EducationRe: Say No To ASUU Strike by Forester45(m): 9:33pm On Sep 14, 2013
Dospix: I must state very clearly to you that i am not being mislead by anyone. My view about the current ongoing strike are drawn from my critical study of the current situation. I must let you know that even if the government pumps 200 thrilion to rehabilitate the infrastructures in the various University in this country the problems we face can never be solved. I am of the opinion that the bedrock of corruption in Nigeria begins from the Nigerian Universities. What would you say about a young hard working Nigerian student who is deprived from his merited admission because his parent can not muster 200 thousand naira the vc of his preferred university is demanding for; what would you say about a lecturer who openly comes to the lecture room to declare to the students that if they don't pay 5000 thousand naira to him their chances of passing his course is very blur; what would you say about lecturers who sexually molest young innocent students, threatening them of 'carry over' if the reject their advancement; what do you have to say about lectures who sell five pieces of their photocopied lecture note at the rate of two hundred?...the list goes on and on and on. The Nigerian university body is very corrupt; a fact we cannot deny; however i do not dispute the fact that we still have individual with high standing moral integrity in our tertiary institution, but they happen to be very few. My point: If the structural building of our universities are built to the standard of the best in the world, and the body that governor it are not cleansed from their illness of greedy and corruption, your above enumerated issues would still persist. My opinions are mine and so shall it for eternity.
Some of what you said is correct. But can you tell a sector in Nigeria that is not heavily corrupt??. An erring V.C is an administrator appointed by Mr President or a Governor if its a state university. The government has every right to prosecute a corrupt V.C, but due to the fact that universities are not properly funded, some lecturers tends to exploit students which i don't subscribe to. Those who live in a glass house do not throw stone. In this case, FG can't say a word because they even encourage universities to generate revenues to close the gab of poor funding. Your statement that if FG pump 200 trillion, the problems will still remain is a pessimistic statement. If the money is handled well, there will be visible changes on ground. ASUU demands are just. It is for the betterment of learning in Nigeria, not necessarily for self enrichment. The earned allowance issue is not applicable to all the lecturers. If implemented, students don't have to pay for project topic approval or supervision.
EducationRe: Say No To ASUU Strike by Forester45(m): 2:12pm On Sep 14, 2013
How do you expect me to avoid your thread when you are clearly being mislead. I cant keep quite and allow you to remain in ignorance. How can you explain the fact that students graduated from Nigerian university are being retrained by multinational companies like SHELL just because of poor infrastructure in our universities.
Try and visit universities in Malaysia, Ghana and see for yourself if what we have in Nigeria are qualified to be called a university.
Students are staying sixteen in one room in Nigerian universities.
Students go out of university environment looking for an institution to analyze their project/research work.
It may interest you to know that we still have empty libraries existing in our universities.
We still have pre-colonial equipments in our universities.
Are we talking about bad roads in our university, lack of water, light, and toilet facilities. Students of higher institutions are doing so called short-put. How many university in Nigeria has Electron Microscope?, and yet you are comfortable with all these abnormalities. It is very unfortunate. If students supports ASUU to address this issue ones and for all, is it bad?
Students should sacrifice and join the struggle lets get it right.
It is sad that students are always at the receiving end, but our government should be held accountable. They are not doing well. You are a witness. This is a simple logic, if the government cant fulfill all ASUU demands, let them work out modalities on how to address it in a gradual process. Government is deceiving the masses if u are not aware. FG/ASUU 2009 agreement should be implemented or they should present to ASUU a written document to show they will implement it within a stipulated period of time, even if it will take them 8yrs, that's all.

China is only regarded as a superpower because it's got 3million man standing military and it's nuclear asernals, not because it owns any superior technological fighting power!

Again, you cannot underestimate the power of numbers. Unleashing one million soldiers across the borders into the south can do a lot of damage, not to America of course!
. What does it take the US to destroy 1million soldiers? Is it hell fire missiles from drones, or B2 stealth bombers, cruise missiles frm destroyers?, or F-16s, F-35s with precision guided misiles? Think of it.

PDP not happy over Jonathan, Obasanjo feud.

