This is wrong. You're referring to Obatala here not Oduduwa. Obatala is he who descended with a cock and a bowl of sand not Oduduwa

You are right. I intended to say Obatala. Olodumare was the Father of both Obatala and Oduduwa. Olodumare sent Obatala from heaven to create life form on earth, and he landed in Ile-Ife. His brother, Oduduwa, later usurped his authority before he could consolidate his hold on power.

But do you realise that Obatala was considered 'king' in the then 'newly' created Ile-Ife? -- a position his brother [Oduduwa] took? I urge you to read extensively on this topic.

Obatala later went on to become deified as the head of Orisa in the heavenly realms. Obatala was not allowed to consolidate his hold on power, due to the usurpation by his brother, Oduduwa. This is the reason why the lineage is rightly that of Oduduwa.

The point, sir, is that all of this -- the creation narrative, the origin of Yoruba people, the first organized Yoruba rulership etc. -- is credited to Ile-Ife. I am not so obsessed with who dominates who; I just want to point out that the Ooni-ship [first effectively occupied by Oduduwa, and now occupied by Adeyeye Ogunwusi] antedates ALL Yoruba monarchical systems [or any semblance of organized rulership].

The Oyo Empire under the Alaafin-ship was (is) the STRONGEST, but it doesn't change the fact that it originated from Ile-Ife [under the rule of the Ooni]. Power is transient; established facts are immutable.

All dis ur story, what i'm telling you is that in terms of monarchy, Ooni is not superior to Alaafin. Moses is the deliverer of Israel, but till today, the lineage of David (a King) is recognized as the royal head of Israel. In cultural or spiritual matters, Moses will come first. But in political matters, David will be known. There is no question of superiority here. Both serve different purpose. If you can understand Ooni and Alaafin from that perspective, you'll be the better for it. Just like that other guy said; even the present Ooni and Alaafin have closed rank. It may be that he has the support of the Ooni in writing this letter. Even the Ooni himself referred to him as the foremost king during his visit to his palace in the early days of his reign so all this ur argument no go anywhere.
.

I am not an alarmist. I don't create contention where there is none. I, with the hindsight of history, brought another nuance to the letter. It is not a mischievous thing to do, it is for us [all of us] to learn, unlearn and be improved.

Let me ask you a question: who is the head of the Yoruba race [and who represents him]?

P.S.: Oro jagidijagan ko lo wa nile. We are learning [it is only a fool that thinks and feels all-knowing].

I don't really know where you're going with this. Oyo empire is well known and it stretched from parts of Benin to Dahomey in Benin Republic. You can tell me where Ife empire was and where it covered. The different clans warred against each other due to the lose structure of the Oyo monarchy. Whenever there was a weak Alaafin, the other kingdoms fought and obtained independence. Whenever a strong Alaafin emerged, they were quickly conquered and bought under his rulership. I'm yet to see a town conquered by Ife or under the control. Except superiority means something different, Alaafin enthroned Kings such as Olubadan, Soun, Timi, Afonja Ogedengbe e.t.c. You can tell me which particular kings Ooni enthroned. Bottomline is, the first recognized monarchical system in Yoruba land remains the Alaafin. If you can show me the monarchical system of Ife, i'll agree with you.

Sir, you don't get my drift. Yes, Oyo empire was the most dominant of all Yoruba spheres of influence. Oyo was the strongest and it had no peer in strength in its heydays. However, it was never in contention that Oyo was founded by the son of the then Ooni of Ile-Ife. The relationship between Ile-Ife and Oyo is [should be] a non-threatening one -- a father-son relationship. Even if Oyo grew to the status of a superpower, it would always be to the pride of Ile-Ife [the home of all Alaafins, and indeed all Yorubas].

The Ooni Oduduwa [of Ile-Ife], whom Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II represents, is the FATHER of all Yorubas. All Yorubas [including Oyo people and their Alaafin] trace their genealogy to Ile-Ife ALONE.

It is no contest. It us just the ego of the human occupants clashing.

The greatness and accomplishments of a son (however awe-inspiring) should never be perceived to be threatening to the position of his father; it is a great honor to the father.

A priest is not a king. A king wears a crown, has a staff of office, beads and a council to boot. I don't know where you got the inferiority of Alaafin from. He heads the greatest Empire in Yoruba history so, how come he is inferior. When the Alaafin held sway, they had a non-aggression pact with Ife but did not defer to Ooni in any way. The Oyo kingdom was ruled by the Alaafin without any deference or homage to Ooni. As a matter of fact, other kings paid homage and sent royalties to alaafin but never to the Ooni. So where's the superiority?

