Health / Covid-19 Edo Set To Commence Market Closure by freeman131: 7:21am On Apr 07, 2020
Edo State Government on Monday recorded two fresh cases of the novel coronavirus bringing the total number in the state to 11.

It was also announced that Governor Godwin Obaseki who has been in isolation for the past 14 days will personally lead the battle against coronavirus from today (Tuesday).

The Deputy Governor of the state, Mr Philip Shaibu, who addressed the press on the update on COVID-19 said the state governor was in good health condition and held meetings with traditional rulers and local chairmen via Skype.

He said worried by the cases, the state government had ordered the closure of all markets from 12 midnight of Tuesday (today) while the food section would be relocated to the field of nearby public primary or secondary schools.

According to him, the state government, which now has 234 contact tracing, had made the wearing of face masks mandatory for those moving out of their homes.

Shaibu maintained that anyone caught moving about without a face mask as a precautionary measure would be sanctioned.

“These measures were put in place to save residents of the state from contracting the disease. Information reaching the state government indicated that some returnees who are of Edo origin were using hotels to self-isolate. I want to say that henceforth, the state government has banned the use of hotels and homes for self isolation,” he said.

The deputy governor narrated how one of the 11 that tested positive reportedly took a public transport to Irrua Specialist Hospital instead of taking a taxi. He said he was referred to the specialist hospital from the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

“Only God knows how many people he has infected with the disease. And that is why we are tracing those who may have had contact with the man that tested positive. It may not be just his family members alone but those that boarded the same vehicle with him,” he said.

He advised anyone that suspected having symptoms of the disease should approach any of the four isolation centres located across the three senatorial districts of the state, including Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Benin City where the state has two isolation centres and one holding centre.

The deputy governor added that the state government had put in place a screening centre to receive anyone in the state for any ailment, noting that “COVID-19 is here with us, so everyone should join hands with us to fight the disease.”

Also speaking, representative of World Health Organisation, Mrs Faith Ireye, pointed out that samples from 61 persons indicated that 50 were negative while 11 were positive.

“I am very glad the state government has ordered that the markets be shut down from midnight of tomorrow (Tuesday) because anytime I pass through the market and see the way people are crowded, there is no self distancing. But from tomorrow, I think we will begin to have some relief.

“I want to inform us that from the confirmed cases in the contacts that we have seen whose specimen were taken to the laboratory, we found out that they walked into the virus. Let me talk about the last case whose two relations are positive. He got it from his two friends who came from Italy and the United Kingdom. The two have gone back but they left the virus with us. So, please self distancing is very important.

“We have 11 cases and from that 11, we are tracing 234 contacts. Two weeks ago, it was just one, now we have 11. If we continue like this, by the middle of this month, we will be having 22,” she said.

She stated that social distancing and regular washing of hands were key to warding off the pandemic from spreading.

Politics / FG Declares Friday And Monday Easter Holiday by freeman131: 7:09am On Apr 07, 2020
The Federal Government has declared Friday and Monday as public holiday to mark the Easter celebration.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, said this in a statement by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Georgina Ehuriah.

He urged Christians in the country to emulate the outstanding characteristics of Jesus Christ amongst which are tolerance, love, peace and compassion.

Aregbesola further called on them to use the occasion of this year’s Easter Celebration to pray for Nigeria and the entire world at this time of global emergency of COVID-19 pandemic.

“The minister appealed to all Nigerians to continue to support the efforts of government towards fighting the coronavirus disease.

“He reminded them of the need to adhere strictly to the measures put in place by relevant authorities towards preventing the spread of the virus in the country, particularly, through the observance of social distancing, in addition to regular personal hygiene and sanitary practices,” the statement said.

Health / 10 Surprising Health Benefits Of Pap(akamu,eko,ogi) by freeman131: 5:08pm On Apr 06, 2020
So lately, I have been indulging in pap. After making the pap, I like adding little sugar to eat and pour my milk on it, stir and it sure does taste, heavenly! Note: Very little sugar, however you can still serve this meal without sugar. You can eat it with akara (which I love doing) or with moi moi or with bread. It all depends on you.

