With regards to the symbol that was the symbol Moses used in the bible when God sent snakes among the children of Israel. the snake on the stick that God said any one that looks on the snake shall ne healed. Politics / Levy For Governor’s Perfume: Rivers Women Protest by feyiona(m): 9:01am On Feb 24, 2016
HUNDREDS of women from Mile Three Market in Diobu, Port Harcourt marched to the Government House in Port Harcourt in protest against an alleged multiple taxation, which includes a tax for governor’s perfume.

The women, who chanted war songs, caused a gridlock around Azikiwe Road as they asked the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, to caution the Port Harcourt City Local Government Council Chairman, Mr. Sunny Sam-Ejekwu.

The market women lamented that the extortion from a group suspected to be a task force established by the council was impoverishing them.

Although the women’s protest was peaceful, their placards, which read, ‘We no go gree’, Pay-pay too much’, ‘Stop collecting Chairman’s money from us’, and Save us from extortion and intimidation’, among others, conveyed their anger.

One of the protesting market women, who identified herself as Gift, expressed anger that the leader of the task force had been collecting various illegal levies from them.

Gift said, “Each of us pays levies ranging from N1, 500 to N4, 000. The one that is annoying us and forced us to embark on this protest is the N2, 000 for ‘Governor’s perfume’. They said the money would be used to purchase perfume for the governor.

“The task force constituted by the government is using their position as to intimidate us and extort money from us. They charge us money unnecessarily. They coin name for each of the money they want to take from us.

“Sometimes we don’t sell anything, but they will ensure that we pay more than 1,000 naira daily. We don’t make much in our trade, but our small gains go into the government’s pocket.”

She expressed the need for government to appoint a chairman for the market, adding that such a leader will be able to protect market women from the incessant harassment and extortion from task force members.

“We don’t have a chairman in charge of the Mile 3 Market. If there is a chairman, we can take our grievances to him. I sell fish. When these task force people come, they throw my fish away and force me to pay N2,000,” Gift further lamented.

Speaking in his office, the Chairman of the Port Harcourt City Council, Mr. Sunny Sam-Ejekwu, said he was not aware of any extortion in Mile 3 market.

Sam-Ejekwu described the allegation of intimidation and extortion by the market women as blackmail and added that the claims by the market women were politically motivated.

When reached, the Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area of Rivers State, Mr. Sunny Sam-Ejekwu denied knowledge of the said extortion and intimidations.

He, however, promised to investigate the matter to find out the actual reason behind the market women’s protest at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

When contacted, the state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Austin Tam-George, said there was no such levy for the governor’s perfume.

Tam-George added that the state Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, had ordered the arrest of fake task force members, who specialised in extorting money from traders.

Politics / BREAKING: Gulak Declares Self PDP Chairman by feyiona(m): 4:22pm On Jan 27, 2016
Olusola Fabiyi, Abuja

Former Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Political Matters, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, on Wednesday pronounced himself the substantive chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Gulak made the pronouncement inside the National Working Committee Hall at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

He spoke in company with his loyalists, which included former Special Assistant to ex-president, Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe and a former Commissioner in Bayelsa State, Chief Ayakeme Whisky.

Gulak said he decided to take over the leadership of the party following the court order of December 16, 2015, which asked the party to name someone from the North-East to replace the former chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu.

Gulak told the cheering crowd, which included workers at the secretariat, that the NWC must work with him in order to move the party forward.

Details later.

Politics / BREAKING: Court Strikes Out All Cases Challenging Kogi Poll, Supplementary Elect by feyiona(m): 1:31pm On Dec 04, 2015
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has struck out all four cases instituted before it in respect of the November 21 governorship election in Kogi state.

Justice Gabriel Kolawole, who delivered judgment on the consolidated four cases said the Federal High Court had no jurisdiction to entertain all the reliefs sought by the various parties.

He said passing judgment on the reliefs would mean usurping the powers of the governorship election tribunal that would be constituted by the President of the Court of Appeal after the supplementary election fixed for Saturday has been held.

Mr. Kolawole said the court affirms that INEC has he power to conduct the November 21 election and the supplementary one to hold on Saturday

Politics / Fielding Jonathan For Presidential Poll An Error – PDP by feyiona(m): 8:18am On Nov 11, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party has asked Nigerians to forgive the party for its inability to meet their yearnings in the past 16 years.

The party also said that fielding former President Goodluck Jonathan as the PDP candidate for the 2015 Presidential election was an error. It added that the party was aware that Nigerians were angry with it because of some actions it took when it was in power.

The PDP said it was ready to mend fences and this was why it was organising a national conference where all issues affecting the former ruling party would be discussed.

The Chairman, National Planning Committee of the conference, Dr. Raymond Dokpesi, said this at a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday.

Dokpesi, a chieftain of the party from Edo State, was flanked at the briefing by members of the planning committee of the conference.

The defeat of the party in the last general election came to its leaders as a surprise.

Apart from losing the Presidency to the All Progressives Congress, the PDP also lost in some states where it was hitherto popular.

Dokpesi attributed the defeat to many errors committed by the party and its leadership, but asked Nigerians “to forgive and forget.”

He said, “We are aware that there were errors we made. We admit that we made mistakes and we have not met the expectation of Nigerians and we tendered unreserved apologies for these mistakes.

“You must have seen the Ike Ekweremadu report on why we are apologising. There was no internal democracy. There was impunity within the party and there was no level-playing ground for members of the party.

“Zoning principles of the party were abandoned and gamuts of all other issues, which will come out during the conference and for all these and the people who have been offended; for people whose toes were stepped upon, we also tendered an unreserved apology.

“These are the reasons why we are begging and apologising. We want to assure every founding member of the party that we deviated from their visions. That is why we are going to have all our founding fathers, like Adamu Ciroma, Dr. Alex Ekwueme and other members of the G.34, to come and talk to us at the conference.

“For every and any mistake we have made, I therefore say, we tender our unreserved apologies.”

Asked if the mistake of the party included the fielding of the former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate in 2015 poll, he said it was wrong for the party to have abandoned zoning in preference for the former President.

Dokpesi said the party ought to have allowed the northern part of the country to complete its term when former President Umaru Yar’Adua died in 2010.

He said, “The party in 2010 and 2011 made the first round of mistake of not allowing the North to complete its term.

“That was when the party gave a special favour to the then President (Jonathan), who came to compete the term of Yar’Adua, to be allowed to finish just a term.

“The same small leaders of the party came forward in 2015 and refused to allow the North to field the party’s presidential candidate. They manipulated the party to do the same.”

He added that, “Make no mistake, the PDP is aware that there were errors made along the way. We admit that at certain times in our past, mistakes have been made: we did not meet the expectations of Nigerians.

“But the past is exactly what it is. While we should not forget the past and its errors, we must look forward and begin to show true leadership within and outside our party.”

He said the forthcoming conference would be used to reinvigorate, re-engineer and restructure the party, which he said, would be handed over to the youth.
