Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has received commendations from the World Bank, over his role at ensuring the successful Implementation of the Nigerian Covid-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus Program (NG-CARES), in Benue State.

The Governor received the commendation when the Independent Verification Agent Team sent by the World Bank visited the state to assess the level of implementation of the programme.

The NG-CARES Program is an initiative of the Nigerian government in collaboration with the World Bank to provide support to the most vulnerable households and businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Leader of the team, Dr. Ayopo Olotu, while acknowledging the successful implementation of the program in the State, also commended the result areas of the program for their cooperation, which according to him, has facilitated the verification exercise.

Receiving the delegation on behalf of the state government, the Ag. Director General, Benue State Planning Commission, Dr. Jerome Andohol, appreciated the Governor for his unwavering support for the program in the state.

He however, expressed concern over interference in the programme in the past by individuals, seeking to manipulate the system to gain cheap money.

Andohol urged such individuals to desist from act, saying the benefits of helping others always come back in unexpected ways.

Also in her remarks, the State Coordinator of the NG-CARES, Mrs. Jacyntha Tor-Wombo, while also appreciating Governor Alia and Dr Andohol for their support for the NG-CARES Program, acknowledged that although mistakes were made in the past, it has become paramount for the stakeholders to retrace steps in order to ensure the objectives of the program are achieved.

A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Benue State, Tersoo Kula, said the state was unable to qualify for any benefits of this programme few years back but was rather indebted to the tune of N265million for failure to implement the programme diligently.

“But with the success recorded by the implementation of the programme by the Alia led administration, there will be funds available for the state to pay back and qualify for the minimum grant of N500million as a result of continuous implementation of the programme,” the statement said.

It is a common perception that some politicians have scant consideration for integrity in their conduct but even the most shameless of them all will doff their hats for Samuel Ortom, the immediate past Governor of Benue State and his minions, especially, those who function shamelessly as his media handlers.

At a time the entire Benue State is yet to recover from the state of shock due to revelations of mindless plunder, primitive theft, unprecedented fraud, criminal neglect and utter kakistocracy perpetrated by the worst kleptocrats known to man, the handlers of the old order seek to mask their obvious failures by launching futile attacks on the barely one month old administration of Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacith Alia.

Sadly, the likes of Terver Akase and his co- travelers seem to wish away the scars of Ortom’s devastating regime of sorrow, tears and blood which turned a hitherto proud people into destitutes. The agony of workers and the plight of pensioners are still open sores inflicted by the soulless contraption headed by a self righteous and pretentious group. The fact that workers in Benue received salary alerts for the first time this year in June counts against the perfidious government of Samuel Ortom.

Moreover, the recent tours of government offices by Governor Alia and the shocking state of public infrastructure clearly showed that the affairs of the state were run by people who are subhuman. From the Benue State House of Assembly to the State Secretariat to the Liaison Office in Abuja, the story is the same as leaking roofs, cracked walls, non functional toilets and degrading surroundings. The case of the Government House residence is particularly pitiable with vandalized furniture, window blinds, electronics and other household appliances. This is besides the carting away of ALL VEHICLES including an ambulance and Press Crew bus attached to the office of the Governor. At the last count, 29 vehicles attached to the Governor's office are still nowhere to be found.

In saner climes, those who brought this state of affairs will either be cooling their heels in jail or be engaged in one form of restitution or the other. Unfortunately, here, we have ignoble image launderers trying to rub salt on the injuries they inflicted on the people. Our society has allowed people who deliberately starved workers by converting their wages to family bazaars to open their foul mouths too wide. People who performed Goebellian roles while the state was bled to near death for eight years are sudden critics of a one month old correctional government. People who failed to pay wages for upwards of 10 months but went ahead to recruit thousands more as a booby trap to the succeeding administration are now attempting an assessment after one month!.

Akase’s laughable and pathetic comparison between Alia’s one month old government and Ortom’s maladministration brings his mental health into question. He has forgotten that Ortom’s first action as Governor was to borrow money from commercial banks at ridiculous interest rates in the name of paying workers and “ building infrastructure “. This was followed by the release of N28billion bailout funds which grew wings. The often repeated “ achievement” of repainting the School of Nursing and its subsequent re-accreditation are mere tokenisms.

Is it not pathetic that Ortom's Akase is still mentioning renovations eight years later? It would be a different matter if a new school was built. In any case, the Alia blueprint isn’t meant for completion in 30 days. At the appropriate time, the people will have ample opportunities to assess their Governor using the right parameters.

It is amusing how a government that surreptitiously passed a humongous pension law for its benefit but failed to pay people who spent 35years in service will turn around and comment on the reforms of its successor. They should be reminded that the verdict of rejection passed on them by the people is still in force.

Where do they find the moral strength to still talk? Where is their shame? If there still exist shame in the land!

The Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Prof. Itse Sagay, said the 2023 election was the best so far in the country.

Sagay stated this while speaking in an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

The Chairman hailed the role of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in the election.

