If you know his family, why not ask them to get in touch with the car owner to clear his name? Why are you here yarning rubbish? Do you think the car owner would not have tried to locate the guy, his address, the guarantors he gave or his relatives, (if any), before going public? It is usually after people have done such things without recording much success, that they now go public.

Your friend may have changed from the days you knew him in university, or circumstances may have pushed him into crime. Do not vouch for anybody who is not family. If you can help locate the guy or you have details of his whereabouts, then PM the OP.
