What happened recently is enough for Iran to ditch the NPT and all nuclear proliferation talks and proceed to have nuclear weapons Iran needs to also tread carefully so as not to be duped into making concessions that would undermine its detterence but these sanctions is just killing I fear they will make some painful concessions.

They will not make that mistake again. USA had thrown almost all of its cards in the last attack. Trust? Gone. Element of surprise? Gone. Weaknesses? Noted. I had thought Pezeshkian was never attacked but now we know they really did try to assassinate him. Why always Putin?

Iran has been having regular tripartite meetings on this nuclear issue with China and Russia.
It had two in short succession while the negotiations showed promise.
The meetings were arranged to coordinate the Axis position.
That position was Iran's red line on enrichment.
The Axis has a unified position but Putin and Lavrov are playing devil's advocate and undermining it.

So if a war starts with China today and everyone in the Axis agrees on one position, they'll start dropping lamba about Russia's European roots and what not in the middle of the fighting.

You're right that the JCPOA recognized Iran's right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, and Russia supported that agreement back in 2015. They didn’t object to Iran enriching uranium up to 3.67% under strict monitoring by the IAEA.

But things have changed since then mostly because Iran is now enriching uranium far beyond JCPOA limits, up to 60%, and restricting international inspections. That’s much closer to weapons-grade material. Russia hasn’t openly condemned Iran for this, but it also hasn’t supported those actions. In fact, Russia has been calling for all parties to return to the original JCPOA terms.

So why the change in tone?

It’s not that Russia suddenly agrees with U.S. or Israeli demands. It’s that Russia, simply put "doesn’t want Iran to develop nuclear weapons" not because it’s siding with the West, but because a nuclear Iran could trigger a dangerous arms race in the Middle East. That’s a threat to Russia too, especially since the region is close to its borders and Russia has relationships with both Iran and countries like Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Also, there have been credible reports especially during the original JCPOA talks, that Russia offered to store Iran’s enriched uranium or even supply Iran with pre-enriched uranium for peaceful nuclear use. This would let Iran keep its nuclear energy program without building up large amounts of enriched uranium inside the country. That proposal was seen as a way to build trust and prevent weaponization.

And yes, Russia has previously offered to take enriched uranium from Iran and possibly convert it back for civilian use, as part of a compromise.
This isn’t about “betraying” Iran. It’s about Russia protecting its own interests while still opposing Western dominance. Multipolarity doesn’t mean automatic support for everything a partner does, it means acting independently, even if that means disagreeing sometimes.

While the United States particularly under the leadership of Donald Trump has often acted with a sense of bravado and impunity, believing it can dictate terms on the global stage, it is, in fact, Iran that has significantly complicated the situation by being slow-witted.

Initially, Iran agreed to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) based on concerns surrounding nuclear proliferation and in exchange for sanctions relief.
Trump’s subsequent actions namely his decision to withdraw from the JCPOA stemmed from the deal's failure to address critical issues such as Iran’s ballistic missile program and other classified activities. His administration aimed to negotiate a more comprehensive agreement that would effectively eliminate any pathway for Iran to eventually acquire nuclear weapons.

Now that Trump has returned to office and has attempted, through arrogant diplomatic channels, to bring Iran back to the negotiating table, progress has been sluggish. With reports suggesting that Iran is mere days away from achieving weapons-grade nuclear capability, Trump had to bomb Iran to look strong.

Let us be clear, Iran has repeatedly claimed it has no intention of developing nuclear weapons. If that is truly the case, then the presence of uranium enriched well beyond civilian energy needs despite Iran’s commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) raises serious questions about its intentions.

Iran cannot acquire nuclear weapons by accident. It is a deliberate path, one that requires either a firm commitment to abandon all military nuclear ambitions or a decisive move toward them. There is no ambiguity in such a consequential choice.

This is one of the rare occasions where Russia and the United States appear to be aligned in their stance. Acquiring nuclear weapons will now prove significantly more difficult for any nation.

Iran, to their own detriment, take their religious views more seriously than we think. I think the enrichment is an attempt to get a sort of loophole in their doctrine whereby they wouldn't build a nuclear weapon but if the need should arise, they could assemble a few warheads in a matter of weeks. Their refusal to use chemical weapons during the Iraq war is a proof of that. The enrichment could have also been an attempt to obtain more leverage for future negotiations since until recently, Iran had thought it was dealing with sane actors that wouldn't attack them while talks were still ongoing.

Iran, despite their shortcomings and silly dogma, wants to survive like every other country. We need to throw away how they've been portrayed and look at things objectively. Iran would never trade its 90 million population and rich history for a nuclear first-strike on Israel. It is not possible. Remember North Korea. The entire Western world was yapping about how dangerous North Korea's nuclear program is for the world. 19 years after its first nuclear test, North Korea has still not attacked a single country while the alarmists have attacked more than 5 without showing any signs of slowing down.

