Massive Turnout as Tinubu Promises to Resettle Benue IDPs; Clear Backlog of Salaries

The Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), His Excellency, Sen. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has pledged to address the internal security challenges in Benue State and resettle all internally displaced persons (IDPs), create jobs for the youths, invest heavily in agriculture, and clear the backlog of workers’ salaries and pensions if elected as the next president, with Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia as the next governor of Benue State in the forthcoming elections.

Tinubu made this promise to a massive crowd of supporters yesterday, Thursday, 26th January, 2023, at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi, Benue State, the venue of the APC Presidential Campaign rally.

Tinubu promised to bring the IDPs back to their respective homes and end their misery. He vowed to clear the backlog of workers’ salaries and pensions in the state and also promised to return and spend a night with the good people of Benue State, before or after the general elections.

The APC presidential candidate accused the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) of deliberately sabotaging fuel supply in Nigeria in order to blackmail and discredit the APC-led federal government.

Addressing the mammoth crowd in Makurdi, Bola Tinubu accused the PDP of deliberately sabotaging fuel supply in the country as an avenue to blackmail the APC-led federal government. He highlighted his track record of achievements in Lagos State as governor and vowed to establish a loan scheme for students. The APC candidate also took a swipe at his PDP rival, Atiku Abubakar, and asked about his source of wealth.

He stated that the PDP looted the treasury, citing the 16 billion allegedly looted under the planned electricity transformation agenda and supervised by Atiku’s PDP. Bola Tinubu promised the Benue people that his party had come to give assurances of good governance, adding that his administration would ensure access to quality education and student loans to allow brilliant students in Benue State to excel irrespective of class or gender.

Tinubu said while in power, the People’s Democratic Party administration gave fuel retail licenses to their supporters, friends, and sympathizers, who are now hoarding fuel to create long queues across the country and make Nigerians suffer, adding that the PDP is a Poverty Development Party.

"They met good oil prices for 16 good years; they didn’t remember gas pipelines; they are what I called saboteurs yesterday. They gave PMS licenses to their supporters and sympathizers. They are the ones who started creating fake queues. PDP, enough is enough," Tinubu said of Atiku and the PDP.

The APC candidate, who also vowed to establish a loan scheme for students, told the people that his party, the APC, had come to give assurances of good governance.

"Dear Benue people, I stand before you today to share with you the truth about the state of our nation and the evil actions of the PDP. They have been deliberately sabotaging fuel supply in an attempt to blackmail our APC-led government. But I ask you, do we want to continue living under their corrupt and ineffective leadership? The massive crowd yelled back, "Noooo!"

I come to you with a proven track record of achievements as governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007.

I pledge to establish a loan scheme for students, so that every brilliant and indigent person has access to quality education.

In contrast, my PDP rival, Atiku Abubakar, cannot answer for the source of his wealth. The PDP has looted our country to a pulp, as evidenced by the $16 billion allegedly stolen under the Planned Electricity Transformation Agenda, which was supervised by Atiku's party, the PDP.

But I assure you, the APC has come to give you assurances of good governance. We will work tirelessly to ensure access to quality education and education loans for all students. Together, we can build a better future for our country.

The incoming president also took a swipe at his Labor Party rival, Peter Obi. Tinubu stated, "I am proud of what we have accomplished in Lagos State when we had the opportunity to govern." I am so proud of it; I did not run off to live elsewhere. I lived where my policies and programs worked. Obi left Anambra because his policies and programs failed. "Just as we improved Lagos State, we shall lead Nigeria to its greatest destiny."

Speaking to the needs of the Benue people, Tinubu promised to establish agricultural and industrial hubs, which would help expand businesses and improve local incomes. He also promised to make Benue a global leader in agriculture and bring further income to the state and the country at large.

Tinubu was quoted as saying, "Rather than just growing food crops, you will package, process, and brand food items for other African and global markets for exportation." My administration will establish commodity exchange boards to guarantee prices for important crops, ensuring that you receive a fair wage for your efforts. On his agricultural plan, he said he would establish agricultural hubs and improve access to finance. Both of these will enable you to modernize farm operations, improve productivity, and reduce labor through 21st century mechanized farming tools.

