Why proposed N200,000 minimum wage is no longer realistic — NLC The Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, has said the N200,000 minimum wage it earlier proposed to the Federal Government is no longer realistic considering Nigeria’s current economic situation. NLC Vice President, Tommy Etim, spoke while reacting to Tuesday’s inauguration of the Minimum Wage Committee by Vice President Kashim Shettima. Shettima inaugurated the committee at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. However, Etim said: “You are aware that when we opted for the N200,000, the socio-economic challenges were not as biting as they are now. And when you now look at the exchange rate, it was not what it is now. The naira rate has not been devalued as it is now. So, N200,000 is no longer tenable. We are not going there with a fixed amount, but definitely not N200,000. By the time we get there, we will decide based on the socio-economic situation. That’s what we are going to base our national minimum wage discussion and negotiation on.” Continue reading on..... https://featuredgist.com/why-proposed-n200000-minimum-wage-is-no-longer-realistic-nlc/ |
“Floating the Naira without adequate supply is like building a non-gated house in a crime-infested community- Peter Obi You can’t float your currency without a defense mechanism and adequate supply. “We’d have revalued the currency to about N600 and managed the supply from there on. Not even in the developed world has anyone left their currency to pure market forces. “We would also have dealt decisively with the criminality side of things. The round-tripping of dollars and the illegitimate use of the USD in domestic transactions. We have to make Naira the preferred currency for transactions. Of course, if you earn your USD legitimately, you can use it as you like, but it’s important that every decision is adequately thought through and crime is reduced.” — PETER OBI Naira has to be the preferred currency for transactions… move the country from CONSUMPTION to PRODUCTION Continue reading on..... https://featuredgist.com/floating-the-naira-without-adequate-supply-is-like-building-a-non-gated-house-in-a-crime-infested-community-peter-obi/ |

Insecurity: “We’ve Arrested Those Giving Information To Kidnappers In Abuja” – Wike The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that some informants working for kidnappers in Abuja have been arrested. Wike made this known during a town hall meeting with stakeholders and residents in Gwagwalada Area Council of the FCT on Friday. The former Rivers state governor declared that the end has come for kidnappers, bandits and their informants in the FCT. He said: “The President has asked me to assure you that he will not abandon you. So, all these criminals, be ready. “Your time is up. If I say I will do something, I will do it. And now that I am here today, if you know you are an informant or even one of the criminals, the end has come for you. Security agencies and I will follow up so you won’t enter Gwagwalada again. “Some of the people giving them information, we have arrested them. If they haven’t arrested you, it doesn’t mean we won’t arrest you tomorrow or even before we leave this place.” “The CP should work out how we can provide two more police divisions in Gwagwalada. We must do this immediately. It is a security matter and must not be bogged down by bureaucratic bottlenecks. “The president has given me power to buy more vehicles. Muslim-Muslim Ticket Hasn’t Brought Positive Change, Says Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria We campaigned and supported this government until it came to power, but we are suffering.” The Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN) on Tuesday provoked a fresh controversy on the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 election, which, it said, has fallen short of expectations. According to the organization, the same faith ticket adopted by President Bola Tinubu to emerge victorious in the last general election has not brought any positive changes to the lives of Nigerians. The President of SCSN, Sheikh AbdurRasheed Hadiyyatullah, gave the verdict in an interview with journalists during a National Conference which held Abuja with the theme, “Matters Arising From 2023 Election and Associated Socio-Economic Challenges.” He said despite the enormous support received by the President during the election, Nigerians have not enjoyed dividends of democracy since he came to power. Hadiyyatullah said the reason many Nigerians supported the same faith ticket was to see how it could engender development to the country, adding however that nothing has been achieved for the past seven months. He said, “The Nigeria of today is too bad. What we are buying at N200 before is N2000 now. We have scarcity of Naira and unemployment is escalating. Nigerians are not enjoying the new government at all. I don’t want to go personal but the Sharia Council helped the Muslim-Muslim ticket to be successful. We campaigned and supported this government until it came to power, but we are suffering. “Some of the Ministers are siphoning and looting https://featuredgist.com/muslim-muslim-ticket-hasnt-brought-positive-change-says-supreme-council-for-sharia-in-nigeria/ |
