Ibegtodiffer: Your write-up void and ladden with crass ignorance. You know near to nothing about what you're saying.
1. while you are here commending, all the children of these elites are studying abroad. They shut down your own "substandard" universities & send their own kids out of the country, and you're hailing.
2. Just so you know, ghost workers is near impossible in academia. There's the need for evidence of what course, who teaches & when, monitored periodically by NUC. If it's inconsistent, you risk partial or failed accreditation. Moreover, if there were ghost Lecturers, you won't be hearing about lecturing in 2 or more universities.
3. On what ASUU has achieved, a lot. More than half the students in public universities would have been dropouts by now, if ASUU hadn't rejected the FG earlier proposed 350k to 500k school fees.
4. Just so you know, significantly over 50% of ASUU members are MSc or PhD students in Nigeria. Less than 30% of ASUU members study abroad under TETFUND. A good number worked hard enough to obtain foreign scholarships abroad. Hence not all Lecturers abroad are funded by TETFUND.
5. The said TETFUND is actually the brainchild of ASUU! so is NEEDS. All Lecture halls, Hostels, Vehicles, Chairs, Lab equipment, Books etc that has TETFUND or NEEDS ASSESSMENT crested on them are products of ASUU struggles. They went through hunger, sickness and death in some cases for these to come into fruition. Something a lot of people are unaware of. A huge number of Nigerians do not even know that TETFUND is not funded by FG!!! Do your investigation on this, since na u sabi pass.
6. What have Lecturers invented? That's the problem with FG propaganda. You want inventions in a University that is grossly underfunded. Does that add up? Australia just released 1B dollars intervention fund to universities last week. Reason is, international students were slow in paying up their fees. That is how much they value education. That is not part of the annual education budget. But Nigerian politicians would rather shutdown Universities, strangulate her intellectuals, distabilize academic calendar and frustrate the students, instead of spending 350Million dollars for a period of six years. What a stench. During this pandemic, without salaries and without FG funding, several Universities have developed Ventilators that are currently up for commercialization. Rapid diagnostic kits for COVID-19 have been developed and commercialized already. Drugs are at advanced levels in at least 2 public universities in Nigeria. ASUU does not have the financial muscle to match FG's propaganda or control the disappointing money controlled media. But it is definitely working. Unknown to Nigerians, the current ASUU strike permits members to go into research that can salvage the pandemic challenges. Who will report these developments?
7. What is Nigeria's University certificate worth abroad? This the more reason for massive funding of these institutions. Despite a limited premium on our certificates, significant number of Nigeria students perform excellently abroad. Our universities produce good students, that can compete globally, yet, their certificates are less regarded. Isn't that a significant signal, that our universities can do more with a little more funding?
8. Extended retirement of 70 age does not mean Lecturers want to die there. Recently, the Nobel price award in Chemistry was won by a 91 year old academic. It is scientifically proven that the brain cells are one of the most long lasting. Professionalism improves with years of work. Moreover, how come the retirement age of politicians doesn't worry you? Try harder next time. |

maryjames9: A Professor and Geologist has this to say as a comment about FG-ASUU saga___
Even in ASUU, this is the worst leadership I have seen in 25years in the university. Both government and ASUU are not sincere on university education in Nigeria. I have not seen any intellectualism in the attitude of both government and ASUU. I will touch little things that doesn't make sense; why is ASUU on strike now? It is because of IPPIS and after losing out on that they shifted the goalpost to "revitalization of universities" which is very unrealistic. Why would a sensible person declare strike during coronavirus global confusion? Where is the much acclaimed knowledge? This strike was never voted for at individual branches as usual but truncated by the ASUU NEC. It never happened this way before. The IPPIS unveiled an unbelievable number of ghost workers in the university payroll whole the former gifmis payroll that ASUU preferred accommodated all those ghost workers. So the complain about IPPIS is baseless and unfounded. Why would a professor be allow to visit more than two universities in a month? How would he cover the contact hours and quality delivery to students if he has to visit three, four, five and etc universities? All for money. Who are then killing the university education from within? Why would this malpractice be allow simply because it is ASUU. Respect should be earn through honesty. What is revitalization? Who will source over N1 trillion naira and throw it to universities for unspecified projects and look the other way? This will never happen. How many universities judiciously utilized the money given by President Goodluck Jonathan for Needs Assessment Projects? Infact you will see better projects in State Universities than federal universities. Why is ASUU silent about this? Who actually benefits from major projects? University Management and Union officials as supervisors but not lecturers. TETFUND is doing good in their intervention projects in all universities, so why this revitalization again? Why is ASUU drifting away from sourcing welfare of its members and targeting revitalization? Are they fighting for its members of universities management? As it is now, majority of ASUU member have gone to Abuja and enrolled for the IPPIS because the deception is too much. No government in the history of Nigeria is interested in education, so only sincerity of purpose, honesty and transparency in side of ASUU would defeat them and not stupid pride and propaganda. If Nigerian Universities are winning research grants and do the research, they would have solve their problems and earn more respect. Does it take new laboratory or office to put up an application for a good research? If ASUU had being encouraging good research, things would not have being this bad. You cannot help a politicians to rig elections and expect them to respect you.

