Cameroon should enjoy their oil rich Bakassi. The Bakassi people agreed to fight the Igbos. That is when they sold their birthright. |
Mr President would have told us the location of the houses and roads his govt constructed. The local governmnt autonomy issue was not even addressed to minimize state Governors looting competition. We are tired. This has become a routine. If i may advise, we are 150million Nigerians & our annual budget is running in 4.9+ trillions. Why cant we share dis money to individuals ?? |
Evry tin is to make sure that Nigeria moves forward. They should reduce his powers. Its becoming unbearable. |

2013 Budget presentation: Jonathan bows to NASS ABUJA – STRONG indications emerged yesterday that President Goodluck Jonathan may have bowed to pressure by members of the National Assembly who declared that they were not ready for the Joint presentation of the 2013 budget. The President who had last week written to the Senate President for the presentation of the budget this week Thursday, will have to shift it for another week. President Jonathan in his letter which was read on Tuesday by Senate President David Mark read, ‘’I write to crave your kindindulgence to grant me the slotof 12.00 noon on Thursday, October 4th, 2012 to enable meformally address a joint session of the National Assembly on the2013 Budget. ‘’While thanking the Distinguished Senators of the Federal Republic for the consistency of their support, please accept, Distinguished Senate President the assurancesof my highest consideration.” Answering question from Vanguard yesterday, the SpecialAdviser to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Joy Emodi who disclosed that the joint presentation will take place in the next two weeks, explained that the change in the date became imperative because members of the House of Representatives had last week suspended plenary for one week to enable them go on oversight functions. It will be recalled that membersof the House of Representativeshad last week Thursday made good its threat not to have anything to do with the 2013 budget until it was fully satisfied with the implementation of the 2012 budget by the executive just as they vowed that they will not grant the president audience topresent the 2013 budget. |
Those around Jonathan ‘stink’– Reps ABUJA – MEMBERS of the Federal House of Representatives, yesterday, advised President Goodluck Jonathan to show the willingness and sincerity to fight corruption, insecurity and carry everybody along if he must to succeed. Apparently reacting to his 52nd anniversary speech, the Reps, who were unanimous in their reactions, stated that the President should purge himself first and listen to constructive criticism to move Nigeria forward. Chairman House Committee on Media, Zakari Mohammed, said: “Weare ready to support him provided there is willingness and sincerity onhis side. “I have said it before that governance cannot be done in isolation of other arms of government and we have been supporting him in all spheres. All we want is sincerity of purpose.” In his contribution, Uzo Nkem-Abonta, representing Abia State said: “The President should first and foremost purge himself of all those that are seen to be corrupt. “There is corruption everywhere, particularly in the civil service. The President may not be corrupt but most people around him stink of corruption. “Look at the stench from the fuel subsidy probe and the rot in that sector. You will weep for this nationeveryday. All we are saying is that the President should exhibit leadership by example. “EFCC should be given teeth to bite, not to negotiate for plea bargains or allow corrupt elements in the society the option of fine.” Abiodun Faleke, representing Ikeja Federal Constituency, said: “Nigerians are becoming impatient everyday. Let Mr. President display exemplary leadership qualities by fighting corruption in the true sense of it. “The oil sector is enmeshed in corruption and security is in abeyance. Let him lead the way by listening to constructive criticism at all times so that Nigeria can move forward. “If he (President) wants to write hisname in gold, he should tell Nigerians his mind on whether he would stay in office for one term and combat all these maladies headlong to make Nigeria move forward.” |
This is the kind of people we want if truly this is what he did and he is doing. Nigerian big men should learn. Some times, i wonder if big men belong to powerful secret cult that tells them not to help people. It's very disgusting. |