Jersey to return $8.9 million looted under former President Jonathan to Nigeria Jersey’s Royal Court has ruled in favour of returning stolen assets valued at £6.9 million ($8.9 million) to Nigeria. The decision comes after Jersey’s Attorney General issued a forfeiture notice in November, asserting that the funds, deposited in a Jersey bank account, were likely misappropriated by Nigerian government officials in 2014. The illicit transfer of funds was reportedly disguised as government-sanctioned contracts for arms purchases during Boko Haram incursions in Nigeria between 2009 and 2015. Leadership newspaper that former President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was in power between 2010 and 2015. It will also be recalled that a lot of controversy had surrounded the purchase of weapons in the fight against insurgency with the then National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki, being accused of diverting funds meant for security equipment. Also in late 2014, a private jet belonging to the-then President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, was arrested in South Africa with $10m cash, which was allegedly meant for the purchase of military weapons. The Jersey court found that most of the funds, initially intended for legitimate arms deals, had been diverted through foreign bank accounts and shell companies linked to the former ruling party in Nigeria. Jersey’s Attorney General, Mark Temple KC, noted the collaboration between Jersey and the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the recovery process. Temple stressed the effectiveness of the 2018 Forfeiture Law in combating corruption and restoring funds to victims of crime. Plans are underway to negotiate an asset return agreement with the Nigerian government. He said: “This case again demonstrates the effectiveness of the 2018 Forfeiture Law in recovering the Continue reading on https://featuredgist.com/jersey-to-return-8-9-million-looted-under-former-president-jonathan-to-nigeria/ |

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa suspends caretaker chairmen in Ondo state of the 18 local government areas and 33 Local Council Development Areas (LCDA). The caretaker chairmen are to remain suspended until the case is determined by the court. An Akure High Court presided over by Justice Yemi Fasanmi had granted an interim injunction filed by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which sought to restrain late governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu from inaugurating any person or persons not democratically elected as member(s) of caretaker committees to administer the affairs of the local councils and the LCDA pending the determination of the interlocutory Injunction in this suit. Justice Fasanmi later barred the caretaker chairmen from operating after they resumed office on the excuse that they had been sworn in before the order was granted. Aiyedatiwa’s suspension of the caretaker chairman was contained in a letter by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and signed by Alonge Adewale. The letter read: “It has come to the notice of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs that despite the suspension of all recently appointed Caretaker Committee members for Local Government (LGAS) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the State by a Court of competent jurisdiction, some individuals in these former positions are still parading themselves in that posts. “Consequently, I have been directed to request the Heads of Local Government Administration (HOLGAs) in all the LGAs/LCDAs to immediately assume responsibility as head of their respective Local Government Areas/ LCDAs in acting capacity pending the resolution of all Legal matters relating to this subject.” Continue reading on https://featuredgist.com/governor-lucky-aiyedatiwa-suspends-caretaker-chairmen-in-ondo-state/ |

Nigeria Is Now An IDM Camp, PDP Slams President Tinubu for Withholding Workers’ December Salary The opposition party which ruled Nigeria for 16 years from 1999 to May 2015, slammed the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Tinubu administration for failure to pay the December salary of workers. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the President Bola Tinubu-led administration of turning Nigerians to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) following the exacerbating economic crunch ravaging the country. The opposition party which ruled Nigeria for 16 years from 1999 to May 2015, slammed the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Tinubu administration for failure to pay the December salary of workers. A statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the failure to pay workers salary during the Christmas and New Year festivities confirmed that the administration was out to frustrate and inflict more pains on Nigerians despite the current economic hardship ravaging the country. “The party describes the failure to discharge such sensitive obligation to workers especially at this yuletide period as unacceptable and further shows