You see, you cannot place something on nothing. Oranmiyan, an Ife Prince, founded Oyo on one of his expeditions outside of Ile-Ife and became the first Alaafin there. Ile-Ife was a thriving civilization before Oyo, and it had its own rulership [whether they were considered kings or priests]. We can not have a Prince without a King somewhere; the presence of a son presupposes the existence of a father. It is a straightforward thing, whatever the Alaafin becomes, he is forever a son to the ruler [priest or whatever you term it] of Ile-Ife. However far Oyo goes, it will always have its roots rightly traced back to Ile-Ife.

Sir, before the colonial masters took control, the different kingdoms [founded by sons of Oduduwa, the first Ooni of Ife -- or the first ruler/priest of Ile-Ife, as you have said] in the areas now known as Yorubaland were running independently. In fact, they were almost always feuding. They warred against eachother and plundered eachother, so the stronger always levied some sort of tribute on the weaker as a show of allegiance to the superior, and also to guarantee protection.

Oyo became prominent because of its military superiority. You should know that history is replete with stories of how Empires broke off from subsisting ones. For example, today, the ruling house in Ilorin is Fulani, though Ilorin is a Yoruba town founded by an Oyo general [Afonja] who rebelled against the then Alaafin. Afonja broke relations with Oyo and refused to defer to Oyo. The act of Afonja's treason and non-deference to Oyo -- and even the reality of the Alimi rule over Ilorin -- does not negate the fact that Ilorin traces its root to Oyo.

There was no point of bickering between Oyo and Ile-Ife; it was [is] settled that Ile-Ife was the cradle. The contest between the two stools is a relatively recent phenomenon.

Without Oyo, Ile-Ife would still stand; but would there be Oyo if there was no Ile-Ife? Of course, no!

You shouldn't be ignorant of the animosity between the Alaafin and the Ooni. It has been going on for decades. The Ooni has always been accorded the post of 'numero uno' -- even by the colonial masters -- and this has always angered the Alaafin. We aren't discussing the face-value message of the letter. I think you are actually the one not on the same page with the discussion that was stirred up.

Like I said before, you're still alluding to the same thing. Oduduwa was never referred to as a King. He was instead revered as a god. Which is why his title is Oonirisa (Eni orisa). Compare that to Oba of Benin or Alaafin of Oyo. These two wear crowned and beaded as Kings outright which was why they had a monarchical system in place.
.

We are saying the same thing. There is no basis for comparison [which the Alaafin has been doing for decades now]: Ooni is a god/deity, while the Alaafin is a mortal [a descendant of the Ooni Oduduwa].

No King, Alaafin, Alake, Oba etc., should even dare look in the face of the Ooni'risa. They are in different cosmos.

I like your use of words. Moses was the first political and spiritual leader of Israelites. Saul is the first King of Israel. They are the same function but different titles. Alaafin is the first king in Yorubaland. It is not debatable. He is the first to wear a crown as King and have a recognized palace as such. You'll note the words the Alaafin used to describe himself. The pre-colonial head: Oyo was the largest Yoruba empire before the british came; King and head: He's using his position as first King to claim headship of Yorubas. More importantly, I suspect he feels the Ooni chickened out in Aso rock, that's why he feels he need to take the mantle to express things as they are.

Well, the first Alaafin of Oyo was Oranmiyan [an Ife prince -- Son of the Ooni]. Ajaka succeeded Oranmiyan as the second Alaafin. An Ife prince founded Oyo -- it was founded during an expedition.

The authority [which the Ife prince Oranmiyan -- son of the Ooni -- exercised] derived directly from Ife. No matter how influential a son becomes, he can't predate his father, ditto his father's throne.

P.S.: the authority that a king wields is in the throne [not in personam]. Even if we are to go with the argument of the Alaafin camp that the forebear of the occupants of the Ooni-ship was a 'priest' to the original Ooni [Oduduwa]. Well, then it follows commonsensically that the Alaafin cannot be sitting on an inferior throne [the 'Alaafin-ship'] and still claim superiority. Ile-Ife is the nucleus [root, origin, epicenter etc.] of the Yoruba race, and whoever sits directly on the throne of Oduduwa IN ILE-IFE naturally reigns supreme in Yorubaland.

Kano may be the most important emirate in the caliphate, the rural and rustic Sokoto remains the seat of the caliphate irregardless.

