Just In: Planned protest: Stay at home — Lagos Ndigbo tells Igbos
Coalition of Igbo Political and Social-Cultural Groups, Lagos State chapter, on Tuesday, distanced itself from the planned nationwide protests scheduled to commence on August 1, 2024, urging Igbo traders across the state to stay home and not open their businesses on days slated for the protest to avoid being attacked.
Organizers of the protests had slated to hold the protest from August 1-10, 2024 to voice their concern about the current hardships pervading the country.
The coalition made up of 16 different Igbo groups in Lagos, gave this stand at a press conference, which took place at the Airport Hotel, Ikeja, noting that while there is no dispute that there is hardship in the country, quickly affirmed that the current economic downturn was not limited to Nigeria and not caused by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

President of the coalition, Sunday Ossai, said the Igbo in Lagos had always been wrongly accused of organising protests in the state which has always put their lives in danger and, therefore, the reason they had to come out to deny knowing anything about organising the protest. According to him, Ndigbo are not part of it and not part of the planned nationwide protests, urging Ndigbo across the state to be cautious of their movements by staying “home and not go for their businesses on the days of the protests.
“Ndigbo have always been wrongly accused so we have come out to deny accusations against us. We don’t know anything about organising the protests, Ndigbo are not part of it. We are innocent. I appeal to Ndigbo to be cautious of their movements and urge them to stay home and not go for their businesses on the days of the protests,” Ossai said.
The Coordinator of the coalition, Anselm Njoku, in his remark, affirmed that Lagos is a Yoruba land which the Ndigbo who were residents in the state had contributed immensely to its development, vowing that they cannot

Just In: Yoruba people and well-meaning Nigerians should reject this protest. It’s politically motivated. We will firmly resist those who intend to cause violence across Yorubaland — Yoruba Nation Activist, Sunday Igboho, kicks against #EndBadGovernance protest
Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has kicked against the nationwide protests planned for August 1 over the hardship in the country.
Igboho in a statement issued late last night, said: “I, Chief Sunday Igboho, am issuing this press release in response to the planned protests by some unknown and faceless individuals, who are working to disintegrate the country.
‘’Since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s assumed office on May 29, 2023, he has implemented revolutionary policies, which his predecessors lacked the political will to pursue.
These bold steps have, unsurprisingly, unsettled those who believe it is their birth right to rule Nigeria. And in response, there have been attempts to undermine his administration, particularly on social media, with the aim of creating discord between the government and the people.
Recently, we have become aware of notices from unknown individuals threatening 10 days of rage’, beginning August 1, 2024, under the slogan ‘Tinubu Must Go!’ While the right to peaceful protest is enshrined in our constitution, it does not extend to calls for an unconstitutional regime change.
It is worth noting that during President Buhari’s eight-year tenure, there were no such protests for regime change from the Southwest, even when our people faced oppression and atrocities by Fulani terrorists.
Our protests were focused on protecting our communities, not on destabilizing the country. The Yoruba Nation Movement and I firmly declare that we will not participate in any protest aimed at using the Southwest as a battleground for political upheaval. We stand resolute in our belief that the Yoruba nation will not be a launchpad for disintegrating Nigeria. We recognize that economic hardship is a global

PoliticsElection Losers Are Sponsoring Nationwide Protest — Senator Godswill Akpabio by Featuredgist(op): 7:41am On Jul 30, 2024
Election losers are sponsoring nationwide protest — Senator Godswill Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has accused the candidates who lost out in the 2023 presidential election of sponsoring the planned nationwide protest.
Mr Akpabio spoke on Monday at the State House, Abuja, after he witnessed President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the new minimum wage bill into law.
Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party, Omoyele Sowore of African Action Congress (AAC) and others ran against President Tinubu in the election.
Some individuals and organisations in the country have planned a nationwide protest over the hardship occasioned by the economic policies of the Tinubu administration. The protest will be held between August 1 and August 10. The senate president, however, said those who lost the election thought they could use the protest to claim the mandate through the back door.

