Daily Post Nigeria HOMENEWSPOLITICSMETROSPORTENTERTA The National Judicial Council (NJC) has approved the appointments of 33 heads of courts in 11 states. This was contained in a statement on Thursday by NJC Director of Information, Soji Oye. He explained that the Council considered the list of candidates presented by its Interview Committee during its meeting which held on Tuesday and Wednesday. It read: “NJC recommends appointment of (6) Heads of Court, and (26) Twenty-six Judicial Officers for State High Courts and one (1) Kadi, Sharia Court of Appeal; “The National Judicial Council under the Chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Honourable Dr. Justice I. T. Muhammad CFR, at its Meeting of 17th and 18th December, 2019, considered the list of candidates presented by its Interview Committee and resolved to recommend to the Governors of Anambra, Kebbi, Cross River, Zamfara, Ogun, Osun, Rivers, Imo, Sokoto, Ekiti and Niger States, Thirty-three (33) successful candidates for appointment as Heads of Courts and other Judicial Officers in Nigeria. How I bought $9.8m from ECOWAS staff, Bureau de Change Operator revealed... The trial of Mohammed Dangana, a staff of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, Commission continued on Monday before Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja with the third witness, Adedeji Jide Adelabu, a bureau de change operator telling the court that he purchased dollars to the tune of $9.8 million from the defendant. Dangana, an executive assistant to the Financial Controller, ECOWAS Commission Secretariat Abuja, is under prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on a 15-count charge, bordering on criminal diversion of funds, misappropriation and money laundering to the tune of over N587.7million. According to Adelabu all the naira payments made for the purchase of the estimated $9.8 million were done at the agreed rates to the various accounts provided by the defendant, adding the payments were dully confirmed received as instructed, with the dollar proceeds given to them accordingly. The witness gave details of some of the transactions involving the defendant to the tune of $1 million on June 30, 2016, and another transaction of $1 million on July 4, 2019, at the prevailing rate of N347 to a dollar. ALSO READ: EFCC investigating over N200bn from Zamfara ex-gov, Yari’s administration Adelabu added that other transactions were done afterwards and that in total, an approximate sum of $9.8 million was purchased and all payments were made as directed by the defendant. When asked about his relationship with Cactus Facility Management Company, into which several million were paid, he said he had no relationship outside the instructions given to make payments to the account. The witness told the court that payments were made into various accounts, including Dashad & Co, Rite Option Ventures Ltd, Crossgains Trading and Investment Ltd, Cactus Facility Management Company, Saldano Chambers, ECOWAS account and others. The matter was adjourned until December 17, 2019, for continuation of trial. |
EFCC investigating over N200bn from Zamfara ex-gov, Yari’s administration The Sokoto Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday stated it is currently investigating a total sum of N200 billion in Zamfara State in relation to the former-governor, Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari’s administration. Sokoto Zonal Head of the EFCC, Abdullahi Lawal revealed this as the commission handed over Fifty Three (53) Tricycles (Keke Napep) recovered from a contractor to the Zamfara State government. “[EFCC] is currently investigating over 60 cases from Zamfara state in relation to the past administration. These include cases against individuals, public and private organizations as well as government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs). The total sum involved is over 200 billion Naira. Several bank accounts connected to fraudulent activities have been frozen by the Commission”, Lawal said. According to a press statement by the Commission’s Head, Media & Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, Lawal also said the fear of EFCC’s investigation has compelled several contractors, who collected billions of naira from Zamfara state but failed to deliver, to return to site. ALSO READ: EFCC arraigns man for impersonating Fashola The recovered Tricycles was sequel to investigation on a contract that was initially awarded to Kynco and Wadatau at a total cost of N1.2 billion for the supply of 1000 Tricycles. Investigation revealed that only 947 units were supplied before the expiration of the tenure of the immediate past administration in Zamfara state. In his response, the Secretary to the Zamfara State Government who received the 53 recovered Tricycles on behalf of Zamfara state government, Alhaji Bala Bello Maru commended the Commission for its achievements so far in the zone. He assured the Commission of the state government’s readiness to give necessary support to it at all times. “We will provide the list of those going to benefit from these Tricycles and as well invite EFCC to come and witness the distribution”, he said.