kenpaul0: A partnership with SA would do Nigeria (And Africa) a whole lot of good. If i was President i would pursue for this....Even their attack chopper i would offer partnership with them No way. We will never do that. Tomorrow, they would tell us that they gave us weapons technology. Go online and see the hate their people have for Nigeria. Them SA people would go to extreme lengths to undo Nigeria because they want to be Giant of Africa. They never admit our help during the dark arpatheid days. Especially the uneducated ones. Please, we should NOT ever partner with SA. I would have ignored if not for the visitors reading this thread. We should partner with China or Russia. They would help us if we ask. Not SA please. |

dragon2: I agree 1000%. The MOD should set aside a percentage of budget for missiles tech, maybe work with South Africa. Getting a seeker head will allow us develop local, air to air, air to ground, surface to surface and anti ship missiles. The reduced costs will allow more frequent exercises in weapons deployment by the three arms. Also,a swarm of SDB3/4 with local made anti ship missiles would be a last line of independent defence at sea. Propulsion is partially done,we really need seeker heads. We are almost there bro. Work on Inertial Guidance & Control of rockets is ongoing. That is the challenging part. Once we fix that, Naija made missiles are almost ready. |

kabe1: The problem of purchasing Russian weaponry in this trump administration is that Nigeria might fall victim to CAATSA sanctions. This is the reason we have not received our 7 remaining MI-35M helicopters.
We can only realistically purchase top of the line Russian weaponry if we get guarantees from the US that we would not be sanctioned.
Turkish weapons, Turkish drones are filled with imported Western components. Intact Canada has stopped exporting parts for Turkish drones, Turkey cannot deliver T-129 helicopters to Pakistan because of sanctions, it remains to be seen if Turkey can deliver Milgem Corvettes to Pakistan.
This leaves us with just a few options to buy from, China remains are best source for high quality weapons.
That's the reason why it's a good thing that Nigeria is investing in local production of weapons. Hmmmm |

High teaching standard when the facilities are not available. You're completely oblivious of the situation of most facilities in public university and that's why we are agitating for revitalization. Also, You need to pick one side and stop pretending as if you're supporting us. Which one is looking inwards? I am in support of increased funding to universities, but ASUU has done more harm than good. IPPIS is not about facilities, is it . |

malikombi: Its quite unfortunate that your epistle is written out of ignorance. I could have written thousands of pages to debunk your baseless claim but I don't have the time for an ignoramus. However, it is important for you to note that university lecturers on CONUASS are the least paid (colleges and polytechnic lecturers earn more than us) and the issue of salary increment WAS NEVER part of the negotiations with FG. It is also imperative for you to note that ASUU is a body of intellectual and we can't fold our arms and allow the university education system to decay just as primary and secondary is. An average Nigerian would prefer to send their wards to private pry and sec schools but how many people can afford a private university?? The effort of ASUU is what makes public university to be affordable up till this moment. Note that every university has a governing council who decide the fate of erring lecturers/staff. Its not the duty of ASUU to suspend or deal with any erring lecturer. Lastly, please note that when monies are eventually released for the universities, hold the management/governing council responsible because this funds are not shared within ASUU member. For over a decade, ASUU has been urging the Federal government to constitute a visitation panel to constantly visit university and monitor any misappropriation of funds but they didn't. The only money that comes into our purse is EAA which is our hard earned money and we advised them to incorporate it to our salary which they didn't. I stop here for now You are deceiving yourself. So, the members of the governing council are not in ASUU abi. My post says ASUU should speak out and hold its members to high teaching standard. The FG is not the cause of all problems. ASUU could help by looking inwards which it has failed to do. |

