Good evening to you all, we have discussed about energy sources, protein sources, fat and oil, and fibre. Tonight we will discuss about vitamins. *VITAMINS* Apparently, all feedstuffs ingredients contain some vitamins, but their concentrations vary widely. In plants, vitamin concentration can be affected by harvesting, processing, storage conditions, plant species and part. Limiting vitamins in natural diets (mostly for poultry and pigs), thus the need for supplementation!? Types of vitamin: Fat soluble (A, D, E & K) and Water soluble (B1, B2, B5, B6, B12 & C)choline etc. Source of vitamin to livestock: firstly premix, salt lick, fruits, vegetables, yeast, liver and Kidney etc. Major functions of vitamins: metabolism, good sight & antioxidant etc Note: Ruminant animals have ability to produce vitamin B complex in there rumen. Good evening, I will be discussing briefly about fillers (fibre source) in livestock feed production. Fibre are feed ingredients that are low in energy(kcal) and crude protein(cp%) but high in crude fibre. It serve as diluent, when formulating feed low in energy or crude protein. Examples: PKC, wheat offal, brewery dry grain, seasame offal, rice bran, corn bran, cassava pulp etc For more update, like our page https://m.facebook.com/FeedFormulationHub/?ref=bookmarks Happy farming!!! |

Someone view that might be useful to others : I have read with keen observation to all that's said about wood shavings and sand. Lots of people have tried to cut corners especially when wood shavings is hard to come by. Recently, in a pen capacity of 10,000 broilers, divided into 10 partitions, sharp sand was used in one partition to compensate for the wood shavings which was sufficient to go round. It was good at the beginning giving minimal wetness. And later at 2nd week, the sand was still in good condition, the birds were clean and there was no incidence of cocci or enteritis. At 3rd week however, the birds became dirty and there were little traces of blood (not frank) in their feaces. Not alarming but indicating something subclinical. The cleanliness of the birds reduced seriously as majority of birds became obviously unkept. Meanwhile, a similar observation was made in the other partitions in terms of bloody feaces, but negligible. The birds in partitions with wood shavings were still clean. At 4th week, the bloody feaces disappeared after administering pantacox to cover the birds against most culprit of enteritis and coccidiosis. But there was an obvious need to change the litter material is the partition with sand. The partitions with wood shavings still looked clean and dry. At 5th weeks, I still had to make sure the litter was packed in the partition with sand because of the obviously bad state. At 6th weeks however, the wood shavings were bad and needed immediate change. But then, my production cycle is for 6 weeks so the pen was just emptied. Note that in between, other activities took place that I couldn't state here because of time. From my primary observation, sand can be used to on smaller birds and changed more frequently when the birds are older and as soon as the litter becomes wet, odour becomes offensive, and during and outbreak to control level of contamination in the pen. Personally, I still prefer wood shavings. A lot of factors should be considered though... Ventilation, stocking density, and water spillage should be closely monitored to avoiding having to change litter materials too frequently. A well managed litter is always more efficient and preferable than changed litter. Cc: S K Tofem Whatsapp group |

Total replacement of wood shavings with sharp sand: due to high demand of wood shavings as bedding material and scarcity in some areas, I will advice farmers that have sharp sand in there locality to use it as bedding material. I've used it in my farm and the birds are doing great. Happy farming!!! https://m.facebook.com/FeedFormulationHub/?ref=bookmarks like our page for more updates

Fat and oil: this are important in animal nutrition because of the function they performed. Fat and oil are good source of fatty acid and they are also carrier for fat soluble multi vitamins. Functions: it helps in lubrication; helps in formation of some certain hormone and steroid; energy source and also source of vitamins. Examples: soya oil, groundnut oil, full fat soya, lard, palm oil, palm kennel oil, tallow etc https://m.facebook.com/FeedFormulationHub/?ref=bookmarks Like our page for more updates |

Effect of genetic make up(breeds) on nutrition: despite the fact that all this birds (turkeys, broilers & layers) where fed turkey starter (25% crude protein min.) for five weeks. The turkey weigh 900grams, broiler 1.4kg while the layers weigh 300grams. Moral: Feeding birds beyond there nutrient requirement will increase your cost of product and have no tangible effect on there growth performance. Note: Breed, nutrition and management plays vital roles in livestock production. For more update: https://m.facebook.com/FeedFormulationHub/?ref=bookmarks Happy farming!!!

Energy source are class of feed with less than 20% crude protien and less than 18% crude fiber or less than 35% cell wall on a dry basis. Examples: Grain(maize, guinea corn, millet, oat, rye & barely) mill byproducts(indomie, spagetti, macaroni, flour, semo, molasses, biscuit, gala) roots and tubers (cassava, potatoes and yam) and lipid /oil (soya oil, palm oil, full fat soya, palm kemel oil, lard) Note: Animal eat to meet there energy requirement, that's why you see that when you feed you birds they first pick the maize inside it. Energy is so important to the extent that any thing we do energy is required. https://m.facebook.com/FeedFormulationHub/?ref=bookmarks Like our page for more updates |