People who probably do not have their fortunes in the 2023 election are thinking they can come through the back door, and that will amount to anarchy,” Mr Akpabio said. He cautioned the intended protesters to ignore damaging properties. “Any destruction of any property will cost Nigeria money. We don’t have the money. Instead, let’s put the money into developing you and developing your environs instead of going to rebuild”.
Mr Akpabio also raised the alarm that some people are planning to use the protest to loot properties and commit other atrocities. So I want to use this opportunity to call on those who are attempting to foment trouble; that you have a right to protest. It is your fundamental right. It is there in the constitution. But you don’t have a right to destabilise the country. The right to protest should not be turned into the right to unleash v+olence. It’s very clear that people who are behind this are very amorphous, very faceless. So what it means is that

Divert public funds and go to jail — AGF warns Local Government chairmen
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has warned local government council chairmen and councillors against diverting funds meant for their jurisdictions.
Speaking at an event in Abuja on Thursday, July 25, Fagbemi warned that anyone found wanting will be jailed.
Recall that the Supreme Court on Thursday morning, July 11, granted financial autonomy to the 774 local governments across the country.

The apex court in its pronouncement in a lawsuit filed by the Federal Government against the 36 state governments ordered the Federal Government to henceforth, pay allocation meant for the 774 local government directly to their respective accounts.
Fagbemi, who observed that local government chairmen may want to divert the funds amid state pressure, said: “Well, we have a situation on our hands, I know that it is still there; the conduct of elections is to be undertaken by the states.
But the distinction is this: don’t forget, the governors have immunity, the local government council chairmen or councillors, they have no immunity, so they have to choose between dealing with the funds of the local government as they like and risking going to jail. The choice is theirs (LG chairmen).
If they want to tamper with these funds and end up in jail, it is their choice. Or if they want to write their names in letters of gold, activities like construction or upgrading of roads must return to the local government. They don’t all have to come to Abuja.
If they stay at the local government, we will be able to reduce the level of insecurity that we have in Nigeria today. What obtains offshore is that the security agents are able to perform optimally because of information that comes to them from members of the

DSS identifies sponsors of Aug. 1 protest, warns against action

The Department of State Services on Thursday warned against the planned nationwide protest against hardship in the country.

The agency said on Thursday that it had already identified the sponsors of the planned protest and warned them not to proceed with it as it is not in Nigeria’s interest.

The warning is contained in a press statement signed by the Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, Dr. Peter Afunanya, and made available to Vanguard.

The security outfit warned that it had intelligence that the planned protest would be hijacked by hoodlums to cause chaos and extreme violence in the country.

The statement alleged that the goal of the planners is to cause regime change, especially at the centre.

Part of the statement reads: “The DSS has followed the discourse on planned protests in parts of the country in the coming weeks by persons and groups yet to identify themselves in the public as leaders of the plot. “While peaceful protest is a democratic right of citizens, the Service has confirmed a sinister plan by some elements to infiltrate the protest and use it to cause chaos and extreme violence in the land. It has also identified the reason behind the protest to be political.

“The plotters desire to use the intended violent outcome to smear the federal and sub-national governments; make them unpopular and pit them against the masses. The long term objective is to achieve a regime change especially at the Centre.

“The Service has also identified, among others, the funding lines, sponsors and collaborators of the plot. “However, it does not think that aggression should be the first line action in the instance, in handling the emerging scenario. It has instead, variously applied non kinetic and conflict resolution strategies, including moral suasion, stakeholder engagement and other multi-track diplomatic shuttles, to dissuade the planners from actualising their undesirable objective.

“Based on the foregoing, the Service wishes to warn all the protest groups to eschew any form of proposed rage, anarchy and spoliation.