Working with the state government, we will encourage mining in the state in a regulated and sustainable way that benefits your communities and gives the laborer a just wage for his daily work. Limestone, lead, tin, and marble will be extracted and sold locally and internationally to stimulate the economy and enrich the people.

My administration will also invest in the quality of our democratic governance and in the democratic security that we must have. We have heard your pleas. We know of the insecurity, of the violent clashes, and of the loss of lives and property.

Our security agenda will work. It will protect the people and secure the land. My national security plan invests heavily in surveillance equipment and the land. "We will mobilize the totality of our national security assets to protect all Nigerians from real danger and from the real fear of danger."

Speaking at the rally, the former governor of Benue State, who is also the current Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, His Excellency, Sen. The ancient city of Gboko was thrown into frenzy yesterday, Tuesday, January 10, 2023, as thousands of Benue people lined the streets to welcome the incoming governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, and his deputy, Dr. Sam Ode, together with the leader of the APC in Benue State, Sen. Dr. George Akume, the Honorable Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, when they arrived the administrative headquarters of the Tiv Nation for the official flag-off of the Alia/Ode 2023 governorship campaign.

The event, which took place at the NKST Primary School Playground in Genyi, Yandev, Gboko LGA of Benue State, was filled to capacity as the APC Governorship Candidate, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, officially flagged off his governorship campaign.

Party members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other supporters from across the country thronged the venue of the rally as early as 7 a.m. yesterday to flag off the "Alialization Gubernatorial Campaign" for a Greater Benue, which will reach the nooks and crannies of all the local government areas in the state.

Fr. Alia said with all the pain inflicted on the Benue people by the PDP-led administration in the state, he expected the good people of Benue to vote them out in the coming elections and urged them to cast their votes for him and the APC.

He assured the people of good governance when elected into office and equally called on aggrieved members to shield their swords and return so that they could build the party and deliver dividends of democracy to the Benue people together, while calling on the good people of Benue State to go out en masse, collect their voter cards, and vote for APC candidates from top to bottom.

The incoming governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, also took time to eloquently outline his policy document titled "A Strategic Development Plan for a Greater Benue."


“Fellow party members, today is the culmination of what started some months ago. In a very salient way, we are gathered today to formally flag off our campaign that had informally flagged off in our hearts months ago after our primaries. I commend your resilience. You have all stood firm in the face of political and legal turbulence that characterized our victory at the primaries. Leadership is given by God. But politics is not a one man game, but a game of the many. Every one contributes his or her quota to arrive at victory. I therefore stand here publicly today, to say that my gubernatorial candidacy has not been due to my overwhelming intelligence. In every contest, one person would always take the lead. This is more of a struggle than politics. It is more a movement than a contest. I therefore once again call on our aggrieved brothers to shield their swords; my arms are stretched out for an amicable embrace. Let us team up to rescue the soul of our dear state, Benue, from the abyss of gross maladministration as perpetrated by this PDP government. It is not so much a personal struggle but a collective effort for the emancipation of Benue State.

Today we gather here to answer a call to return Benue State to responsibility and accountability. Ours is to shape governance in a way that the citizens can gleefully follow, with confidence in their leadership. In more ways than one, this is what has been lacking in the present administration. The citizens have lost hope in a government that has brazenly, in broad day light misused the general heritage and commonwealth of the Benue people.

Today, more Benue indigenes live in utter penury. The difference between the unemployed and the civil servant is almost nonexistent. A grossly depleted civil service, non-existent bureaucracy, lack of incentives and ghost workers syndrome govern our public sector. Civil servants are perennially scared of retirement where all their years of servitude are discountenanced by a malicious administration that wickedly subjects them to a life of pain and dejection with their pensions and gratuities denied them. For eight years there has been massive diversion of state finances for personal gains with impunity. Above all, the local government, as a tier of government has been rendered completely dysfunctional.