Face-off looms over Bakassi, as Senate reclaims peninsula Our Reporter September 27, 2012 6 •Lawmakers reject ICJ ruling, ask Jonathan to appeal Another face-off is imminent between the Presidency and the Senate over the ceding of the Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroun. For the second time in 24 hours, Senate had attacked Aso Rock on critical national matters. In a race to beat the October 10 deadline for the final ceding of the peninsula, Senate has commenced proceedings to appeal the International Court of Justice (ICJ) judgment. The Upper Legislative Chamber yesterday passed a resolution urging the Federal Government to invoke Article 61 of the ICJ Statute to appeal the ruling in the interest of Nigerians in the affected areas, including Bakassi. Senate argued that the Green Tea Agreement (GTA) which ceded Bakassi to Cameroun was never domesticated by the Fifth National Assembly as required by section 12 of the 1999 Constitution. Senators said yesterday that because the GTA was not given legal backing by the then National Assembly, the hand-over is null and void. Nigeria, during the Obasanjo administration, ceded Bakassi to Cameroun in 2002. To underscore the seriousness of thematter, Senate President David Marksaid he will write a personal letter to President Goodluck Jonathan and urge him to hasten the appeal. But in an address at the United Nations in New York, U.S. on Tuesday, President Jonathan reiterated that Nigeria would abide by the ICJ ruling on Bakassi. Regardless, emotions ran high in the Senate chambers yesterday when memberscontributed to the Bakassi debate. Leading the debate, Deputy Senate Leader Abdul Ningi, noted that new facts have emerged after the ICJ ruling which were not available before the first court proceeding coupled with the fact that the hand-over “was executed without a referendum as enshrined by the United Nations. “Nigeria has never domesticated the GTA…The 1999 Constitution still includes Bakassi and there is no reference on the ceding…If Bakassi is inhabited by Hausa/Fulani, this would never havehappened. If Bakassi was inhabited by the Yoruba, this would never have happened. In fact, if Bakassi were inhabited by even the Ijaw, this would never have happened. “If government’s problem is money, weare ready to contribute to fund the legal battle.” Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba seconded the motion. He drew the attention of the Upper House to the illegalities perpetrated during the Bakassi hand-over and passionately pleaded with the Senate to ensure justice, which was denied them during the Obasanjo administration, is done for the region. “Cross River State Government is the immediate victimof injustice and the high-handedness of this issue of Bakassi. In 2007, we urged the Federal Government to tarry awhile and we,myself and Senator Bassey Ewa-Henshaw sponsored three motions to that effect, but it was not heeded. “Bakassi was handed over with an unelected governor in place and I asked the question: What was the hurry? “Bakassi’s judgment was the fastest that was implemented. There are judgments from the ICJ as far back as the 1930’s that had not been implemented; so, why the hurry with Bakassi? “Cross River State lost 76 oil wells to Akwa Ibom State. Bakassi went in one direction and the oil wells went in another direction. Cross River did not cede Bakassi. Bakassi was ceded by the Federal Government in spite of CrossRiver. “We demand protection as people of Nigeria. If the Nigerian state cannot protect Cross River, let the Senate, to which Ibelong, protect Cross River.” Information, Media and Public Affairs Committee Chairman, Enyinnaya Abaribe, wondered, “which country willingly gives out its own portion to another country?” To the Chairman of the Rules and Business Committee, Ita Enang, Nigeria has no time to waste on the appeal, adding that the matter is now between two countries.”Obasanjo sent the GTA to the National Assembly for ratification but no work was done on it. Section 12 of the Constitution stipulates that the GTA must be ratified and endorsed. This is not a matter between one state and another state. This is a matter between Nigeria and Cameroun.” Minority Leader, Sen. George Akume shed more light on the issue when he informed the chamber that it was not only Bakassi that was given out to Nigerian neighbours. “It’s not only Cross River that was affected; Borno,Adamawa, Taraba and Benue were ceded amidst protestations from theNational Council of State” To SenatorHeineken Lokpobiri, Nigeria could take immediate action while the appeal goes on. “Let’s go back to Bakassi and repossess the place. Nigeria has not legally ceded Bakassi…” In his comments on the motion, Mark promised that the Senate will protect all Nigerians, adding that the National Assembly will champion appeal of the ICJ ruling. “Bakassi shouldn’t be ceded to Cameroun; going on appeal shouldn’t be a line of action that we should neglect. |