Nigeria is almost experiencing rainy season. It will be very great to serve this meal in your homes during this period because of how warm it makes one feel after taking it.

Pap is very easy to make, delicious and healthy. I knew that it is a healthy meal but I just had to find out for myself, what these health benefits are. Since I found myself enjoying this delicious meal, I might as well find out its health benefits right?

Well, I was surprised to say the least by what I found to be the health benefits of this delicious meal. Shall we find out what they are together?

1) It is a meal great for people with high blood pressure and even increased intraocular pressure because of its high potassium and zero sodium content present in it. This helps to lower B.P (blood pressure and eye pressure)

2) It is a good source of carbohydrate. This is meal highly recommended for athletes.

3) It is a meal that replaces the fluid lost in the body as a result of sweating, therefore it's safe to say it is a natural means of rehydration.

4) It helps to pass out unwanted elements in the body through urine. That's why if you notice, whenever you take pap, you tend to urinate a lot.

5) It is high in Vitamin A, B Vitamins such as B1, B5, B3, riboflavin, panthothenic acid and thiamine.

6) It is also high in folic acid, potassium (as we mentioned in 1), zinc, magnesium, selenium, chromium and phosphorous.

7) It is a meal that retains many of its nutrients after processing. This is because it doesn't have to undergo long manufacturing processes.

cool It is a meal that is 100% natural. There are no additives present in it.

9) It is a meal that prides itself on little or no stress to the digestive system. That is, it is easy to digest.

10) It assists nursing mothers to increase the flow of their breast milk, which is why pap is a highly recommended meal for nursing mothers.

An interesting meal right? With the above benefits, I guess you will now increase your intake of pap, right? *Smiles*

Well, as was mentioned earlier, you can either take it with akara, moi moi or bread.

Health / Covid-19 Why You Need To Wear Facemask-Study by freeman131: 7:01am On Apr 05, 2020
A new study has adduced reasons why people may have to wear face masks whenever they are with others, especially in public places.

The researchers state that COVID-19 could be spread through mere breathing and not just by large droplets emitted in a cough or sneeze, hence the need for regular wearing of face masks.

The study, published in peer-reviewed journal, Science, on April 1, explained that if the virus could be suspended in the ultrafine mist that people produce when they breathe out, protection becomes more difficult, thus, strengthening the argument that people should wear masks in public to reduce unwitting transmission of the virus from asymptomatic carriers.

The National Academy of Sciences said the study has given a boost to an unsettling idea: that the virus can spread through the air.

Harvey Fineberg, who heads a standing committee on Emerging Infectious Diseases and 21st Century Health Threats had, in a letter written on April 1 and addressed to the Head of White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Kelvin Droegemeier, noted that though current studies on the issue are not conclusive, “the results of available studies are consistent with aerosolization of virus from normal breathing.”

Before now, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as other health agencies had insisted that the primary route of transmission for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is through the larger respiratory droplets, of up to one millimeter across which people expel when they cough or sneeze.

The agencies maintain that gravity grounds the droplets within one or two meters, even though they deposit the virus on surfaces, from which people can pick it up and get infected when they use unwashed hands to touch their mouth, nose, or eyes.

The debate began when researchers reported earlier in the year in The New England Journal of Medicine, another peer-reviewed journal that SARS-CoV-2 can float in aerosol droplets—below 5 microns across—for up to 3 hours, and remain infectious.

In their review, Fineberg and his NAS colleagues pointed to other studies, including a recent one by Joshua Santarpia and colleagues at the University of Nebraska Medical Center that found widespread evidence of viral RNA in isolation rooms of patients being treated for COVID-19.

“Viral RNA turned up on hard to reach surfaces, as well as in air samplers more than two meters from the patients,” the Nebraska team had found.

Agriculture / Edo Residents Attack Garri Sellers Over Price Hike by freeman131: 6:43pm On Apr 03, 2020
Violence broke out at Oregbeni market in the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State on Thursday as protesting buyers pounced on sellers of garri in the market. They beat and forced them to reduce the cost of garri which had been increased by over one hundred per cent above the normal price.

