Nigerian troops engaged in cordon and search in Baga continue to discover more arms of various background and shapes abandoned in some houses and surrounding communities by fleeing terrorists, the Nigerian defence headquarters has said. The spokesperson for the Defence Headquarters, Chris Olukolade, a Major General, said heaps of weapons, most of which were strange looking or destroyed, were still being gathered. Many abandoned or destroyed motorcycles have also been discovered, Mr. Olukolade said. He said a soldier was stabbed while another was shot during a close quarter battle which ensued as troops involved in cordon and search caught up with some of the fleeing terrorists Saturday evening. Mr. Olukolade added, “A number of individuals who claimed to be residents are also being interrogated in order to ascertain their identity and motive. The group consisting mostly women continued to hail and cheer the troops as they conduct thorough search in the area. “Wanting to be sure the group was not working for the terrorists despite the excitement, they had to be placed under watch. “The cordon and search as well as patrol of the localities continue while the offensive on terrorists is progressing in other areas of the theatre of the counter terrorist campaign.” Nigerian troops had on Saturday reclaimed Baga and other surrounding communities after days of fierce fighting. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/177332-nigerian-troops-uncover-heaps-of-arms-abandoned-by-fleeing-boko-haram-terrorists-in-baga.html |
Unknown gunmen struck again in Rivers State, kidnapping the one of the aides to the State Governor, Mr. Freddy Ndigbara. Ndigbara, who is an anchorman for Governor Rotimi Amaechi events inside and outside Government House, Port Harcourt, was whisked away on Sunday by hoodlums in Kaani Community, Khana Local Government Area. It was gathered that Ndigbara, who is popularly called Freddie by Government House workers, was accosted and forced into a waiting car by the gunmen during a ward rally organised by the All Progressives Congress in the area. Oblivious of the danger lying ahead of him, the kidnap victim was said to have travelled from Port Harcourt to his home town to be part of the rally. The hoodlums, according to an eyewitness, had stormed the rally with a red Toyota Highlander sports utility van, made a quick search for their target before forcing him into the car. It was gathered that the organisers were planning to arrange the canopy for the rally when the kidnappers struck. The PUNCH learnt that Ndigbara’s abductors immediately sped off to an unknown destination, just as members of the party in Kaani, Ward Six, took cover to avoid being shot by the suspected kidnappers. Speaking on the incident, a former Chief Press Secretary to Amaechi, Mr. Blessing Wikina, said a group of gunmen, suspected to be thugs working for the Peoples Democratic Party, invaded the rally and took Ndigbara away. State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, confirmed the incident, adding that effort had already been intensified to ensure that the governor’s aide was released. http://www.punchng.com/news/gunmen-kidnap-amaechis-aide-at-rivers-rally/ |

Unknown arsonists, early Sunday, burnt down the secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party in Obi Local Area of Nasarawa State. This happened 48 hours after the party held its 2015 general elections campaign in the area. The spokesperson for the Nasarawa police command, Ismaila Numan, who confirmed the incident, said 18 suspects have been arrested in connection with the crime while police officers have been deployed to the scene of the incident to prevent further breakdown of law and order. Mr. Numan said the office was burnt a day after youth of the All Progressives Congress and those of the PDP clashed over vandalisation of billboards and campaign materials. PREMIUM TIMES gathered that the arsonists allegedly came with petrol in gallons, poured it on the roof of the secretariat and then set the building ablaze. Witnesses say the arsonists also drove away the security man before torching the building. The incident was a spillover of the Friday clash between the supporters of the PDP and the APC where gunshots were exchanged, leaving casualties on both sides. One witness, Ibrahim Kasimu, said the incident started when youth suspected to be APC supporters began to destroy canopies and chairs used by the PDP during their campaign in Obi Local Government Area. PDP youth, who responded to the attacks, took to the streets destroying every APC property in sight. The rampage happened a day after political parties in the state signed a code of conduct for the 2015 general elections in the presence of heads of security agencies in the state. The signing of the accord was organised by the state police command at the police officers mess along Jos road Lafia. The State chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Yunana Iliya, who also confirmed the burning of the party’s office, said all documents and valuables in the office were burnt. He asked security agencies in the state to take note of the attack on its members and property and to, as a matter of urgency, provide security for its members and supporters. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/177313-pdp-secretariat-burnt-down-in-nasarawa.html |

