Onion Prices Surge by 200% Ahead of Festivities
In anticipation of the upcoming Yuletide celebrations, the price of small-sized bulb onions in Nigerian markets has skyrocketed to between N200 and N300.

A recent market survey conducted by DAILY POST on Tuesday in Abuja’s Federal Capital Territory revealed this dramatic increase.
The survey indicated that at the Dutse and Kubwa village markets, the price of a single small-sized onion soared by 200 percent, reaching N300 on December 17, 2024, compared to N100 during the same period last November.

Furthermore, larger onions have also seen a price hike, rising from N300 to N500. A seller at the Dutse First Gate market, Abdullahi Yakubu, reported that a dustbin basket of onions now costs N250,000, up from a range of N170,000 to N192,000.
Yakubu explained that while price increases are common in the weeks leading up to the festive season, this year’s surge is particularly steep.
“It’s not unusual, but this time, the increase is significant. Last month, we bought a bag of onions for between N170,000 and N192,000. Now, it exceeds N250,000,” he noted.
Deborah Okoli expressed her frustration, stating that the soaring prices are becoming unaffordable for many Nigerians. “It’s shocking to see a small onion that used to cost N50 to N100 now priced at N300; this is outrageous,” she remarked.
This price surge coincides with a rise in Nigeria’s headline and food inflation rates, which have climbed to 34.60 percent and 39.93 percent, respectively,

CelebritiesOoni’s Ex-wife, Others Face Probe As 32 Children Killed At Ibadan Fun Fair by Featuredgist(op): 7:35am On Dec 19, 2024
Ooni’s ex-wife, others face probe as 32 children killed at Ibadan fun fair.
The Oyo State Police Command says it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged death of 32 children during a stampede at a funfair in Ibadan, the state capital, on Wednesday.
Multiple eyewitness accounts that the stampede occurred when participants rushed to gain access to the venue of the event reportedly organised by the ex-queen of the Ooni of Ife, Prophetess Naomi Shikemi, and an Ibadan-based broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat.
Investigations showed that the victims were stampeded to death while trying to break through the main gate of the school.
It was further gathered that provision was made for 5,000 children but the number that turned up for the event was reportedly over 7, 500.
Narrating the scenario in a video, an eyewitness at the scene of the incident, who did not mention her name, noted that the organisers had invited 5,000 participants for the funfair but the situation got out of control when the scene became rowdy leading to a stampede that led to several casualties.
Another participant claimed he lost a child during the incident.
Multiple sources told our correspondents that some of the children, including their parents, were said to have kept vigil at the venue of the event.

One of our correspondents observed that an uncontrollable crowd caused gridlock on the Basorun-Idi Ape Road.
An Administrative Officer of Patnas Hospital, Basorun, where some of the victims were admitted, Olufeyemi Tolulope, said, “The affected children were brought in some minutes past 8am. Six children were brought into the hospital out of which five died while the other one is recuperating.
One of the parents of the deceased, who was sighted at the hospital premises wailing, said, “I did not bargain for what happened to me. We slept together at home

FIFA World Cup 2034: Saudi Arabia commits to ensuring all fans, including the LGBTQ community are safe
FIFA confirmed that the Middle East nation would host the tournament on Wednesday, underlining the kingdom’s growing influence in world sport despite criticism of its human rights record.
At the same time, world football’s governing body confirmed that Morocco, Spain and Portugal will be joint hosts of the 2030 World Cup, in which three games will also be played in South America.
The awarding of the World Cup to Saudi Arabia will make the issue of human rights a major talking point again, just as it was two years ago when the tournament was staged in Qatar.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in closing remarks at Wednesday’s congress that the organisation was “inclusive” and “non-discriminatory”.