Iran needs a good deterrent and that is exactly what the hardliners in Israel and the White House are against. Netanyahu who is sounding the alarm about Iran's enrichment today was completely against the JCPOA agreement that paused that 'threat.' The moment his buddy Trump came in, the agreement was thrown away. What they seek is a weakened Iran that they can bomb at will like Lebanon and Syria without a touch of retaliation and Russia allowing it to happen (if they're really not doing anything behind the scenes for Iran) is pure betrayal.

Security agreements are good but alliances form and break, and friends can have other priorities like Adam pointed out. I could be wrong, but NATO as at today would only go to war for Britain, France, Germany, and USA against a superpower in my opinion. All those Eastern European cockroaches would be abandoned to their fate should push goes to shove. Russia was supposed to help protect Syria, but they stood back and allowed the IAF to pummel Syrian soldiers with impunity. Iran can halt its nuclear program today and sign an agreement with Trump and then when the next administration comes, they'd reimpose sanctions on them and demand that they hand over their missiles or face military action. Russia would then maybe offer to sell RPGs to Iran as compensation.

I might just be in denial but I'm still positive that a 4D chess in play but if Adam turns out to be right, then Iran has been undeservedly betrayed.

The supreme leader didn’t allow Iran to retaliate with chemical weapons when Iraq used chemical weapons during the war. You're right. I've also seen comments saying per Shia views, you are obligated to stop fighting when the enemies stops. These are all suicidal views that need to perish if they want to survive.

In the 21st century, you do not publicly state that you forgo negotiations in its entirety.
In 2019 after acquiring nukes, North Korea was open to dismantling its primary nuclear facility for sanctions relief.
That deal fell apart because the US, as always, wanted more.

You receive communication, claim your doors of diplomacy are always open, and you strategically ignore it.
Iran is doing this atm, at least for now. Could change.
Araqchi did say Iran was open to talks. He added, however, that negotiations will only be about its nuclear program.
And any agreement must incorporate Iran's right to enrichment.

Their position has not changed from before the war.
Only now they add the easy to miss condition that after the US/Israel sucker punch in the middle of negotiations, they're not eager to return to the table and must secure guarantees first.

The US/Israel now interpret this as them buying time for a rebuild.
Consequently, they're ratcheting plans to attack again before that rebuild can be completed..

I'll give you another example.
Iran goes to great lengths to insist that they have not abandoned the NPT.
But there are no IAEA inspectors in Iran anymore and they've removed all IAEA monitoring systems.
They're still an NPT signatory. But the IAEA is unable to enforce the critical part of the NPT and JCPOA (which is still active as the E3 have not joined in placing massive sanctions on Iran). They're having their cake and eating it.

Of course, since a war is imminent, both schemes serve them well until the missiles start flying.

The only hubbub about Iran is that they have very obvious lapses in vital areas.
And that is fouling the entirety of their strategy.
Think for a minute, if they actually had better opsec.
They'd have repelled more of Israel's attack and be in a stronger position going into the next round.

All of a sudden, Putin agrees with them.

Explain that change.

That is likely an attempt to sow discord between them because if Putin did say that, it would be too sensitive for them to disclose to the media. I believe Putin has a soft spot for Israel and he ought to more for Iran, but such treachery would be too costly for Russia in the long run. Russians offer tremendous assistance to their nuclear program and I'm not sure how true this is, but former CIA analyst Larry Johnson said Russia helped Iran recover from several cyber attacks throughout the war. I am still hesitant to draw a final conclusion on Putin

It appears like its late but I can see how planning something this complex could take 2 weeks.
They do need to make huge arrangements with China for precursors and other logistics before bringing 1500 facilities online (that's from their statement).

The behavior he is exhibiting there is called a defeatist mentality. The fact that he is willing to forgo reports from even pro-Israeli outlets and only focus on IDF official statements is an indicator that he is undergoing some serious levels of cope.

I feel he has realized that Israel isn’t winning this war. And he is trying to console himself by wanting to block out any other news, including pro-Israeli ones, that doesn’t conform with whatever propaganda the IDF spills out.

When we keep telling them that victory in war is determined by whether you achieved your objectives and not by killing civilians, you see him and his supporters bragging about how Israel has killed tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians, and whatnot.

As I have repeatedly said, the only way to defeat Hamas is for Israel to go into those tunnels and engage Hamas in close-up combat. Subterranean warfare is what they call it.

Some of these tunnels go up to 70 meters underground, deeper than New York underground stations, which stop at 53 meters, so it won’t be easy. Israel should also be ready to take the large number of casualties that will come with such an operation. Anything short of fighting Hamas in the tunnel is pure gimmicks.

I couldn't have said this better. The laws themselves are backfiring, because now they have more and more people openly questioning Israeli lobby in America. I remember Spain hanging Israeli flags after Hamas attack but now they're at the forefront in calling for the EU to sanction them. The entire narrative is failing daily. The world can see Israeli settlers putting Hamas to shame in the West Bank, and too many exzionists are reading beyond October 7th.
