AHEAD of the 2011 polls in Nigeria, a new militant group has sprang up in the volatile Niger Delta area, with a seeming vicious political agenda. Spokesperson of the new group, Wilson Amaebim, an Ijaw, told AkanimoReports on Friday that the name of the organisation is Revolutionary Army of Niger Delta (RAND). But, this insurgent group appears to be obviously against the presidential ambition of former military ruler, Ibrahim Babangida. They have therefore warned that they will go after all those pushing for Babangida in the oil and gas region. It was not immediately known whether this emerging terrorist group has any links with the Joint Revolutionary Council (JRC), an insurgent network that on Thursday, declared Chief Raymond Dokpesi, the Director-General of Babangida Campaign Organisation, a personna non grata in the troubled region. Spokesperson fr the JRC, Cynthia Whyte, in an on-line statement said Dokpesi, who owns an independent broadcasting empire, was no longer welcomed in the regin where he hails. In the mean time, RAND is claiming that the former military ruler is the worst of all the presidential aspirants who have emerged so far and that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will lose the oil- producing states of the Niger Delta if the party throws up Babangida as their presidential flag-bearer. ''It is no lame threat, quote me, we will ensure that the PDP fails in the Niger Delta if Babangida emerges as their presidential candidate. There is no basis fr a self-confessed 'evil genius' to seek to lead Nigeria again'', the militant group said. Adding, they said, ''our 100 per cent support is for President Goodluck Jonathan and we are prepared to crush anybody or group who want to stand on his way. To be forewarned is to be forearmed''. RAND says they have cells across the oil region, and that members are mainly from the ranks of aggrieved ex-militants. http://www.africanexaminer.com/new_militants02 |
A snake has killed a teenager while she was asleep in Ijegwu village, Yache in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. P.M.NEWS gathered that 18-year old Elizabeth Odey was bitten on her legs by a snake at night and she died a few hours after she was rushed to a health centre near her parents’ home. According to Maria, the elder sister of the deceased, “she was sleeping when the snake crawled up to her bed and bit her on the leg. It was her screams that awoke our mother who was sleeping in the next room.” She said snake bite was common in the area because it was snake infested but it was rare for a snake to be found inside the room let alone biting someone while asleep on the bed. “Snake bites are common here especially in the farm but this one came into the room and climbed the bed to bite my sister and at that same moment the lantern went off yet there was still kerosine in the lamp. That is why we said the snake bite is spiritual,” Maria added. Maria said when light was brought in by neighbours who heard her scream, “we searched everywhere but did not find any snake. Yet, blood ws gushing out of the marks on her legs.” She said the girl, who was a senior secondary student of Ochumode International School, Ogoja, was rushed to the health centre located close to their house but she died a few hours later. “She was a very humble and obedient girl. Often when I am not around, she took care of my shop,” Maria said sobbing. http://www.africanexaminer.com/snake_bits_girl |

THE seeming desperate presidential ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan, in the coming 2011 elections, has sharply divided the Niger Delta, a volatile oil and gas region that was a hot bed of low intensity war since 2006. Insurgent groups and Ijaw leaders who are pushing for their kinsman, Jonathan, to continue in office, are increasingly becoming intolerant to opposing views and campaigns in the oil and gas region. Already, the Joint Revolutionary Council (JRC), an insurgent network, appears to have taken their pro-Jonathan stance to the extreme by declaring Chief Raymond Dokpesi, the Director-General of the Ibrahim Babangida Campaign Organisation, and promoter of Daar Communications, owners of a vast television and radio network, a persona non grata in the Niger Delta. But, in a swift reaction, the Niger Delta Patriotic Front (NDPF), a radical political group, has warned that they will resort to any means necessary to resist what they are seeing as ''creeping farcism'' in the oil region. Spokesperson for the group, Mr. Ben Didi, told AkanimoReports on telephone on Thursday, ''the Niger Delta is not an exclusive region of President Jonathan. The action of the JRC is condemnable and speaks volume about the seeming desperation in the Jonathan camp''. Continuing, he said, ''if all geo-political zones in Nigeria are to adopt that retrogressive position, Jonathan will go down in history as a president who presided over the liquidation of the country. We will resist such a political development by any means necessary''. The JRC which comprises of alliance units of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), active