The Senate on Monday pledged that its members would sustain the donation of their half salaries to the Federal Government until the nation is totally free of the pandemic. The PUNCH had exclusively reported on Monday that the senators agreed to donate half of their March 2020 salaries to the fight against coronavirus in Nigeria. The red chamber, while confirming the report in a statement by its acting spokesperson, Senator Godiya Akwashiki, added that the federal lawmakers would continue the gesture beyond March. Part of the statement read, “After due consultations following a keen review of the national efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria, the Senate wishes to announce that from March 2020, distinguished senators will be donating 50 per cent of our salaries to these efforts to stop the spread of the disease, otherwise known as COVID-19, in our country. “This monthly contribution from the Upper Legislative Chamber will be sustained until Nigeria is declared safe from the ravages of this deadly disease.” The Senate commended the efforts of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and his regime towards the goal of securing the nation against this plague. The Senate expressed its willingness and readiness to do whatever is required of the legislature for the effectiveness of all the measures now in place or that may be required in the future to win the fight against this menace. “It also acknowledges the patriotic response of public-spirited individuals and organisations who have contributed in one way or the other in support of this fight. “The Senate further appeals to the citizens to comply with the directives on social distancing and observance of basic rules of hygiene as explained by public health officials. “It is the most effective way to protect ourselves, families and country against COVID-19. “This is a global adversity that is testing the wit and resilience of mankind all over the world. “By staying resolute and each of us responsibly playing our roles, COVID-19 like all epidemics before it will soon be pushed into history,” the statement added. https://punchng.com/we-will-earn-half-pay-till-nigeria-is-free-of-covid-19-says-senators/ |
The Stallion Group has said it will provide locally-produced rice and fish free to all government-run hospitals dedicated to COVID-19 cases. It said the donation would be made available through its philanthropic arm, Stallion Empowerment Initiative, as part of its support for the government at all levels and individuals already afflicted with coronavirus currently fighting the disease at various hospitals nationwide. It said in a statement on Sunday that the gesture, which would last for three months, was its contribution to the fight against the coronavirus pandemic in the country. The statement quoted the Chief Executive Office of the Stallion Group, Anant Badjatya, that the organisation had further committed one staff bus each for the five government-run COVID-19 hospitals in Lagos. “The group will also provide drivers and fuel for these buses. This arrangement will help ensure safer and comfortable transportation of our healthcare workers who are in the frontline in this fight against the virus,” it stated. The Chairman of the Stallion Group, Mr Sunil Vaswani, said, “These are exceptionally difficult times and urgent emergency resources have to be deployed to cope with the needs of affected states and support their healthcare systems.” https://punchng.com/stallion-offers-govt-hospitals-three-month-free-rice-fish/ |

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), has declared curfew in Lagos, Abuja and Ogun State. He said the restriction was to curb the community transmission of COVID-19 in the states where it is prevalent. The PUNCH reports that Lagos has the highest number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Nigeria followed by Abuja. He said this during a nationwide broadcast on Sunday. He said, “Based on the advice of the Federal Ministry of Health and the NCDC, I am directing the cessation of all movements in Lagos and the FCT for an initial period of 14 days with effect from 11pm on Monday, 30th March 2020. This restriction will also apply to Ogun State due to its close proximity to Lagos and the high traffic between the two States. “All citizens in these areas are to stay in their homes. Travel to or from other states should be postponed. All businesses and offices within these locations should be fully closed during this period. “The Governors of Lagos and Ogun States, as well as the Minister of the FCT, have been notified. Furthermore, heads of security and intelligence agencies have also been briefed. “We will use this containment period to identify, trace and isolate all individuals that have come into contact with confirmed cases. We will ensure the treatment of confirmed cases while restricting further spread to other States. “This order does not apply to hospitals and all related medical establishments as well as organizations in health care related manufacturing and distribution. “Furthermore, commercial establishments such as; food processing, distribution and retail companies; petroleum distribution and retail entities, power generation, transmission and distribution companies; and private security companies are also exempted. “Although these establishments are exempted, access will be restricted and monitored. “Workers in telecommunication companies, broadcasters, print and electronic media staff who can prove they are unable to work from home are also exempted.” https://punchng.com/breaking-buhari-declares-curfew-in-lagos-abuja-ogun/ |