History actually supports alaafin as the first king in Yoruba culture. Ooni as Ostrogoth highlighted was not a king in the real sense initially, he was like a chief priest. But it is also trite that a progenitor should be ahead of a political head.
This same scenario is playing out with Tinubu's case and that of the kings. He sees himself as the political leader of Yorubas which means the kings are subordinate to him.

Not exactly so sir. Oduduwa was the first leader [political and spiritual] of the Yoruba people and every Yoruba king traces his origin and authority to Oduduwa. In fact, in Yoruba mythology, it is believed that Olodumare [God, the almighty] sent Oduduwa to earth and that he landed in Ife via the aid of a chain and started life [human existence] there. This may be ridiculous and run contrariwise to the 'Adam and Even' version in the Abrahamic narration. However, it is what Yoruba mythology says and it has to be respected.

The Ooni sits directly on the throne of Oduduwa. In those days, supreme leaders [Kings] were a hybrid of king [political] and deity [spiritual].

Let's even avoid long narratives, see this: the Alaafin is referred to as 'Igbakeji orisa', to wit, the second-in-command to the deity. On the other hand, the Ooni is referred to as 'Ooni orisa' or "Ooni'risa", to wit, the deity himself. It is pretty clear sir. Well, let us not be ignorant of the fact that controversy and power go hand-in-hand, so the ego contest is not altogether unusual.

That's an ideal situation. But you know the constitution does not give them such powers and they're expected to be apolitical. Thus peeps like tinubu can relate on a stomach infrastructure level to penetrate market women, artisans and other socio-political groups. However on such a common matter like dis herdsmen issue, it seems the two foremost kings agree on the message, but do not agree on how it's being delivered. I didn't expect a letter from alaafin on the matter to be filled with such high sounding self-cognisance esp off the back of Ooni's visit to aso rock

Let me even bring in this nuance: methinks the Alaafin was only prompted to write a letter because of the visit of the Oonirisa to Aso Rock and the position accorded him. So, for the discerning minds, it is quite obvious the real import of the letter is the issue bordering on superiority -- not even the insecurity conundrum; c'mon, it is very obvious in the letter, though attempts were made to obfuscate it.

The colonial Masters [Britain] duly recognized the stool of the Ooni to be antecedent and superior to that of the Alaafin, that is why you can find allusions to 'pre-colonial head...' in the letter. History, mythology and logic does not support the Alaafin's claim to superiority. The son is never superior to the father.

Ostrogoth:

You are not right but you are not wrong either. The alaafin is the political head of the yorubas while the ooni is the spiritual head. Owu was destroyed because they waged war against Ife and traditionally, nobody, not even the mighty Oyo empire dared make war against Ife. So both are leaders just like the pope and the holy roman emperor during mediaeval Europe.

Thank you for the well intentioned retort. However, Oduduwa, the progenitor of the Yoruba race sat on the throne of Ile-Ife [the cradle of the Yoruba nation], while his sons and their descendants spread afar, founded new areas [including Oyo-Ile] and ruled. Oyo rose to prominence because it grew to become a powerful empire. Same for Ibadan [which was for a long time a domain of the Oyo Empire -- just like Ilorin was an outstation for Afonja who was Alaafin's general].

The status of Ile-Ife [the nucleus of the Yoruba people] and that of whoever sits supreme on its throne has never been in doubt. Oyo, no matter how big and influential it becomes, will always be a 'station' of the cradle -- Ile-Ife. And the father [Oduduwa, the first ruler of Ile-Ife] will always be first in time to the Son and have rule over the latter.

I am with the Alaafin on this. However, the Alaafin should quit this superiority contest with the arole Odu'a -- The Ooni. The Alaafin is not the head of the Yoruba nation, the Ooni is. To start with, in Yoruba mythology, the Ooni is considered a deity -- Orisa [not just an emperor]; so there is not really any point for comparison.

Opportune submission though.

IGNORANCE is a big problem in Nigeria. Our people have been so impoverished and stripped of information over the years.

* It is only in Nigeria that you'd hear a man say I am a Deltan [this is crass stupidity]. There is not an ethnic group known as Deltan or Niger-Deltan. Delta is an English word that means the area where a river splits into different channels whilst emptying into a bigger water body. There is also a Nile-Delta in Egypt.
*Utomi is Igbo [Anioma], whether he admits it or not.

*PHC is 70% Igboid [Ikwerre, Etche, Obigbo, Ndoki etc. are Igbo sub-groups -- no doubt].