“We are of course aware of critics and fears, and I fully trust our hosts to address all open points from this process and deliver a FIFA World Cup which meets expectations,” he added.
The English FA explained its support for the 2030 and 2034 bids in a statement shortly after confirmation of the hosting decisions.
It said the FA board met Saudi football chiefs last month to discuss the bid in detail.
The FA said, “We asked them to commit to ensuring all fans would be safe and welcome in Saudi Arabia in 2034, including LGBTQ+ fans.
They assured us that they are fully committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all fans.
Football is a global game and is for everyone. Our commitment to diversity and inclusion means being respectful of all, including all religions and cultures.
We also believe that hosting World Cups can be a catalyst for positive change, which is best delivered by working collaboratively in partnership with host nations.
We will work with FIFA and (European governing body) UEFA to ensure that commitments

Vinicius Jr. leap frogs Nwabali, Boniface, Lookman, others to claim the FIFA best men’s player of the year
24-year-old Real Madrid and Brazil winger Vinicius Jr has been named the men’s player of the year at the FIFA Best Awards.
Vinicius’ club boycotted the recent Ballon d’Or ceremony after missing out to Manchester City’s Rodri – but he picked up this prize in Doha.
He played a vital role in Real’s Champions League and La Liga-winning campaign in 2023-24, scoring 24 goals and providing 11 assists.

This was the first time Vinicius has won the award and capped a happier finish to the season than October’s Ballon d’Or boycott.
The Ballon d’Or and FIFA Best Awards are the two most prestigious in football.
This was Vinicius’ first FIFA prize, with Lionel Messi winning the previous two awards and Robert Lewandowski the two before that.
Vinicius said, “It was looking impossible for

Fubara Wins As Appeal Court Nullifies Judgement Stopping Allocations To Rivers
The court of appeal has declared that the Federal High Court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the suit seeking to seize Rivers State’s allocation.
The suit was delivered today, December 13, 2024 by Justice Barka.
The Appeal Court’s verdict nullified the earlier judgment, stating that the Federal High Court overstepped its bounds by interfering in a state’s appropriation issue. According to Justice Barka, the listing of federal agencies does not grant the Federal High Court unrestricted jurisdiction.
Reacting, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, spokesperson for the Opposition Lawmakers Coalition, praised the Appeal Court’s decision, saying it has averted anarchy and constitutional disorder planned by the pro-Wike group.

He said, “The state house of assembly has a legitimate issue because of the illegal defections from PDP to APC which is currently before the court , the sacked lawmakers have been seeking for anarchy to be unleashed on the state and putting pressure on our courts in a desperate bid to undermine democracy in Rivers State. According to Supreme Court judgement, the 4-man House of Assembly is recognized by law and until the Supreme court decides on the issue of their illegal decampment, they don’t have right to make law for the state.
“Until by election is held to fill those vacant seats, the remaining members can preside.
“The decision of the appeal court to nullify the judgement of the federal high court to order for the seizure of allocation of rivers state government is a welcome development and a triumph for rule of law, victory for true federalism and constitutional governance and should be applauded by all Nigerians that these eminent judges have interpreted already established judicial principle by the Supreme Court
“They have asserted the sacred principle of our constitutional governance and democracy, that there’s a difference between fund disbursement, funding federation account and state appropriation act which is an internal affairs of the state, which falls

PoliticsActivist, Olamide Thomas Arrested By Police In Lagos by Featuredgist(op): 3:03pm On Dec 13, 2024
#FreeOlamide Trends!

The police have arrested Olamide Abiodun Thomas, the nurse and human rights activist whose Facebook friend was detained in November in a bid to get to her.

FIJ learnt that Thomas was arrested in Shomolu, Lagos State, in the early hours of Friday. A source claimed Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, ordered Thomas’ arrest.

Earlier, FIJ detailed how the police went after Lanre Shotunde, a businessman based in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as a placeholder for Thomas.

The Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the police arrested Shotunde in Abeokuta on November 6 and took him to the Sango Ota Police Station on the same day. They released him on bail on the night of November 7, but not without asking him to produce Thomas, whom he insisted he only knew online.

One month later, the police arrested her in Lagos.

As to why she was arrested, the police could not be reached for comments. Ben Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos police, did not answer his calls on Friday afternoon and has not responded to the messages sent to him via SMS and WhatsApp.

However, there are speculations that Thomas may have been arrested in connection to some of her social media posts criticising the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

When FIJ reported the manhunt launched after her in November, it was gathered that some policemen had been calling her for weeks. One of them had told her that someone had written a petition against her, but the details were withheld.

