry, you cut your coat according to your clothes. Some of you want to be like the people of the world. I can’t even imagine some of the things I see now. It wasn’t so in the beginning. People spend hundreds of thousands of naira on ‘shoot out’ (photo shoot). And then, on the day of the wedding, the girl put on all manner of decorations. Those who do makeup are those who do not believe God did a good job. When God created you, He did a great job, you are wonderful, perfectly made, and you cannot find any other fellow like you. You are special. When you begin to paint, and you think you can improve on what God has already done, you are a fool. You can never improve on what God has done.” Continue reading on... https://featuredgist.com/women-who-do-makeup-during-their-weddings-dont-believe-god-did-a-good-job-in-creating-them-bishop-adeboye/ |

The military will intervene if #EndBadGovernance protest ‘Gets Out Of Hand’ — IGP The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has disclosed that there are plans to involve the Armed Forces if things get out of control during the planned nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests. Egbetokun disclosed this while hosting a Zoom meeting with concerned prominent human rights lawyers Femi Falana (SAN) and Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), Take-It-Back Movement, representatives of the Nigerian Bar Association, and various civil society organisations on Tuesday. The police chief stated that soldiers will be asked to monitor public demonstrations if there are sufficient reasons to believe that what happened during the 2020 #EndSARS protests will reoccur. He said, “For those people who are threatening violence , most of them are faceless. Most of them remain faceless. And for those of them that we have been able to trace, we have picked some of them up; they are already in our detention. We arrested one yesterday who was threatening violence , who was instigating people to go and bomb public places and burn down police stations. We have such in our custody. With respect to the involvement of the military, the military is not going to come out to provide security during this protest. The military will only come out when the situation gets out of hand. What happened during the #EndSARS, the military did not just come out.
