PoliticsTurning LAKAJI Rail Route Into Viable Agro Hub by Flathead8(op): 10:47pm On Jun 07, 2023
The Lagos-Kano-Jibiya (LAKAJI) corridor is a 1,225-kilometre route that runs from Lagos through Kano, ending in Jibiya at the border with Niger Republic. It is a major conduit for food supply from the North to the South. But farmers are finding it difficult to transport food across the region. It has become imperative to tackle the problem as Nigeria is set to play a major role in addressing Africa’s food security issues. DANIEL ESSIET reports.
The Lagos-Kano-JIbiya (LAKAJI) corridor is a 1,225-kilometre transport route. It is a broad swathe of territory beginning from the Lagos port and terminating at the Republic of Niger border of Jibiya in Katsina State.

The area covers Jigawa,Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Kwara, Niger, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Kogi, Kaduna, Kano and Katsina states as well as the Jibiya route. It has arable land, special economic zones designed to promote agribusiness, major water retention and irrigation schemes and large grain storage facilities.

Offering rice, sugar cane, maize, cassava, poultry, fish, cattle and dairy, cocoa, cashews, sustainable seafood, sesame seed and shea and shea butter and lots more, the region is one of those untapped agricultural destinations. Production and processing centres along the corridor also benefit from proximity to dense urban population centers that provide end markets for domestic goods.

So far, the corridor is said to be Nigeria’s busiest transport corridor facilitating the movement of 30 million tonnes of goods per year valued at more than $6 billion and accounting for 36 per cent of the country’s total gross domestic product (GDP).This is because it is a major conduit for food supplies from the North to the South. It is also a vital channel for food supplies to neighbouring countries in Niger, Chad, Cameroon ,Benin. Experts agreed the area has the potential to stimulate investment in Nigeria’s agricultural sector, linking the largest consumer market in West Africa(Lagos) with some of the highest potential agricultural zones in the region. Leveraging on the potential of the region, according to them, offers untold benefits for the nation and, ultimately, the continent. Interestingly, the fundamentals are all in place for the area to act as an agriculture hub.

Speaking on this, the National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu urged the Federal Government to pay more attention to the LAKAJI corridor to ease trade. This, he said would be possible through the provision of basic infrastructure that will ease production and transportation of agricultural produce. Tinubu, who spoke at the just concluded Katsina State Economic and Investment Summit, said LAKAJI is an acronym for Lagos–Kano-Jibia corridor.

Represented by a former Lagos State Commissioner of Finance and Executive Director at First Bank, Mr. Tokunbo Abiru, Tinubu said a strategic approach must be adopted where the upper north has the capacity for agricultural production that should be based on strength.

The Kano-Kaduna rail (part of the 2,733km Lagos-Kano rail) has reached over 70% completion as tracks are been laid

This line will energize the Lagos-Kano-Jibia corridor, Nigeria’s busiest transport corridor hauling 30 million tons worth $6 billion forming 36% of Nigeria’s GDP

A great thing to note is that Kano will house the biggest rail station in the country.

BusinessBUA Cement Secures $500m Facility To Boost Production, Create Jobs by Flathead8(op): 10:24pm On Jun 07, 2023
The financing will allow BUA, Nigeria’s second-largest cement producer, to develop new production lines in Sokoto State.

BUA Cement Plc on Monday said that it had secured a $500 million facility from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and partners to develop energy-efficient cement production capacity and strengthen its equipment and logistics capabilities in northern Nigeria.

The company, in a statement, said this investment, marked the largest-ever investment by IFC, will create up to 12,000 direct and indirect jobs and contribute to economic and infrastructural development within Nigeria and the greater Sahel region.

According to the statement, IFC’s $500 million financing package includes a $160.5 million loan from IFC’s own account, a $94.5 million loan through the Managed Co-Lending Portfolio Program (MCPP), and $245 million in parallel loans from syndication partners; the African Development Bank (AfDB) $100 million, the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) $100 million, and the German Investment Corporation, Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft (DEG) $45 million.

It said the financing, announced during the Africa CEO Forum in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, will allow BUA, Nigeria’s second-largest cement producer, to develop new production lines in northern Nigeria’s Sokoto State.

The company said the plants will run partly on alternative fuels derived from waste and solar power. Each will produce about three million tons of cement annually when complete, serving markets in Nigeria, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

“Investing in northern Nigeria is integral to IFC’s strategy to promote sustainable development in underserved regions.

“This includes areas with limited opportunities and a need for increased private sector engagement. The new plants will provide local developers with a reliable and affordable source of cement, and bolster the construction of essential infrastructure, fostering economic growth and prosperity for the region,” it said.

Job Opportunities
The project is expected to create about 1,000 direct and 10,800 indirect jobs. Direct jobs include those in manufacturing, engineering, and advanced automation systems. Indirect jobs include those in the cleaning, maintenance, mining, and transportation sectors.

AbdulSamad Rabiu, Chairman and Founder of BUA Group, said, “BUA is delighted to partner with IFC and other esteemed institutions in securing this $500 million facility to develop energy-efficient cement production capacity and strengthen our equipment and logistics capabilities in northern Nigeria.

“In line with our commitment to sustainability and ESG principles, this investment will create jobs and contribute to economic and infrastructural development within Nigeria and the greater Sahel region.

“We are particularly pleased to have successfully gone through the rigorous process with IFC, AfDB, AFC, and DEG, which validates our responsible business practices. By focusing on greener fuels and enhancing our equipment and logistics platform, BUA Cement is building a foundation for sustainable infrastructure growth and a more inclusive society.”