[quote author=manny4life]Very unfortunate that parties in Nigeria resort to this wasteful bickering. Jonathan may not have issued a response (we do not know,), and YES I won't condone it because there were victims, however, calling him a trainee president is just ridic. Do you go on some special presidential training and certification to become a president? IMO, I just think ACN is just seeking attention and are trying to capitalize or should I say take advantage of the situation. ACN is as bad as PDD, perfect case of pot calling kettle black. Ur post is pointless. When someone is saying what we know that it is true, u are here giving us irrational lecture. Am not a party member. But believe it or leave it, ACN is saying the clear truth. This is a national disaster. When BP oil sinked in Gulf of mexico, have u forgoten so early what Obama did & d statement he issued immedietely they brief him? Stop being partisan in national issues. |

FG orders Berger, RCC, to free Lokoja-Abuja Road from flooding September 25, 2012 | 10:00 am News The Federal Government on Monday directed Julius Berger and two other construction companies to free the submerged Lokoja-Abuja Road from flooding within three days. The Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, gave the directive in Lokoja when he paid a courtesy call on Gov. IdrisWada. Onolememen described the flood as a disaster that deeply touched President Goodluck Jonathan because it affected key national structures and threatened the link between the northern and southern parts of the country. “We are here on the behalf of President Goodluck Jonathan; he has been deeply touched by the sufferings of Nigerians affected by the flood; it is a national emergency. “It has touched on key national infrastructure because the Abuja-Lokoja highway accountsfor 70 per cent of traffic between the north and south’’, Onolememen said. He said he also brought the managing directors of the threeconstruction companies; Julius Berger, RCC and Dantata and Sawoe and their teams to assess the impact and address the situation. According to him, the level of flood currently devastating the state has not been witnessed inthe past 100 years. “We have additional two-metrerise in water level; we have conducted air reconnaissance and we are sure to redress the logjam within the next few days.’’ In her remark, Hajia Hadiza Mailafia, the Minister of Environment, who accompanied Onolememen, said the flooding was unfortunate and urged the people to always obey simple environmental laws. “Our situation is worsened because we do not obey environment rules, this is traumatising but our coming will bring succour,’’ she said. Barack Obama to warn UN over Iran nuclear weapons President Obama's appearance comes six weeks before the presidential election President Barack Obama is to tell the UN General Assembly the US will "do what we must" to stop Iran acquiring nuclear weapons, officials say. The Middle East is set to dominate the summit in New York and the president will give one of the opening speeches. In an address six weeks before the US presidential election, he is expected to say that a nuclear-armed Iran "is not a challenge that can be contained". He is also set to condemn the violence that erupted over an anti-Islam video. In a tribute to the US ambassador toLibya murdered in Benghazi, President Obama will challenge the UN to affirm that "our future will be determined by people like Christopher Stevens, and not by his killers", according to excerpts from Tuesday's speech released by the White House. "Today, we must declare that this violence and intolerance has no place among our United Nations," hewill say. The UN General Assembly is likely to be dominated by the recent protestsacross the Muslim world in response to the US-made video mocking the Prophet Muhammad, as well as Iran's nuclear programme and the 18-month conflict in Syria. 'Fake regime' In his address, the president will vow that "the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," with the backing of "a coalition of countries" holding Tehran accountable. Analysis Jonathan Marcus BBC Diplomatic Correspondent President Barack Obama's commentson Iran's nuclear programme are in large part a re-statement of what hehas said before. Last March he noted that he would"take no options off the table" whenit came to preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. "I do not have a policy of containment," he said. Some six months later the message is little different. It falls short of the clearly defined red lines apparently demanded by Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. But Mr Netanyahu's insistence came close to prompting a crisis in US-Israel relations. He may now have to be content with stating his view of the potential red lines in his own UN speech. Mr Obama is clearly not going to announce publicly a trigger for war with Iran. Although the White House said the president's address should not be considered a campaign speech, it follows critical remarks about his foreign policy from Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. His presidential rival condemned Mr Obama's description of the murder of Mr Stevens and three other Americans as "bumps in the road". He has also castigated him for not taking time out to hold talks on Iranduring the summit with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu. Mr Obama has rejected the Israeli leader's calls for Washington to set Tehran "red lines". Mr Netanyahu has recently appearedon US television to press for a tougher line on Iran, and he will take the same message to the General Assembly on Thursday. Tehran says its nuclear programme is for civilian purposes. On the eve of the assembly, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told a UN meeting that Israel was a"fake regime", prompting Israel's UNambassador, Ron Prosor, to walk out. 