combat units of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF) and the Martyrs Brigade, in an on-line statement to AkanimoReports by their Spokesperson, Cynthia Whyte, on Thursday said, ''we hereby declare Chief Raymond Aliero Dokpesi persona non grata in the Niger Delta''. According to them, ''Dokpesi is a blackleg in the struggle for the liberation of the Niger Delta region and the South South zone of the Nigerian State. Any Niger Deltan who will or can trade the destiny of tens of millions of Niger Delta for filthy lucre is not worthy of existence. Should not even live amongst us''. They are demanding that all Southern and Niger Delta interests should immediately cease every relationship with Raymond Dokpesi and all of his business interests. Adding, the insurgents said, ''government institutions and parastatals, youth groups and all others are hereby warned from participating in programmes runs by Raymond Dokpesi and his interests such as Raypower radio, AIT Television etc. Any Niger Delta interest that henceforth participates in AIT programmes such as Kaakaki etc or advertises on AIT will be summarily punished''. ''In the next few weeks'', they went on, ''we will begin our course. Any advertisement by any Niger Delta based groups or interests on AIT will be cursed, condemned and punished. However, let us commend all those who have chosen to remain resolute and fight the Jonathan cause even in the face of grim persecution and great financial and social temptations''. The group however, commended the likes of Chief Dumo Lulu Briggs, Professor Kimse Okoko, Chief Edwin Clark and all the governors of the various ''Bantustan states across the Nigerian State even though we are aware that certain governors in the Niger Delta secretly do not wish Jonathan well. Their time will come''. ENDS http://www.africanexaminer.com/dokpesi |
President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria has intervened in the crisis rocking the Ogun State House of Assembly, expressing disappointment on the incident. The president who summoned the Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, the G-15 led by the Speaker, Tunji Egbetokun and G- 9 led by Emmanuel Soyemi Coker to Abuja yesterday, was said to have chided the governor and the minority lawmakers at a meeting he had with the aggrieved parties. A source privy to the meeting revealed that Dr. Jonathan was very bitter about the kangaroo impeachment that he allegedly tonguelashed Governor Daniel and the ‘coup’ plotters who are members of the G-9 in the House. Stalwarts of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, who were present at the meeting, also openly condemned the purported impeachment which they said had put the party and the state to shame. The President was said to have blamed Governor Daniel for the shameful act, saying he should have averted the ‘show of shame’ as the governor and chief security officer of the state. Daniel was, however, reported to have stated that he had no foreknowledge of the kangaroo impeachment, blaming it all on the Coker-led G-9. This was said to have shocked members of the group. In his determination to resolve the crisis, President Jonathan was said to have rescheduled the talks with all the parties involved for later today. As at the time of this report, indications were clear that the Presidency would order Egbetokun back to his seat after a peaceful agreement must have been reached. Information reaching P.M.NEWS has it that members of the G-9 are already jittery about the consequence of their action, lobbying that they should not be suspended from the House at the end of the whole saga. Daniel on his part was said to be insisting on an undertaking by G-15 as part of the peace terms, that they would not suspend the G-9 members after the issue is resolved. The G-9 had on Monday shocked the nation when, as the minority in the State Assembly purportedly impeached the majority, creating a legislative record. If granted that the constitution was suspended, why are they admitted in the Wednesday council of state meetings as former leaders, they are also pensionable. Where they Sworn into office? this should be considered as facts. |
hello Nigerians, It is noticed that IBB is determined this time to contest the 2011 election, more so may leave PDP if he looses the ticket at the primaries, but stands to have a divided support due to the interest of Gusau, Buhari and Atiku. Be that as it may, more in the discussion circle is the point that the 8 years he served as millitary president has not been blotted from the Nigerian constitution hence it accorded him recognition to the State executive council meeting. Momentarily, Many are posed to seek legal interpretation to this through the judiciary and the definition may become a land mark judgment that will shape the 2011 presidential election. Fellow Nairalanders and Lovers of Nigeria, Should IBB 8 years in office as millitary president be termed as constitutional 2 terms in office thereby disqualifying him for the Presidential slot come 2011? Your sincere opinion is anticipated. |
