President Goodluck Jonathan has said he is confident of winning the forthcoming presidential elections later this month. The president said in an interview with television channel, Aljazeera, that he has done enough to guarantee victory for him and his ruling Peoples Democratic Party. He said there was no way he could lose the elections. “I will not lose the election,” the president said when asked whether the decision to postpone the election was informed by the suspicion that he was afraid of losing if the election was held on the previous date. Asked again if he would accept defeat and bow out gracefully if he loses, the President declared “I will win the election”. President Jonathan however said if he loses “by default”, then he will cede power and return to his village. “If by default somebody (else) wins this election, of course, I will go to my village. This country is not my father’s estate. I want to serve.” On whether the election would be postponed again, the president said the exercise will be conducted as scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission. INEC had postponed the general elections originally scheduled for February 14 and 21, to March 28 and April 11. Linking elections to Boko Haram attacks The President, who said he did not see why the elections should be postponed again, added that he was impressed with the level of successes recorded by the military in the fight against Boko Haram in the North Eastern part of the country. Mr. Jonathan said the security agencies were getting signals that politicians were trying to use Boko Haram to disrupt the February 14 elections. He said that based on the signals they were getting, the security agencies did not want to take any chances and had to demand for the postponement of the elections. Mr. Jonathan said the security operatives do not guarantee a 100 per cent ouster of Boko Haram from the affected region before elections could be conducted, but want to ensure that their attacks do not disrupt elections. On the progress report about the exploits of the military, the president said the army was determined to recapture all such territories, assuring that “very soon there will be no part of Nigeria where it will effectively be said this is a BH territory.” Mr. Jonathan said full territorial recovery did not mean the country would be insulated from terror attacks, pointing out that the government would need to gradually improve on the use of technology and close monitoring to bring down Boko Haram. “When we take over all the territories they (Boko Haram) are holding, they are becoming weaker. Now, we will improve our monitoring using superior technology to monitor their activities. Then, we will begin to pick them and, of course, frustrate their activities, over the period, it will go. We cannot live with terror. No, we can’t. We will stop it,” he stated. Asked if he failed to manage the Boko Haram crisis, the President said the issue did not start with him. Critics have continue to state that the situation would not have degenerated to the present state where the fate of over 234 young girls would be hanging in the balance if the President was decisive and tackled the crisis with the seriousness of the moment. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/177901-i-cant-lose-2015-presidential-elections-jonathan.html |

The impasse crippling political activities in the Ebonyi State chapter of the ruling People’s Democratic Party ( PDP) took a deeper crisis dimension on Tuesday, as a meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and the warring parties was inconclusive. The president, LEADERSHIP gathered had summoned the state Governor, Martins Elechi; Secretary to Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim and the PDP governorship candidate for Ebonyi state, David Umahi as well as some PDP leaders to the meeting with a view to addressing the political rancor once and for all. The meeting, which lasted for over five hours in the President’s office at the presidential villa Abuja was also attended by Vice President Namadi Sambo and some PDP governors led by chairman of their forum and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Obong Godswill Akpabio. Also in attendance were Governors Sule Lamido of Jigawa State and his Benue counterpart, Gabriel Suswam. After the December governorship primary in which former Health Minister, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu who was Elechi’s candidate lost to the governor’s deputy said to be the preferred candidate of the SGF, the state has been embroiled in a serious crisis. The embattled governor who also failed to scale through his own senatorial primary is at the moment facing impeachment threat from the Ebonyi State House of Assembly on allegations of misappropriation of funds, gross misconduct and anti party activities, as he is said to have shifted his support to the Labour Party governorship candidate in the state. It became apparent that yesterday’s meeting could not resolve the impasse in Ebonyi when the Elechi stormed out of the president’s office looking rather angry. He was very hostile to State House correspondents who had approached him for the outcome of the meeting, just as he threatened to brake a tape recorder belonging to one of the reporters. The governor who said he was not in Aso Rock to answer questions from journalists raised his walking stick, threatening angrily to smash the tape recorder of the correspondent who was adamant on getting answers from him. Benue State Governor, Suswam who spoke to journalists acknowledged the fact that the political crisis in Ebonyi was one of the major issues discussed at the meeting, even as he said the impasse in the south east state would soon be over. Suswam who came out of the meeting few minutes after his Ebonyi counterpart had left denied, however that Elechi did not storm out of the meeting, contrary to the impression created by his body language. He argued that the meeting went well and that Elechi only rushed out IOC the meeting the way he did to meet up with his flight. He said, “I don’t think he (Elechi) stormed out of the meeting. We ended the meeting properly, and I believe he had a flight to catch and so, he was rushing. “Yes, Ebonyi problem was one of the issues discussed in the meeting, but we are almost at the solution to that problem. So I think the governor was rushing to catch a flight”. On the allegation that some PDP candidates were not campaigning for other candidates of the ruling party, especially the party’s presidential candidate, Jonathan, the governor dismissed the claim as near impossible. He explained that all candidates of the party were duty bound to campaign for the party which implied that every single candidate was campaigning for all others of the party platform, not excluding the presidential ticket bearer. He said: “I don’t think that is true. People have different ways of campaining, and as a senatorial candidate there’s no way I can be campaigning for my seat alone without campaignong for the president. “You know in political parties we have issues. Different candidates have different issuses. There are no universal issues across the lenght and breadth of the parties. So it is not true that people are not campaigning for the president. “There are minor issues here and there and those issues like I said since yesterday, you will observe that between yesterday and today, we’ve been meeting. We are meeting because we want to be in charge, we want to be abreast. PDP is going to win this election landslide, there’s no two ways about it. Forget about the noise and propaganda. We are ready and willing, and nothing is going to stop it. “So there’s no issue of not campaigning for the president. We are all campaigning for the PDP. and all the PDP candidates across, even if no names are mentioned.” Suswam further explained that the series of convened by President Jonathan with PDP governors, candidates and party leaders in the last few days were targeted at calibrating the ruling party as safe guard for victory in the forthcoming general poll http://leadership.ng/news/politics/415054/jonathan-wades-into-ebonyi-crisis-summons-elechi-anyim-umahi |

Nigeria’s First Lady, Patience Jonathan, has declared that the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, will continue to rule Nigeria the next 60 years. Mrs. Jonathan, represented by the Minister of Women Affairs, Zainab Maina, spoke at the party’s women rally in Sokoto on Tuesday. She said that Nigerian women had got their fair share and attention under Jonathan’s administration by holding about 50 per cent of the posts. “The president has fulfilled all the promises he has made to Nigerian women in 2011 and he will do more if re-elected,’’ she said. The first lady also said that the president had 13 women in his cabinet, and had empowered women in many ways. She said that the president was also working tirelessly to curb the menace of Boko Haram insurgency. While commending women in the state for their sustained support to the PDP, She urged them collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). “Your PVCs are your power which will help you to cast your votes for the PDP candidates at all levels,’’ she said. This, she said, would ensure that women were not disenfranchised to vote. The first lady also called on mothers in the state not to allow their children to be used to cause a breach of the peace before, during and after the general elections. The first lady commenced the distribution of some “empowerment materials” to women in the state. The materials included 1,200 bags of rice, 5,000 wrappers, 5,000 bundles of guinea brocade, 800 women wears, 2,000 rubber mats, 800 children’s wears and 800 blankets.