'Extremely bad' Syria's 18-month conflict is not formally on the General Assembly's agenda but it is likely to be addressed by several speakers on the opening day, including SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon, French President Francois Hollande and Qatari emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani. UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi has just visited Damascus and refugee campsin Jordan and Turkey Mr Hollande, in his first appearance at the assembly, is also expected to call for backing for an international force to be sent to the West African state of Mali to help dislodge Islamist militants who have taken over the north of the country. The UN Security Council has been unable to reach agreement on the Syria crisis and on Monday UN envoyLakhdar Brahimi warned that the situation was "extremely bad and getting worse". While he did not have a full plan, he said he had "a few ideas". Mr Brahimi has just visited Damascus aswell as refugee camps in neighbouring Jordan and Turkey. The BBC's Barbara Plett says that diplomats have played down expectations for Mr Brahimi's mission, with no sign of fundamental divisions on the councilbeing bridged. |
US professor gets life in prison for killing co-workers Tue Sep 25, 2012 12:27AM GMT A Harvard-educated biology professor(Amy Bishop) was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Monday after being convicted of shooting colleagues at a faculty meeting, killing three and wounding three others . The jury deliberated for about 20 minutes before convicting Amy Bishop in the Feb. 2010 shooting rampage at the University of Alabama in Hunstville . " She is shattered beyond belief," attorney Roy Miller said. Miller said that Bishop has often expressed great remorse to the victims and their families . Colleagues believed Bishop, who allegedly pulled the gun from her purse to start shooting, was angry that the school had denied her tenure. NBC News HIGHLIGHTS On Sept. 11, Bishop pleaded guilty to killing three people and wounding three others. By doing so,she avoided a possible death sentence with the plea and instead faces life imprisonment. NBC News Investigator Charlie Gray and Professor Debra Moriarty were the only witnesses to testify during the brief trial Monday for Amy Bishop. Bishop already has pleaded guilty toavoid the death penalty, but state law requires a trial because it was a capital charge. CBS News Moriarty testified that Amy Bishop sat unusually silent during a nearly hour-long faculty meeting in February 2010, during which discussions ran from a spring open house to plans for the following fall.CBS News Moriarity said she glanced down at apiece of paper on the table. "And there was a loud bang," she said. CBS News Moriarity added that more shots followed in quick succession without Bishop ever saying a word. Moriarity said she was looking directly at Bishop when she shot Professor Maria Ragland Davis, who was killed instantly while still seated at the table. CBS News Moriarity dove under the table for safety and tried to grab Bishop's legs, but the woman stepped out of her grasp. "I was saying, Stop Amy, stop. Don't do this. I've helped you before, I'll help you again." telegraph.co.uk She added Bishop pointed the gun at her and pulled the trigger, but nothing happened. She said Bishop continued trying to shoot her in a hall outside but the gun had jammed. telegraph.co.uk Moriarity said she stepped back into the room alone, slammed the door and saw colleagues bleeding and dying all around her. She described a coworker using napkins to try to stop bleeding from the head of Joseph Leahy, who survived and was in the courtroom. kentucky.com |