Don’t Force Lagos Govt to Regret Accommodating Non-Lagosians — Monarch Threatens Nigerian Protesters
Oba Lukman Adebambo, the Gbadewolu of Araromi in Lagos, has issued a warning against protests in the state, emphasizing the potential damage to infrastructure.
The monarch suggested that the upcoming protests might be organized by non-indigenes and reminded residents of Lagos’ accommodating nature.

Oba Adebambo stated, “Whenever there is a protest, infrastructure in Lagos State bears the brunt. People should remember that Lagos State accommodates all and indigenes should not be made to regret their accommodative gesture.
“We will, henceforth, not tolerate destruction of infrastructure under the guise of protest.”
Oba Adebambo urged the agitators to seek peaceful and constructive ways to express their grievances.
“It is true that there is hardship in the country, but it is not limited to Nigeria, other countries are also facing similar experiences,” he told The Nation.
He urged agitators to seek peaceful and constructive ways to express their grievances, acknowledging the widespread hardship but cautioning that protests could escalate into conflicts.
He added, “Protest is not going to solve the crisis at hand. People should remember what happened during the last #EndSARS protest, a lot of things were destroyed, and lots of companies and government properties were destroyed.
“These are also part of what is affecting us today; the destroyed properties were built with public funds, and the money that were supposed to be used for other projects are being used to refurbish those properties.”
The monarch assured that the administration of Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu is aware of the current economic

Don’t Protest, Give Me More Time – Tinubu Begs Nigerians
The Nigerian government has received notice of a nationwide protest planned by various groups of citizens to take place from August 1 to 10, aimed at protesting the rising cost of living and economic hardship in the country. In response, President Bola Tinubu has appealed to the youths to shelve the plan and await the government’s response to their grievances.

According to sources, the President met with Information Minister Mohammed Idris on Tuesday, July 23, where he expressed his disapproval of the planned protest. Tinubu is said to have emphasized the need for patience and faith in his administration’s ability to transform Nigeria.
The President is reportedly urging the protesters to give him more time to address their concerns, rather than resorting to street protests. The government has also beefed up security measures in anticipation of the planned demonstration.
The planned protest has sparked concerns among authorities, who are working to ensure public safety and order. While the organizers of the protest have not publicly responded to the President’s appeal, it remains unclear whether they will heed his call or proceed with their planned action.
In the meantime, citizens are bracing themselves for potential disruptions and uncertainty as the situation continues to unfold.
The government’s response is being closely watched, as many Nigerians wait with bated breath for a resolution to the ongoing

Tinubu gave the directive at the 142nd National Economic Council (NEC) meeting attended by state governors and some deputies at the State House, Abuja on Thursday.
The N50,000 monthly grant is set aside for 3.7 million families across the 36 states and the FCT, N10bn allocation each for CNG buses in the 36 states and the FCT, while N155bn earmarked for assorted foods is estimated to cost over N1tn.

The average price of petrol in Nigeria is approximately N701 per liter, significantly lower than the average rate of N1,787 per liter in neighboring countries. This difference has led to increased incidents of petrol smuggling out of Nigeria in recent weeks.

At a press briefing in Yola, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, highlighted the necessity of collaborating with the Office of the National Security Adviser to address the challenge.
“Today, we are here to update members of the public on the strategic efforts of the Nigeria Customs Service in addressing the critical issue of fuel smuggling through the recently launched Operation Whirlwind, under the auspices of the Office of the National Security Adviser.
“About a year ago, the Federal Government made the bold strategic decision to remove the fuel subsidy. This crucial step was aimed at freeing up substantial funds that could be redirected to other productive sectors of the economy, reducing pressure on our foreign exchange reserves, and diversifying economic growth.
“The immediate impact was an upward adjustment in fuel prices to reflect current realities. Despite the inflationary pressures and financial strain on households, particularly those with lower incomes, comparative studies still show that fuel prices in Nigeria remain the cheapest compared to other countries in the West and Central African region,”
“While PMS is sold at an average of N701.99 in Nigeria, it is sold at an average of N1,672.05 in the Republic of Benin and N2,061.55 in Cameroon. In other countries around the region, the price of PMS ranges from N1,427.68 in Liberia to N2,128.20 in Mali, averaging

Christianity EtcRCCG City Of David Allegedly In N320 Million Debt As Pastor Kpandel Takes Over F by Featuredgist(op): 6:07pm On Jun 10, 2024
RCCG City of David allegedly in N320 million debt as Pastor Kpandel takes over from Pastor ID Iluyomade

Pastor Charles Kpandei, who replaced a former Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God’s City of David parish in Lagos State, Idowu Iluyomade, resumed at the parish on Sunday.

