OAU PARLIAMENT SPEAKER UNDER PRESSURE AS ACTIVIST CALL FOR HIS IMPEACHMENT A renowned critic, Moshood Odunayo Olajide has call for the impeachment of Adebayo Adebari, The speaker of the parliament, Great Ife students union. Since the assumption of office of Honourable Adebayo Adejare, The parliament has not been holding session consistently while the committees working for each office in the executive arm of the students union has not been ratified and the union budget is yet to be passed. The critic also accuse the speaker of not fufilling his electioneering promises and lacking administrative and parliamentary erudition dexterity to manage the affairs of the hallowed chamber. Honourable Isreal Anaximander, a senior parliamentarian and constituency leader for the faculty of Arts once describe the speaker as a clog in the wheel towards the progress of the union. Reacting to the impeachment threat, a senior parliamentarian from the faculty of Education who speak under the condition of anonymity agree that the speaker should be impeached but he is sceptical.hear him as he speaks, l don't think the speaker can be easily impeached because he is the stooge of the union President. The issue of not passing the budget may be a deliberate act between the speaker and the union president to encourage autonomous spending so that they can easily loot students fund. As a campus journalist, you should know that autonomous spending have no record and this is why the financial secretary is shying away from releasing financial statement of the union which students has been agitation for. So, what are we talking about? Meanwhile, parliamentarians are divided over the impeachment threat. |

LAW STUDENTS CONVERGE TO CREATE A NATIONAL BODY. The movement to have a NATIONAL LAW STUDENTS' ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (LAWSAN) took a giant leap with delegates from some Universities in Nigeria coming together on the 14th and 15th of November, 2015 to discuss and map out modalities for the formation of the association. The historic meeting was held at the Faculty of Law, Obafemi Awolowo University under the hosting leadership of Mr Olaniran Quadri, the President of the Law Students' Society, Obafemi Awolowo University. Is OAU STILL AFRICAN MOST BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS? "That it has always been the case does not presuppose that there can neither be changes to it nor adjustments". What we students are known for is our swift recognition of the management's fault but we most times find it hard to point at our own wrong which I believe it's contribution to the state of this great citadel is of remark, and the few critics that could put their pen to paper to call to order Student's nonchalant and degrading attitude, such critics seldom get painted with several names like "attention-seeker" "popularity seeker" "fake-account", but in a case whereby the management is being criticized, such name calling is limited, are we then saying that it's only the management that wears the chain that produces nonchalant attitude ray?. Towards the end of 2014/2015 harmattan semester, I put my pen to paper to discourage the rate at which students defame the dignity of "SAN SIRO " in Awolowo Hall at the back of block 3 adjacent to self help, but what was the feedback I got? So disappointing and unbelievable that some learned students would not be able to reason out that perching on the San- SIRO grass to excrete speaks volume of how intellectually slacking and how dirty we are, but derive pleasure in throwing back jibes at the person trying to discourage such act and as such fail to desist from continually defaming the dignity of the field, and such set are quick to point out errors in management ordeals. *I laugh* However, my own is to pen down matters I feel needs to be critically examined as an ethicist and yours is to reason it out and rationally take the befitting path, that's concomitant with the motto of Obafemi Awolowo University "for learning and culture" and our rating intellectually. I laugh anytime I read or listen to our great ife anthem, the aspect that do put me in such state is "African most beautiful campus" the question that makes me laugh is, is this campus still beautiful? Or in the actual fact we are dwelling and boasting in past glory? Like my friends on nairaland do comment, "Is the structure that depicts 'spider' really still 'spider'? Our beautifully constructed buildings are they still beautiful and befitting? While surfing the net I stumbled on pictures that showed the old pictures of buildings like (Ajose, Spider, Educational building, Faculty of Law etc), even before choosing OAU as a preferable institution of study, the sight of these pictures will raise your desire to pay Obafemi Awolowo University a visit in order to behold the beauty that this picture exemplified, but what do you get to see when you eventually land on Obafemi Awolowo University campus to perceive this beauty? Rotten, cracked and sickening buildings, walls redesigned with