Thomas also issued a statement, claiming that the police were likely after her because of her role in the #EndSARS memorial and a video clip of Tunji Akinosi, a politician who was said to have assaulted her in 2023.

Omoyele Sowore, a human rights advocate and 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), confirmed Thomas’ arrest via a post on his social media page.

The PPRO of [the Nigeria] Police [Force], Muyiwa Adejobi, personally ordered the arrest of Olamide for her posts against police excesses in a WhatsApp group and on Facebook. This is completely unacceptable and will be resisted. The police must release her immediately,” Sowore wrote.

Crime37-year-old Nigerian Man Extradited To The U.S. Over $6m Cyber Fraud by Featuredgist(op): 8:32am On Dec 13, 2024
37-year-old Nigerian man extradited to the U.S. over $6m cyber fraud
A 37-year-old Nigerian man, Abiola Kayode, has been extradited to the District of Nebraska in the United States on a Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud indictment filed in 2019.
Kayode, who was on the FBI’s Most Wanted Cyber Criminal List, was arrested in Ghana in April 2023 and ultimately released to FBI special agents who took him to the US.
He had an initial appearance on the Indictment on December 11, 2024 and US Magistrate Judge Michael D. Nelson ordered he remain detained pending trial.
Accused of being part of a $6 million business email compromise (BEC) scheme between 2015 and 2016, Kayode allegedly helped defraud businesses by providing bank accounts used in the scam.
The scheme involved co-conspirators impersonating company executives via spoofed emails, tricking employees into wiring funds. Victims of romance scams were also reportedly used to launder money through their accounts.
Several co-conspirators have already been convicted, with sentences ranging from 45 to 96 months in prison, while others remain at large.
Speaking in a statement, FBI Omaha Special Agent in Charge Eugene Kowel said: “Four years ago, we identified six Nigerian nationals suspected of defrauding ding individual victims and businesses in Nebraska and other states of millions of dollars.
Abiola Kayode is the second of those co-conspirators to be extradited to stand trial in Nebraska. Our message to the remaining four co-conspirators; we are coming for you. Dismantling cyber-criminal groups that victimize U.S. citizens is a priority for the FBI, DOJ, and our international law enforcement partners.
The FBI, working together with our partners in Ghana, particularly the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice, the Ghana Police Service – INTERPOL, and the Ghana Immigration Service, will continue to pursue and bring to justice criminals who engage

Hope for Nigerians as minister of power reveals 150MW will be added to the power grid by year-end
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has announced that an additional 150 megawatts will be added to Nigeria’s national grid before the end of 2024, as part of efforts to improve electricity supply.
Speaking to State House correspondents after a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Adelabu highlighted the progress made under the Siemens-led Presidential Power Initiative (PPI).
According to him, “We have completed about 80% of the pilot stage, which includes the importation, installation, and commissioning of 10 power transformers and 10 power mobile substations.
These efforts have already added 750 megawatts to our grid capacity, and by year-end, an additional 150 megawatts will be realized upon full completion of the pilot phase.”
Adelabu also stressed the importance of the Siemens project in addressing the aging and fragile state of Nigeria’s power infrastructure.
The next phase of the initiative will focus on rehabilitating 14 existing substations and building 23 new ones across the country.
“We are transitioning to Phase One of the project, with the first batch of this phase already concluded

Politics“reduce Petrol Price To N300 Per Litre Before Christmas,” Bode George Tells Pres by Featuredgist(op): 10:31pm On Dec 12, 2024
“Reduce petrol price to N300 per litre before Christmas,” Bode George tells president Tinubu
Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has called on President Bola Tinubu to lower the price of fuel to N300 per litre.
Speaking at a press conference in Lagos on Wednesday, December 11, he stated that such a reduction would allow Nigerians to better enjoy the festive season.
According to him, “What am I suggesting is that by the 15th or the middle of this month, President Tinubu, if he really believes that these Nigerians voted him into power, it is time to give back to them.