Benue State rightly is nationally acclaimed 'Food Basket of the Nation'. However, farming no longer holds any incentives to our teaming farming population who are abandoned and without farm input such as fertilizer, quality seeds and mechanized implements. The little that is produced is ravished away due to lack of storage facilities, while there are no rural roads to convey the products to the markets. The lack of agricultural extension services means our rural dwellers are mentally stocked in archaic ways of farming which limit their general output and dividends at the end of the cropping season. Two major rivers, the rivers Benue and Katsina Ala dissect the Benue topography, alongside many subsidiary streams and water ways, limitless Fadama, all lying in waste for lack of enhanced irrigation for all year round farming which is the best form of modern agriculture.

Every sector of the Benue state economy requires a peculiar intervention. Our educational sector that has become nearly comatose. In most rural settings, entire primary schools lack the teachers to run them with many closing down. There are no positive inducements to lure our youths into teaching which ordinarily is the noblest profession. The school feeding program of the federal government, a plausible policy aimed at encouraging school enrollment especially in the villages has become a major conduit pipe for siphoning resources meant for the human capital development of our people in Benue State.

The failures of this administration are out there in the public domain for all to behold. I will therefore not spend your precious time on futile lamentations, which cannot deliver us from the present rot.

Fellow Benue compatriots, many years ago, I offered myself to go into the Catholic Priesthood to re-route lost eternal destinies and prepare people spiritually for eternity. The work of a priest is not restricted to pulpit alone but to ensure that there are basic necessities here on earth which if denied that spiritual work for eternity becomes foolhardy. In the church, or outside of it, honesty, integrity and accountability are not just relevant, but necessary. And without which life becomes brutish. The same people that are in the church are also in the civil service, in the markets, on the farms and even in politics etc. All these people are lamenting, and truly, the church must act, even as the good news must be preached in all aspects of our society. Somebody must take the bull by the horns and halt the destructive slide we are experiencing. Hence, I have joined the teeming good people of Benue to take the state out of the woods.

The PDP candidate comes with the mantra to continue from where the incumbent governor would leave. What a pity! What is there to continue from? He says that Benue has made great progress under his mentor. Well, we don’t blame him; his would be continuation of lack of capacity, ineptitude, uncertainty, under-development, hunger and insecurity.

Essentials for comfortable living have continued to elude Benue people. With hope denied, many pensioners have died, leaving their families destitute. Many must have died with anger in their hearts, anger towards the government that has perpetrated and perpetuated such injustice on them.

But our God is a just God.

Therefore, Distinguished Ladies and gentlemen, our merciful God has endowed us with adequate knowledge and exposure to render leadership differently when we take over the government of Benue state and ensure justice, security and peace to Benue. We shall be leveraging on the following to move the state forward -
i. A huge human capital from a growing and educated population. (Benue boasts of some of the brightest and fertile minds in Nigeria).
ii. Large and fertile land mass across the state - from where the state rightly derives its name as the 'food basket' of the nation.
iii. Abundant agricultural and mineral resources.
iv. Great potentials for oil and gas exploration.
v. Existence of rivers. This can enhance irrigation practices that can yield year round.
vi. Massive capacity and raw materials for industrialization.
vii. Existence of reputable educational institutions in the state. (The products of these are left to loiter without gainful employment).
viii. Existence of immense economic potentials in tourism and hospitality.
ix. Existence of indigenous knowledge systems.
We have done our researches and planning and shall hit the ground running immediately we are sworn in, turning all these potentials into viable and verifiable achievements that would propel our state to an enviable position amongst the community of Nigerian states.

This failed PDP state government has already gone down. But we must deliberately arise and be willing to be used of God to bring His will to come to pass in Benue State. Much more is demanded of you and me. After the flag off today, you should not go to sleep. We are not underrating our opponents, having seen their desperation; they can do anything to retain themselves in power to inflict more pains on our great people. We must sacrifice our comfort, our energy, our sleep and our resources for a greater Benue. I therefore call on the good people of Benue State to go out en-mass and collect your voters’ cards and vote for APC Candidates from top to bottom.”

The event also witnessed the mass decamping of members of other political parties, including the PDP, Labour Party, APGA, SDP, and NNPP (who collapsed all their state excos) into the All Progressives Party (APC).