Recall that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared the winner of the presidential election, amid criticism that the exercise was marred with violence.

Frontline contenders in the election; Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP)’s Peter Obi have challenged the outcome of the poll.

But, Sagay maintained that the election was credible, citing APC’s loss in its Lagos State stronghold.

He said, “In my personal opinion, in terms of representing the minds and wishes of Nigerians in an election, this is probably the best election we have had.”

The Senior lawyer noted that previous elections especially during other democratic dispensations were marred by irregularities.

He said, “So, we had good elections in 2011, 2015, and 2019. But in terms of representing or interpreting what Nigerians feel, it [2023]is the best election we have ever had.

“If you look at the ways things have gone with the BVAS (Bimordal Voter Accreditation System), the very idea that the APC was defeated in Lagos, that should make you realise immediately that these are very credible elections. If you go through the whole country, it is the same sort of accuracy and reflection on the feelings of Nigerians.”

Sagay argued that the 2023 elections were determined by ethnicity, religion, and organisational skills.

The PACAC boss said, “But above all, what gave Tinubu the edge was his capacity to organise, plan and plant agencies and supporters and various administrative bodies all over the states in the country.

“So, that in my view is the explanation of what happened,” he added. “So, I believe it expressed the true mind of Nigerians as of today. There is something natural about the results.”

Meanwhile, Sagay, said the Labour Party “did excellently well” in some areas, especially in the South-East but rued the party’s “abysmal results” in the North-East and North-West regions.

- Forwards Bill to Grant him Gratuity, Pension Other Benefits after May 29th.

It has come to our knowledge that the outgoing Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom has forwarded a bill to the State House of Assembly that will place ex-Governors, starting with him, on Gratuity, Pension and other benefits.

Although the bill is yet to be presented and read for the first time on the floor of the Assembly, the bill also stipulates that after May 29th when he will become ex-Governor, Ortom should be allowed by law to go with some choice properties of government in his possession as his post- service package.

According to the bill which was sited by our impeccable sources, Governor Ortom should be built a Mansion of his taste in any part of the Country he chooses to stay after leaving Government House; his medical trips with those of his family members should be footed by the State in addition to a jumbo monthly pay package.

Meanwhile, findings revealed that members of the Benue House of Assembly are disposed to passing the bill but on condition that the Governor must give them some gratifications before they will initiate action on the bill which they consider to be more in Governor Ortom's interest.

Consequently, is it not appalling that Ortom who has, throughout his time as Governor of Benue State treated pensioners with utmost barratry that slides most of them to destitution now wants to be a pensioner?

We therefore, call on all citizens of conscience to intervene by restraining their representatives at the Benue State House of Assembly from initiating any action that will facilitate passing the bill in order not to deepen the despondency of the state.

Governor-Elect Alia Decries Killing Of 46 Persons In Benue Community

The Benue State Governor-Elect, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has condemned in totality what he termed the brutal killings of innocent lives in Umogidi community in Otukpo Local Government Area of the state.

No fewer than 46 persons have been reported dead by suspected herdsmen, barely 24 hours after the same village suffered an attack by the suspected herdsmen and three persons were killed.

Fr. Alia made this condemnation on Friday in a statement signed by Donald Kumun, Deputy Director of Communications, Alia/OdeAbuja 2023 Campaign Organization.

He sympathized with the families of the deceased and condoled with them, calling on the Umogidi community and the Benue people as a whole to remain calm and law-abiding amidst their sorrows and pains.

Fr. Alia called on the security agencies to conduct surveillance to identify the perpetrators behind the killings and nip it in the bud for peace to be restored in the communities.

He assured the Umogidi community and others affected by the attacks of his resilience to work with relevant security agencies and communities in the state to stop the “senseless killings” when he is sworn in as the next governor of the state on May 29, 2023.

Speaking at the events, Fr. Alia expressed his gratitude to the Benue State Council of Chiefs and the entire Benue people for their overwhelming support during the election and emphasized the importance of traditional institutions in the governance of the state.

He stated, "I am humbled by the mandate given to me by the good people of Benue State, and I promise to do everything in my power to deliver on the promises I made during the campaign." "However, I am also mindful of the fact that traditional institutions play a crucial role in the governance of our state, and I am committed to working closely with the Tiv and Idoma paramount rulers to move Benue State forward."

The certificate was presented to him by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Independent National Electoral Commission, Festus Okoye, at the Precious Event Centre, Makurdi, today.

Benue State, Nigeria - In a fiercely contested gubernatorial election, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has emerged victorious in his polling unit, ward, and local government and is on course for victory in Benue State. 

This is according to the official results uploaded on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IREV) after the conclusion of the election on Saturday, March 18, 2023.

The APC candidate defeated his main opponents, Titus Uba of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and Herman Hembe of the Labour Party (LP), in what was described as a keenly contested election.

According to the official results on the IREV portal, the APC candidate polled a total of 420 votes, while the PDP candidate got only 1 vote, and the LP candidate scored zero votes in Fr. Alia's polling unit in the governorship election.