*It is plain stupidity and crass ignorance to say Igbos are only in the SE, when in reality, the SE [which even has ethnic Igalas] only houses about 70% of Igboland. There are millions of ethnic Igbos [Igboid groups] in the areas designated as SS. Now the shocker: there a ethnic Igbos in the NC [Igbo communities in the fringes of Benue and Kogi states].

*States are a recent creation [some are even not up to 30 years old] and they are for administrative convenience. That is why there are Ijaws in Ondo state; Yoruboid 'Okun/Yagba' in Kogi state; Yoruboid 'Igbomina' etc. in Kwara [named after Kwararafa -- a non-Yoruba heritage] state; there are Ebira people in Nassarawa and Edo states; Tiv people in Taraba state; Igala in Anambra state; etc. A lot of examples.

* Let us start beating it into our people that Lagos, Cross-River, Rivers, Delta, Niger-delta, SE, SS, MB, Port Harcourt [Igwuocha], Plateau are all non-native, non-ethnic expressions. You may be a Lagosian, Deltan, Niger-deltan, Riversman, Cross-riverian etc., but please note that it is ONLY by virtue of geographical location, IT IS NOT AN ETHNIC IDENTIFICATION [they are English and Portuguese words and coinnage]. You are either from any of the Ijoid, Igboid, Edoid and almost a hundred more groups that are native to the area now referred to as SS, ND or Mid-Western etc.
DON'T BE A FOOL AND A COLONIAL SLAVE AGAIN!

We are not just poor and impoverished, we are also plain uninformed.

she should have done that herself. Nuclear weapon is the only thing that gives Israel the edge. Do you know Iran won't fight alone if war should start today? Let war break out Israel would battle different front from Iran revo guard to Hezbollah, houthis and other Iran shia militias. In terms of Land mass Israel has a relatively small land mass Iran's ballistic missiles can hit any angle in Israel.

Infact Iran does not need Nuclear weapons to neutralise Israel. Israel have ballistic missiles too but if these countries should start exchanging ballistic missiles with conventional payloads Israel would have more to lose cause of her small size

I'm not saying Israel is not powerful but you people are ignorant of Iran's military might

The Jericho III missile system is far more capable [in range, payload and precision] than anything Iran has. Iran's stock of ballistic missiles is of Soviet vintage. Israel possesses one of the most formidable missile defense systems deployed anywhere globally -- the Iron dome. Iran does not have an equivalent system.

In its strike arsenal, the IAF has some of the most advance aircrafts anywhere: F35, F15, F16 and a host of others; while the most capable strike plane in Iran's inventory is the F14 Tomcat [a plane that debuted about 4 decades ago]. The MiG 29 is shortlegged [an interceptor].

Israel can deliver nuclear warheads via a tripod of modified fighter-jets, ICBMs and a modified Dolphin class submarine supplied by Germany.

In all, Israel and Iran are very, very unequally matched. This is a fact. The U.S. is Israel's strategic ally, just like it is to Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

Isnt Osinbajo the head RUGA? Its obviously a christian initiative. Only fooools like you will switch fulani and muslims but wont switch igbos and chrsitians

The reason why there are thousands of churches up North is because there are tens of millions of indeginous Christians in the North [from Benue to Kano, Sokoto to Maiduguri] -- there are millions of Christians in Kaduna state alone.

The Southeast is the most religiously homogeneous region in Nigeria. It is many times easier to find an Hausa Christian than to find an Igbo Moslem. Commonsensically, there won't be many mosques within such a region. Igbos are proud, loud and opinionated, but Igbos are not known to visit mortal violence on non-igbos [except in very rare cases -- reprisals and all that]. The Hausas and Yorubas fight almost annually in Lagos alone, you won't find such in the East [save the IPOB incident and reprisals for riots up North]. This is fact.

P.S.: Iran is not even as strong as Egypt [forget about nukes, South Africa had and gave it up]. Whereas, Israel had been dealing with Egypt ceaselessly until the Camp David Accord. Pakistan [the strongest Moslem nation] is the only Moslem nation that can threaten Israel in some way, though Israel is more advance that Pakistan is. Israel had rendered technological assistance to India a couple of times, and India has always been Pakistan's nemesis.

Of course America can cripple the Iranian military in a conventional war. But if you think the Iranians won't resort to Asymmetric warfare, then you're in for a shocker. Besides, Iran is a far larger with a far harsher terrain compared to the Iraqi flatlands. Setting up a logistics line will equally be very difficult. Keep in mind the Iranians will be fighting in their home turf, and they will fight dirty. I don't really see America coming out on top if a war breaks out.