the level of insensitivity of the Tinubu-led APC administration towards the welfare of Nigerians,” the statement added. “By this action, the Tinubu administration has practically turned our nation into a huge Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp with millions of Nigerians becoming beggars and observing the period in hunger, anguish and misery. “It is obvious that the non-payment of the December salary critically needed by the workers including our gallant security operatives at this period is consistent with the atrocious character of APC administration to weaponize poverty and further suppress Nigerians to surrender to totalitarianism.” PDP questioned whether the deliberate action of the government of president Tinubu was not provocative considering that the president has been “busy partying and luxuriating” with APC leaders, while workers who are putting in their time and energy in the service of the nation are left with nothing to feed and celebrate with their families and loved ones. “Sadly, President Tinubu would rather approve the frittering of our nation’s scarce resources to sponsor cronies, political minions, hangers-on and Continue reading on https://featuredgist.com/nigeria-is-now-an-idm-camp-pdp-slams-president-tinubu-for-withholding-workers-december-salary/ |

Senators Put Under Pressure By Tinubu Presidency To Pass 2024 Budget Without Scrutiny –Source The Senator, who spoke on condition of anonymity, asked how the senators were expected to pass a national budget without having the necessary details. Despite reports indicating that the National Assembly would pass the 2024 Appropriation Bill of N27.5tn on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, senators are yet to get a copy of the budget for scrutiny, SaharaReporters has reliably gathered. It was earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu last Wednesday presented to a joint session of the National Assembly the 2024 Budget, which he christened, ‘Budget of Renewed Hope’. However, last Friday both the Senate and the House of Representatives passed the budget for a second reading. Speaking during the plenary session, the Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, hinted that the budget might be passed by the lawmakers on December 19 before embarking on their Christmas and New Year break. Despite senators applauding President Bola Tinubu for his good intentions for the country, however, many of them decried the failure of the executive to provide the details of the budget. The budget was passed for a second reading and referred to the Committee on Appropriations after being put to a voice vote by Barau, who presided over the session. “The budget is hereby referred to the Committee on Appropriations and the committee is mandated to submit the report to this chamber on December 19,” Barau stated. Nigerian Delegates Sponsored By Tinubu Are In Dubai Moving Around, Taking Selfies, Snap-Chatting – Sowore Sowore describes the trip as a jamboree and a waste of money adding that many of those who attended the event were moving around aimlessly taking selfies and chatting and posting pictures on instagram. The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the last general elections, Omoyele Sowore, has slammed the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government for attending the climate summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates with 1411 delegates. He stated this on Tuesday in Abuja while addressing journalists at the Federal High Court, Abuja, where he was standing trial for trumped-up treason charges. Sowore described the reckless spending of taxpayers’ money by the Tinubu-led government as ridiculous, unacceptable and uncalled for. He accused the government of being insensitive to the plight of Nigerians by leading such huge number of delegates to Dubai when many people at home could not afford to feed or pay school fees for their children. Sowore said, “There is no difference between Buhari and Tinubu’s regimes; they are the same characters and they are both sick, incompetent and corrupt. As we are speaking they are in Dubai wasting Nigeria’s money. They were accused of taking over 1,400 people to Dubai for a jamboree including the Inspector-General of Police leaving Nigeria to go and attend COP28 – something that has nothing to do with policing. “In an attempt to justify the recklessness they said they only funded 422 people. What is Nigeria doing with 422 people in Dubai and average person spending at least $10,000 both for transportation and hotel and when they come back, they will collect estacode that is the kind of the country you are in. “At the time people are suffering and incapable of celebrating Christmas because nobody can afford to travel home. Nobody can afford to feed, students can’t afford to pay school fees. “Yet we have this useless government; I say it emphatically; the government is useless for embarking on jamboree trip to Dubai and they don’t even have time to speak. Majority of people that went Continue reading on https://featuredgist.com/nigerian-delegates-sponsored-by-tinubu-are-in-dubai-moving-around-taking-selfies-snap-chatting-sowore/ |
