Chommieblaq:
The moon was just shining very bright in kano n I stayed awake till 3am.
You mean you didn't see anything in Kano? How come I snapped this? From Wudil... This was at about 3:15am. Stayed awake watching this until 3:50am before going to bed. Woke up at intervals from then on to watch the eclipse clear.

It's happening right now.

Can you take a pic... It's already total here and I saw no red
I hope you can manage this. My phone's camera isn't that powerful despite using the night settings.

Science/TechnologyRe: Open Thread For People Waiting For The Lunar Eclipse by Feraz(m): 3:17am On Sep 28, 2015
I'm gently watching the moon from Kano state here. It's red in colour with a little part still showing the real colour of reflected light due to it not being total as at now. It's real people. Very red... Very very red.

Through astrology. . They observed the stars, constellations, movement of the sun and moon in the sky, the positions of these celestial bodies.

Ancient sumerians were the first to divide the day into seconds, minutes and hours..

For us in Nigeria we bleeped for real because this shiit is happening when we need sleep most..

Begins: Mon, Sep 28, 2015 at 1:11 AM
Maximum: Mon, Sep 28, 2015 at 3:47 AM
Ends: Mon, Sep 28, 2015 at 6:22 AM

I give it to those guys. They were good and accurate with their predictions.

Chisoosss! You mean from 1am till about 6am? I must see this winshy moon today and snap if possible
I think it's best you set your alarm at 3:15am; so before 3:47am, you're fully awake to take enough pictures of the event. Set mine to 3:00am though, may soon adjust it.

Please, let's share pictures here. Here in Kano, the sky is still clear and I'm hoping it doesn't rain cos most friends Whatsapping me are complaining of the downpour.

johnydon22:

We Nigerians needs to pay more mind on science bro, the world is leaving Africa behind in terms of Scientific knowledge.

Imagine when Africans here of astronomical phenomenons like Lunar eclipse they shout "end time things" without even knowing what and how lunar eclipses occur, its really a pity if you ask me.

So we always have to do our best to bring science no matter how basic our knowledge of it is to African minds because the grip of superstition on the minds of people in African is heart breaking..

Anyway for people who might be wondering how and what causes a Lunar eclipse. .

You might want to look this video up, its very basic and simple. .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49O2MsT1txU&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Though we may not be there yet, but people are beginning to get conscious of science - Well, that's what I think. That aside, ever wonder how the ancients were able to predict phenomena such as this and many other accurately?

Modified: according to BBC, this excerpt was gotten from their website
The eclipse will begin at 02:11 GMT,
when the Moon enters the lightest part
of the Earth's shadow, known as the
penumbra, and adopts a yellowish
colour. At 04:11, the Moon completely enters the umbra - the inner dark
corpus of our planet's shadow.
The point of greatest eclipse occurs at
04:47, when the Moon is closest to the
centre of the umbra. The show will be
over by 06:22 in the morning on Monday
If they are correct, all we need do is to add one hour to our time.

Please what time should we be expecting this in Nigeria exactly? I'd try keep awake
8:11 EDT is about 4 hours behind GMT and since we're an hour ahead of GMT, I'll say 1:11am tomorrow morning will it start, then peak at 3:47am if my calculations are correct.

Brace up people, Uchiha Madara is about to start off his mugen tsukuyomi. grin

Topic, I set off my alarm for 1:30am so I'll be sure it has started before coming outside to view it. Unfortunately, I can't snap it as my phone isn't powerful enough. BTW people, NASA organised a photo competition for this rare event so y'all may be interested in it. Science/TechnologyRe: You Can Get Cautiously Excited About This Fusion Power "Breakthrough" by Feraz(m): 7:49pm On Aug 14, 2015
Blakjewelry:
I thought they are still looking for funds to further the project?
Really? I never heard about them looking for fund. Of course, it had to be on the principles of the tokamak - what the ITER works with also. The good thing about science and engineering is that it seeks to improve existing design to give a much smaller but more powerful output as can be seen with this breakthrough. Teempakguy, this is another breakthrough in fusion power.
Seems fusion energy is the future now. Yeah! Which movie did I first see the power of the sun being demonstrated? Spiderman 2, the one with Toby Macguire.

Then again, it's not only in this ARC reactor that they made a breakthrough; they also made another in creating a superfluid gas - the so called Bose-Einstein condensate. https://newsoffice.mit.edu/2015/new-look-at-superfluidity-0810

Notice the people who funded the research at the end of the above link, same with this thread. Please, Nigeria, start funding research organisations so that we shall not be left behind.
Science/TechnologyRe: US Generates 66 Gigawatts From Wind Energy. by Feraz(m): 9:44am On Aug 12, 2015
Hahaha! And Nigeria is where? Check the US Dept. Of Energy website and that of Nigeria and see the difference; they currently have researches on various energy means going on while ours is only promises.