Ahmadinejad says Israel has 'no roots' in Middle East Sep 24, 2012 9:49 AM EDT Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad didn't need to make it to a UN podium to make news after coming to New York for the world body's General Assembly, telling reporters Israel has "no roots" in the Middle East and that Iran doesn't take the threat of an Israeli attack seriously. The comments came a day after UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met with Ahmadinejad to warn him about the potentially harmful consequences of inflammatory rhetoric "from various countries in the Middle East" and "the grave regional implications of the worsening situation in Syria and underlined the devastating humanitarian impact," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said. Ahmadinejad is scheduled to addressthe full gathering on Wednesday. If Ahmadinejad's comments, made to reporters in New York ahead of the 67th meeting of the General Assembly, are any indication, he won't be holding back on Wednesday. Iran finds itself at odds with much of the entire world as it pursues a nuclear weapon and ratchets up its rhetoric against Israel, but Ahmadinejad does not seem to be intent on displaying diplomacy. Ahmadinejad said Iran has been around for thousands of years, Reuters reports, but Israel has existed for only 60 or 70. "They (Israel) have no roots there in history," Ahmadinejad added. "They do not even enter the equation for Iran." Israel is believed to be considering a pre-emptive strike to take out Iran's burgeoning nuclear weapons capabilities, but Ahmadinejad scoffed at the prospect of an attack on his country. "Fundamentally we do not take seriously the threats of the Zionists," he said. "We have all the defensive means at our disposal and we are ready to defend ourselves." Ahmadinejad has previously taken to the UN podium to defend Iran's nuclear program, attack Israel and the west and even question whetherMuslim terrorists were behind the 9/11 attacks. Last year and in other years, western diplomats have walked out en masse as Ahmadinejad spoke. In his speech at the UN's high-level meeting on the rule of law on Monday, Ahmadinejad once again defended Iran's nuclear program, asserting that its enrichment project is for peaceful purposes and that it was not too late for dialogue with the United States to resolve differences. He also said Iran is neutral about the Syrian civil war, and denied it is providing weapons or training to the government of President Bashar Assad. Christopher DeVito, executive director of the advocacy group Iran180, said the organization will have a protest at Dag HammarskjoldPlaza on Wednesday when Ahmadinejad is scheduled to speak. Iran180 wants a change in Iran's nuclear and human rights policies. Tension between some Arab states and Israel is perhaps even more raw this year than in years past. Aside from Iran's nuclear threat, instability in the region, brought on by democratic uprisings, deadly protests generated by an anti-Islamic video and the ongoing civil war in Syria are all weighing heavily on the world body. Ki-moon predicted that the ministerial session, which starts Tuesday, will be among the busiest ever, reflecting "the tumultuous time in which we live - a time of turmoil and transition." It is also taking place "against a backdrop of widespread violence linked to intolerance," he said. Ahead of the opening ministerial session, which President Barack Obama will address, the U.N. chief has invited leaders to the first high-level meeting on the rule of law on Monday, hoping they "will send a strong signal to the world's people that they are serious about establishing well-functioning institutions and delivering justice." The Syrian conflict has bitterly divided the most powerful membersof the Security Council, paralyzing the only U.N. body that can impose global sanctions and authorize military action. Russia, Syria's key protector, and China, have vetoed three Western-backed resolutions aimed at pressuring Assad to stop the violence and start political talks with opponents of his family's 40-year dictatorship who began demonstrating against his regime 18months ago. The Associated Press contributed to this report. |
Military tech can monitor all worldmedia at the press of a button Sep 20, 2012 12:30 PM EDT From an ordinary computer, a Raytheon system can monitor television broadcasts from all over the world, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week -- and instantly translate and analyze them. It's amazing technology, stuff deployed operationally since 2004 by the Department of Defense for a variety of purposes, including open-source intelligence, information operations, public affairsand PsyOps. Available through the General Services Administration, it does not require any hardware setup, software installation, or onsite administration or maintenance. Could it have anticipated the escalating negative sentiment towards Americans linked to the foreign media coverage of the anti-Islam film "Innocence of Muslims" -- and perhaps helped protect U.S. embassies and interests abroad? Raytheon's BBN Broadcast Monitoring System automatically captures foreign media and deploys state of the art technology to translate, transcribe and analyze those video and audio streams in real time. It can spare a human someof the tedious and time consuming work by automatically sifting through the vast volume of foreign language news. "Machines are good at looking for things and humans are good at analyzing ... [it's the] perfect bionic combination," explained program director Prem Natarajan, head of speech and language processing at Raytheon BBN Technologies. "The machine does what