Following the partial lockdown imposed by Edo State government as part of efforts to contain the spread of novel coronavirus, the price of gaari rose from N1, 600 to N2, 800 per plastic while a bag which was N8,000 before now rose to between N12, 000 and N15,000.

The residents, who had remained indoors, went to the market only to find the prices of food items beyond their reach. Costs of food at road side canteens also rose from N100 a plate of rice to N150.

But the residents, angered by the sudden increase in the price of food items in the market, compelled the market women to reduce the prices.

The situation later became rowdy as more customers in the market gathered to protest the price hike and later pounced on the market women and beat them up.

Following the outbreak of violence in the market, the market women association immediately met and reversed the prices of all the food items to the old prices.

A resident, Mr Osaze Okunbor, who witnessed the incident, said it was unfair on the part of the market women to increase the cost of food items knowing that people could not go to work again because of coronavirus.

“It was a tug of war, we begged the market women but they claimed that they were selling what they bought. We wondered why the price of food items would suddenly go up within such a short period,” he said.

According to Okunbor, a lot of people were happy by the action of the youths which resulted in the reversal of prices of food items.

Behave yourselves or lockdown’ll be extended, minister warns Nigerians
“How can we survive as a country if we continue to treat ourselves this way? Tell me, is garri an imported food item that its price suddenly jumped up? I mean this is absolute rubbish,” he said.

Efforts to get the police reaction on the incident proved abortive as the state Police Public Relations Officer Mr Chidi Nwabuzor, did not pick his calls and neither replied the message sent to his telephone on the incident.

I appreciate his giving spirit but i think we need to grow and move away from show-off and publicity orientation. Giving is good but it does not require camera. Some people will disagree with me and say it is to encourage others, but giving is primarily to encourage those that we are extending the kindness towards and by the time some of them got opportunity to do, they will realize that they were once in need and that will make it easy for some of them to do willingly too. You do not need to convince the whole world, anyone that will do charity will do without been convinced by any other person. in fact, most people that do charity conceived the idea earlier before they got they opportunity.

Politics / Write Play On Pandemic Later, Presidency Replies Soyinka by freeman131: 7:53am On Apr 02, 2020
The Presidency has reacted to the comments of the Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, faulting the lockdown order of the Federal Government that Nigeria is not in a “war emergency”.

It said the playwright had no specialty in medicine but may choose to write a play on the pandemic after the emergency was over.

In a statement signed on Wednesday night by Garba Shehu, a media aide to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), the presidency re-emphasised that the 14-day lockdown is in the interest of Nigerians.

The president’s spokesman advised Nigerians to trust science and not fiction.

He said, “Professor Soyinka is not a medical professor. His qualifications are in English literature, and his prizes are for writing books and plays for theatres.

“Across the world…mandated lockdowns are in place to slow and defeat the spread of coronavirus.

“The Government’s primary duty in law and action is the defence of the people of Nigeria. We face a global pandemic. Nigeria is now affected. The scientific and medical guidance the world over is clear: the way to defeat the virus is to halt its spread through limitation of movement of people.

“Perhaps, Wole Soyinka may write a play on the coronavirus pandemic, after this emergency is over.

“In the meantime, we ask the people of Nigeria to trust the words of our doctors and scientists – and not those of some glorified fiction writers – at this time of national crisis.”

Romance / My Elder Brother Is A Chronic Masturbator by freeman131: 10:12am On Apr 01, 2020
I have noticed for about a year now that my Elder brother(age 29) who's a doctor masturbates for a living.

I started living with him in Abuja since April last year.

One night I had a strange nightmare so I decided to tell him about this but to my utmost surprise I caught him masturbating using a porn video in his laptop.

I was really shocked and as a caring younger bro I tried to confront him.

He told me that he's been battling with this act since his University days.

The surprising thing is that he's got a pretty girlfriend who loves him so much.

I had already advised him on seeking spiritual cleansing from our pastor, all to no avail. Now I feel really guilty knowing this and confused about how to make him stop this.

Should I inform my parents, pastor, siblings or his girlfriend?

Please I need constructive advice thanks.
