. It is unfortunate you are judging Atiku and comparing him with Jonathan who has been a President. Your comparison is unhealthy and unreasonable. Wait until Atiku becomes the President before judging him.

Politics / Re: Army Breaks Silence On Fatal Ambush Of Soldiers by Forester45(m): 6:03am On Nov 24, 2018
The Nigerian army has finally broken its silence on the attacks on Nigerian soldiers, the most recent in Metele, Borno state.

The deadly attack on the 157 task force battalion stationed in Metele left scores of soldiers dead while some are still missing.

Some estimates put the casualty figure at over 100, but the army while commenting on Friday, failed to divulge the death toll.

The army’s statement read: “The attention of the NA has been drawn to several social media, print, electronic and online publications about the recent attack on 157 Task Force Battalion at Metele. Whilst it is true that there was an attack on the location on 18 November 2018, it has however, become necessary to correct several misinformation being circulated with regards to this unfortunate event.

“It is important for the public to note that the NA has laid down procedures for reporting incidents that involve its personnel who fall casualty in action. Out of respect for the families of our gallant troops, the NOKs are first notified before any form of public information so as to avoid exacerbating the grief family members would bear, were they to discover such from unofficial sources.

“Furthermore, it suffices to observe that several social media, print and online publications have been brandishing false casualty figures as well as circulating various footages of old and inaccurate BHT propaganda videos and alluding same to be the attack on 157 Task Force Battalion. Whilst it is understandable how such misinformation can spread in this era of social media frenzy, the spurious circulation of some of these videos only contribute to further propagate the propaganda intent of the terrorists; to misinform the populace and portray themselves as what they are not. So far, the situation is that the location is under control as reinforcing units have been able to repel the terrorists and stabilize the situation.

“The NA sincerely wishes to thank the various arms of government, MDAs and sister security agencies that have stood with her in these trying times; by commiserating with the families of the fallen heroes who have paid the supreme price for the defence of our dearly beloved country. The necessary support being given the NA by the Federal Government and the goodwill of the Nigerian populace will undoubtedly continue to spur the NA towards the ultimate defeat of the highly degraded BHTs.”

Following the latest attack, President Muhammadu Buhari dispatched Mansur Dan-Ali, minister of defence, for an emergency meeting with Chadian President Idris Deby.

Nigerian senate has failed Nigerians

What's their business with ASUU.
I'd love to be reminded one meaningful law they've passed.

Under their watch, IPOB was proscribed.
Under their watch, same-sex relationship was outlawed.
This senate is the worst in Nigeria's history.

Please be guided. Your write up sounds imbecilic. Senators may be useless as u said but not always. This time, they are correct. ASUU has tried for Nigerians. If not ASUU, no one will attend University because government doesn't mean well for us.

Visit Covenant University and check their fees. Average Nigerians can't afford it. The Senators are right this time.

I am tempted to say that this Prof. is highly misinformed. First: let me say this without fear or favour that the projects listed by this Prof. was born out of ASUU past strikes, if not, he wouldn't have seen one to mention.

Secondly: as for schools fees, majority of Nigerian students who are relatively poor are in Federal and State Universities due to affordable fees. If fresh students in Osun State University pay N253,000, it was not on gunpoint. There are several better choice. In addition, ASUU Osun State chapter are the ones to address it.

Concerning the Education Bank, there are documents indicating that the said bank existed in the past but abruptly collapsed due to its unimplementable tendency. The bank went on strike but could not return.

How can a student access a loan of One Million Naira (1,000,000.00) in Education Bank when he/she can not pay back after graduation. No job waiting for graduated students. Please Prof., how will they pay back?

There is no other language understands by FG other than strike. We have irresponsible leaders.

Ngozi-Okonjo-Iweala
Okonjo-Iweala Still “In Office”. Photo: file

When one continues to forge ahead on a glorious pedestal in spite of detracting fellows who conjure snags, it becomes worthy of discussion, praise and emulation.

This is the case with Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former Minister of Finance of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, whose profile continues to soar abroad despite undue criticisms from some disenchanted fellows.

History is awash with relics of public officials who sank into redundancy, oblivion and infamy after exit from office. I can give a list both home and abroad but I don’t have to. You know some of them. Some even lobby and fight tooth and nail to gain relevance even at the detriment of losing the trust reposed in them. But this is not the case for Okonjo-Iweala.

Despite leaving office over a year ago, after the inauguration of the present administration, and amidst allegations from die-hard critics, she is still “in office” with an acclivitous portfolio enamoured with new appointments and awards – internationally.

From being appointed as Chair of the 28-member Board of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation, GAVI, to joining Lazard, as Senior Advisor, our dear former Minister remains a gem. It’s no wonder many Nigerians have called on the present administration countless times to employ her expertise.

This also was rebuffed by the detracting camp but the proof of the pudding, they say, is in the eating and wisdom is identified by her children. My question is: if the false allegations are really true, did she hoodwink the international bodies that have been endeared to her because of her track-record? The records are bare; Okonjo-Iweala stands out.

