Hello everyone, my visa was approved on 13th August. I should have posted this a while ago but the past weeks have been very demanding with me having to resume school with a short time to prepare. My i20 start date was 20th August. I am settling in well now and I just know I have to post my transcript here because I have also benefited from this forum. I got a denial in July but had another interview in August. I was directed to go to the window of the same VO that interviewed me previously and I was concerned why the same VO was interviewing me. She asked why I chose my course but I answered her with no confidence at all and I began to panic. she typed for a while and then said to me "oh I interviewed you the last time" I said yes and she called for an officer to redirect me to another VO. I took that as a second chance and I continued praying under my breath. I was eventually directed to a male VO. Here is the full transcript

Where are you going?
I am going to ETSU for my masters in Public Administration

Why did you choose this course
I chose Public Administration because I want to be able to consult for public agencies in the future

Run me through your academic background
I have a bachelors in political science and I also have a certification in accounting. I am an affiliate of the association of chartered certified accountants in the United Kingdom

Did you apply to other schools apart from this one
Yes. I also applied to Ohio University

What does Ohio University have in common with ETSU
I am very particular about the financial emphasis of this MPA degree i want to pursue. The courses that Ohio University offered placed a high emphasis on finance just like ETSU. However, ETSU allows me to have a specific concentration in Public Financial Management

When did you get your bachelors
2016

Tell me about this certification from the UK
I had always wanted to be an accountant but I also love governance. In my first year in school I also enrolled as a student of ACCA. Because of my background in political science I had to take all the exams from the beginning. I completed 14 exams alongside my bachelors programs. (I mentioned the titles of some of the exams I took). And I completed both programs at the same time

Who is Olabode (My sponsor)
He is my uncle

How did you get your tuition scholarship
I submitted an essay on what inspired me to study MPA

Summarize the content of your essay
I had always known what i wanted to do from the beginning. when I began my first year in the university I knew I wanted to learn the financial part of governance so I also enrolled as a student accountant. I was able to complete both my degree and certification by the end of four years and this masters degree ties both fields together for me.

He approved my visa after this then asked when I had to be at school. While collecting the white paper I told him 20th and he said 'well you still have some time'. I smiled and told him to have a nice day

I am thankful to everyone that has contributed to this platform one way or the other. I also reached out to a couple of people here and they took their time to prepare me for the interview. Even though I was ill and at the hospital for about three weeks. God healed me just in time to be able to attend the interview. I apologize once again for taking so long before posting this. Thank you all

LagosismyHome:

I agree you don't have to wait till 24hours..... 24hours is for checking in . There also a place to view your ticket after booking, your details should come in when you check the website under manage my booking

Give it a day or two and if it doesn't then call the agency and clarify

Hello @lagosismyhome kindly assist please.

I posted my proposed transcript earlier, I got no response or comment but I have revised it

Why MPA
I can relate the failing systems of Nigeria to poor management of economic resources. An MPA degree gives me knowledge to be able to effect positive change through proper management of public funds and creation of more wealth. Through this, the Dependency ratio for example, which is currently at an all-time might reduce to a considerable low level in the coming years.

How did you know about the school?
I was particularly interested in schools that offered public administration with high emphasis on finance so I did an online search on such schools and ETSU was one of my findings

Why did you choose ETSU
Apart from the fact that I was offered a full tuition waiver, ETSU allows me have a concentration in financial management and aligns with what I really want to do which is public sector financial consulting

What will this degree do for you?
With this MPA degree, I'm certain I'll be able to better tackle where waste and inefficiency is prominent in my local economy and proffer solutions to mitigating them. In the long run, I would be able to contribute to the process of public policy making
Why USA
I chose the US for this degree because I want to be armed with concrete solutions and not just contest and win elections as a politician. It makes sense to me to get knowledge and experience from a system that actually works, the American system

What have you been doing since you graduated
I did my NYSC at a pensions company and I worked as an investment intern with and investment team that managed over 200 billion naira in pension assets. I understood how with the right regulations in place, it is possible for the Nigerian government to create wealth for future retirees. The more reason for my choice of study. Currently, I work as an internal control officer at an IT firm where I ensure adherence to laid down policies and processes. I also conduct audits and recommend changes to policies where necessary

Who is paying for your study?
I have a full tuition scholarship and my uncle will be paying for my living expenses

What does he do?
He owns an IT consulting company and is looking to establishing a new division that will provide advisory to the government on revenue generation and simplify tax collection through the use of USSD short codes. I will be an ideal fit for staffing the new division with my MPA and ACCA certifications. Having a team with the right personnel will improve our chances of securing such partnerships with the government. He is one of the few people that actually cheer me on to bag more degrees. He was highly impressed with my scholarship and I know my living expenses is not difficult for him to handle.