All ye addicted smokers be wise and stay alive |
The World Health Organisation has said smokers and tobacco consumers have a high chance of contracting COVID-19. The United Nations’ specialised body for global health also said asthmatic and diabetic patients are vulnerable to be infected with the virus. It said, “Smokers are likely to be more vulnerable to COVID-19 as the act of smoking means that fingers (and possibly contaminated cigarettes) are in contact with lips which increases the possibility of transmission of the virus from hand to mouth. “Smokers may also already have lung disease or reduced lung capacity which would greatly increase the risk of serious illness. “Smoking products such as water pipes often involve the sharing of mouthpieces and hoses, which could facilitate the transmission of COVID-19 in communal and social settings. “Conditions that increase oxygen needs or reduce the ability of the body to use it properly will put patients at higher risk of serious lung conditions such as pneumonia. “People with pre-existing medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus. “WHO advises people of all ages to take steps to protect themselves from the virus, for example by following good hand hygiene and good respiratory hygiene.” The novel virus has infected over 600,000 people with over 27,000 deaths. The statistics keep exploding hourly with Nigeria’s cases hitting 97 as of 10:00am on Sunday, March 29. https://punchng.com/smokers-at-higher-risk-of-covid-19-who/ |

AGAIN TB JOSHUA PROPHESY CAME TO PASS AS OXFORD UNIVERSITY DISCOVERS COVID-19 VACCINE. One of the leading Nigerian Prophet, TB Joshua was ‘trending’ on Twitter throughout Friday 27th March 2020 as citizens debated the veracity of his prophecy regarding the impending end of the deadly coronavirus. A video from Sunday 1st March 2020, in which Joshua is seen declaring March 27th 2020 would signal the end of coronavirus was widely shared online, stirring controversy and heated discussions. In a broadcast released today on Emmanuel TV, the cleric again insisted the “coronavirus is fading away” before encouraging viewers to hold fast to their faith. Merely hours later, a team of experts from the prestigious University of Oxford in United Kingdom announced that they had discovered a vaccine for the deadly virus and would begin human testing on volunteers in the coming days. Despite the scepticism expressed by online commentators, other significant events around the world throughout the course of Friday suggest that Joshua’s words indeed carried weight. On the cusp of a medical breakthrough, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced that the first patients enrolled in its ‘Solidarity Trial’, which will officially examine potential treatment options for Covid-19. “This is a historic trial which will dramatically cut the time needed to generate robust evidence about what drugs work,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said. In addition, statistics showed that the rate of the virus’ spread in Italy has started to steadily diminish, with more than 900 declared recovered on Friday alone – sparking celebration from health officials in the stricken country. Furthermore, Spain – one of the hardest hit nations in Europe – declared the virus was past its peak and expected cases to begin reducing. For more than one week, there have been no new declared cases of the disease in Wuhan, China – the epicentre of the outbreak – leading to Chinese officials reopening most of Hubei province with life returning to virtual normalcy. A Chinese citizen released a video showing an outpouring of rain in Wuhan, in which he can be heard testifying that TB Joshua had declared rain would fall in the city as a sign the disease was being ‘wiped away’. In Uganda, over 100 of those suspected to have been infected were confirmed to be negative after testing, leading to jubilation from the country’s health minister. Joshua’s followers have held fast to their conviction that the “noise” of the disease had indeed been silenced according to the cleric’s declaration and the end was in sight for the sickness that resulted in an almost global lockdown. “Let us take control of our situation instead of being afraid, for satan, the cause of crises, has been defeated,” the popular cleric declared during the interactive broadcast subsequently uploaded to YouTube. “Don’t listen to the panic of the moment. Warfare is necessary for our victory,” he insisted. And the so called man of God is happy she's in church to return all the glory. One would wonder who she's returning the glory to. Is God now a promoter of immorality and moral decadence? |
And what relevance is this statement to Nigerians? Clearly a government of misplaced priorities. |
The special adviser on media and publicity to President Mohammadu Buhari, Mr Femi Adesina had today subtly trolled a Nigerian cleric over his prophesy on the outcome of the 2015 general elections. Mr Femi also laid claims to how the said Man of God(god) envisioned the death of El Rufai. Nairalanders who do you think this Man of God could be? He claims to be prophet. He said whoever won 2015 presidential poll would not rule. He said El-Rufai won’t win in Kaduna. Later, he said the man would die within a time. El-Rufai is well and alive. Is that one a prophet? Fake. It’s not me that says so, it’s the Holy Bible.https://mobile.twitter.com/FemAdesina/status/1222138834756022273
