Buy the E60, there's no 350i of the e60. It is 550i. Buy the 530i. You are good to go. As for the Camry, the gear would pack up. And robbers can make it disappear
how ironic, the Camry gear "would pack up" but the troublesome and fault prone E60 would be perfectly Ok

what a genius you are

Car TalkRe: Which Model Of 2002-2005 Toyota Highlander Is Better? by Fentanyl: 9:29am On Apr 17, 2020
NaijadrivaCars:
A friend wants to buy the SUV but he learnt the motor consumes oil. I advised him to get 2005 model just because of the upgrades (JBL premium sound etc) but I don't know about the engine. He is considering 4 cylinder(harder to find as we see more of 3.3L 6cylinder) or 6 cylinder but Is the 4 cylinder engine any good?

Please help him to make an informed decision. He will be reading this post as a guest.

nurey
gazzuz et al
like you mentioned there are 2 options for the Highlander, the 4 cylinder 2AZ engine which was used in many 4 cylinder toyota models between 2000 and 2010, yes the 2AZ engine had a well documented engine oil shortage problem due to a design error which toyota admitted

the extent of the oil burning depends on the history and maintenance, some have worse symptoms than others

specific to the Highlander, the first american generation was in two categories, 2001 - 2003 and then 2004 - 2007

all of them used the same 2AZ 4 cylinder engine, frankly I think it's a disservice to yourself to buy a 4 cylinder Highlander all in the name of fuel economy, it is very underpowered and underwhelming

for the V6, 2001 - 2003 used the 3l 1MZ engine which was prone to oil sludge while 2004 - 2007 used the updated 3.3l 3MZ with better power, better fuel economy and less oil sludge problems

also the 2001 - 2003 used the 4 speed transmission while the 2004 - 2007 used the newer U151E 5 speed AT

if your friend wants the best, let him go for the 2005 - 2007 Limited 4WD with leather interior and premium interior options

the 4WD is optional, may not be necessary if the ride would be a city terrain crawler, the FWD versions have slightly better fuel economy so you'd have to decide which is more important to you

Ikenna351:
Yet people are blind and quick to condemn Peugeot vehicles as problematic, ignoring the fact that Nigerians do terrible things on their modern vehicles, not just Peugeots, and they quickly blame the brand or vehicle as the cause. This thread is just one of those that have proven even Nigerian Toyota users go through same headaches Nigerian Peugeot users experience when they mess up their vehicle systems.

Based on symptom you described, if it was Peugeot, I wouldn't bother much with scan, for it may help in a case like this (not saying scanning shouldn't be done). Physical elimination or rule out will be my be focus by checking:

- Vacuum leak.

- Engine wiring connections.

- CTS.

- Cylinder reference sensor or synchronization with CKP sensor (Timing).

- Condition of Injection ECU.

Something is making ECU to lean out or inject excess fuel in combustion chambers at high engine temperature, which is why it starts at cold temperature, but hard/non start at high. Ruling out the listed above will narrow the culprit (even though it could be elsewhere)

Since, you know nothing about cars, it's not something mere scan tool or guess work will detect. That car needs someone that understands how Toyota injection systems work to physically diagnose the car beyond scan tool. I am not that person. Find him or her. And stop wasting your time online trying to find opinions that could waste more money for you.

For those suggesting fuel pump/fuel pressure could be the issue, an EFI car engine that can run for hours without stalling but refuses to start immediately has nothing to do with fuel pressure or pump. For those suggesting starter issue, the symptom described didn't indicate crank issue at hot engine temperature. As for immobilizer suggestion, I have never seen immobilizer that chooses to activate only when engine is hot when faulty, as if it works with engine coolant and oil temperatures. To understand how modern car systems work, focus or spend more time on practical on Vehicles than online opinions. In some cases, they are two different worlds.

Bigade:
I want to get a car because I do travel alot for my business, I short distance though, from Lagos to Ijebu Ode, Ijebu Ode to Ibadan, like so on. I am thinking of getting a car for smooth movement, and likewise I can be carrying passenger along with me for the cost of fuel. And as well planning to venture into raw food business using the car to carry the goods from buying point to selling point.

So my question is, which one should I go for in either Sienna first generation (1998 to 2003) or Camry (1999-2001).

I am looking at buying Nigeria used but car are of the same price in Lagos right now. But am thinking of will the Sienna wouldn't be giving me issue, because I can hear some people saying the Sienna do give issue.

Please I want people that has first hand information on both vehicles to enlighten me, the people that have used it or mechanics that deals with it.

I am looking forward for a great advice. Thanks
get the Sienna, those earlier V6s were prone to oil sludge so be sure to maintain the engine appropriately and you would be fine

nurey owns one of them, seek his opinion

All Toyotas are bland and uninspiring

coming from a notorious benz or nothing blockhead, one cannot be surprised

let's try a different approach this time, one based on facts and rational thought

lets compare vehicles in the same category, MPVs

the Toyota Sienna VS the W251 R class

lifespan and appeal

The Sienna has been produced by Toyota since 1997 after the Previa, and has had consistently strong sales and value every year it has been on the market

The R class benz was manufactured from 2007 until 2012 in north America when mercedes had to cancel it for very poor sales and limited appeal

The R63 AMG bears special mention, but unfortunately even it was cancelled after a single year, 2007, because it was very poorly built and handled like a toy with predictably very low sales

reliability

the Sienna is a toyota and of course has the toyota mark of reliability for all 3 generations so far, of course it's a moving vehicle so there would always be issues, but none which would ground the van or needing expensive repairs

the R class, well I will leave that to your imagination

power and fuel economy

Sienna

3l V6 till 2004 or so, 3.3l V6 till 2007 or so, 3.5l V6 from 2007 till 2020, future models will be strictly hybrid EVs

R class

3l V6, 3.5l V6, 5l V8, 5.5l V8, 6.2l V8

and someone says the Sienna fuel economy is poor

I could go on and on, but you will find that in all the useful categories, the humble Sienna will beat out the equivalent Mercedes over and over

this also applies to many other classes of cars

the glory days of Mercedes are long gone, if you like you can keep living in the past and engaging in self deception like the other benz or nothing airheads, I would not be surprised
