Business / Weekly Insights: Creating Wealth Through Fixed Income Securities by froz(m): 10:32am On Jul 14, 2017
There are huge opportunities in the Nigerian fixed income securities market for investors to create wealth. Investment in fixed income securities presents an opportunity for investors with a preference for low risk to generate regular income and reduce the volatility of the return on their investment portfolio. Fixed income instruments are used by governments and corporate organisations to borrow money from the investing public, to finance their activities either on a short-term or long-term basis. The issuers are the borrowers while the investors are the lenders. The issuers of the debt instruments promise to pay interest to the investors on a predetermined basis until the maturity date. In most cases, the issuer pays the principal amount to the investor on the maturity date. The price of a traded fixed income instrument may appreciate or depreciate between the issue date and the maturity date but the price moves to the par value on the maturity date.

The issuers of the debt instruments promise to pay interest to the investors on a predetermined basis until the maturity date
Some of the risks associated with fixed income securities investment are: default risk and reinvestments risk. Some fixed income securities don’t pay interest, as such they are issued at a discount to the face value and are redeemed on maturity at the face value. The Nigerian Government Treasury Bills (NTBs) are short-term debt obligations backed by the FGN with a maturity not more than one year. They are issued at a discount to the face value. This means that the amount that investors invest is lower than what they receive at maturity and they are not paid intermediate interest. Commercial Papers (CPs) are issued by corporate organisations to finance short-term obligations of not more than 270 days and are usually issued at a discount to face value. Some fixed income securities however pay interest, called coupon, at pre-determined time intervals such as semi-annually or quarterly.

The Nigerian Government Treasury Bills (NTBs) are short- term debt obligations backed by the FGN with a maturity not more than one year.
Fixed income instruments in Nigeria include: The Federal Government of Nigeria Bonds (FGN Bonds), State Government Bonds (SG Bonds), NTBs and CPs. The Debt Management Office (DMO) issues the FGN Bonds on behalf of the FGN and the tenor ranges from 3 to 20 years. The FGN has an obligation to pay the bondholders the principal and agreed interest as and when due. The instruments issued by the FGN (NTBs and FGN Bonds) are considered the safest of all investments in the domestic debt market because they are backed by the ‘full faith and credit’ of the FGN. The FGN has never defaulted in the payment of interest and principal due to investors. Thus the default risk is low but the FGN Bonds face reinvestment risks because of changes in interest rate in the economy. At the moment, the interest income earned on Bonds, CPs and NTBs are tax free.

The instruments issued by the FGN (NTBs and FGN Bonds) are considered the safest of all investments in the domestic debt market because they are backed by the ‘full faith and credit’ of the FGN.
In March 2017, the FGN introduced the FGN Savings Bond, to promote a savings culture among Nigerians, while giving retail investors the opportunity to earn income from a secure investment. The FGN Savings Bond is issued monthly in tenors of 2 and 3 years, with quarterly interest payments. The minimum subscription amount is N5,000 with additions in multiples of N1,000, subject to a maximum of N50 million. There are also mutual funds that have fixed income securities as their underlying assets. Mutual Funds are good investment vehicles that promote savings and investments. The Net Asset Value of Fixed Income Securities Funds in Nigeria grew from N57billion in 2014 to N165billion as at May 2017 according to data from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This shows the increasing interest in these instruments as investment vehicle for Nigerians and Nigerian entities to growth wealth.

There are also mutual funds that have fixed income securities as their underlying assets. Mutual Funds are good investment vehicles that promote savings and investments
The average yield on the FGN Bond as at June 29, 2017 was around 16%. The average yield on the 330-day NTB was 18%, while the average yields on some selected Non-Bank CPs and Bank CPs were 20% and 21% respectively. Most of these yields are higher than the latest inflation rate of 16.25%. With consistent investment in fixed income securities, investors can create and grow wealth while providing the needed capital to the issuers to finance developments in the domestic economy.

Crime / Budgit Launches Corruption-reporting Website by froz(m): 9:34am On Jul 14, 2017
BudgIT, a civic organisation that uses tech tools to simplify budget and matters of public spending for citizens, has launched,www.reportyourself.org, a new website for Nigerians to report instances of everyday corruption by agents of the government.