“We are pleased to join our partners to support BUA with an investment that will boost industrialisation, create jobs and deliver economic growth in northern Nigeria, a region with significant economic potential,” said Makhtar Diop, IFC’s Managing Director.

The financing package announced by IFC and its partners will also allow BUA to replace some of its diesel trucks with vehicles that run partly on natural gas, over time producing fewer emissions. As part of the project, IFC will also advise BUA on developing a gender-inclusive workplace strategy that creates more opportunities for women across its operations.

Samaila Zubairu, CEO & President of Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), said, “Following an initial $200 million investment in BUA Group in 2021, we are proud to play another key role in this landmark manufacturing project set to transform the construction sector in northern Nigeria and the entire country.

“By investing in this project, we are sustainably building Nigeria’s local manufacturing capacity, empowering local communities and creating employment opportunities.

“AFC is committed to working with our partners to accelerate development impact through infrastructure solutions that support value addition, industrialisation, and job creation throughout Africa.”

Also, Solomon Quaynor, Vice President – Private Sector, Infrastructure and Industrialization of the African Development Bank (AfDB), said: “The African Development Bank is pleased to be partnering with IFC and BUA on this expansion project as it is aligned with our priority strategies of industrialising Africa and improving the quality of lives of Africans through the increase in cement production which will lead to the development of additional affordable housing and critical infrastructure in Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries, while supporting the use of cleaner energy at BUA’s Sokoto facility.”

“DEG’s mission is to be a reliable partner to private sector enterprises as drivers of development and creators of qualified jobs. We are pleased to contribute to this transaction together with our development finance partner institutions. Together we support BUA in its transformation towards a more sustainable production by implementing innovative technology. The significant reduction of CO2 emissions and the creation of decent jobs in a region with many vulnerable households are key factors for DEG’s financing,” said Gunnar Stork, Senior Director at DEG.

The investment in BUA is part of IFC’s strategy to promote diversified, inclusive growth and job creation in Nigeria, where IFC supports the manufacturing, agribusiness, healthcare, infrastructure, technology, and financial services sectors. IFC has an active investment portfolio of $2.3 billion in Nigeria.

IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, is the largest global development institution focused on the private sector in emerging markets.

PoliticsRe: Buhari - Nigerians Must Unite Against Fulani by Flathead8: 1:02pm On Jun 01, 2023
You said you want Nigeria to fight the fulani. Let's start with a simple question, tell me just 1 fulani leader or elite that has no hausa bloodline in his/her family/lineage
Antitankweapon:
Buhari deliberately refused to support Igbo presidency to spite the SE. This fact is as clear as daylight. I am not Igbo. I am from Benue State but let me remind everyone that Igbos are indigenous Nigerians. Igbos are Nigerians by nature. Nigeria is their one and only home and the igbos would come first before the fulani.

The Fulani are not indigenous Nigerians. If migrant Buhari thinks he can mistreat the Igbo and go free, then he is in for a shocker. Fellow Nigerians would stand up for their brothers.

I am in pains because a perfect opportunity to heal the wounds of the civil war and reunite Nigerians for the future is almost lost. Except the judiciary saves the day. Buhari like a typical Fulani trouble maker has left Nigeria on one leg. He deliberately reopened past wound and set the nation on a dangerous path.

Thank God that Nigerians from the North, South, East and West were united in voting Peter Obi in the presidential election. The real results I have seen is conclusive and testament that Nigerians have evolved and are happy to move on in love and unity. But not Buhari, not Fulani.

Buhari's action is typical of every fulani man. They forment trouble everywhere they go. Every community that the fulani entered, today there is regret. From Zamfara, to Kaduna, Zangon Kataf, Jos North, Benue, etc. Every community in Nigeria that the fulani entered, today there are killings and regret. That is the nature of the fulani, they are trouble makers.

Uthman Dan Fodio came into Nigeria and fought the Hausa kings who hosted him. Ahmadu Bello made offensive comments about Nigeria being fulani estate. Imagine a migrant speaking in such manner. Imagine the audacity. The Fulanis in the North are the root causes of the violence, bloodletting, extremism, backwardness and despair that pervades the North.

By nature, the fulani are retrogressive, backward, nomadic and trouble making. Everywhere they go, there is trouble....
That is the exact attitude Buhari showed in the last election. He deliberately wanted spite the igbos and cause more problems for the nation. Thank God, Nigerians have evolved. The igbos are not angry. They know that Nigerians across tribal lines voted for Peter Obi. They know that Nigerians want a national rebirth where everyone feels safe and secure. The igbos would not fall for Buhari's tricks.

As Peter Obi tries to reclaim his mandate, I admonish Nigerians to reflect on Buhari's attitude towards the Nigeria and its peoples. I urge Nigerians to use Buhari's actions to understand why there is crises in the Middle Belt and in the North. The Fulani man never seeks peace. He forments trouble.

Until Nigerians realize that the fulani are backward and retrogressive by nature and that nothing good comes out of them, we would never make progress as a nation. Until the Middle Belt and the North stand United against Fulani, they would never have peace. And they would continue to die.

If Buhari, a migrant, thinks he can get away with spiting indigenous Nigerians like igbos, then he has failed. The Igbos are real Nigerians, they are indigenous, and Nigerians stand strong with their Igbo brothers. And I promise you that Buhari would be the ultimate downfall of Fulani in Nigeria. Mark my words.

The interest rate set by Central Bank is above 18%, hence it is why cost of borrowing is too high..

The cost of borrowing will impact the ability of private business to borrow and invest.

Tinubu is saying it must be reduced.

Cbn is using it as an instrument to control inflation, but Tinubu believes Fiscal responsibility is what is needed to reduce inflation not high interest rate.
