LaudableXX:
No, Lagos state is NOT trying to make Yoruba language compulsory for all courses in their tertiary institutions, as the courses being offered in those institutions will NOT be taught in Yoruba language. Lagos state is only making a credit pass at SSCE and NECO level, an entry requirement or a criteria for admission, into any tertiary institution owned by the state. Can you spot the difference? huh
sir, you crack me up...lets put it this way, if you take the waec/neco exams, pass english and maths, but fail yoruba, according to this law, you cannot get admission into the state universities righthuh does this, then, not make yoruba a compulsory subject to enter the unihuh? i did not state that courses in the unis would be taught using yoruba (after all no course in the uni has been taught using maths), what i stated and meant was that yoruba language is being unnecessarily elevated to a core subject for entry into university like maths and english are for most courses, infact if this law is actualized, then yoruba would be more important than maths and english as there are courses which do not require maths or english as prerequisite to study them.
hope we are clear sir?

Go back and read the attachment very well. sad General Studies is a mandatory course at 100 level for all tertiary institutions in Anambra. And Igbo is a compulsory part of that course. There is nowhere in the law enacted by Lagos State House of Assembly, that makes Yoruba as important as English or Mathematics. It only states that a credit pass in the language, is an entry requirement for students who wish to attend any of the 5 higher institutions owned by the state. You are the one trying to put a false spin on it, and mislead people. It is not by force to attend a tertiary institution owned by Lagos state, is it? Go to a federal institution, or attend anyone owned by the 35 other states of the federation. Inugo? huh
what spin am i putting on it sir?? firstly, before entering the uni in lagos state, you have to have at least a credit in yoruba, not so? according to this law anyway...all I am saying sir is that this is not the case in the east as some of you here have opined, where is the spin in what i just typed?

Throwback:
Are the higher institutions not the Yoruba state owned tertiary institutions?

Has a state not got the right to determine how it admits into its own institutions?

If admissions are low due to this requirement, then logical adjustments will obviously be made.
you sef... higher institutions, no matter where they are located, are for ALL Nigerians. You just cannot introduce a law that is as discriminatory and inciting as this out of the blue. It is rude, inflammatory, bigoted, tribalistic and uncalled for. Every Nigerian, no matter the language he/she speaks, has the right to higher education. bros, please use your church mind judge this matter, you n laudable write like educated fellas so please think like them. No one is saying that our culture should not be preserved, but you've got to agree that they are less inciting n discriminatory ways of preserving it.

well what i read was a credit pass in yoruba as a criteria for admission into state owned tertiary institutions.

did Anambra or Imo do that?
that is what i am trying to point out to him but he is just taking everything personally like psquare grin

Okay, you do not wail. You merely lament. sad And you are talking from a half-baked perspective. Nobody said engineering, medicine or such courses will be taught in Yoruba. You merely need a credit pass in the language at secondary school level, in order to gain admission into a tertiary institution, owned by Lagos state. As for Igbo being made a compulsory part of General Studies courses in Anambra, I am not trying to convince anyone, you can read it all here:
bros, but promotion from js111 to ss1 is not the same as making it compulsory for admission into higher institution na,,,,,,,that there is a department of igbo language does not make it a compulsory course in tertiary institutions. what lagos is trying to do is make yoruba as important as maths and english for ALL students, even those who know nothing of the language

sir, igbo is not a compulsory subject to study any course in the tertiary institution in the east, at least not to any course that has no bearing with native language,...correct me if i am wrong, but is lagos state not trying to make yoruba language compulsory for ALL courses in the tertiary institution?

And you conveniently ignored the fact that Igbo is a compulsory part of mandatory courses like General Studies, in state-owned tertiary institutions in Anambra and Imo.You also ignored the fact that Igbo is compulsory in all state-owned primary and secondary schools in Anambra and students will not be promoted to the next class if they fail Igbo, no matter how high their scores are, in English, Maths, Physics, Biology and other core subjects. undecided

If Lagos state has decided to make a credit pass in Yoruba language part of its admission criteria into tertiary institutions, why don't you opt for a federal institution where the law does not apply? Why are you chaps wailing over this issue when alternatives exist nationwide? shocked
firstly, i do not wail...it is beneath me grin secondly, i don't really care about what you guys do, I have finished my tertiary education and have served my country to the best of my ability. what i am trying to right here is the misconception that igbo is a mandatory subject for admission into higher institutions in the east. I served in Anambra and I can tell you, without mincing words, that igbo is not a mandatory subject for promotion, at least in the school where i served. I am not sure who you are trying to convince here, me or yourself, cause using general studies as an example is laughable, we are talking about courses like medicine, engineering, law etc. This law, at least to the best of my knowledge at the moment, will restrict people who are not well versed in Yoruba language from studying such courses, which is discrimination at best and criminality at worst

The PDP guy is a hopeless joker. angry He did not complain when toll gate charges were increased. Now he is wailing about the introduction of Yoruba language, as a criteria for admission into state-owned schools. Why didn't his party PDP make noise when Anambra and Imo passed similar laws, to make Igbo compulsory in primary and secondary schools within their region? Or when Igbo language was incorporated into General Studies courses in state-owned tertiary institutions in Anambra? Yeye man!
huhhuh either you dont understand what is happening here or na me dey overstand. there is no state in the east where it is compulsory to have at least a credit in igbo language to be admitted into their state universities. that, seems to me to be what lagos state is trying to do here. they want to make yoruba a core subject like maths and english for their state university.