The only issue I have with wind turbines is the problem of killing of birds. I'm surprised it's up to 66GW just from wind prolly thanks to the numerous wind farms. Should Nigeria incorporate this, I wonder if we can build offshore wind farms because if I'm not mistaken, wind is much offshore compared to onshore.

The gbajamila guy happens to be one out of about six people who has any business in the House of Representatives. Most of the rest have no business and are unfit to represent a herd of cattle . The other being , Abike Dabiri , the northern guy who grilled iweala and one guy from the SE who seems to be on top of the issues .
Do you mean Hon. Jibril or so? BTW, that guy did not put up the questions that drilled Iweala; it was a Southerner who was paid about N100m to prepare 50 questions and another amount to check the facts after Iweala brings the answers to them written. Bottom line, they are incompetent.

Yeah. . . Pluto is considered a dwarf planet, same with Eris; so therefore, there are 8 main planets FOR NOW and 5 dwarf planets.

Johnydon22, just checked your profile. You play basketball? Interesting.

Science/TechnologyRe: How Many Planets Are There In The Solar System? by Feraz(m): 10:37pm On Aug 05, 2015
You know eh, when I found out about Pluto not being a planet, I recall being in conflict with some children I was teaching if I should make them know Pluto is not one anymore or continue with what their textbooks say because most curriculum haven't been updated to reflect that.

Then again, I keep wondering why Eris wasn't found before Pluto cos if I remember correctly, it was after Eris was discovered that they decided to rule out Pluto.

Well, no one should come here condemning Russia. If we appreciated ourselves better, I don't think this would have been made. Besides, it doesn't take time compared to the bleaching cream some rub for months before seeing results. So for all you self-hating dark complexioned humans, this is a better solution than the bleaching cream you patronise. grin

So that you can disturb and pollute Islamic threads with your meaningless and pointless posts right? My question for you, why is it that Muslims preach openly with microphones while christians preach quietly without letting anyone to know what you guys are saying. Oga
Seun come and give this thread and the op the necessary action
So to preach openly is now something good, not minding if you're disturbing your neighbour? Pray tell, aren't there designated places where those who practise their faith are supposed to worship?

How come most people here confuse y'all for Igbos? How come those from Asaba, some Ikas and some Ukwani people say they are Igbos? What about the Ikwerres - you bear Igbo names and have similar language but claim you aren't Igbos? Please, simply answer this question for me: why do other parts/sections of the country confuse y'all for Igbos? The same cannot be said of the Efik, Annang, Ibibio, Ijaws (I'm not saying they're Igbos oh before someone says I'm laying claim to a people knowing how Nairaland is) etc but the Ikas, Ikwerres and Aniomas. Bear in mind that the Igbos do not force their identity on the above but the above keep denying it. Why is that?

PabloAfricanus, I want to make reference to a post you made about Ojukwu not including Delta state in Biafra. Please, where did you get the information from? Does it mean over the years, we have been fed lies about him wanting to take Delta state? Thanks.

The owner is an agnostic. While I do not agree with the whole ish of them having their section, you should see reasons with the owner. Something happened some years ago that prompted the owner to create that section that stands today. If I remember correctly, I think he was threatened.

Is either Nairaland is now a forum of Nigerian Chaff minds or Kids. In that case, this forum its gradually losing what made it popular.

Back then, we would have seen strong analogies from Nigerians home and Abroad, but today all u see when an importantt topic llike this come up is dafts booking space they will never use, or saying nonsense or out of topic.

Now the truth is that, for Nigeria to develop, 2 things must be done, if not we are just wasting our time. Buhari can't do any magic. By 2019, every thing will even be worst, Unless this 2 things are done.

1. true federalism, states with natural reourses, can develop their resourses and send certain % of fund to federal..... yl other resources shared with different %.
2. Economic power must go to States and/or regions and Autonomous LGA's while federal Govt should retain, military, police for now, CBN, Foriegn affairs. some tetiarry institutions and tetiary Hospitals as symbols of our National pride,

With this, in 10yrs, the story of Nigeria will be a proud one.
The bolded, very apt. I miss the Nairaland of old where I'll learn a thing or two from the topic. People like manny4life and others having healthy arguments with other economists on this forum.

Amazing how carbon holds so many positive. The hardest and lightest substance both come from carbon; Japan's Shimizu's mega city pyramid structures are to be made from carbon - carbon nanotubes and are to be self-replicating; and now, light. How much more can we get from this substance carbon?

And you chose to compare the robot to Our Lord Jesus, eh kwah?
Unu abia kwa!!!

BTW, why do people say Jesus is the only one to walk on water? Does his disciple - Simon Peter not deserve the praise also albeit it was short?

On a light note: Flash and Superman performed the same feat though they both ran...tongue

As they made mention of a robotic insect that walks on water, my mind went straight to water strider; of course, it has to be on the principles of the insect. What's the name of that Jackie Chan movie again? Yeah - The Tuxedo; the first place I heard of the insect.