Fr. Alia, alongside the leader of the APC in Benue State, Sen. George Akume, and the Honorable Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Alh. Mu’azu Bawa Rijau, National APC Vice Chairman, North Central, who represented the APC National Chairman, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, received and welcomed decampees into the APC. They assured them of fair and equal treatment, praising their wise decision to dump the sinking political parties.

In conclusion, Fr. Alia thanked the Benue electorate for their unwavering support for him and the All Progressives Congress (APC) and urged them to elect him, the presidential candidate of our great party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and other candidates of the party for efficient service delivery.

The Benue State capital, Makurdi, in North Central Nigeria, has been hit by severe flooding, with reports of at least 30 people being killed and leaving many residents of Makurdi stranded.

It is estimated that more than 100,000 people have been affected by the floods, and the death toll is expected to rise.

The flood, which started on Wednesday night, was caused by a heavy downpour that lasted for several days, causing rivers to overflow their banks and displacing over 100,000 people, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

The worst affected areas are said to be in the capital city of Makurdi, where most of the deaths have been reported.

The downpour which caused the flood also destroyed houses, farms, crops, businesses, and other properties worth millions of Naira, and has left many people without access to shelter, clean water, or food.

The Nigerian Red Cross Society is leading the response effort, and has so far distributed relief materials to more than 5,000 people, according to eyewitness reports.

There are also reports that the Benue State government has declared a state of emergency in the affected areas and has set up relief camps to cater for the displaced people.

The federal government has also deployed a team of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) officials to the state to assist in the relief efforts.

We appeal to all Nigerians to pray for the people of Benue State at this difficult time. We also call on the federal and state governments to provide all the necessary assistance to the affected communities.

BREAKING: Nigerian Students Blocks Lagos Airport Due To ASUU Strike

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has shut down highways leading to Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos.

The mass action is in continuation of their protest against the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The Nigerian students, who defied the heavy rainfall, caused gridlock on the road leading to the Lagos International Airport, leaving numerous travelers stranded with no hope in sight.

The News Brewery spotted personnel from the Lagos Airport Police Command and other security forces on the scene.

The protesting students waved banners and chanted Aluta songs to express their disappointment and anger at the federal government's inability to put an end to ASUU's industrial action.

As funny as this video may sound, the guy is actually saying the truth.

The major problem is not always with the president but with all of us electing incompetent governors, senators, reps, and state assembly members, etc.

When Obasanjo was President, Nigerians hated him until he left office. When Yar'Adua arrived, Nigerians despised him so much and even nicknamed him Mr. Go Slow, but just as he began to perform, death struck. Jonathan came, and the animosity continued until he was voted out.

Today, President Muhammadu Buhari is equally enjoying the same energy.

Nigerians have a proclivity towards forgetting things easily. This is part of the reason many Nigerians today wish to return to the era of Obasanjo/Atiku or Jonathan.

I am not a prophet, but I see many Nigerians hating the next president more and wishing to return to the era of Buhari tomorrow if we fail to do the needful in 2023.

We have been saying this every single day and nobody is paying attention.

I have said this before and will say it again, that if we channel half of the energy and pressure we put on the president to our governors, senators, representatives, state assembly members, chairmen, and councilors, Nigeria will become greater than the US and UK put together in the next few years.

But until we start electing credible candidates with a proven track record of accomplishments, from councilor to president, irrespective of party affiliations, nothing will change.

Governance: Governor Zulum of Borno Vs Governor Ortom of Benue!

The current governor of Benue State, Pastor Samuel Ortom, has sited insecurity as the reason his government has failed to deliver on his numerous campaign promises. So therefore, I have decided to compare his government with that of Borno State, which is the epicenter of insecurity in Nigeria, and how both governors are tackling insecurity.

Our people need to understand that poor leadership leads to insecurity. The quality of governance is central to any state's ability to maintain order and bring peace to its territory. The challenges faced by both states are due to the accumulation of failed policies, poor leadership, and a lack of capacity over the years.

The security situation in our country has worsened with time and we have regrettably lost more lives than what we should have lost if we had better leaders who could deliver on their campaign promises across the nation after being elected into power by Nigerians during elections.

