fdecisive: Hello friends, I'm new here. Got Fall admission and graduate assistantship, with a full tuition waiver, living expenses, housing and flight. My Nigerian Uni seems to be delaying the sending of my transcript to the US, and of course without it, they will not release the I-20. US school intends to email the I-20 so I'm sure to get it with 48 hours of transcript getting there. I need that I-20 like yesterday... I can already see interview dates in Lagos showing January 2022 (too late), and Abuja showing July, still too late. I don't want emergency. Please anyone with useful info here should help a brother- connect, advice, etc. Still pressing exams and records to do the needful though. I feel like I should travel down there and gatecrash them till they send it. I want it to leave this week. Bros, You know what to do already. Better still, look for agents to do the needful. You can mention the Nigerian University here and you will be surprised people have very good agents that will accelerate the transcript process. Village people will not succeed on your matter o. Amen. |

Lewoo1212: Hello, I got an admission with full funding last year fall 2020 which I deferred to fall 2021 because of COVID, just got my full funding again and I am married with 2 kids, does anyone have any news concerning F2 visas and is it advisable for me for me to opt for the f1-F2 visa. NB: I think I meet the financial requirements for my dependent(8000$) according to the school. Please I need an advice. By all means apply for the F1 and F2 Visas. Ensure you have concrete plans for kids schooling and accommodation before you go for interview. I met a family whose visa was denied (mother:f1, children f2s), and while listening to her transcript: it appears she does not even sure which school the kids will attend, and they were planning to stay at an Airbnb upon arrival. So as much as you meet the financial requirements - know where you will live with them, what school they will attend. I hope the kids also have their I-20s and the source of funding is clearly stated. Cheers. |

harbeolar168: PLEASE GUYS, KINDLY HELP REVIEW THIS TRANSCRIPT...
Good morning Amazing people.
Thanks for your contributions so far, my interview is in few weeks and i will appreciate if you can help me go through my proposed Transcript. Course of study - Business Administration (master's degree) School - University of Michigan Dearborn Scholarship- None
VO - Good morning ME- Good morning sir (with a smile) VO - pass me your I20 and passport ME - Here you go sir VO- where are you going in the US? ME - I am going to the University of Michigan Dearborn for my Masters in business administration. VO - How many schools did you apply too? ME - i applied to 3 universities VO - How many gave you an admission ME - 2, which are University of Michigan Dearborn and The Lincoln University oakland California. VO - Why university of Michigan? ME - i choose the university of michigan because 1. According to the princeton review the university of michigan dearborn has emerged as the best business school for 2021, the 12th consecutive year. Not just that the school is well known for its research opportunities with renowned professors i will be priviledged to work with, going through the faculty webpage i discovered an ongoing research with professor Ted London on the evaluation of international monetary fund loan policy on developing economy a case study of African and Asian Economy. The university of michigan also offered me an admission into business administration and management with a minor in international business coupled with courses tailored towards my career aspiration. VO - what is this research about? ME- basically this research is about the adverse effect of the IMF loan policy on developing economy talking about 1. The conditionality 2. Perspective 3. Structure 4. Operating policy and 5. Lending policy This research will also help us to discover if the western countries (i.e developed countries) are using the funds to control the economy of developing nation. VO - why do you want to study in the US ME - well the united state of america remains the number one country in the world when it comes to innovation, technology and most especially business. Studying in the US will expose me to research opportunities which can not be achieved here in Nigeria. It will also help increase my chances of joining reputable financial organization in Nigeria when i return to pursue my career as an economist analyst. VO - why not Nigeria your country ME- having had my undergraduate studies here in Nigeria, i can categorically say that the nigeria school curiculum focuses more on the theorectical aspect of learning and does not offer hands on research opportunities that give detailed knowledge on my preffered course. Studying in a developed country like the US is not just going to give me the classroom knowlege that i need but also world business research experience in form of field work that is imperative to the course of my study. VO - have you ever travelled out of Nigeria? ME - No i haven't had a reason too. VO - what will the program do for you? ME - in line with what i currently do as a sales and account officer responsible for the management of client and also interest of the organization i work for. This program will help me acquire the needed knowledge and experience needed for me to be successful as an economist analyst, which will inturn prepare me for a career path as a consultant where i would be consulting for both the private and public sector on economic related issues. VO - who is your sponsor. ME - My mom is my sponsor VO - what does your mom do? ME - my mum runs about 3 business, she has a supermarket, a clithing stor le and food distribution store. She has about 9 staffs working for her.
Please i really need your honest opinion. I am so sorry its lengthy but i will appreciate your contribution.
Thanks My advice to peeps is - always go from specific to general. The interview time is short and you might not have time to say everything you want to say. For example, I will change this: i choose the university of michigan because 1. If Nigeria did not give you BS, how will you apply for MS? Hope this Lagos is not once chance so. Haven't booked because I am trying to avoid rescheduling and the hassle of emergency appointment. I will appreciate advise. will Lagos dates still drop for Fall 2021?
how many hours should one stay away to avoid being banned from checking the schedule page?
please. help with response. They will not ban you. You only have daily restrictions, I think 4 times maximum every day. So you can space the times you check - morning after prayers, afternoon after lunch, evening after dinner, and in the midnight when the witches have fallen asleep |