There are two months in any calendar year that are very important months. Whether you are a Christian, a Muslim, an atheist, or a traditionalist, it is common and it is all over the world. The months of December and January are the most important months.
From the middle of December, at least to the end of January, the cost of petrol should be reduced to N300 per litre. The government can absorb the losses.
With this, you will be sending a lot of messages of happiness across the tribes and homes. Everybody in Nigeria will be happy because it will positively impact this period of the year.
It is a challenge and he can do it. If Madam First Lady could donate N1 billion to a university, she could also donate into the coffers to bear this cost. What’s wrong? So that everybody will be able to sleep well with N300 per litre across the board.
So by the end of January, in the meantime, the prayers, the happiness, the impact of that will drive people up. And the Almighty God will answer our prayers. We need this in this December and January to put a smile on the faces of people.
Who is the Minister of Petroleum? So he has a singular effort and if he really looks at these cuts in fuel price across all political parties, all human beings, all Nigerians, he will see the joy in them because

CrimePastor Tobi Adegboyega May Be Deported To Nigeria Soon by Featuredgist(op): 2:57am On Dec 04, 2024
Pastor Tobi Adegboyega Whose UK Church Was Shut Down Over Alleged £1.87m Fraud May Be Deported To Nigeria Soon
A Nigerian pastor whose church was shut down over an alleged £1.87 million fraud has lost his fight against deportation, despite claiming it would breach his human rights.
An immigration tribunal has ruled that Tobi Adegboyega, 44, the cousin of John Boyega, the Star Wars actor, should be deported back to his native Nigeria after investigations, including by The Telegraph, exposed misuse of funds by his church.
Mr Adegboyega was head of SPAC Nation, a controversial church shut down after failing to properly account for more than £1.87 million of outgoings and operating with a lack of transparency.
He claimed deportation would breach his right under the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR) to a family life – having married a British woman. He also said the attempt to remove him by the Home Office failed to take account of his community work with SPAC.
Describing a “charismatic” community leader of a large, well-organised church, his legal team claimed that he had “intervened in the lives of many hundreds of young people, predominantly from the black communities in London, to lead them away from trouble”.
He claimed his work had been “lauded” by politicians including Boris Johnson and senior figures within the Metropolitan Police, although no testimony by them was submitted to the court. He said that without his personal presence in London, projects that he had masterminded would fall apart or reduce in size.
However, the tribunal was told the Home Office contended “all is not as it seems”.
“Various manifestations of [Mr Adegboyega’s] church have been closed down, by either the Charity Commission or the High Court, because of concerns over its finances and lack of transparency,” according to the judgment.
‘Selling their own blood’
“Former members of the church have alleged that it is a cult, in which impoverished young people are encouraged to do anything they can to donate money, including taking out large loans, committing

We won’t rest until Nigerians experience a better living standard — President Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu says he won’t rest until Nigerians feel the positive impact of his reforms in their pockets and enjoy a better standard of living.
The president said this while reacting to the newly released third quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP) report by the National Bureau of Statistics.
Nigeria’s GDP grew by 3.46 per cent, compared to the 3.19 per cent growth recorded in the second quarter, according to the NBS.

A statement by Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare stated that the growth in GDP showed that President Tinubu’s quest for a more robust boost in the economy and, by extension, a better standard of living for all Nigerians is on course.
Tinubu said his administration has not and will never forget his promise of a $1 trillion economy by 2030.
“Once the economy is rebased by early 2025 to capture its dynamism and record significant changes that have occurred in different sectors, the country will be on its way to shared prosperity.
I am excited by the latest report from the National Bureau of Statistics that our economy grew in the third quarter more than last quarter and even beyond projected estimates. While I welcome this development, the latest figure also shows the much work that needs to be done.

Lagos Youths Reject Owerri Coalition’s Endorsement Of Seyi Tinubu As Governor In 2027, Say President’s Son Free To Govern Osun, Imo

The Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths has rejected the recent endorsement of President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi, Lagos State governor.

The Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL), an umbrella body of youth groups drawn across the six geopolitical zones, on Tuesday endorsed Seyi Tinubu for Lagos governor in 2027.

In a statement jointly issued in Owerri on Tuesday by the President General of CONYL Comrade Goodluck Ibem, Secretary Comrade Junard Abubakar, Public Relations Officer, Comrade Iniobong Sampson and Publicity Secretary Comrade Adeyemo Adewale, the body said it arrived at the resolution following a recent enlarged meeting of its leaders.

