The argument in the story i posted is strong i agree.

Still, I appreciate my parents for Circumsing my privates. I can't imagine what gig i would have become if my privates had a fore skin, ehew, Its a phycological thing attached to culture & religion and society, it goes a long way to affect the way we live.
Well, I hope you aren't a hypocrite then, and do not criticise female circumcision, as that too is rooted in tradition, culture and society.

It is a poll alright. But whats the use of a poll thats not guided by hard facts. The facts here are overwhelming.Simply incontrovertible.I am talking about the medical facts. It is simple-the health of the uncircumcised individual is greatly and perpetually compromised throughout life with the continue presence of the ugly fore-skin.
So,the big question? What is the basis for the argument?Argument only arises when issues are subjects to differing opinion based on differing backgrounds and prejudices.Definitely not one that will call public health to question. It is like questioning the old simple practice of wash-hands-before meals, when u can freely do otherwise. This borders on hygiene my people. It is not a subject for controversy. What on earth made it so in the first place?
And where, praytell, are your facts, my friend?

All men are born and created with the foreskin. Man has lived for thousands of years with the foreskin intact. Rome conquered the world and its men were not circumcised.

Europe and Latin America do not routinely circumcise their men and they have lower rates of HIV and STDs than Africa as a whole. So exactly what facts, what hygeine, and what science are you basing this on?

You see what I said about the circumcised male's defense mechanism to desperately rationalize this procedure? Sad.

Thank God someone said circumcision is not a christian thing.
Some people still think they are doing it for religion(Christianity)!

I am also happy that this is being discussed because many people in Nigeria think it is
absurd not to circumcise a male child just because it is not common around here.

I get upset when people say something is abnormal for no reason other than the fact that they are not familiar with it.

Uncircumcised male organ is ugly to you because you have been seeing circumcised ones all your life! another person may see the circumcised one as ugly too.

It is the same way you may not fancy a white woman because she does not have 'ikebe' and a white man may not fancy a black woman because she has thick lips anda flat nose.

Does it mean the two are ugly?

By the way I have a circumcised son and it was my decision based on many things but I respect the decision of any other parent be it for/against circumcision.

So please think beyond the limitations of your environment.
Here, here! I applaud your post whole heartedly. Finally, some common sense.

Whoever said that you never see uncircumcised men in pornos, lol. You clearly don't know much about the normal penis. The foreskin pulls back when the p.enis is erect, so you wouldn't be likely to tell the difference unless the camera zoomed in.

Ignorance is bliss, o.

More quotes from the Bible:

Romans 3:29-30

Does God belong to the Jews alone?  Is he not also the God of the
Gentiles?  Yes, of the Gentiles, too.  It is the same God who justifies
the circumcised and the uncircumcised on the basis of faith.

Romans 4:9-12

Does this blessedness apply only to the circumcised, or to the
uncircumcised as well?  For we say that Abraham's faith was "credited as
justice."  What were the circumstances in which it was credited?  Was
it after he was circumcised or before?  It was before.  In fact, he
received the sign of circumcision as a seal attesting to the justice
received through faith while he was still uncircumcised.  Thus he was to
be the father of all the uncircumcised who believe
, so that for them too
faith might be credited as justice, as well as the father of those
circumcised who are not merely so but who follow the path of faith which
Abraham walked while still uncircumcised.

THIS PASSAGE IN THE BIBLE MAKES IT VERY CLEAR THAT CIRCUMCISION IS NOT THE CHRISTIAN THING TO DO:

1 Corinthians 7:18-19

Was someone called after he had been circumcised?  He should not try to
hide his circumcision.  Did the call come to another who had never been
circumcised?  He is not to be circumcised.  Circumcision counts for
nothing, and its lack makes no difference either.
What matters is keeping
God's commandments.

CIRCUMCISION IS NOT A CHRISTIAN THING. PERIOD.

i left nigeria to come to the US at the age of 10 , also i have seen a patient with phimosis, needless to say the dude was in soo much pain and i have never ever heard of women having phimosis before. maybe its possible but i have never read it anywhere or heard of it. last but not least yes people do have water and soap, but yet they still don't keep their privates clean. these goes for some women as well
Clitoral phimosis is very real. It's just that it just now being diagnosed more often.

http://forums.obgyn.net/womens-health/WHF.0102/0838.html

So I ask again, when will nairalanders start advocating the circumcision of the clitoral hood for women?

Phimosis is rare, for men and women. But that's not a reason to circumcise anybody.

Rates of scrotal cancer and HIV infection are significantly higher in uncricumcised men. This is a known medical fact.

I have seen a case of scrotal cancer in a guy with HIV infection in 2002 (what a combo). A very grotesque sight with an "R' rating. If I paste the picture here, 90% of Nairalanders will throw up persistently for two weeks straight.

That is if some don't pass out! tongue

Seun, I am sure if you see the picture, you will even circumcise your baby boy in the womb!
You are a filthy liar.

The foreskin has nothing to do with scrotal cancer. Show me the stats.

HIV infection is not signifcantly higher in Europe and they don't circumcise the majority of their boys. So there goes that theory as well.

Why are Nigerians so ignorant on this issue?

i will advice you not to even think of it at all.while i was still in secondary school my biology teacher told us that males that are not circumcised behave like dogs. they cannot control their urge for sex, they want to have it everytime.
AND YOU BELIEVED YOUR TEACHER!?

This "uncontrollable urge for sex" garbage is the exact same justification given as to why female circumcision is necessary.