The platform which was developed in collaboration with the Religious Leaders Anti-Corruption Committee (RLAC), the Socio-Economic Rights & Accountability Project (SERAP) and the Social Economic Rights Action Center was funded by the United States Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement.

Speaking at the launch in Lagos on Wednesday, the Senior Manager, Project, BudgIT, Stanley Achonu, said that the new tool would enable Nigerians curb petty corruption involving low-level civil servants and agents of government which he noted if left unaddressed, would graduate to “grand corruption” when such civil servants rise to prominent positions in government.

“We thought of a tool to monitor corruption starting from the low-level because, petty corruption kills. There is the grand corruption in Nigeria. Grand corruption starts as petty corruption with low- level civil servants engaged in demanding bribes for
procurement of driving license, granting bail (police), or at the marriage registry.”

The Deputy Chief of Mission, US Embassy, David Young, noted that the cost of corruption is not measured only in the humongous money lost such as the 45 million dollars recovered by the EFCC from the Ikoyi flat but in the daily pains suffered by ordinary Nigerians in their everyday lives as a result of corruption.

Young said that the new platform would put the power to report and fight corruption in the palms of Nigerians and expressed hope that it would galvanize a new movement for citizen engagement in the country.

“It(Reportyourself.org)will offer Nigerians opportunity to instantly report acts of corruption,” he said, adding, “I hope that the new tool starts a new movement for citizens engagement in Nigeria.”

Career / Global Interns Holds Career Guidance Workshop For Students In Lagos by froz(m): 9:24am On Jul 13, 2017
Global Interns Nigeria, a student-centred organisation has concluded plans on its first phase of career guidance workshop dubbed “The Career Connect Series” for students in high schools and universities. It will hold on Tuesday August 22 at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The workshop, which is aimed at enhancing the perception of students on the right career path and prospects associated with them, will feature facilitators from various professions to address critical issues students encounter when making career choices.

Chief Executive Officer of Global Interns Nigeria, Mrs. Olufunmilayo Modupe said there is need to groom and properly guide today’s youths on career paths, which is the overall objective of the workshop.

She stated that the workshop will help teenagers to understand the meaning of career choices through engaging sessions suitable for learning and networking. “It promises to be practical and interactive sessions between students and facilitators,” she assured.

Modupe further explained that students are stereotyped when making career decisions, which were sometimes in line with the desire of their parents, without looking at the prospects or satisfaction in their choices.

“This workshop provides a platform for students to enable them understand the meaning of career choices,” she further said.

This is to avoid the challenges faced by students who find it difficult to make proper career choices before entering tertiary institutions, leading to a large number of them losing interest in their course of study and also finding it difficult to secure satisfactory job.

In some cases, such people have their aspirations dashed and it becomes too late to reverse the trend.

According to Modupe, this is where proper career guidance becomes very relevant to fill the gap, which is what Global Interns aims to achieve. She added that career counselling has always been important but it only recently got the recognition it deserves.

“There should be an understanding of what course to choose and whether capabilities match interests. This is what Global Interns career guidance workshop intends to achieve, to stop students from making such mistakes,” she added.

The workshop will help participants figure out who they are; the right career choice to make; identify factors that influences such career development; and help assess their interests, abilities, and values among others.

Interested participants are required to send the word “student” and school name to 09095693593 or 07037091407 via the short message service (SMS) platform for registration.

Global Interns Nigeria is a student-centred organisation connecting college and high school interns of predominantly Nigerian extraction to lifelong rewarding internship jobs and volunteering programmes in Nigeria and Ghana. It also provides professional and sound career advisory services to all its student subscribers.

TV/Movies / Top 50 Operators Take Two-thirds Of Global Pay Tv Subs by froz(m): 8:56pm On Jul 12, 2017
Pay TV subscriptions for 522 operators reached 839 million in 2016 – or 87% of the 959 million global subscribers. The top 50 operators accounted for two-thirds of the world’s pay TV subscribers by end-2016. At that time, 15 operators had more than 10 million paying subscribers, according to the Global Pay TV Operator Databook.