According to the coalition, Seyi Tinubu is free to go to Osun State, where Tinubu reportedly hails from or Imo State, where CONYL issued its joint statement, to become the governor.

However, in a statement signed by Abdul Kareem Whyte for the Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths on Wednesday, the group said there is no vacancy for non-indigenes in Lagos State.

It said, “Our attention has been drawn to the recent endorsement of Seyi Tinubu for Lagos governor by a group known as Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL) and the group is described as the umbrella body of all the youth groups drawn across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria.

The said Coalition sat in Owerri, Imo State and publicly issued the statement on endorsement, while we know Mr Seyi Tinubu has his democratic rights as a Nigerian, we condemn the ill-fated endorsement and described it as anti-democracy and a deliberate move by some faceless individuals to deny indigenes of Lagos State right to govern themselves in 2027.

“It is no longer news that since 1999, no true blood indigenes of Lagos State have taken over the mantle of leadership in the State (except one), the marginalization which underscores the essence of democracy and an outright denial of the indigenes of Lagos State the right to govern themselves.

We know as a fact that there will soon be vacancy in Osun State where Mr Seyi Tinubu can best exercise his democratic rights unhindered. And if the people of Owerri in Imo are also interested in benefiting from the experience Mr Seyi Tinubu has acquired in recent times, they can push him to succeed Governor Uzodinma.

As for us there is no vacancy for non-indigenes in Lagos State in 2027. The marginalization is too much and the marginalization has led to the underdevelopment in the state.

“It’s unbelievable that since 1999, our hinterlands are not developed, no good roads, Lagos State leaving on debts and our traditional system distorted by successive governments.

“We are also aware of the moves by some non-indigenes to penetrate our traditional rulers in getting endorsements and ratifications from them.

“Recently, one of the aspirants suddenly traced his ancestry to Ojo Local Government after spending more than a decade in power without identifying with the Awori People of Ojo in Lagos State.

“We are hereby calling on the Oba of Lagos to beware of persons who will soon seek indigeneship of Lagos State because of 2027.”

According to the group, it is ready to “fight dirty if the Oba of Lagos allows such anti Lagos Indigenes move”.

“We advise the leadership of CONYL to channel their energies towards advocating for good governance and policies that will benefit the youth constituency rather than instigating political crises in Lagos State,” it added.

Passenger luggage delay to attract $170, N10,000 fines – NCAA
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has vowed to take tough measures against airlines that delay passengers’ luggage.
The regulatory agency said it will impose fines of $170 and N10,000 on foreign and local airlines, respectively for delayed passengers’ luggage as a first measure to guide against such an act.
In October in Abuja, the NCAA stated that passengers could claim up to $1,000 for missing luggage on domestic flights as well as $1,288 Special Drawing Rights for international flights.
Speaking on Monday during a roadshow organised by NCAA at the Lagos airport to sensitise passengers who will be travelling during the yuletide, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, assured that the regulatory agency would implement the sanctions against any erring airline to the latter.

Achimugu regretted that for a very long time, most of the air travellers were unaware of their rights, which made the airlines continue to violate them.
The NCAA publicist explained that with the roadshow, the travelling public would be more aware of their rights in the NCAA acts and the appropriate quarters to complain to.
He said: “For way too long, Nigerians have been claiming not to know about the existence and the duties of the NCAA. Our duty, which is what we owe Nigerians, is to bring awareness to the industry. The passengers need to become more aware of their rights so that airlines will not continue to cheat them.
“The little things about the regulations that the passengers need to know, for instance, if you arrive at an airport and your luggage didn’t arrive with you, most passengers do not know that they have a right to demand compensation from the airlines.
“If it is a domestic flight, you can walk to the airline’s counter to demand for your N10,000 for not bringing your bag with you. For international flights, it is $170

DSS arrests Ladi Adebutu over attempts to assassinate Vice Chairmanship candidate
The relatively peaceful local government polls in Ogun State turned awry on Saturday when some illegal policemen assembled by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, Hon. Ladi Adebutu opened fire on the vice chairmanship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikenne Local Government, Hon. Muhammed Olaitan Efuwape, and one voter named Biola.
Hon. Efuwape was said to have escaped death by the whiskers with injuries, but Biola wasn’t so lucky as the gunshots shattered his legs, and he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is receiving medical attention. It was learned that Adebutu illegally brought in over 40 policemen from MOPOL 49 in Lagos, with PDP thugs riding on Okadas, going around and trying to snatch ballot boxes while brandishing guns and other weapons in Ikenne Local Government in their desperate attempt to scuttle the electoral process.