According to Church Times, on resumption, Kpandei first introduced himself to the church and then preached on the subject of heaven.
Kpandei urged members to welcome one another to church during the second service of the City of David.
He said, “Are you really happy to be in church today? For those of you who are just coming for the second service, it is important to tell you that I am called Pastor Charles Kpandei.
You need that name because you are going to tell somebody that on behalf of Pastor Charles Kpandei, you are welcome to church today.”
Before going to the main message, he prayed that God would remember the City of David for good, quoting Nehemiah 13v14.
According to the report, the parish is being audited by a notable audit firm amid an alleged N320 million debt, following the suspension of Iluyomade on June 1, 2024.
Iluyomade was suspended for three months by the church’s Governing Council after a panel was constituted to investigate the allegations against him and the parish.
He was asked to resume at the church’s headquarters after the suspension.
The embattled pastor, fondly called PID, received a letter of his suspension two weeks ago and was immediately replaced by Kpandei of the church’s Resurrection Parish Region 11.
Iluyomade has been in the eyes of the storm following the elaborate 60th birthday of his wife, Siju, shortly after the death of the then Chief Executive Officer of Access Bank, Herbert Wigwe, who was a prominent member of his church.
The pastor was suspended on two issues bordering on the audit of the church and the alleged resistance by the pastor to be transferred from the parish.
However, a source in the church told

Just In: Idowu Iluyomade resigns pastoral appointment with RCCG
Pastor Idowu Iluyomade, a former senior pastor the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, City of David Parish, Region 20, has resigned his appointment with the church.
Iluyomade was until last week, the pastor of the hugely successful branch until he got transferred to the Throne of Grace branch, Ebute Metta, Lagos, which serves as the headquarter of the mission, by the church leadership.
He was expected to take charge at his new station where he will serve as the Pastor-in-Charge of elders.
The former Pastor in-charge of RCCG Resurrection Parish of Region 11, Pastor Charles Kpandei has since been seconded to the City of David Parish to take over from Iluyomade.
Ironically, Kpandei preached at the combined Service of Songs held on March 7, 2024 at the RCCG Resurrection Parish, Lekki, Lagos State for the late Wigwes.
The transfer however didn’t go down well with Iluyomade and his wife, Siju, both of who were conspicuously absent during church service this past Sunday when his transfer was announced, hence his decision to pull out of the RCCG family.
Reliable sources reveal that he turned in his resignation on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.
Iluyomade’s transfer may not be unconnected to obscene and lavish 60th birthday of his wife threw on February 18, 2024.
The birthday party which had all the trappings of luxury held at the Eko Hotels & Suites in Lagos with highlife, sensual singer, Chinedu Okoli aka Flavour leading the pack of singers who serenaded guests at the party which included Tony Elumelu, the chairman of United Bank for Africa, UBA; Nneka Onyeali Ikpe, the managing director of Fidelity Bank; Oba Ghandi Olaoye, the Soun of Ogbomoso who was a former RCCG pastor, among several other prominent guests.
A cross section of Nigerians thought it was insensitive for the Iluyomades to throw such a party particularly when it was just too soon after Herbert Wigwe, founding CEO of Access Holdings Plc, his wife, Chizoba and son died in a helicopter crash in the US on February 9.
Wigwe was a prominent member of the church