China Radio & TV is the world’s largest pay TV operator by a long, long way. Government policy to consolidate cable TV means that China Radio & TV quickly became the world’s largest pay TV operator, with 227 million subs by end-2016 – more than the next 11 operators combined.

Top 10 Operators by Subscribers (‘000)
Ranking Operator Country 2016
1 China Radio & TV (total) China 226,535
2 China Telecom (IPTV) China 52,038
3 BesTV (IPTV) China 26,019
4 AT&T (total) USA 25,065
5 Comcast (total) USA 22,508
6 Charter merged (total cable) USA 16,836
7 Dish TV (satellite) India 13,582
8 Hathway (total) India 13,300
9 Den Networks (total) India 13,000
10 DISH Network (satellite) USA 12,521
Digital TV Research
Simon Murray, Principal Analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “China’s and India’s dominance of the top pay TV operator rankings is increasing, partly as their subs bases climb but also due to US operators losing subscribers.”

Subscription and PPV revenues for the 522 operators were $185 billion in 2016. From the total, 30 pay TV operators earned more than $1 billion in revenues in 2016. The global TV revenue share for the top 10 operators was 55% in 2016, with the top 50 operators taking three-quarters of the total.

With low ARPUs and despite high subs numbers, Asia Pacific’s top operators are much less prominent in the subscription and PPV revenue rankings. This is where the US companies come to the fore – with six of the top 10 in 2016.

Business / eFinance Launches To Provide Nigerians With Loans by froz(m): 10:53am On Jul 12, 2017
When it comes to obtaining loans from banks in Nigeria, the process is never easy. But recently, obtaining loans has been easier than ever before, as a number of FinTech startups have sprung up to attend to this need, allowing Nigerians access funds whenever they need it.

eFinance is one of the few startups providing quick and easy loans to Nigerians. The platform is financial services provider offering short term loans between N100,000-N2,000,000 to customers with evidence of monthly income.

Users who want to obtain loans can have their funds within a short while by simply showing valid means of identification (Work ID & Government Issued ID), bank statement for the last 6months and letter of employment/last promotion.

Following application approval, users then confirm the amount and duration they are most comfortable with by using an online calculator available on the platform. The eFinance team then send a notification if your loan application is successful or not. If successful the requested loan is deposited into users’ account within 24 hours of the approval.
The eFinance team promises to give loans that are free of additional charges to monthly repayment if all payments are made once due on time, and claims to process loans quickly.

With the difficulty of accessing loans in Nigeria, eFinance, despite having a number of competitors, has a chance of winning the hearts of millions of Nigerians who are ready to do all it takes to access funds.

Business / Daily Market Report: Fixed Income, Money Market And Fx – July 11 2017 by froz(m): 10:41am On Jul 12, 2017
News Update:
The federal government Monday disclosed that it would restructure the total debts owed to service providers in Nigeria’s privatised electricity market by the 11 electricity distribution companies (Discos) with the aim of easing the debt burden and allowing them to source for monies to fund their capital projects. – Thisday”

“The bond market remained lethargic with minimal activities witnessed during the trading session. We saw some local demand for the 2020 and 2022 bonds while other maturities traded flat. Yields compressed by 1bp across the curve. We expect a quiet trading session tomorrow as the FGN bond auction takes center stage.

The T-bills market traded with mixed sentiments with some buys on the short end and profit taking on the medium and long end of the curve. Consequently, yields declined by an average of 61bps on the short end while the medium and long tenured bills appreciated by an average of 9bps. The CBN continued with its OMO auctions today, selling a total of N24.6billion OMO T-bills with rates clearing at 17.95% and 18.55% on the 199day and 360day maturities. We expect the market to remain largely driven by the liquidity conditions in the money market.

The liquidity conditions in the money market improved in today’s session as the OBB and O/N rates fell to 15% and 16.17% from 25% levels. This was as a result of cash inflows from Retail FX refunds by the CBN. Market Liquidity is estimated at N68billion negative as at close of business today. We expect rates to trend slightly higher tomorrow as the CBN continues to mop up liquidity via its daily OMO and FX auctions.”