Ahead of the March 28 and April 11 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission has procured about 20,000 backup card readers and 35,000 backup batteries. The procurement of the backup devices is part of the precautionary measures by INEC to forestall challenges that may arise during the accreditation process of the elections. Kayode Idowu, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega, confirmed the development to PREMIUM TIMES. Mr. Idowu said the Commission had learned from the Ghana experience where card readers for election could not work due to battery problems. In the case of Nigeria, although the card readers could work for 12 hours when used continuously where as accreditation process is to last for only five hours, he said, yet the Commission has procured about 35,000 spare batteries, “so that if, for whatever reason, there may be a challenge with the battery, one can replace it”. Further, he said several integrity tests for the machines had been carried out in the United States, saying they don’t fail easily and are of highest quality. “In spite of that, we have bought nearly 20,000 spares, in addition to 152,000 active card readers, so that if for any reason the card reader malfunctions and can no longer continue, the spares would be deployed at the wards for the exercise,” he added. Similarly, Mr. Idowu noted that if a card reader cannot be replaced before the time for accreditation is over that day, the exercise would be repeated the following day. He said this option is preferred to reverting to manual accreditation by political parties because human error would always arise in such an arrangement. He also said poor mobile connection would not be a challenge as the card readers make use of sim cards, adding that the machines are designed with built-in memory due to poor network coverage that may be experienced in some areas. Mr. Idowu said there were no challenges of data manipulation and use of fake permanent voter cards. He said all the cards are preconfigured for respective polling units and added that after the accreditation of voters, INEC’s central server would receive real time information on the exercise, including the number of accredited voters before the casting of ballot proper would commence. The process, Mr. Idowu said, will check over voting. While briefing the Senate Wednesday, Mr. Jega had said wherever total vote casts are higher than accreditation figure, election would be cancelled in such polling unit. Mr. Idowu further ruled out data manipulation as a challenge, explaining that INEC would receive real-time information on the accreditation exercise and that the system is fool proof. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/177304-inec-procures-additional-20000-card-readers-35000-batteries.html |
President Goodluck Jonathan has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of ridiculing Nigeria before the international community and of scaring investors away from the country by his consistent criticism of his administration. In an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, Mr. Jonathan said Mr. Obasanjo, by his utterances, was creating the impression that Nigeria is a country on the verge of collapse. Mr. Jonathan therefore advised the former president to be civil in his criticism so as not to create the impression that the country is in crisis. “For one reason or the other, Obasanjo may disagree with me as his first political son. You can even disagree with your own biological children, as a human being, not to talk of disagreeing with your political children. So, he can agree or disagree with me, but the utterances have to be managed in a way that it does not affect the economy and security of this country. “But I will use this opportunity, because you asked, to just plead with my father that he is a leader, a former president of the country. He has led the country more than anybody — eight years of democratic governance and almost four years of military governance. No other person has that kind of record. “The stability of this country is critical in terms of the economy of this country. Rating agencies downgrade countries that are going into elections because the feeling is that there would be crisis. When you paint the colour of instability for your own nation, you are doing so much injustice to the country because it affects the economy of the country, not just affecting the country in terms of security and social issues alone. It affects the economy directly. So, I plead with very senior citizens that Nigeria is dear to us; we don’t have any other country than Nigeria. “So, actions and inactions, or utterances, should be guarded so that we don’t expose our country to the international community as if it is a country in danger, a country that is about to collapse. You are frightening investors, especially those who invest hot cash, to pull out their money from the country and that would affect the stock market and it would affect the economy.” Mr. Jonathan however insisted that he remained a political child of Mr. Obasanjo, saying he owes his rise to political prominence to the influence of the former President. “First and foremost, Obasanjo is a father to me. By divine providence and the grace of God, I am the President of Nigeria today. It is not by my strength. But God uses human beings to actualise His own blessings on human beings. And he used so many Nigerians, including former President Obasanjo, to play one role or the other for me,” he said. “I became the deputy governor of a state, became the governor, the vice president and president. I have no issues with him, and I really don’t want to join issues with President Obasanjo. I think it is not necessary,” he added. The relationship between both men worsened after Mr. Obasanjo’s wrote an 18-page open letter to Mr Jonathan on December 2, 2013, blaming the president for failing to deliver on his promises to Nigerians. He also accused him of making no effort to check the growing corruption in the country and allowing insecurity to degenerate. In the letter, Mr. Obasanjo also accused Mr Jonathan of hounding prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party opposed to his second term ambition. Since then, Mr. Obasanjo has relentlessly criticised the Jonathan administration and all efforts by party chieftains to reconcile both of them have failed. Matters got to a head last Monday after Mr Obasanjo, who apparently got wind of a plan to expel him from the party, dumped the party before the plan was executed. On the occasion, Mr Obasanjo, not one to leave without creating a spectacle, asked the PDP ward leader to tear his membership card. He also announced his retirement from active politics and expressed his desire to be a statesman. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/177307-jonathan-tackles-obasanjo-your-utterances-ridiculing-nigeria-scaring-investors.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |
