Following the viral Expose of BBC Africa on Sexual harassment which has led to the suspension of two UNILAG lecturers Dr. Boniface and Samuel Oladipo. The menace of Sexual Harassment and Sex-for-Marks isn't just new to the Nigerian tertiary institutions. This has been going on for several decades and it flourishes in both private and public institutions. Here are a few ways we can address this issue urgently. SIGNING THE SEXUAL HARASSMENT BILL INTO LAW The 8th senate assembly passed the "Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Education Institution Prohibition Bill" to prescribe a 5-year jail term for any lecturer, educationist or person in a position of authority in any tertiary institution in Nigeria found guilty. Unfortunately, the bill was not signed into law. We are appealing to the Senate to fast-track this bill. This will serve as a deterrent to lecturers who perpetrate such evil acts. USE OF TECH IN EXAM PROCESS AND GRADING Students don't have to interface with lecturers to request for remark. Exam scores can be defended and proven with the use of technology to ensure transparency. we've had numerous cases of students being blackmailed with their exams. If students can be assured of transparency in their tests and exams, there will be no need to succumb to the pressures of randy lecturers as they have no hold over their victims. FEEDBACK STRATEGY All institutions should have an efficient feedback system where students can rate their lecturers based on their performance and other relevant criteria. The proper authorities in these institutions can use the results to assess lecturer performance and take the necessary steps to make sure the students are receiving the best education. CONCLUSION Students have suffered enough from lecturer harassment. Whether sex or money for marks, this madness has to end. Some students have had to drop out, fail courses, spend extra years in school and some go as far as committing suicide because of harassment by lecturers. We are glad that society is challenging this menace but we plead with the relevant governing bodies and agencies to put necessary measures in place to protect students and save their future. This is the second time the professor who resided outside the campus was kidnapped within a year. The command also confirmed the arrest of two suspected kidnappers in Song Local Government Area of the state. DSP Yahaya told NAN that the suspects were picked after they wrote a letter to their target, threatening to kidnap him if he failed to pay a certain amount of money. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has stated that Solar Power Projects commissioned under the Energizing Education Programme is a testament to the fulfillment of the Next Level agenda, of President Muhammadu Buhari. Prof. Osinbajo said this recently in Kano State, where he commissioned the 7.1MW Solar Hybrid Power Plant, at Bayero University Kano, which is the largest off-grid solar hybrid power plant in Africa. According to him, this is the second Solar Plant to be commissioned within one month. He, therefore, reiterated the government’s commitment to powering Nigeria – one university, one market, one community at a time.” He revealed that the installed 7.1MW decentralized Solar Hybrid Power Plant will supply power to over 58,000 students and staff. The Vice President further emphasized that, the ultimate goal of the Buhari administration’s Next level roadmap policies and objectives under the Energizing Education Programme, is to increase access to modern technical education in safe and illuminated learning environments, empower the girl child, and create jobs in the power sector value chain, amongst others. He added that this project would create 182 energy related jobs from power system engineers to electricians as well as train 20 young female Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students with the skills to contribute to strengthening our energy sector. He said, “This significant initiative upholds the Federal Government’s adherence to global best practice, as we transition to cleaner sources of energy in line with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. These projects being implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) are strategic to fulfilling our commitments to the Agreement as they strive to reduce Nigeria’s carbon footprint. “The leveraging of renewable energy technologies is in line with the Federal Government mandate and related activities. Nigeria’s plan to reduce carbon emissions by 20% unconditionally and 45% with international support by 2030 aims to limit the damaging effects of climate change. “This remarkable off-grid solar hybrid power plant being commissioned today is already on its way to bringing these goals and objectives to fruition.” Source: https://www.feedbackstrategy.net/single-news.php?id=404-largest-solar-plant-in-africa-begin-established-in-bayero-university,-kano

Teewhy2:The feedback system can help mitigate the fear of lecturer reprisals. Any lecturer that isn't performing well will have to step up or quit. Students deserve the best and Lecturers have played god for so long. |
dmltoyin:Exactly. In other parts of the world, the feedback system is open for all to see. If a lecturer is performing well, the feedback system will record that. LASU needs to do better. |
asuustrike1:It the necessary structure are in place, it cannot be abuse. for example, Only students of a particular course can provide feedback and review the performance of the course lecturer. |
yinkacruxzy:Interesting move.. Do you have any idea when the Unilorin feedback system started? |

The management of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, has created a new portal on its website that offers students the opportunity to evaluate their lecturers. Director, Quality Assurance Committee of the institution, Rafiu Okuneye, who heads the committee overseeing the project, said the new system was being introduced to students across faculties to ensure its appropriate utilization. The only limitation is that the assessment will not be publicly available as opposed to what is obtainable in other universities around the world. The feedback will directly be deposited on the university management database. This also means that a visitor to the website would not likely see the assessments against each lecturer’s profile page. The LASU management said it hoped to help lecturers improve in their course delivery in the process. Providing guide on the steps to follow, Okuneye said, “Students would have to first visit the university’s website at www.lasu.edu.ng. On the home page, they would hover on ‘students services,’ which would show a drop-down menu.” Source: https://www.feedbackstrategy.net/single-news.php?id=357-lasu-launches-online-lecturer-feedback-system

Deicide:Then they aren't needed in the Educational system. Lecturers aren't supposed to play gods. Even gods can be reasoned with. Such Lecturers should be reported and investigated. If found guilty, He/She should be demoted or dismissed. |
Deicide:Take for example, you are a lecturer, and your student approaches you to inform you that what you taught wasn't the same as what he/she discovered during your research. The students go on to tell you that his/her classmates too are confused about the topic. What do you do as the Lecturer? Though we also agree that there must be a monitoring board to appraise the growth of lecturers, Feedback too can help the lecturer improve. |
Lecturers don't improve themselves because they don't receive FEEDBACK from their students. Coaches get Feedback from their players Pastors Get Feedback From their congregation Businesses get feedback from their customers HOW ABOUT LECTURERS ![]() ?That is why we created the Feedback Strategy Platform to provide Lecturers with feedback to enable them to become better. Visit https://www.feedbackstrategy.net to rate your lecturers, discover opportunities like scholarships and get relevant information on tertiary institutions all over Nigeria.

You can provide feedback to us and we will alert the proper authorities to handle such situations. you can also rate your lecturers and review them on our website. https://www.feedbackstrategy.net/