"Stop keeping the company of alcoholics” – Atiku camp hits back at Makinde
A two-time Director of Youth Mobilisation in the Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign in 2019 and 2023, Hon. Dimeji Fabiyi, has said that age cannot stop the former vice president from contesting the 2027 presidential election.

Fabiyi was reacting to the remarks by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on the criteria for presidential candidates.
Governor Makinde had insinuated that age was a limiting factor for presidential hopefuls in the party.
Though Atiku’s name was not mentioned by Makinde, Atiku, who is still nursing presidential ambition in the next general election, will be 81 years old by 2027.

Fabiyi in his response to Makinde, admonished the Oyo State governor “to devote more time to reading good books and familiarise himself more with intellectuals, instead of keeping the company of alcoholics, so that when next he speaks, he won’t be mistaken for someone who prides himself for drinking 40 years old whiskey.”
FCT minister Nyesom Wike, who is a close ally of Makinde, had last year said he was drinking 40-year-old whiskey at the time Atiku lost the 2027 election.
Fabiyi also noted that ‘’Atiku is of sound mind and body, with the intellectual firmament that measures far ahead of Makinde.”
Fabiyi noted that while Atiku may be older than Makinde, he has the experience and a cosmopolitan ability to solve problems.
He said: “As a matter of fact, I challenge Seyi Makinde to an intellectual contest with Atiku, and we shall see how his arrogance and presumed youthfulness will be humbled.
“I have known Atiku for almost three decades, and I can tell you for free that he’s an avid reader. When Seyi Makinde is in town, he should seek out how resourceful and flourishing Atiku’s library is.
“Atiku is not a connoisseur of expensive wines and

Nigeria under ‘Emilokan’ is sinking into chaos, insecurity, corruption – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has labelled Nigeria a ‘failing state,’ citing widespread corruption and leadership failures under President Bola Tinubu.

Obasanjo said at an event in New Haven, Connecticut, USA on Saturday, November 16.

According to him, “Nigeria’s situation, as we can see and understand, is bad. The more the immorality and corruption of a nation, the more the nation sinks into chaos, insecurity, conflict, discord, division, disunity, depression, youth restiveness, confusion, viol+nce, and underdevelopment.
That’s the situation mostly in Nigeria in the reign of Baba-go-slow and Emilokan. The failing state status of Nigeria is confirmed and glaringly indicated and manifested for every honest person to see through the consequences of the level of our pervasive corruption, mediocrity, immorality, misconduct, mismanagement, perversion, injustice, incompetence and all other forms of iniquity. But yes, there is hope.

The Nigerian problem is the unwillingness or inability of its leaders to rise to the responsibility, to the challenge of personal example which are the hallmarks of true leadership.
As one of the most pervasive forms of corruption, a situation where powerful individuals, institutions, companies, or groups within or outside a country use corruption to shape a nation’s policies, legal environment, and economy, to benefit their own private interests.
What is happening in Nigeria – right before our eyes – is state capture: The purchase of National assets by political elites – and their family members – at bargain prices, the allocation of national resources – minerals, land, and even human resources – to local, regional, and international actors. It must be prohibited an

Gov. Abiodun’s former aide, Abidemi Rufai, released from U.S. prison, faces deportation after fraud conviction
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun’s former aide, Abidemi Rufai, has been released from prison in the United States, Peoples Gazette reports.
The 47-year-old was freed from the U.S. Bureau of Prisons’ custody at Fort Dix, New Jersey, on November 15, 2024.
Rufai, who was convicted of a felony, is now preparing for deportation, in line with the terms of his guilty plea. His Nigerian passport, which had been held by authorities, was returned to him on October 21, 2024, after he filed a motion to reduce his sentence.
When he pleaded guilty to allegations of tax fraud and aggravated identity theft in 2022, Mr Rufai waived his rights to challenge deportation after serving out his jail sentence.