Recently, she joined 10 other key persons on the board of the international advisory panel of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), a multilateral international Development Bank. By her appointment, she, alongside the appointees, would provide impartial, objective and independent advice to the President of the Asian Bank.

And just when we thought her portfolio could take no more, she bagged two national awards from Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire.

I urge every public official and anyone reading this to aim for such career pedigree. You can become so outstanding that even after you have exited your office, you still remain “in office”.

Strike: APC berates FG’s strategy to ‘blackmail’ ASUU
October 17, 2013by Our correspondent
The All Progressives Congress has described as “a cheap and ludicrous strategy” the plan by the Federal Government to use market women, religious leaders and even students to put pressure on the Academic Staff Union of Universities to call off its strike.
The party noted that plan is being hatched “without resolving the issues that caused the strike in the first instance.”
In a statement in Lagos on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the strike, which is now in its fourth month, would have ended by now if the Federal Government had pursued its negotiations with ASUU “with half the energy it has been using to rally various groups to protest against the union.”
It described as “particularly ridiculous the crowd-for-hire protest in Abuja on Monday by the so-called National Market Women Association, in which their leader vowed to chase lecturers out of Nigeria” and replace them with “jobless Nigerians.”
APC said, “This infantile statement by the leader of the apparently misguided market women is the most irresponsible statement that anyone has made on the long-drawn ASUU strike, and it is a shame that the government is the instigator of such nonsense.
“While indeed there are millions of jobless Nigerians, is it just any jobless Nigerian who can be a university teacher? How does President Goodluck Jonathan, himself a former university teacher, feel about those apparently hired by his administration treating university teachers with so much disrespect? Even if the government succeeds in forcing the lecturers back to the classroom, can it force them to teach effectively?”

ASSU strike: Okunnu charges FG to speed up dialogue
October 15, 2013by Bukola Adebayo

The President of the Ansaru-Ud-deen Society of Nigeria, Olufemi Okunnu (SAN), has called on the Federal Government to conclude its dialogue with the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
Okunnu, in a statement to felicitate with Islamic faithful on the Eid-El-Kabir celebration on Monday, said the dialogue should be extended to other unions in the nation’s tertiary institutions.
He said, “I want to appeal strongly to the Federal Government and ASUU to conclude the dialogue they are engaged in quickly to resolve the lingering problem. The strike has caused the nation enough embarrassment and should not continue beyond now. These young men and women are our tomorrow. We should stop playing politics with their lives so that we can have lasting peace in the country.”

Onlytruth: I am a STRONG supporter of No Work No Pay in this case.
Unbridled unionism should be proscribed in Nigeria's university system.
ASUU should be proscribed the same way Egypt proscribed the Moslem Brotherhood and confiscated their assets.
ASUU's assets (whatever is left of it) should be seized, sold, and their proceeds used to pay students some form of bursary as compensation/remediation for breached contract.

the planmaker: it is true that Nigerian universities are poorly funded, hence they lack basic teaching and learning facilities. but the major rot in our institutions has little to do with funding. lack of ethics, discipline and standard among those who administer education in Nigeria has been our biggest undoing. the lecturers who collect money in exchange for marks, or demand sexual favours from female students are all ASUU members. they are responsible for the brain drain in the country. so if ASUU is actually fighting for a better educational system, they should start by cleaning their own house first. even with pour funding, if lecturers are determined to teach and do what is right, we ll produce employable graduates ......I think this ASUU strike is all about "earned allowances" nothing more

. You seriously needs prayers. In as much as i agreed with u that some lecturers needs repentance of heart & sanity, i disagree with u that their main target is earned allowance. Based on ur sick opinion, FG should nt fund universities until lecturers work on themselves in their attitudinal display. U forgot that a problem solved can help in solving the other. A well funded university with good labouratories, quality libraries, well biult hostels, lecture theaters and above all, good and conducive environment has d ability to reduce corruption. U dont knw dat one. It may interest u to know dat wht is fueling coruption in Nigeria is absence of Mortgage facilities which Mr Goodluck has refused to impliment.

Sincere 9gerian:
Deceitful write up. FG has already released N100billion as special intervention fund for infrastructural upgrade in the universities. And that is for this year alone and in addition to existing funding. Next year, the special intervention fund will be increased further. What ASUU is still demanding now is the issue of ALLOWANCES. They claim their allowances is N87billion but FG has already giving them N30billion. But ASUU is not satisfied with the N30billion. Lets stay with the FACTS. Its now all about allowances of our self-servicing and lazy lecturers.

SAY NO to selfish and lazy ASUU and their self-serving strike.
Please let us be sincere to ourselves. 100billion released by FG, is it the FG/ASUU 2009 agreement?. Is 30billion FG/ASUU 2009 agreement?? Not even all the lecturers are entitled to the earned allowance. Unless you are still advocating for students to keep paying for projects topic approvals and supervision, you had better plead with FG to honor the agreement he freely signed not on gun point. Or perhaps you still wants the lecturers to embark on another strike by mid next year? Let it be settled ones and for all. Help save the future of your unborn children/grand children. They will ask you where you are when the government was rubbishing the tertiary institutions, and you will not know what to say.
