United States government has said President Muhammadu Buhari has a lot of work to do to end the ongoing Boko Haram attacks in the country. This was stated at a press briefing on Wednesday by the US Department of State. According to the US Department of State’s spokesman, John Kirby, the US will do what it can to help the Federal Government. He added that the exact amount of money the US government will commit to the fight against terrorism in Nigeria was not available at the time he was fielding questions from journalists. Kirby said, “We want to do what we can to help President Buhari as he begins to form his government and set the priorities and goals for his administration. Certainly security support with respect to counter-terrorism, particularly Boko Haram. He has already taken some steps, particularly in the security sector, to try to improve their ability to go after a group like that. You know he basically hired all new chiefs of staff for his military services. “So there’s a lot of work to do, and he was very frank yesterday that he knows he has a lot of work to do. And he does want the support and help – again, I just – I can get you the dollar figure later. But I suspect that that support will change too over time as the needs in Nigeria are better defined going forward under his leadership.” In a related development, Boko Haram on Wednesday killed 50 people following two suicide attacks and series of bomb blasts in Gombe State and Cameroon. Last week (Thursday), 49 people were killed in a bomb attack on a market in the state. http://www.punchng.com/news/buhari-has-a-lot-to-do-us/ lalasticlala |

The fire from the explosion at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation pipeline at Arepo, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, had been put off as the corporation shut down product supply through the pipeline. A Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria, who visited Arepo to check the effect of the explosion, reports that the area is calm. NAN, however, observed that there were about five speed boats carrying some men suspected to be vandals, who came to the scene of the incident to search for their dead colleagues. NAN reports that each boat left the scene after about an hour carrying suspected dead bodies. Some policemen, who were in mufti, were seen around with one of them carrying his rifle. Some of the residents of Beachland Estate, who spoke to NAN on condition of anonymity, said the explosion and vandal activities were becoming worrisome to them. One of the residents was said to have died of heart attack when the explosion occurred. When NAN, in the company of other media men, visited the street where the victim died, they were told to leave the area so as not to put the family in trouble. “We don’t want press people here. The man that died was a banker not a vandal,” a resident said and gave no further detail about the deceased. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/07/nnpc-shuts-product-supply-to-put-off-fire-from-pipeline-explosion-at-arepo/ |

Nigeria governors have expressed worry over the high exchange rate of Naira to other foreign currencies. They have therefore said this and other issues would be discussed with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Thursday. This was one of the resolutions arrived at by the governors after their meeting in Abuja on Wednesday night. The meeting, which ended in the early hours of Thursday, was attended by majority of the governors. Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, who is also the Governor of Zamafara State, Alhaji Abdullaziz Yari, read the communique of the meeting to journalists. It was gathered that Naira is being exchanged for about 243 to a dollar at parallel market. Yari said, “We are going to discuss with Mr. President to seek lasting solutions to the worsening macroeconomic challenges confronting the nation, especially on foreign exchange stability. “The forum pledges to work with Mr. President to ensure coherent policy actions that will create a clear policy direction for the country and stimulate domestic production.”He also said the forum discussed health issues and that the governors pledged to cooperate with the Federal Government to ensure that the National Health Act is operational.” According to him, “Sequel to presentation made by the Country Representative of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the forum agreed to aggressively support the total eradication of polio in the country.” The NGF chairman denied the insinuations in some quarters that the money given to the states was meant to bail them out of their financial crisis. Rather, he said what was shared was money from the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Company Limited and Federation Accounts Allocation Committee, which, he said, were legitimate earnings for the three tiers of the government. The governor said, “It is also to inform our brothers in the media that yet the federal government has not given any bailout to any of the states. “What had been shared last time was monies from NLNG and FAAC and as we have been saying, we have not been looking for bailout, instead, we have been looking for all monies that are in the coffers of the federation account, most especially we are talking about some of the monies that are hung around the coffers of government to be brought together for the purpose of sharing.” http://www.punchng.com/news/governors-express-worry-over-high-naira-exchange-rate/ |
