10. Three Gorges Dam, China.

Capacity: 22,500 MW.

Construction began December 14, 1994

Opening date 2008

Construction cost: ¥180 billion (US$26 billion).

Three Gorges Dam, one of the most expensive and powerful hydroelectric project ever built.

I recall someone embezzling over $16B to buy us darkness. . . angry

Sile12:
1. The Marina Bay Sands Resort. $8Billion.
A resort located in Singapore. It was developed by Las Vegas Sands and it’s the world’s most expensive standalone casino property. The cost of the whole project was $8 billion. The resort includes, besides the casino, a hotel with 2,561 rooms, 1,300,000-square-foot convention and exhibition center, an 800,000-square foot mall, a museum, two theatres, 7 celebrity chef restaurants, an ice-skating ring and, of course, the world’s largest atrium casino that has 500 tables and 1,600 slot machines.
Seriously, is this the same country Nigeria got her independence before her? Sad that we are still stuck here trying to achieve constant power supply and fighting ourselves. . .

Civil and Structural Engineering taken to the extreme. . . Waiting for when Japan's Shimizu mega city pyramid will become reality. . .
Science/TechnologyRe: What If We Had Two Moons by Feraz(m): 7:28am On Jun 03, 2015
5minsmadness:
@johnnydon,
Seriously man, there are solar systems with two suns and planets moving on a rotational orbit around both. A good example is the kepler-47 solar system consisting of a young and an old Sun and two planets.

Such solar systems may not be habitable for carbon based life-forms but maybe silica-based? It would be fun to find out.

@op,
Two moons huh? Possible. Would make for a beautiful night sky. The second moon may not be of considerable mass though so as not to affect life on earth. It is totally possible for the earth to steal a passing asteroid in the future millenia to come. It would have to be slightly smaller than the moon and be moving at a relatively slow rate through space. It might even contain relics of alien life...

It would be wonderful to explore.
I never knew you to be interested in stuff like these. . .though always enjoy your contributions in the family section. . .

Allow me to present to you the Gustav Gun . The largest gun ever built.

When Hitler needed to break the French Maignot line (a concrete fortified barrier holding him from Western Europe) he had his engineers build this 4-story beast. It was 20 feet wide, 140 feet long, weighed a massive 1344 tons & required a 500 man crew.

It could fire a 7 tonne shell and hit a target 30 miles away.
shocked shocked

This is one big gun. . .

I'm having mixed feelings over these marvellous pieces of forward thinking.

On the one hand, I appreciate them and the folks who thought them through. On the other hand, I'm so saddened as to why we're so left behind. Something is wrong somewhere!

We have the same brain cells with these White folks. We were ably created by the same God ( leave the atheists alone). We have all it takes to achieve these technological fits.

We can't overemphasise the role science and technology plays in the standard of living of a people.

Miserable Africa! We're yet to fix even the most basic needs of our people.

Where did we get it wrong?

I guess it's not too late.
We got it wrong the moment Nigeria discovered oil and decided to let her industries die

We got it wrong the moment we decided to make the petroleum sector more lucrative

We got it wrong the moment Nigeria decided to ignore the talents we had during the civil war instead of absorbing them like Americans did to the Germans

We got it wrong when our leaders (executive and legislative) decided to start sending their kids outside the country instead of passing bills that will make the educational sector grow despite most attending schools for free.

We got it wrong the moment we abandoned the vocational sector.

We got it wrong the moment we decided to worship those with questionable source of wealth and ignore those adding meaning to our lives. . .

There are peeps interested in things like these. . .

What I think about two moons? Like people have said - increase in tidal waves, changes in behaviours of animals linked to the lunar cycle maybe twice the way they behave having one moon and then maybe a second chance for Nigeria to get her act right and be the first to visit the second moon. . . grin

Science/TechnologyRe: Nuclear Power As An Alternative Source Of Energy by Feraz(m): 6:55pm On Jun 02, 2015
This is a comment I made on this thread concerning nuclear power plant

There is no time we are ever gonna be ripe for such investment knowing the country we belong to. While Nigeria lacks that maintenance culture, it is time the govt takes it serious to invest in sections of Engineering such as Maintenance Engineering starting now so that we become used to it before the nuclear power plant is constructed in 2035. Try with the 'little' we have such as roads, existing thermal power and hydro power stations, existing facilities till the Nigerian populace is satisfied with the way we handle things. We can't keep depending on foreigners to help us maintain our facilities.

Then again, the govt has to embark on an awareness campaign highlighting the pros and cons of such plant. I mean, we wouldn't want hoodlums sneaking in to 'steal' a component or community people trying to shut down the plant with violence simply because it is located around their community, teaching them that this is different from the normal gas plants they normally sabotage the pipes supplying the plants and honestly, I think we need to run the media campaign for more than four years till the message sinks in.

ibolomo:
it's their own version of the "die in the lagoon" statement. And how is this racist in any way? By the way, if we don't ridicule ourselves, others can't ridicule us. When we as a race see ourselves as inferior, then they treat us as an inferior race.

Dare I say that Africa is the most blessed continent in the world? Other nations see us as a threat. Our children that go to their schools, for instance, in the US, top their classes. The reason? God has specially deposited in us what we ourselves don't see. This is what makes other races feel insecure and fight to make us remain primitive and lack development, part of which is also our fault. They incite violence in our nations because a Nation in flames cannot develop and compete favourably among other nations. God help Africa, also, Africans, help yourselves... #IRESTMYCASE
We are blessed? How have we turned that blessing into help for the world at large? Who the blessing don help? If we are united and trust ourselves, will any 'outsider' incite violence? Look at what is happening in your country and the killings, kidnapping and other vices going on, how far have we gone with solving issues like these?

There is no race more useless, more weak, more foolish, more cowardly and more ignorant than the Black Race.
Brother easy oh abeg! During this migration crisis, I asked myself - where did we get it wrong? Seeing how those guys are shown daily on TV (even Italians are tired of them) worries me. I mean, why are African leaders like this? Whatever did the followers do to deserve this? People running away from Somalia, Libya etc; it is sad to say the least.

Until we change our mentality and determine in moving this continent forward, we may sadly be stuck begging others to accomodate us in their continent.

Manny, no need arguing with some folks on here, as far as Its about APC, they are always right. if you still believe in the country Nigeria, pray for her ; many have been bewitched better still hypnotized with propaganda.

Its a pity.
This bitterness and hatred will set this country ablaze One day.
Honestly, I just tire for Nigerians. As much as I dislike GEJ, he tolerated the press and despite all said against him, he never used his powers to close any of them. It is surprising to see people hailing this. I just hope they do not come back to cry foul when the stations left portray the incoming administration as a saint.