Revocation of Heritage Bank’s Licence Will Hurt Confidence in Banking System - Peter Obi
Former Anambra Governor and the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last general election, Peter Obi, yesterday, said that the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) revocation of Heritage Bank’s operating licence, has a far-reaching impact on the bank’s depositors given the current hardship in the country.
Obi, who stated this via his official X handle, urged the government to immediately pay depositors of the bank to avoid unnecessary hardship.
He called on both the CBN and the NDIC to ensure that all customers of the bank are paid their money.
According to the former governor of Anambra State, “Given the harsh economic realities in the country now, I will urge the federal government via NDIC to ensure immediate payment of all depositors in Heritage Bank in full to help alleviate the prevailing hardship the people are going through in the country.
“Many individual savers and SMEs are already groaning under severe negative effects of the economy and already living in abject poverty. These depositors depend on the savings they have in the now-liquidated bank to survive.
“Any attempt to deny or delay payment to these depositors would worsen their economic woes and could lead to a crisis of confidence in the banking system.
“Anything short of immediate and full payment can create panic in the banking sector which our already fragile economy cannot afford.
“On no account should the actions of the government through the CBN destabilize the financial system or

If things are hard for you, call on God — Pastor Adeboye tells Nigerians
Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, has urged Nigerians experiencing hard times to call on God for help.
Adeboye spoke at RCCG headquarters in Ebute-Metta on Sunday during the June thanksgiving service with the theme, ‘Lifter Up of My Head’. According to Adeboye: “If you need provision, if things are hard and I know things are hard for quite a few of us, call on the one whose name is Jehovah El-Shaddai, the God who is more than enough. Call on Him – the one who is more than enough and He will meet your needs…He has many ways, depending on what is your need.
When all ways are blocked, call on Him who is called the way when you don’t even know what’s going on.”
The organized labour had embarked on the strike to push for an improvement in the minimum wage of workers. While the organized labour is proposing N494,000 as new minimum wage, the Nigerian government is insisting on paying N60,000.
In a last minute move to stop the strike, leaders of the National Assembly and organized labour met yesterday.
The meeting, however, ended in a deadlock as the

Sit-at-home agitations treasonable, says President Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu talked tough yesterday on the sit-at-home action in the South East, labeling it treasonable.
He warned that decisive sanctions now await violent non-state actors like the gunmen who killed five soldiers at the Obikabia Junction checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State last Thursday.
The soldiers were attacked by people the Defence Headquarters said were members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) during the sit-at-home called by IPOB to mark this year’s Biafra Day.
President Tinubu directed security agencies to fish out the masterminds and executors of the killings as well as those calling for sit-at-home.
The President said the exercise of restraint by security forces in dealing with violent attacks on its personnel should not be mistaken for weakness, pointing out that the federal government would not hesitate to take appropriate action when the lives of

Full List of 58 Ex-Governors That Embezzled N2.187 Trillion
According to the EFCC’s allegations, a significant number of former governors, totaling at least 58, have alleged to been involved in the misappropriation, embezzlement, or laundering of approximately N2.187 trillion over a span of 25 years.
This amount does not include properties seized worldwide or those currently being investigated, which amount to billions of Naira.
The amount of N2.2 trillion that was looted is similar to the combined budgets of Lagos State and the South-East states for 2024, totaling N2.25 trillion and N2.29 trillion respectively. This figure exceeds the budgets of the North-Central states and North-East states for 2024, which are N1.89 trillion and N1.60 trillion, by several billion.
The EFCC is currently investigating, probing, and prosecuting 58 ex-governors from various regions of the country. Since the restoration of civilian government on May 29, 1999, there have been at least 170 governors serving in the 36 states of Nigeria.
The 58 ex-governors who are currently or have previously faced investigations by EFCC, with alleged amounts in question, consist of:
late Abubakar Audu (N10.966 bn),
TA Orji and sons (N551 bn)
Yahaya Bello (N80.2 bn)
Chimaroke Nnamani (N5. 3 bn)