Diamondjuli: Me: good morning VO: good morning, how are you?
After the thumbprint
VO: have you been to the US before? Me: no I haven’t
VO: which other countries have you been to? Me: I told him
VO: what year? I told him
VO: Where did you stay I told him
VO: What’s your qualifications? I told him
VO: how will you pay for your tuition? Me: my sponsor is paying
VO: who is your sponsor? Me: my uncle
VO: what does he do? Me: he works with (and i stuttered) before telling him
VO: sorry we cannot grant you visa at this time... he handed me the green slip.
I was tensed and was talking fast that was why I stuttered. I hope to reapply again on Monday. Man your responses are too short! Way too short! You did not even bother to explain further when asked questions! Please read other successful applicant's interview and see this quoted guide below! Kharleed: Personally, I believe there are only three things a VO needs an F-1 applicant to prove. 1. Strong Home Ties: This is a no-brainer. A Visa Officer needs to be assured that you will return to Nigeria and not be a burden after you graduate. Do you have family here? Do you have a wife/husband in Nigeria? Do you have kids? Are you currently working? Do you own a business? Is it your family/Spouse that is funding you? Do you have scholarship from a local company? Is it a government scholarship? At least, can you clearly articulate your plans after you graduate? Does the VO has a gut-feeling that you are genuine? Do you have history of past travel and returning to Nigeria as at when due? Do you have a research you are working on tied to Nigeria? Just answer any of these questions honestly in your mind. If you are planning to lie to the VO, don't trip: Be rest assured you are coming out of that cubicle with a rejection slip.
2. Proof of Studentship: The VO is trained to pick the wheat from the chaff, to separate genuine students from people who want to japa. (Sorry if you don't know the meaning of Japa ). Answer honestly in your mind: What do you know about your research/course-of-study? Are you clear on your proposed thesis? What do you know about your school? The city where your school is? Where are you going to stay when you get to the US? Why did you apply to the school? Why did you select the school? Do you have contacts in your department? Is the course related to your undergraduate degree? If not, why are you switching careers? Can you articulate responses to these passionately?
3. Funds: Who is paying for your trip to the US? People with scholarships/fellowships/assistantships/funding from first family (mother, father, siblings, spouse) usually have no problem with this point. But if someone else is funding you, I mean awon Uncle, Aunties, In-laws, companies gang, be ready to explain the motive. Someone cannot just part away with millions of naira just because they love you. Be ready to explain, what is your relationship with this entity? How long have you known each other? What is their motive for investing in you? Are you paying back? Is it a loan? If you got a partial funding, and another entity is covering the rest, you'd still explain. If you got tuition waiver, with no extra funding, you need to explain solidly how you plan to survive in the US. If you have kids going with you, what is your educational plan for them? What is your medical plan? You must have sorted accommodation for at least a semester. You cannot be saying. You are not sure/act like you have not really prepared. So what's your plan?
In essence, be honest and be prepared. The VO must have rejected you earlier for not meeting one of those requirements. The embassy/consulate HAVE YOUR RECORDS and also access to DO A BACKGROUND CHECK on you. So with these few points of mine, I hope I have been able to , reflect on your last interview and answer honestly to yourself, has something changed? Do you have strong home ties now? Can you convince a dummy you are really a student? Do you genuinely have funding (have plans for funding) now?
Be it as it may, if God wants you to be in US, and you have worked diligently and honestly, and you have nothing to hide, your visa WILL be approved. The God factor is the most important factor. As the maxim goes: work like you have not prayed, PRAY like you have not worked, because in essence, it is not by your hard-work.
Whew! That was an epistle. My bad. I was a beneficiary of this thread (Part 15) and I look for opportunities to pay it forward. It's been a month in the US now and I must say, life is really good here. Back to my studies, Aluta Continua!