He was sentenced to 60 months in prison on two counts of fraud in 2022 after prosecutors presented a strong case of multimillion-dollar fraud backed with 100,000 pages of evidence before a federal judge in Tacoma, Washington. The terms were scheduled to run concurrently.
Mr Rufai, widely known as Elele Ruffy, was scheduled to be released on Valentine’s Day in 2025 but a judge approved his motion to be released earlier based on new sentencing guidelines, and the U.S. Bureau of Prisons forwent the three months left of his sentence.
He was ordered to pay $607,000 in restitution to the U.S. government agencies across multiple states, and a Nigerian court ordered the seizure of his Lekki mansion in Lagos and bank accounts after the anti-graft....

While speaking with journalists, the Mechanical Engineering graduate admitted to the crimes and confessed that the bribe was part of his efforts to clear his name.

Banks that give hawkers money will be penalized — CBN issues fresh directives

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has instructed banks to primarily distribute cash through Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).
In a circular to banks on Friday, Solaja Olayemi, the acting director of the CBN’s currency operations department, cautioned banks against handing naira notes to individuals involved in the illegal sale of the currency.
The apex bank said it commenced spot checks to ensure efficient and responsible cash disbursement to the public and prevent the disbursement of mint banknotes to persons hawking naira notes.
“Please refer to the subsisting circular on mystery shopping exercise and periodic spot checks on cash distribution/disbursement activities of Deposit Money Banks (DMBs).

As you will recall, these initiatives were introduced to: 1. Monitor and prevent practices that facilitate flow of mint banknotes to “hawkers” of naira cash, thereby discouraging abuse of the Naira; and 2. Ensure that DMBs support efficient and responsible cash disbursement to the public.
For the avoidance of doubt, it should be noted that: a) DMBs, to whom cash seized from “hawkers” of cash is traced, will be penalized 10% of the total value of cash withdrawn on the day the seized cash was withdrawn from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Every subsequent offense will be charged incremental penalty of 5%.
Banks found engaging in cash hoarding, diversion, or any actions that hinder efficient cash distribution, “including violations of the Clean Note Policy, will incur appropriate sanctions”.
As we approach the yuletide season, with an anticipated increase in cash demand. DMBs are advised to implement internal controls for responsible disbursement and accountability in respect of mint banknotes payouts at their outlets.
To enhance access to cash, we encourage

Stop blaming government. We must rise up to support the country — Ooni to Nigerians

Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ile-Ife, says Nigerians should take proactive steps to improve the country rather than blame the government.
Ogunwusi spoke in Akure, the Ondo state capital, on Friday at the official showcase of Ojaja Smart City, noting that the need to address the housing deficit in the country led him to initiate the project. “A lot of good things can happen in this country, and if we believe in ourselves and believe in Nigeria that Nigerians can do it, then our deficit of housing will continue to reduce gradually,” he said.
“We cannot continue to cry over it. We know that we have a housing deficit in the country, but we need to make do with what we have to get results.” The Ooni appealed to Nigerians to patronise local brands, noting that 90 percent of the products used for the project were locally sourced.
He said the Ojaja smart city is a 100,000-square-metre land project that would help the country meet its housing needs. “We need to buy in Nigeria; we need to produce in Nigeria, including our housing needs,” the Ooni added.
“And our project here is a city on its own. It is over 100,000 square metre, and we are trying to showcase what is possible in Nigeria. We do not need to leave government to do everything for us, and I believe Nigeria will be in a better place if we rise up to support the government at all levels. We are always blaming the government, including the media, but what are

PoliticsHardship: Daily Petrol Consumption Drops By 92% Under President Tinubu — Report by Featuredgist(op): 10:34pm On Oct 21, 2024
Hardship: Daily petrol consumption drops by 92% under President Tinubu — Report
Daily consumption of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) or petrol in Nigeria has dropped drastically under one year after President Bola Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023.