Benue State and Borno State are two states with many similarities, except in leadership style and approach.

Both states were created in the same year, in 1976. They have Muslim governor and a Muslim deputy governor in Borno State, the same way we have a Christian governor and a Christian deputy governor in Benue State.

They both start with the letter B and both have issues of security, although the magnitude of the security challenges in Borno State is far greater than that of Benue State. Both states share an international border with Cameroon, and both have fertile lands for agricultural purposes.

The security challenges in both states have created a huge humanitarian crisis, no doubt, with millions of internally displaced people.

Let’s take a look at how the governors of Benue and Borno are addressing the challenges below.

The Governor of Borno State, Prof. Zulum, understands that the insecurity situation in the country is a leadership deficiency, alleged to have been attributed to some key factors, which include corruption, poverty, unemployment, poor leadership, weak judiciary system, and poor government policies, etc., and the governor is doing everything humanly possible to address the root causes of these challenges with good governance, and today, the insecurity in Borno State has been reduced by more than 80%. His leadership approache has succeeded in chasing terrorists away from the North-East to the North-West.

Let’s take a look at what Zulum is doing in Borno State.

In his first 100 days as governor of Borno State, Prof. Zulum executed 120 projects. In one year, Zulum delivered 326 physical projects and 49 capital-intensive programs and policies.

Among Zulum’s 326 physical projects were more than 6,000 urban and low-cost houses for the resettlement of IDPs and refugees who fled from attacks by Book Harm.

The list includes 76 capital projects in education, which include new schools with 21st century facilities. There were 46 projects on health care services, which included 37 primary healthcare centers. 40 capital projects on infrastructure, which included new roads and the ongoing construction of Borno’s first flyover with upper and lower lanes.

Also in the list were 18 capital projects: rural and urban electrification; drilling of 213 new boreholes with distribution lines and rehabilitation of 335 existing boreholes; maintenance of the Maiduguri water treatment plant; and mega water facilities.

Using combined approaches to tackle Boko-haram and humanitarian outcomes, Zulum donated 300 operational vehicles (at once) and logistics to the Nigerian Armed Forces, he increased the monthly allowances of volunteers, like civilian JTF, and recruited over 1,000 vigilantes to help in the fight against terrorism.

Zulum also became Borno’s chief humanitarian officer, touring communities to supervise livelihood support.

Through investment, Zulum facilitated the restoration of civil authorities, agriculture, and self-employment through massive investment via a vocational training institute in Muna, which has 14 workshops for the training of displaced persons with a variety of entrepreneurial skills.

In his second year in office, Zulum surpassed the 326 projects delivered in the first year and has even launched a 25-year recovery and development plan, which has been implemented.

Today, he has delivered over 500 projects in the last three years, including 21 mega schools with 21st century facilities, which include primary, secondary, and sub-tertiary schools in 13 local government areas of Borno State.

Recently, during a late-night visit to General Hospital in Monguno, Zulum announced the approval of a 30% salary increase for doctors in seven local government areas with peculiarities.

Aside from medical doctors, nurses, midwives, lab technicians, pharmacists, and other health workers will also benefit from a 20% salary increment aimed at motivating them to deliver quality and affordable health care services.

In a similar vein, Governor Zulum unveiled 90 units of mass transit buses to enhance the operations of Borno Express Corporation, a public transportation services company owned by the state government.

The buses include 40 units of 50-seaters and 50 units of 14-seaters, all of which have a combined capacity of 2,740 passengers.

Zulum also approved and handed over a cheque of N12 billion for the payment of gratuities for 4,862 retirees owed by his predecessors.

Just recently, Zulum handed over 81 units of three-bedroom apartments along with cheques worth a total of N79 million to 81 medical doctors working in Borno State.

Let me stop here. Apologies to Zulum for not capturing all his achievements.

But through hard work, selflessness, commitment, and dedication to his people, he has emerged as a true servant leader who has restored hope in the midst of adversity.