Chidorx60: It's a fact that we have very greedy people in government who care less about the agony of students and the needs of education in the country....
But the truth is that some ASUU members should shut up about having passion for their jobs ...they don't care at all....infact it is obvious that ASUU as an association is only made to discuss money, money and more money....never will they ever speak about the needs of student, only on how they can be paid to continue their notorious roles as sadist lecturers....what stupid effort do they even put into lecturing......this so called University staffs are experts in making learning hell on Earth for students......what value are they really adding ...honestly most lectures don't even deserves to be paid for the way they have destroyed and ruined the lives of students by their wickedness, acedemic corruption and sexual attrocities....of course there are a select few lecturers who are different and I pray that God will locate them and bless them....but to the multitude of lecturers who know themselves that they are not adding value to students but yet open their mouths to demand increase in salary knowing fully well that it's costing students there education...God alone will Judge you all in Jesus name. ASUU has become a law unto themselves. Greedy lots. They are all about more money, money for themselves. They care not about Nigerian students. The problems facing our universities are partly caused by lecturers themselves. ASUU members run the universities, ASUU members teach and produce poor graduates, etc.
The major failings of ASUU are summarized below:
ASUU has failed to hold its lecturers to high teaching standard, which uses classroom exercises and case studies to impart knowledge, as done abroad. All ASUU knows is money.
ASUU has failed to speak up on sexual harassment by its members in our universities. All ASUU knows is more money.
ASUU has failed to speak up about the lack of scholarships for deserving students in Nigerian universities. Big Brother Nigeria winner earned millions for a silly show, while educated folks languish. ASUU has been silent about the lack of federal support for bright students. All ASUU knows is themselves.
ASUU members were useless in finding a cure for Covid-19. Professors around the world independently led reaearch into possible vaccines and cure for Coronavirus. Oxford, Imperial College profs, without much noise, commenced research but our profs only think of more salary. This is not about the lack of laboratories; even if there were labs, our profs are useless in solving problems for society.
ASUU has failed to hold universities to account for the billions of naira earned from foundation programmes, post graduate fees, post utme fees, etc. Many infrastructural or research projects can be funded by the universities own internally generated fund.
ASUU has not made members discipline a core part of its mandate. Lecturers act like gods, do what they like and fail students at will. Some do not come to class and some dont teach well. ASUU can help by taking a look at the conduct of its members. But No, ASUU doesn't do that. It is all govts fault.
ASUU's demands are all about salary. More money. Less about research works, research facilities and equipment, commercialization of successful innovations, govt support for Nigerian research innovations. ASUU ought to be fighting for the latter issues, not salary, ippis and rubbish.
As for IPPIS, the FG reserves the right to enrol its employees onto any system it deems fit. ASUU or employees cannot dictate to an employer how to manage its pay system. ASUU's position on IPPIS insults the sensibilities of educated Nigerians and in fact, they are pushing their luck too far.
However, I urge the FG to consider a slight increase in the salary of lecturers. The exact amount it for the govt to decide, but a slight increase is necessary. And an increase in allocation to universities. Education deserves more funding as resources may permit.... but ASUU is all about themselves. Greedy lots.
I also urge the FG to equip our universities and provide reaearch grants for researchers. And finally support Nigerian innovations with testing opportunities and commercialization channels.
As for ASUU, their members are partly responsible for the rot in Nigerian universities and ASUU would do well to hold their members to account for the issues raised above. The FG and the NUC cannot do everything. ASUU should stop being greedy and silly. They are employees of the FG, not a law unto themselves. They cannot dictate or force upwards their salaries nor their pay system. Calm reasonable discussion would do. Not strikes that serves no one any good. But the FG must implement agreements.
Failure by ASUU to behave, the FG and the National Assembly should consider legal dismantling of the union. Nigeria is greater than a union of greedy semi-literate dummies. |

We do not know whether the Army or NAF would operate it. But the NAF are getting new drones soon and have a pool of skilled drone pilots to operate the drones. The Army has none. So, I think rightly that the new NAF drones might form the command they are talking about. He did NOT say UAV command for the Army. But for Op. Lafia Dole. |