Of course, no war is easy war (except those from the pages of the Holy Bible). Iran is no match for America irrespective of the metric considered or means resorted to. It is an impossible situation. The best plane in Iranian inventory (aside the Russian made MiG 29) is the F-14 Tomcat, a plane that debuted fifty (50) solid years ago. Need I add that it is an American plane supplied to Iran during the good old days of the Shars. America spends more than the rest of the world combined on defence -- it is an inconceivable situation.

Iran would fight dirty; it would attack American bases within reach; it would mine the waters around the strait of Hormuz, impeding the traffic for about a fifth of the world's supply of hydrocarbon; it would use proxies BUT it would be beaten SOUNDLY.

A single USN battle group (cruisers, destroyers, nuclear submarines, aircraft carriers -- with their flight of F-35s and F-18s -- and supply ships) would effectively blockade Iran and create a deadly envelope for Iranian fighter planes.

How would Iranian soviet-copy frigates and attack submarines hold against a USN that boasts of 20 aircraft carriers (more than the entire worldwide fleet), several destroyers, cruisers and a class of nuclear submarines that can literally sit underwater for several years (till food supply runs out) and fire at anywhere on the globe! C'mon.

It would be at a cost but it is a NO CONTEST.

Olodo. How many American soldiers lost their lives in ordinary Iraq?

Why did you insult me when I never even referenced you in my post? You have to know the difference between a strike and an occupation war. America lost soldiers (though highly disproportionately compared to the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi soldiers and fighters that died) in Iraq because it waged an occupation war; it fought not to completely cripple the country, but to topple the government of Saddam Hussein, run the country till its stable enough to elect an American stooge. The scenario in Iran would be the strike option which is far easier.

Asssymetric war would always be life-intensive. Even in Niger Republic, the USM has lost soldiers against ISIS-affiliated groups. So don't get it twisted. If an all-out war erupted today, Iran does not even have missiles with enough reach and accuracy to target the American homeland. Don't forget the U.S. owns the GPS (Russia owns Glonass) and they can simply switch it off.

P.S.: Iraq under Hussein was not 'ordinary', it had the fourth largest armoured-force then. It was slightly superior compared to Iran. They fought for years, and Iran was the underdog.

The U.S. Military can cripple Iran in days. C'mon, the technological gap is too wide. The only nation that can stand America toe-to-to is Russia -- and that would even be if America attacked the Russian homeland (with Russia fighting defensively).

To those that think otherwise: if Iran squared up against Israel, it would be doing so at a substantial disadvantage. Pakistan, the strongest Moslem nation -- not Egypt, Turkey nor Saudi Arabia, should be a more suitable adversary for Israel. And even at that, Israel is miles ahead of Pakistan in technology. They are both nuclear-armed, however, Israel has second strike capability i.e. if you nuked the whole of Israel today and wiped it off, it has ballistic missile submarines underwater primed to fire nuclear-tipped Jericho missiles on targets 5,000 miles away -- it would retaliate.

Nigeria poor Nigeria poor some people still dey buy private jet.
So because Nigeria is poor, the president should ride in a cheap car. Oga go rest abeg

Listen to correction so you don't perish in your folly! America budgets about $700bn on just defence every year; it has spent over $1.5trn on a single weapon system -- the F 35 aircraft. Our whole budget in Nigeria is about $40 - $50bn annually; so if America splurges $2m on her presidential state car, it means a certain Buhari, of a hungry and limping Nigeria, has to go spend almost $600K on a not-so-special benz?

I won't give you further audience.

Donald Trump's beast cost 5.7b Naira and people here are shouting class!

Buhari's Mercedes Maybach was rumoured to be above 200 million Naira and the same people complained that he's wasteful

Double standard?

You have to be kidding! You can afford that when you sit on the world's biggest economy and have got majority of your citizens living the life 70% of the world population can only dream of.

Can same be said of a certain Nigeria where almost 130Million people (if this was a country on its own, it would still be among the most populous -- definitely still the number one in Africa) live in squalor and mystery?

Are we not unfortunate enough? Do we still need to suffer simple-minds amidst us?

Now this his how a self-respecting and cultured man would greet another in an official capacity with respect to the weight of the offices they bear. A class act. Oviedo Omo-Agege should see this, learn from it and put an end to his buffoonery.