December 3, 2012 | 12:36 am
News

ABUJA— STRONG indications emerged, yesterday, that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP is not supporting President Goodluck Jonathan onhis attack on former President Olusegun Obasanjo, especially through aides.
According to PDP, Obasanjo may not be perfect in his actions or utterances, but Jonathan must tread softly because of the personality of the two- time President.
It also noted Obasanjo’s status as a former Military Head of State and a civilian President.
President Jonathan and Gen. Obasanjo (Rtd)
Speaking with some journalists in Abuja, yesterday, a member of PDP National Working Committee of the party, NWC who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that President Jonathan must not undermine the powerful influence of Obasanjo among the northern oligarchy stressing that it was not necessary for the President to take on Obasanjo.
The NWC member said the President should not allow his aides to create friction betweenhim and the former President, adding that exchanging words on the pages of newspapers with the former President was uncalled for.
The NWC member, who noted that Jonathan was not properlyadvised to take on Obasanjo, especially against the backdrop that he benefited from the former President, said: “We areconcerned about this feud between the President and former President Obasanjo. The President must watch it. It is dangerous for him to take on this man, who is very close to the northern oligarchy.
“Jonathan should rather speak with him as a father because of his second term ambition. This is not the time to start fighting people like Obasanjo.
“We all know that Jonathan’s popularity has waned. He should not make Obasanjo a hero because Nigerians have this belief that the President is not handling the security situation in the country well.
“The President is not popular inmajority of the states in the north and South-West. If he allows this the people in these areas will work against him andhis second term dream will remain in the pipeline for a long time. He should not think that votes from the South-East and South-South can give him asecond term ticket.
“It was this same Obasanjo whoappealed to restive members ofthe party at the Eagles Square when Jonathan picked the party’s presidential ticket.
“That time, the north was very angry that the party did not follow the zoning formula as enshrined in its constitution following the death of President Umaru Yar’Adua.”
However, both the National Secretary of the PDP, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, have said there was no problem betweenthe former President and Jonathan.
When contacted, Oyinlola said “the issue of Odi killings will not cause hostility between thetwo leaders of our party,”
Metuh, on his part, said both leaders were working together towards deepening democracy in Nigeria.
It will be recalled that PresidentJonathan during the media chatpenultimate week had faulted the attack on Odi community by Obasanjo, saying the action was not a solution to the problem.

Reps summon Okonjo-Iweala, Budget Office DG over Auditor-Gen’s allocation

ABUJA—House of Representatives’ Committee on Public Accounts has summoned Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Director-General of the Budget Office, Bright Okongwu, to explain poor allocation to the office of the Auditor-General of the Federation, AuGF.
The committee, in a bid to check paltry allocation to the AuGF Office, suggested that it was time an amendment to theconstitution was made to place the office on first line charge of the federation account.
The committee also turned down the allocation of N892.5 million to audit the proposed N4.9 trillion 2013 budget, adding that such poor budgetary allocation would render the operations of the Auditor-General’s office ineffective.
The AuGF, Mr. Samuel Ukura, had earlier in the meeting told the committee that his office had sought approval for the allocation of N5.2 billion to audit the 2013 budget, adding that the Ministry of Finance andthe Budget Office approved only N892.5 million.
Ukura explained that as a resultof financial incapacity, the accounts of several ministries, departments and agencies, MDAs, could not be audited in 2012.
He told the Solomon Adeola-ledcommittee that there was zero allocation to his office in respect of the auditing of the Federation Account for the year 2013.
The Minister of Finance, who is to appear with the Director-General, Budget Office of the Federation, Dr. Bright Okogwu, is also expected to explain why there was zero allocation in the2013 budget for the audit of the Federation Account.
The Auditor-General also told the Committee that in 2012, hisoffice “audited only 44 MDAs, leaving out 97 Foreign Missions, due to lack of funds.”
Members of the Public AccountsCommittee, who sought financial autonomy for the auditor’s office as they were surprised by revelations from the AuGF, took turns to lash at asystem that would frustrate theaudit of MDAs.
Pally Iriase, a member of the committee representing Edo State, said: “If you look at this budget of the AuGF, it shows how unserious we are about tackling corruption in this country.
“This budget ought to signpost our seriousness in tackling the issue of corruption headlong.”
, but the Ministry of Finance andthe Budget Office in their strange wisdom have decided that the best thing to do is to frustrate the office of the Auditor-General.”
In his contribution, Karimi Sunday(ACN-Kogi) observed that “there is a continuous attempt to frustrate and renderthe office of the Accountant-General redundant.
“They (Ministry of Finance and Budget Office) don’t want the office to do their work, but there is a need for this committee to perform its statutory role.”

Expected HIV vaccine

December 3, 2012 | 4:05 am
Editorial

AFTER nearly 30 years of desperately searching for solutions to the Human-Immunodeficiency Virus, HIV, the vermin that leads to the deadly Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, AIDS, the world may soon heave a sigh ofrelief, as real hope has been kindled of a possible vaccine that could, on a single dose, offer lifelong immunity to HIV/AIDS.
A Texas-based institute has applied for a patent to begin the production of the vaccine genetically engineered to provide immunity for life to potential HIV/AIDS sufferers. The vaccine – its name is still shielded from the public – is also said to have the potency toprovide relief for other infections.
It reportedly functions by preventing the replication of viruses when they enter the human body.
Since the potency of the HIV/AIDS virus is rooted on its ability to reproduce rapidly andspread within the body, thus eventually overwhelming the body’s natural resistance to infections, the full release of this vaccine into the open market could become the first real advancement in the war to eliminate the killer virus and save millions of lives.
The news is particularly welcome to Africans living in the sub-Saharan zones, where the scourge has taken the bulk of human casualties, robbing them of valuable manpower and resulting in millions of orphaned children. In time it will render anti-retroviral drugsuseless since the AVRs only slowdown the rate of infection and spread.
Even when this drug becomes widely available, the war on HIV/AIDS will only be halfway won. This drug, however, has no benefits for those who have already developed the terminal stage of the disease (full-blown AIDS). The concerted efforts thathave been going on, both on orthodox and traditional medical research should continue unabated.
Since this drug is, as yet, a preventive vaccine, it will take along time of cautious observation before people will wholeheartedly accept it as vaccine against AIDS.
Health authorities and advocacygroups should continue to prevail on Nigerians to adopt risk free sex practices. They should also ensure the vaccine is affordable. Availability of a vaccine should not be an invitation to the recklessness that promotes HIV/AIDS.
Nigerians should continue to observe safe sex measures that limited spread of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria in the past five years. We make these points because about 90 per cent of new infections in Nigeria and Africa are acquired through sexual activities.
Even when this vaccine becomes widely available to users, Nigerians should not see it as a substitute to healthy sexual practices.
The greatest weapons against HIV/AIDS are not condoms or vaccines. Desisting from unsafe sex practices and, use of sterilised metal objects bear more preventive prospects thanvaccines.