Data obtained by Channels Television from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Product Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) Daily Truck Out Report, showed that consumption as of August 20, 2024, was 4.5 million litres per day.
The daily petrol consumption as of May 2023 was 60, 000 million litres per day, according to the NMDPRA.
An estimation brings daily consumption down by 92 per cent after May 29, 2023.
Analysis of the report, shockingly, revealed that out of the 36 states of the federation, only 16 states got product allocation from the Nigeran National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) in the month under review.

This meant that those states that did not get product allocation suffered scarcity in August. A breakdown of how NNNPCL distributed the products among the 16 states, showed that Niger got the highest allocation of 21 trucks, amounting to 940, 000 litres daily, Lagos got the second highest of 12 trucks amounting to 726, 001 litres, and Kaduna got 12 trucks of 454, 001 litres.
Other states such as Oyo got 12 trucks of 454 litres, Kano 9 trucks, Ondo 6 trucks, Kwara 6 trucks, Edo 4 trucks, and FCT 4 trucks. The likes of Sokoto state received 4 trucks from the NNPCL, Ogun state got three trucks, Osun three, Gombe one, Benue one, Ekiti one and Kebbi, one truck.
President Tinubu on May 29, 2023, declared an end to petrol subsidies, which at that time had gulped about N12tn in 10 years. According to the president, payment of petrol subsidies was no longer sustainable as it had plunged the country into huge debts.

Dangote Refinery asks Court to void import licenses of NNPCL, Matrix, and four others in N100 billion case

Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to void import licenses issued to the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPC), Matrix Petroleum Services Limited, A. A. Rano Limited, and four other companies for the purpose of importing refined petroleum products that are already being produced by Dangote without shortfalls.
In suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1324/2024, Dangote Refinery is also seeking N100 billion in damages against the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) for allegedly continuing to issue import licenses to NNPCL, Matrix, and other companies for importing petroleum products such as Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and Jet Fuel (aviation turbine fuel) into Nigeria, “despite the production of AGO and Jet-A1 that exceeds the current daily consumption of petroleum products in Nigeria by the Dangote Refinery.”
Joined as defendants in the case are NMDPRA, NNPCL, Aym Shafa Limited, A. A. Rano Limited, T. Time Petroleum Limited, 2015 Petroleum Limited, and Matrix Petroleum Services Limited (1st to 7th defendants).
In its originating summons dated September 6, 2024, and exclusively seen by Nairametrics, the plaintiff’s lawyer, Ogwu James Onoja, SAN, asked the court to declare that NMDPRA is allegedly in violation of Sections 317(cool and (9) of the Petroleum Industry Act by issuing licenses for the importation of petroleum products.
He stated that such licenses should only be issued in circumstances where there is a petroleum product shortfall.
He also urged the court to declare that NMDPRA is in violation of its statutory responsibilities under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) for not encouraging local refineries such as Dangote Refinery.
In an affidavit deposed by Ahmed Hashem, the Group General Manager of Government and Strategic Relations at Dangote Refinery, he submitted that the import licenses granted to other companies by NMDPRA for the importation of AGO and Jet-A1 are

Federal Government Investigative Panel Clears Bobrisky Of Allegations In Prison Scandal
An investigative panel instituted against Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has found no evidence that he/she left prison or received special treatment during the six-month sentence.
Bobrisky, a well-known crossdresser, was sentenced on April 12, 2024, for abusing the Nigerian naira and was released on August 5, 2024.
The probe was initiated by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following a viral video posted by controversial activist, VeryDarkMan.
In the video, a voice, allegedly Bobrisky’s, claimed that she bribed officials from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to drop a money laundering charge.
It was further alleged that a “godfather” and Haliru Nababa, the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), helped ensure that Bobrisky served her sentence in a private apartment instead of prison.
On September 30, 2024, Tunji-Ojo launched an investigation into the Nigerian Correctional Service, led by Magdalena Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior. The panel was tasked with looking into the allegations of corruption and other violations.
On Monday, Uju Agomoh, Executive Director of Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), presented the initial findings of the panel at the Ministry of Interior.