THE APPROACH BY THE BENUE STATE GOVERNOR

The Governor of Benue State, Pastor Samuel Ortom, on the other hand, seems helpless about the root causes of the insecurity in the country and believes that it is by propaganda, crying or shouting, equipping his boys to insult his political opponents publicly, and jumping from one TV station to the other that will solve the problem.

Let’s take a look at what Ortom is doing in Benue State.

In his first 100 days as governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom was begging Benue people for patience, for there were absolutely no projects to commission.

“He stated that his administration has achieved meaningfully within 100 days but will rather appeal to the Benue people to be patient with him because he is committed to running government with the fear of God, forgiveness, fairness, selflessness, reconciliation, and integration to enhance peace and development in order to remove the state from the shackles of poverty.” good man!

He made the above statement on the occasion of his 100th day in office without mentioning any single project.

After one year in office, Ortom renovated the School of Nursing and Midwives, Makurdi, Benue State, and empowered the youths with plenty of wheelbarrows to hustle.

Some of his notable achievements after seven years include the failed Amnesty Program; the enactment of the Anti-Opening Grazing Law with a faulty implementation; the construction of less than 1 km of roads in the state capital; the commissioning of a single borehole in Kwande; and the conversion of the Cargo Airport signage to IDP Mega City.

The achievements of Governor Samuel Ortom in seven years look like the achievements of councilors in the South. This is very shameful to say the least.

Benue State has become a brewery of hunger, poverty, unemployment, corruption, and underdevelopment under the leadership of Governor Samuel Ortom despite earning close to 1 trillion Naira through monthly allocation disbursed by the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), alongside the State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), loans, bailout funds, Paris Club Refund, and other sources from June 2015 to December, 2021.

Yet our governor still owes teachers more than 13 months in arrears; 8 months for state civil servants; 12 months for local government staff; and 6 years for local government pensioners.

Yet Benue State is still struggling with a very high debt profile and insecurity despite receiving millions of security votes to protect the Benue people.

This clearly demonstrates that our Governor is the laziest public servant in Nigeria; he sits idle and waits for federal allocation from Abuja every month, unable to think outside the box in addressing our numerous challenges.

The achievements of Professor Babagana Umara Zulum in 3 years have not only surpassed the achievements of Governor Samuel Ortom in 7 years but those of Benue State since 2007 despite the insecurity challenges.

This is shameful and embarrassing, but 2023 has presented us with another opportunity to vote for credible candidates in order to end the activities of evil men with zero conscience parading as politicians in Benue State and the country at large.

I wish our constitution had allowed for the transfer of governors from one state to another.

Personally, I would have preferred the current Muslim/Muslim leadership in Borno State to the current Christian/Christian leadership in Benue State, and I would have applied for the transfer of that meaningful leadership in Borno to Benue.

NB: I predict that some people may find my comparison or exposition of these concerns inadequately balanced. For this allegation, I stand guilty as charged.

A leader who understands that the people are the power of democracy and will always lead by example.

A leader who can identify and fix little things that matter to the people.

Benue State requires a visionary leader who is also up-to-date with creativity and 21st-century innovations.

A leader who understands the plight of the poor, the struggles of the unemployed, the daily struggles of an average Okada man or taxi driver on the streets of Benue State, the daily challenges of the neglected Benue youths, the unappealing learning environment of Benue students, the poverty of the widowed, the daily challenges of market men and women, the numerous challenges of an ordinary farmer, and the financial conditions of Benue workers, pensioners, and the less privileged.

A leader who understands the inner pain and challenges of a pepper, tomato, orange, or mango seller whose goods are about to be rotten or wasted because of a lack of storage facilities to preserve them.

Benue needs a competent and compassionate leader who will show sympathy and concern for the poor, disabled, and internally displaced people.

A leader who will promote our state's socio-economic recovery and also create millions of jobs for young people through agriculture, ICT, and other channels.

A leader who will also promote issues like how to provide constant power supply, housing, and adequate food for the people.

A leader who will provide basic education and affordable healthcare for all, with 21st century facilities.

A leader who will never use our common wealth for personal aggrandizement or opulence.

Benue needs a leader with a track record of accomplishments.

A leader with a burning desire for the progress and development of our dear state.