it's good at and the human does what it's good at." Rather than the old school approach, analysts can use the Raytheon system to search topics, receiving back a list in chronological order of worldwide opinion as seen through media coverage. Taking the recent backlash against Americans linked to "Innocence of Muslims" -- An amateur film made inthe U.S. that has outraged the Muslim world -- technology like BBN Broadcast Monitoring could have been programmed to hunt for references to the inflammatory video in foreign media. Using the system's watchlists and alerts, it would automatically identify broadcasts referring to the video and therefore help build a picture of trending coverage and hotspots where violence against Americans might erupt. On July 1, the video was first posted online; Arab TV stations in a number of countries soon began covering it. The religious Egyptian TV channel al-Nas broadcast scenes on Sept. 8, and a clip dubbed into Arabic was then posted online. Hundreds of thousands of viewers watched it in mere days. Ultimately, four Americans including Ambassador J Christopher Stevens, were killed in an attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya. Reports have linked the attack to reaction to the video, as well as terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda. On Monday, the Lebanese Shia movement's Hezbollah leader appeared in public for the first time since December 2011 to denounce the video. Last Friday, Sunni militants in Tripoli, clashed with police and set fire to American fast food outlets. How Does It Work? On the computer screen, the user's view of the BBN Broadcast Monitoring System shows a transcript in both the original language and English. The system automatically transcribes the real-time audio stream and translates it into English, even punctuating appropriately. Both the transcript and translation are searchable and synchronized to the video. It also automatically recognizes entities such as people and places, further enhancing accuracy and enabling advanced analysis. The interface allows users to quickly search for specific spoken content in the video archive up to one year of broadcasts through keyword queriesin English or the source language. Search terms are highlighted in the results with an image thumbnail, theoriginal language transcript and an English translation. Clicking on a search result jumps the user directly to the streaming video where the search term was mentioned. Users can save searches in a"watchlist" that continuously monitors incoming video for matches to search criteria. The system automatically adds results tothe watchlist as they are broadcast and alerts the user as new matches occur. Watchlists can be filtered by date, user and topic, so users view only items of interest to them. In the case of the anti-Islam video, the watchlist could hunt for references to "Innocence of Muslims"and identify where they appear. The system is also very good at identifying relationships between individuals and building biographic or entity profiles. Currently, ten languages are available. In addition to Spanish and French, these include some of the most difficult to master such as Modern Standard Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Farsi, Bahasa Indonesia, Hindi and Urdu. With this technology, users with no foreign language skills can get the gist of a broadcast and triage enormous volumes of media, freeingup skilled linguists to focus on other critical tasks. |
Stroke forces Volvo chief executive to take a month off Volvo has admitted it is struggling to establish dealerships in China The chief executive of the Chinese owned car company Volvo is temporarily standing down from his post for a month, after suffering a mild stroke. Stefan Jacoby, 54, is handing the reins over to Jan Gurander, the chief financial officer, who will serve as the acting chief executive. The Zhejiang Geely owned Volvo hasadmitted that it is struggling to build up its retail operation in China. Volvo cars are currently imported to China from factories overseas. Volvo has high hopes that China will account for about a quarter of its global sales by 2020. Last year the automotive manufacturer sold almost 450,000 cars across the world, but wants that to increase to 800,000 by 2020. Former VW man Stefan Jacoby has been the chief executive at Volvo since August 2010, joining the company after being the president and chief executive of Volkswagen's American arm. "I was lucky that it was a mild stroke," Jacoby said, "I am currently experiencing limited movement abilities in my right arm and, to some extent, also in my right leg." He is determined to return to work soon. "Now I will focus on resting and exercising, in order to get back to work as soon as possible," he said. The iconic Swedish car brand was bought in 2010 by the Chinese carmaker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group for $1.8bn, from Ford Motor Company. |
