A combined team of soldiers and policemen have been drafted to the Ijaw house venue of a proposed meeting by Niger Delta ex-militants. Sources told PREMIUM TIMES that the security operatives were deployed on the orders of Governor Seriake Dickson on Friday. Civil servants in Bayelsa Ministry if Culture and Ijaw National Affairs and other government agencies with offices in the same building were denied access to their offices on Friday. The Bayelsa government had announced the cancellation of the meeting convened by ex-militants leaders in Bayelsa in a statement on Friday. The Bayelsa Governor, Mr. Dickson, in a statement by his chief press secretary, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, stated that the governor has offered to meet with the former militants leaders at a later date. “Bayelsa State Governor, Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson has called for the postponement of the proposed meeting of the leaders of ex-agitators in the Niger Delta, earlier scheduled for this Saturday, 25th of July, 2015 in Yenagoa by them,” Mr. Iworiso-Markson said. The statement added that the governor will meet with them soon, to discuss issues as it affects the ex-agitators and others issues of overall strategic interest of the region and the nation as a whole. Mr. Iworiso-Markson called for the understanding and cooperation of all concerned. However, in a reaction to Bayelsa Govrnment’s seal off of the venue, the Ijaw Youths Council in a statement by its spokesperson, Eric Omare, blamed President Muhammad Buhari for the development. “The Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide condemn in the strongest terms the military invasion of Ijaw House, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State; the administrative headquarters of the Ijaw National Congress the Ijaw Youth Council and housing the Bayelsa State Ministry of Ijaw National Affairs and Culture,” he said. “A combined team of military and police officers in the early hours of Friday, the 24th of July, 2015 invaded and took over Ijaw House, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State to prevent ex-Niger Delta agitators from having their proposed meeting on Saturday, the 25th of July, 2015. “This is illegal, unconstitutional and a draw back to the dark days of military dictatorship where Nigerians were deprived of their fundamental rights. “The IYC wishes to remind the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, that we are in a constitutional democracy where things are done according to law.” The IYC also alleged that Mr. Buhari had a plot to attack the Niger Delta region. “The fears of many Nigerians that General Buhari would take Nigeria back to the dark days of dictatorship where there is no regard for human rights are coming to reality,” he said. “The IYC has it on good authority that President Buhari has an agenda to bomb and destroy the Niger-Delta region especially the Ijaw areas. “The military movement into the Niger Delta region we have been reliably informed would commence this week.” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/187238-ex-militants-meeting-in-bayelsa-thwarted-as-soldiers-seal-off-venue.html |

After a four-day official visit in the United States of America, President Muhammadu Buhari will be returning to Nigeria today with no pledge of concrete military assistance against Boko Haram terrorists from his hosts. The US government told the Nigerian leader that its arms are tied by an American law, the Leahy Act, which prevents it from selling arms to countries with human rights abuse records. President Buhari, who is returning home displeased, told the US government that the refusal by America to arm Nigerian troops because of “so-called human rights violations” and “unproven allegations,” would only help Boko Haram. A global human rights watch group, Amnesty International, had recently accused the Nigerian military under former President Goodluck Jonathan of gross human rights abuses in the prosecution of the war on terrorists. The Nigerian military forces had denied the allegation which President Buhari pledged to investigate. Buhari “departs with little practical military assistance in his battle against the Islamist militants who have turned the northeast of his country into a bloody war zone,” the Associated Press (AP) reported on Wednesday. The US government has vowed to help Nigeria defeat the insurgency but it is prohibited under law from sending weapons to countries that fail to tackle human rights abuses. “Regretably, the blanket application of the Leahy Law by the United States on the grounds of unproven allegations of human rights violations levelled against our forces has denied us access to appropriate strategic weapons to prosecute the war,” Buhari said. Addressing an audience of policy-makers, activists and academics in Washington, Buhari complained that Nigerian forces had been left “largely impotent” in the face of Boko Haram’s campaign of kidnapping and bombings. “They do not possess the appropriate weapons and technology which we could have had if the so-called human rights violations had not been an obstacle,” he said. “Unwittingly, and I dare say unintentionally, the application of the Leahy Law Amendment by the United States government has aided and abetted the Boko Haram terrorists.” He appealed to both the White House and the US Congress to find a way around the law — introduced by Senator Patrick Leahy in 1997 — and to supply Nigerian troops with high-tech weapons under a deal “with minimal strings.” Since 2009, Boko Haram has been trying to establish an Islamist breakaway state in a conflict that has seen 15,000 people killed and 1.5 million displaced. The group’s brutality and in particular the mass kidnapping and enslavement of schoolgirls has shocked world opinion. In June, rights watchdog Amnesty International said there was sufficient evidence to launch an investigation into senior Nigerian officers for war crimes. In a 133-page report, the group blamed the army for the extrajudicial execution of 1,200 people and the torture or arbitrary detention of thousands more. Buhari insists that the charges are not proven, but he has replaced his senior military commanders and has promised to investigate the allegations. http://dailytimes.com.ng/us-refuses-sell-weapons-nigeria/ |

By Levinus Nwabughiogu All Progressives Congress, APC, has said it would vehemently oppose the choice of Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose as Deputy Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, NGF. The body is due to elect its deputy chairman on Wednesday in Abuja. But source close to an APC governor in one of the North Central States said that the choice of Fayose has rattled APC governors who have vowed to frustrate PDP’s plan of fielding him for the position. According to the source, the governors recalled the role against the election of President Mohammadu Buhari during the campaigns, resolving that such a sensitive position would not be left in the hands of some they tagged as having “diarrhea of the mouth”. He said: “I wonder why the PDP thinks the Ekiti governor should be the choice for the Deputy Chairman of the Forum when they could not accept him as the chairman of their PDP Governors’ Forum. The choice is unacceptable to us and we would oppose it when we meet on Wednesday”. According to him, the APC was not against the PDP fielding a level headed governor to deputise for the chairman of the forum, but “certainly not Governor Fayose that is given to reckless and inciting statements and actions.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/07/apc-govs-oppose-pdps-choice-of-fayose-as-govs-forum-deputy-chairman/ |