It is sad that Africans actually adovocate the removal of God-given body parts to "control" sexual urges. SAD!

Why will i want to punish my beloved son by making him go through his life with a snake-like thing, when i could have helped him change into a well crafted tool!
You see how the circumcised men have to rationalize this in order to stroke their egos? Sad.

The p.enis, with the foreskin intact, is indeed a well-crafted tool by God. The circumcised privates on the other hand, is a mutilation of that tool.

uncircumcised peniss are very ugly period

plus u guys ever heard of smegma or phimosis. the last one can be pretty painful when it happens to a man. and not to mention the bacteria. you would think more men would keep that thing clean
Again, this is all coming from bush mentality.

Of course you would say that, you grew up in Naija, a cutting culture, where all your life you've only seen cut dicks.

Smegma exists in both men and women. But guess what? In this day and age, most people have access to water and bathe regularly. It's NOT an issue.

Phimosis is rare, and guess what? Women can have phimosis too. It's called clitoral phimosis: http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?articleID=000160EE-E53A-1C67-B882809EC588ED9F

Can we start circumcising the clitoral hood in women to prevent clitoral phimosis? Would you like that? If you say no, you're a hypocrite.
FamilyRe: I Won't Circumcise My Baby Boy (If Any) by FufuKing1(m): 8:58pm On Oct 03, 2007
SEUN IS 100 PERCENT RIGHT!

WOW!

There is a lot of misinformation out there about circumcision and many Nigerian men who are pro-circumcision are only so, because if they go against it, they have to admit that something WRONG was done to them. It's a severe blow to the male ego.

Anyway, the poster that said that circ prevent HPV is PATENTLY WRONG. The US has the highest rates of circumcision of the developed world and yet, nearly 80 perecent of the population is carrying a strain of HPV. Don't believe me, click here: http://www.cdc.gov/std/HPV/STDFact-HPV.htm

It is a shame that circumcision is perpetuated on helpless baby males. Shameful and hypocritical to blast female circumcision and support male circumcision as well. It is done without the boy's consent, and there are studies that prove it reduces sensitivity, not to mention some boys DIE as a result of circumcision.

debosky:
Comparing Nigeria to Europe is not appropriate to judge the effects or otherwise of circumcision, demographics, social systems and education levels are very different.

A comparison rates for West Africa in general (where circumcision is very widespread) to that for East/Southern Africa where the practice is less prevalent and you'll come to see the difference.

It may reduce HIV risks, but the key here is not to present it as a complete barrier to infection. Abstinence and mutual fidelity remain the best alternatives.
Ok, fair enough.

But how about this:

African countries that routinely practice male circumcision

Nigeria: 3.9 percent
Cameroon: 5.4 percent
Ivory Coast: 7.1 percent
Senegal: .9 percent
Guinea-Bissau: 3.8 percent
Ghana: 2.3 percent
Burkina Faso: 2.0 percent
Kenya: 6.1 percent
South Africa: 18.8 percent
Mozambique: 16.1 percent
Lesotho: 23.2 percent

African countries that don't routinely circumcise

Rwanda: 3.1 percent
Burundi: 3.3 percent
Malawi: 14.1 percent
Zambia: 17 percent
Zimbabwe: 20.1 percent
Namibia: 19.6 percent

Looking at these two groups it's clear that there are countries with high prevalances and low prevalences in both groups, but to be fair, there are FAR more countries that practice male circumcision widely than not, so the pool of countries is much smaller. How come Rwanda and Burundi are able to maintain their realitvely lower rates than the other ridiculously high populations? And how come Ivory Coast and Kenya have such high infection rates despite the prevalance of male circumcision?

Circumcision isn't the key. Africans have been circumcising men more than any other continent forever and yet, it is still the continent most hard hit by HIV. Behavioral change and condoms are the only ways to combat the virus.

I think this is garbage propaganda from American doctors and researchers.

Nigeria has been practicing male circumcision forever, and STILL has a very high HIV-prevlance rate of 3.9 percent.

Whereas Europe and Latin America where they don't practice circumcision, all have HIV-prevalence rates of less than 1 percent.

See, but it's not just oyibos who think that Nigerians are scam artists. Even among Africans, people tag Nigerians as thieves, liars and scam artists. So don't just blame it on the West trying to tarnish Naija's image, clearly, plenty of thieving Nigerians have done a good job of that themselves.

I agree.

Me personally, I think it's demeaning to women, to sell them in the same manner that cows and chickens are sold.

Marriage to me is about a partnership. But with the dowry, the relationship is instead like master and pet. The pet has been purchased and paid for, so now master can do with it as he sees fit.

But Naija women don't say anything, so I guess they don't mind being a commodity? huh

Which is it? Is speaking English, doing Western things, and not speaking pidgin evidence of the "colonized" mind like you said, or is it not?

How can you criticize people on here for advocating that English be well-spoken in Naija and talk about the white man did this, the white man did that, and yet there you are at the table eating the white man's food!

Why did you have to leave Naija to pursue your goals? That's much more of a "colonized" mind, believing that you must travel outside of Naija in order to succeed. Next time you want to rant and rave about the white devil, make sure you're not in oyiboland. You're biting the hand that feeds you.

So you're advocating the abolition of the English language as Nigeria's official language and banning Christianity? But what about Islam? That was brought over by the Arabs?

Also, I think the first step to fighting colonialism, would be for Africans to stop flocking to settle in their former colonial masters' countries. So get out of England and get your butt back in Naija, and put your money where your mouth is. cool