Fr. Alia is also leading across the state by a wide margin, according to the official uploaded results on the IREV portal so far. As at the time of writing this report, 4312 out of the 5102 total polling units in Benue State were uploaded on the IREV portal, amounting to 84.52% of the total polling units in Benue State.

The APC candidate expressed his gratitude to the people of his polling unit and Benue for the confidence they have shown in him and pledged to work tirelessly to ensure that the people of Benue State enjoy the dividends of democracy.

Fr. Alia made this known shortly after casting his vote to a crowd of journalists and media houses that came to witness the governorship and house of assembly elections in his polling unit yesterday.

He equally commended the National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies for a seamless exercise.

The election in Benue State was keenly contested by the major political parties, with each candidate promising to address the various challenges facing the state.

The outcome of the election has been described as a reflection of the wishes of the good people of Benue State, who have spoken through the ballot box. The successful conduct of the election has also been hailed by observers as free, fair, and credible.

At the moment, 11 local government areas have reported their results, and Fr. Hyacinth Alia of the APC is leading with an impressive 194,555 votes.

The opposition PDP has garnered 99,860 votes, which means that the margin of lead for the APC is a massive 94,695 votes!

It is no longer news that the incumbent Governor of Benue State, Mr. Samuel Ortom, has lost his bid for a Senate seat in a stunning upset
to Hon. Titus Zam of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the just-concluded Presidential and National Assembly elections.

In another surprising turn of events, the former governor of Benue State and serving senator, Rt. Hon. Gabriel Suswam, has also lost his
bid to return to the senate to Hon. Emmanuel Udende of the APC.

The announcement of Udende and Zam's victories at the polls has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of the state, as Ortom and Suswam were widely considered by many as leading candidates in the senatorial race to represent the people of Zones A and B,
respectively.

However, Governor Ortom’s campaign was plagued by allegations of unprecedented corruption, unpaid pensions, poor performance in office, and a failure to adequately support teachers and civil servants. As a result, many voters in Benue State have chosen to look elsewhere for leadership, leading to Udende and Zam's surprising victories.

Many pensioners in Benue State have long complained of being owed months or even years of payments by the PDP-led government of Governor Samuel Ortom. Despite repeated promises from Ortom to address the issue, little progress has been made in resolving the mess. This has led to frustration and anger among retired workers, who have been forced to rely on friends and family for support.

In addition to the pension calamity, many teachers and civil servants in Benue State have also complained of being owed, underpaid, and not able to work properly. Some have even alleged that their salaries have been withheld for months and years at a time, leaving them struggling to make ends meet. This has also led to widespread discontent and calls for
change in the state government.

Many Benue voters have also expressed frustration with what they see as a lackluster performance by the PDP-led government of Samuel Ortom for close to 8 years in office. Despite promising to improve the state's workers' welfare, infrastructure, and economy, critics say that little or no progress has been made in these areas. Some have also accused Ortom of failing to adequately address the security challenges facing the state, including clashes between farmers and herders.

In the end, these factors all played a significant role in Governor Ortom's defeat and the poor performance of the PDP in the just concluded presidential and national assembly elections.

While Ortom may have been a popular candidate in the past, his failure to address the concerns of pensioners, teachers, students, civil servants, and the entire Benue people ultimately cost him and other PDP candidates the support of many voters in Benue State, including my humble self.

As the state prepares for a new era of leadership, many are hoping that the incoming government of Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, PhD, come May 29, 2023, will be better equipped to tackle these pressing issues
and improve the lives of all the good people of Benue State.

On a historic day in the beautiful state of Benue, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia emerged as the winner of the APC Governorship Rerun Primaries with a staggering 219,002 votes, as announced in a wide broadcast by the Rerun Electoral Committee.

The rerun primaries was held in 11 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Benue State, including Gboko, Gwer-East, Gwer-West, Guma, Katsina-Ala, Logo, Makurdi, Otukpo, Tarka, Ukum, and Vandeikya, to firmly establish the nomination of the party's candidate for the governorship position in the coming general elections, and had a total of 229,417 accredited voters.

Despite the challenges posed by the scorching sun and hash weather conditions yesterday, 227,833 voters came out to cast their vote, making it a truly remarkable event.

It will be recalled that the APC first conducted governorship rerun primaries on 9th June, 2022, as witnessed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and declared Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia as the authentic winner.

Fr. Alia went into yesterday’s rerun with victories already in 12 LGAs of Benue State, including Kwande, Konshisha, Ushongo, Buruku, Agatu, Ogbadibo, Oju Okpokwu, Apa, Ohimini Obi, and Ado, with a total of 195,314 votes.

Having scored 195,314 votes in 12 LGAs on the 9th of June, 2022, and 219,002 votes in 11 LGAs on the 2nd of February, 2023, with a combined total of 414,316 votes, he was thereby declared the winner of the rerun primaries and the overall winner of the primaries conducted in the 23 LGAs of Benue State, having scored the highest number of votes cast.