What will you do upon graduation?
I will return to take up a role as an associate at my uncle’s new public private partnership division. I will be able to transfer the budget planning and revenue generating skills I have learned in graduate school to provide public sector advisory. When I gather more industry knowledge in the long run, I intend to start up a consulting firm that will provide advisory services to public agencies

What are the graduation requirements for your program?
I am required to complete 36 credit hours and maintain a CGPA greater than 3.0 within a period of 24 months. I have to complete 18 credits in core MPA courses, 12 credits in my concentration, 3 credits from an internship or consultancy and 3 credits from a management report

What courses will you be taking?
Public budget and finance
Introduction to public administration
Quantitative policy analysis for public managers
Law and ethics in public service
Public sector financial management
Risk management
Non-profit development
Public organization theory
Public personnel management
One guided elective
An internship or consultancy with a municipality

Has your Uncle ever left the country?
Yes, He travels on business trips

How did you get the scholarship?
I qualified for a scholarship because of my GRE scores and application essay. I also had an interview with the director of my program.

@Lagosismyhome Kindly let me know if I'm missing anything out. I would also appreciate a mock interview if you have the time. God bless

Fikky1:
Hello All,

I really appreciate the insight on this forum. I will be going for my second interview on 13th August in Lagos. During my first interview, I was just too jittery and I stuttered a lot. The VO asked me what if my sponsor (uncle) chooses not to sponsor me what will I do. I stuttered and said my mom has some savings but the VO asked if I was with my mom's statement (I wasn't). However, I have prepared a proposed transcript for my second appearance and I would appreciate your scrutiny. I am very much open to constructive criticisms.

Why MPA (Masters in Public Administration)

I was always interested in finance as a child. But when I interacted with career mentors during my teenage years in secondary school, I developed a higher interest in governance, hence my choice of undergraduate study. Political science. But then because I had always loved finance, I enrolled for my professional certification ACCA and decided that I would do a higher degree that would tie the two together for me. An MPA degree achieves this for me.

Why ETSU
I was particularly interested in schools that offered public administration with a high emphasis on finance. During my search for such schools and their required courses, the MPA degree at ETSU stood out because of the concentration in public financial management. There is also an option for internship or consultancy where I will work at a municipality and get practical experince on goverenance and policy making

What will this degree do for you?
With this MPA degree, I will be able to evaluate public policies and initiate solutions for the future of Nigeria because I will be equipped with real-life steps in budgeting and risk analysis of public expenditure among others. This, in turn, will help me better contribute to the public policy process of the country.

Why USA
I chose the US for this degree because I want to be armed with concrete solutions of Nigeria’s future and not just contest and win elections as a politician. It makes sense to me to get knowledge and experience from a system that actually works, the American system.

How many schools did you apply to?
Two. ETSU and Ohio University

Why did you choose ETSU over Ohio University?
ETSU has a separate concentration for public financial management. I chose this over the finance integrated courses at Ohio University. I also received a full tuition waiver from ETSU.

What have you been doing since you graduated
I did my NYSC at a pensions company and I worked as an intern with an investment team that managed over 200 billion naira in pension assets. I understood how with the right regulations in place, it is possible for the Nigerian government to create wealth for future retirees. The more reason for my choice of study. Currently, I work with the finance team as an internal control officer at an IT firm where I ensure adherence to laid down policies and processes. I also conduct audits and recommend changes to policies where necessary

Who is paying for your study?
I have a full tuition scholarship and my uncle will be paying for my living expenses

What does he do?
He owns a telecommunications company and partners with MTN, Glo and 9 mobile etc. He also has a chain of laundromats.

Why is he sponsoring you?
He has been responsible for my education since secondary school. I funded my ACCA certification myself as an undergraduate and when he saw how far I had come and how much further I was willing to go with the public sector, he told me I had all of his support. More importantly, he is looking to establishing a new division at his company that will automate tax collection and management on behalf of the government. I will be an ideal fit for staffing the new division with my MPA and ACCA certifications. Having a team with the right personnel will improve our chances of securing such partnerships with the government.

What if he decides to stop sponsoring you?
I sincerely doubt that this would ever happen because he has been responsible for my education for many years now. We have both come a long way in my academic pursuit and he is one of the few people that actually cheer me on to bag more degrees. He was highly impressed with my scholarship and I know my living expenses is not difficult for him to handle.

What will you do upon graduation?
I will return to take up a role at my uncle’s new public-private partnership division. When I gather more industry knowledge, I will finally ease myself into the public service in the long run.

What are the graduation requirements for your program?
I need 36 credit hours to graduate. I have to complete 18 credits in core MPA courses, 12 credits in my concentration, 3 credits from an internship or consultancy and 3 credits from a management report

What courses will you be taking?
Public budget and finance
Introduction to public administration

Public sector financial management

An internship or consultancy with a municipality

Please let me know what questions I may have to prepare for as well. PS: I wrote GRE and Toefl
THANK YOU ALL
