This is how to deal and work with them. Never, ever, ever defer to them or act lower than them. Never ever.
This means you have to be brilliant, super-smart and confident. This is the main attribute that shatters the "black man/ African" stereotype. Look in their face, eyeball to eyeball and hold conversations. Work smart and look smart. If your job or engagement requires that you look smart, wear a smart suit and look smart. Even on the trains, the train managers will not ask you for tickets nor harass you racially- they will perceive that you know your rights and are educated.

Learn sarcasm from them and use it intelligently. I remember when a white fellow told me, "I was in Africa recently and we saw the lions..." My response was, "I presume, you went to Kenya? Or some particular country? Come on, its the age of the internet! Africa is not a country you should know this!" Of course he went on to speak with a bit more respect.

Crying out or cowering will simply prove that you are timid and the stereotype they know about the "black man". Sorry Sis, but this tactic will only increase the racism and cause further victimisation or as its said in psychology, covert racism.

Spot on. First day in my job I was spoken to like a nobody. Just because I’m the only black in the government department where I work. Gave me a hell of hassles. I told them 6 months I’ll be their boss. I worked hard, and within 5 months I applied for a job next grade up. You know what I got the Job. Those same folks that disrespected me are now being managed by me. What I’m I saying here? I’m not trying to say I’m too good, but making a point if you respect yourself and proof to them you’re smart and intelligent they’ll respect you. But by the way Racism is everywhere even in Nigeria, we call our Racism Tribalism.

Nigeria's air force said it had killed some senior Boko Haram militants and believes it has fatally wounded the group's leader in a raid on the Islamists' northeast heartland.

Government planes attacked the fighters in the village of Taye inside the Sambisa forest in Borno State on Friday, the air force said, adding it had only just confirmed details of the raid.Their leader, so called "Abubakar Shekau", is believed to be fatally wounded on his shoulders,' the statement released on Tuesday from army spokesman Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman added. The military has reported Shekau's death in the past, only to have a man purporting to be him appear later, apparently unharmed, making video statements.

There was no immediate reaction from the group.

Boko Haram's list of victims - dead, displaced or abducted - meanwhile grows longer by the day.The jihadist group has claimed more than 20,000 deaths, displaced 2.6 million people from their homes, and kidnapped thousands of children since it started fighting in 2009 for an independent Islamist state in Nigeria.

But the kidnapped Chibok girls continue to define the Boko Haram insurgency.

More than two years after their capture in April 2014, the girls remain the symbol of the insurgency - and a political embarrassment to the two Nigerian administrations that have failed to secure their return.

On Sunday August 14, the Chibok girls were back in the spotlight after a Boko Haram video purportedly showing some of them was released, following months of silence and speculation about their fates.

Although it is unclear when the video was shot and if the girls are all from Chibok, experts say its release date is not a coincidence. Of the 276 girls kidnapped from the Government Girls Secondary School in the northeastern town of Chibok, 218 are still missing.

Dozens managed to escape in the early hours of the abduction, and one of them was found in May.

The audacity of the mass kidnapping - and the failure of the Nigerian government to find the girls - shocked the world.

Boko Haram catapulted from an obscure regional threat to a high-profile terror group, as politicians and celebrities around the globe posted the #bringbackourgirls hashtag on social media.

The response was 'unique', said Yan St-Pierre, head of the Modern Security Consulting Group in Berlin.

'While other hostages held by terrorists have also caused some media interest - the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in Palestine or the Iran hostage crisis in 1980, for example - it was rather localised,' he said.

'But in the case of the Chibok girls, the media reaction was international.'

The interest in the Chibok girls transformed them into a valuable asset for Boko Haram.

'It is both a blessing, because they were protected a little, and a curse, because they have become Boko Haram's bargaining chip,' St-Pierre said.

In the new video, Boko Haram demands a prisoner swap of its fighters in exchange for the Chibok girls.

However, the seizure of the Chibok girls is not unique in Nigeria.

On April 14 this year, the two-year anniversary of the kidnapping, UNICEF said that 'up to 7000 women and girls might be living in abduction and sex slavery', often forcibly married or used as suicide bombers.

'These are only estimates, the number is probably much higher,' Toby Fricker of UNICEF Nigeria told AFP.

'Chibok is only part of the tragedy.'

Human Rights Watch revealed in early August that over the past three years 10,000 young boys had been kidnapped, with some of them being trained as soldiers.

The largest abduction took place in November 2014, when 300 children were taken from the town of Damasak in Borno State, according to Human Rights Watch.

'The girls of Chibok are a symbol,' said Munir Safieldin, a UN humanitarian coordinator.

He said they represent tens of thousands of victims and that in many ways their saga encapsulates the entire conflict.

While the Nigerian army has won many military victories, the northeast of the country is ravaged after years of fighting Boko Haram.

With tens of thousands of children at risk of dying from starvation, it will take more to end the war than just bringing the Chibok girls back home.

Reason I'm asking is because of a friend who’s complaining how his girlfriend to be always complaining about Money, and when my friend told the girl I'm not your father for God sake, this should be your parents responsibility, the girl went mad and even refused picking his calls. I bet if someone with such accent ask you out you'll insult him and ask him to go look for his type of woman,accent and command of English goes a long way and makes people understand your point so as to be on the same page with you.Is not what one feel on the inside but passing their message to people who are listening so as to unerstand what they're plans are.Better to speak Hausa and get an interpreter that will work out better than stressing people to try and come to terms of what he's trying to say.

Well the article has many valid points which are quite correct.However,I have many friends who have got jobs after their degree in the UK.The reasons are not far fetched.YOU HAVE TO RAISE YOUR GAME;Seek the right information,work on yourself to be the best you can be,use your spare time wisely and get good grades.A UK degree is qualitative and highly respected worldwide.

Good point, If you want to succeed in the UK after studies you really have to be the best of the best as job interview process can sometimes be rigorous. I had to go through different stages of Interview over 6 months to be able to get the Job I desire and the company where more than happy to push through all necessary documents for me to get a work permit which luckily I did. Educational standard in the UK is much more advance than Nigeria.Load of Nigeria Students come here with the intention of just studying but not committing to what they want to achieve. No matter what people say Education in the UK is much more better than Education in Nigeria..If your intentions is to come here and study do that and after go back if your intentions is to live after studies then work hard and you will surely achieve.

Thank u jare. Most of the commentators so far have not in their lives step their foot in Warri, but u can see their review of the city. Pathetic.

Warri like every other urban city in Nigeria has its challenges ranging from crime in selected parts of the town, filthy environment and touting behaviour from illiterate boys etc, but surely what is being painted about the town is pure falsehood and some simple people take these funny stories as gospel truth.

All we need is visionary leader in the likes of Fashola, Oshiomole etc to put in place the right infrastructure that would make the town a true oil city.

Besides, Shoprite is opening a branch in Warri on Thursday.