80% of fuel consumed in Benin Republic smuggled from Nigeria – IMF
Our Reporter November 2, 2012 1 Comment »
From ISAAC ANUMIHE, Abuja

International Monetary Fund (IMF), yesterday disclosed that 80 per cent of petroleum products consumed in Benin Republic are smuggled from Nigeria.

The fund, however, warned Nigeria against expansionary fiscal policies, in view of the uncertainty in the global economic scene, Presenting the Regional Economic Outlook for Sub-saharan Africa, IMF’sSenior Resident Representative, Nigeria, Mr Scott Rogers, said Nigeriamust take advantage of the current growth to strengthen her fiscal position by saving for the rainy day. He was of the view that early world economic recovery is not yet in sight. “The global economic outlook remains uncertain.

The context has continued to witness slowing growth, mostly marked in the advanced economies. The US housing prices remain depressed, and the nation’s weak economy is impacting negatively onmany other countries of the world because the US is an export destination of many countries of theworld.

“The US economy is recovering but the recovery is still weak. If the world economy remains weak, it will continue to affect countries of the world especially those with strong ties with the US and the Euro area which could actually go into recession.

Export growth in Sub-Sahara Africa has remained weak due to the weakening economies of the advanced countries,” he said. IMF further noted that the situation could be worse if by January, American President Barak Obama fails to reach a deal with the Congress to raise the deficit ceiling, as according to him.

“That will mean rise in tax rates andcut in government expenditure across board, which could further weaken the growth or even throw the economy into recession,” he said, while urging the Federal Government to come up with policies through which to save as much funds as possible, to avoid undue increase in government spending, and avoid a burst if oil prices crash.

For him, Nigerian economy stands the risk of being faced with lower crude oil prices due to weak global economy and that a high oil price benchmark, as being proposed by the National Assembly, could be detrimental to the economy. Rogers advised that the nation should generate fiscal surplus while oil prices are high and use it to build the nation’s reserves, instead of depleting the Excess Crude Account.

Workers, Gov Wamakko on warpath over flogging of PHCN workers
November 1, 2012 | 1:00 am
News

Electricity workers in the North-West Zone has given a seven-day ultimatum to Governor Magatakada Wamakko of Sokoto State within which to apologise for allegedly floggingtwo officials of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, in his office.

The electricity workers accused Wamakko of personally whipping Engr. Moses Osigwe, Business Manager of Gwiwa Business Unit of PHCN, and two other staff, Mallam Isyaku Daura, Officer II (Electrical) and Nuruddeen Mohammed, Staff l(Lines), after accusing them of being responsible for the failure of two SMVA transformers serving his home town, Wamakko.

In an earlier letter entitled Demand for Unreserved Apology and Payment of Compensation for Assault on Our Members, signed by the Assistant General Secretary of the electricity workers’ union in the zone, Mr. Moses Amedu, the union had alleged that Governor Wamakko personally beat the three officials before directing armed policemen attached to the Government House to continue with their torture.

The letter, with reference NUEE/AGS/NW/KD/201 2/120, dated October 31, 2012, said: “We are shocked beyond imagination to learn that on October 20, you invited the Business Manager and two Officers to your house, where you subjected them to inhuman treatment by personally whipping them mercilessly and then ordered their continuous flogging by the Mobile Policemen attached to your office.

“As the Chief Security Officer of the state, whom we are supposed to rely on for the security of the staff and equipment of PHCN in Sokoto State, you have betrayed our hope by this singular and unwarranted act.

“This action can be best described as a rampage and uncontrolled anger. Therefore, except you renew our hope and confidence and tender an unreserved public apology to the staff you have dehumanised, we can no longer guarantee the continuous service of our members in Sokoto State.

“You should also be prepared to pay compensation that will be sent to your office soon. Accordingly, one week is sufficient to do this.”

However, the one-week ultimatum given by the workers expired yesterday without Wamakko tendering the apology, prompting the union to ask
its members to embark on strike if the governor failed to pay compensation and tender an open apology for his action.

The union said: “We regret the inconveniences this unfortunate incident and subsequent action of the union may cause the good citizens of Sokoto State.”

The PHCN workers asked the people of state to hold their governor responsible for any eventuality.