Eniolakiite: Interesting thread Well, I have been in the US since 2019. I will be graduating in May. This winter season is not my favorite but I have been coping. My school is in Tennessee. Here is my view Makes two of us in Tennessee. I realize there are a lot of Nigerians in TN, but as we no get association/community (maybe I haven't found out), we no know ourselves. Stevenssen: Fairheart Eniolakiite solihp walspring friedpotato muleriders cocao predstan emeritusseun futuresenator geewin69 please come and share one or two things here, let's get this thread going How is the temperature at your location now? Temperature can be wide and diverse even within a state. Our weather is fair here in my city. No extremes at all, and it doesn't really snow around here. Yesterday we had highs of 26c around 4pm. Isn't that wonderful?. * Your visa application experience /adjustment status experience Visa application was smooth. shared that in the general student visa thread (fairheart's thread). No adjustment experience * Travelling experience (airlines and airport to use) I used Ethiopian airline, cheap and reliable. If I am to travel again, I will use them again. There is a trick in booking flights to the US from Nigeria. If your city is a smaller city, flight costs might be expensive. Try book your flight to a nearby bigger city, and use ground transportation to connect. You'd save yourself a couple of $$. * Can you open a bank account while still in Nigeria and what bank has the best customer service and plan) Banking depends on your state and location. But I see a lot of grad students using BoA and Suntrust. * Public Transportation Vs Driving in the US Getting a car is not a luxury. It is a necessity. If not, your mobility will be limited. You might find yourself walking a lot, or your timing not compatible with the bus schedule. It is arguably quite cheaper to drive than depending on public transport. * Driving in US? How long can you use your Naija driving license before you get a license? Just study and take the test. It isn't that hard. It is a better experience than carrying your international license everywhere. And you will need your license for identity. * Using a credit card (things to avoid) Well I do not use a credit card. We survived for many years in 9ja without debt card credit card. I have promised myself never to use it. If I can afford it, I buy it. If I cannot, I waka. * How do you send money home (without much loss) I use worldremit most times. Just ensure you have a trusted person in Nigeria that will help you get the best rate possible back to your Naira account. * What culture shock have you experienced? While struggling to learn how to ride a bike one night, a young policewoman patrolling the neighbourhood in her SUV stopped by, and for about 40minutes, started teaching me how to ride. Good Lord! She held the bike and guided me till I got moving. Even showed me where I can get great bicycles for cheap prices. Never in Nigeria.. * Nigerian restaurants and market in your location Quite a few around here. You can just google search "Nigerian stores/restaurants in XXXX". Bleep being your city or zip. At least I have not missed any Nigerian food. Still taking swallow and egusi steady. It's being a great experience overall. You don't have to be rich to experience the good things of life - constant electricity, constant internet, constant water, food at cheap prices, security, mobility, good school for your kids, wonderful neighbourhood. A lot of churches and mosques in case you are wondering. Good parks and exposure to people from all around the world. One can definitely be money rich in Nigeria. But "rich" is not solely defined by money. It is defined by your quality of life, and your intellectual level. God bless Western Nigeria, Eastern Nigeria and Northern Nigeria! |

Also if you have medications you are using like paracetamol, piritin**, flagyl etc just take a few along.. in essence..try not to forget anything.

FutureSenator: All these touts trying to extort me in Abuja. Guys I hope I don't have to staple anything. Visa approved minutes ago at Abuja Embassy First application MS Civil Engineering at UT Chattanooga COA - 40k, Graduate Assistantship - 42k, no deficit. January 5, 7.30AM Got to the embassy like 6.45am, met a lot of touts outside. They kept asking me "have you arranged your documents? have you done this, have ou done that..I just ignored all of them. Went in around 7am. The cgi lady asked for I-20, DS-160, appointment confirmation and passport. She checked everything and told me my passport photograph is too small and does not meet specification. I went outside to take another passport for 2,500naira. 4 Passports for 2,500 naira!! Anyway I had no option but to take it. I went back in to join the queue Met one black guy who checked passport and i-20 and collected the photograph. Next is one fine lady at window 4 where we did biometrics.. waited for another 30minutes before I was called to window 9. Meanwhile the 3 applicants before me - denied, approved, denied. I have done mental calculation that the next in the series is approved, and that is me, (PS: the candidate after me was denied too.) VO: Good morning, please pass your passport and I-20. Me: Okay (pass documents). VO; So what do you do currently in Nigeria Me: I work as a Project Engineer with xyz company. My job function involves facility construction and upgrade, warehouse constructions, infrastructure developments and software deployment. VO: Okay, fine. Why Tennessee. Me: Ah Tennessee perfectly aligns with my research interests. I checked out a lot of schools online and spoke with a lot of professors, but this particular professor working on application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in transportation systems fits my needs. I will be working on developing models to predict congestion and traffic control. VO: Okay, are you married, do you have kids Me: Oh yes I am married, but no kids. My wife is currently running her undergraduate degree here in Nigeria. VO; Is she going with yo? Me: oh no. She can't abandon her degree. She will complete her degree while I am running my program and I will be coming to check her every couple of months. VO: Good, what was your undergraduate degree Me: I have a bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from the University of xxxx in Nigeria. VO; Good, when is your program starting Me: 13 January next year, oh sorry, this year. VO; (pauses for some seconds and type furiously, I was praying and calling unto God in my mind): Your visa is recommended for approval. Take this slip, it contains instruction on how to pick up your passport. It usually takes 2-4 business days for administrative processing, but could be more or less. Thank you and enjoy your trip Me: Thank you and enjoy your trip too (well I didn't know why I said that.. maybe it was joy lol) ....... I was awake since 3am praying unto God and seeking His blessings. I believe it is just pure grace. Not by my power or might. All thanks to God. Please wish me safe trip to Chattanooga! |