posters, walkway reconstruct to board for pasting campaign names, staircase refurbished to advertising boards, these and many more are what "used to be" African most beautiful campus have been turned to. The question then is Who is entitled to wear the garment of blame? Student or the management? Emphatically I will say both! The management though do not take into cognizance Student's welfare and as such leaving all the "used to be" beautiful building rotten and unappealing to our sight, leaving them unpainted, but instead of we student to stand up against this and compel the management to renovate broken chairs in our lecture halls, repaint faded lecture halls and building that gives Obafemi Awolowo University that glory of being the most beautiful campus in Africa, we fail to do so, but derive pleasure in assisting the management to deface the beauty of Obafemi Awolowo University campus. #So pathetic# How? I want to believe we have spots and reserved boards where we can put up posters, to advertise whatever we want to put up, putting them up in our hostels is a bit secretive but that as well needs to be adjusted and properly done, but we do see those reserved space and spots as insufficient to pass across the message on our poster but walls where it is boldly written "POST NO BILL" are where we feel will put across our message to the audience. Hell no, with these we are no different from the the management that left our buildings unattended to, we are no different from our management that see no reason to repaint and reconstruct our "godforsaken" buildings, yes we are not different from the management if we continue to deface the beauty of this campus most especially "academics area" because this area is where a visitor steps feet on before moving to our hostels, but when a visitor walks in and sees posters being glued to walking path, staircases , poles, walls, and other unreasonable spot or path, then you leave the visitor no doubt of committing hasty generalization, and if we fail to change we are nothing than management apprentice in the course of poor structure, rotten and cracked buildings How? . The management fails to repaint these buildings and instead of we standing against the management we decided to help the management "repaint " the walls with posters. So #degrading# I am not trying to exempt myself from this degrading and shameless act, neither am I trying to paint myself holy or being a righteous student on this campus because I am also a student but I believe we can change and adjust the way we put up posters and banners on walls, and that of pathways and staircases, For me, it is unreasonable for a man embedded with rationality to put up such act, and to the way we post banners and ads in our hostels can as well be adjusted because putting posters on where hostels block indicators are boldly written do not speak well of us, putting adverts on walls, walk path should be discouraged . If this is done then together with one voice we can stand up against the management to return that part of our anthem "African most beautiful campus". I thereby pray the Union leaders to see to this degrading act and farm out ways to curb this degrading act, because I believe that it has always been the case does not imply that it can not be either change or adjusted. #KEEP OAU CLEAN# #Paste no poster on pathways, walls and staircases# ©FYNESTBOI |

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos state has sent the Lagos State University (LASU) 2015 Amendment Bill to the State House of Assembly for ratification. According to a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Steve Ayorinde, on Saturday, the bill proposes a single term of five years for the Vice-Chancellor of the institution. Ayorinde said the governor also sent the Employment Trust Fund Bill 2015 to the Assembly for consideration and ratification. He said the bill aims to radically transform employment creation in the state with N25 billion proposed to be spent over four years as a support scheme for young entrepreneurs and small businesses. He said that the two bills were sent to the House as Executive Bills. Ayorinde said the draft of the bills had earlier been approved by the State Executive Council during its meeting on Wednesday. Ayorinde said the LASU Amendment Bill 2015 is meant to serve as an improvement over the two previous amendments in 1990 and 1992. He said it was done with the aim of finding a lasting solution to the challenges that had plagued the state-owned institution in recent years. According to him, the bill is proposing to amend certain sections of the law to meet current realities in line with best practices. "It seeks to review the exercise of general supervision over discipline in the university imposed on the Vice-Chancellor and to propose a single term of five years for the institution’s Vice-Chancellor," he said. The bill also seeks an amendment that would make the appointment of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council the prerogative of the Visitor in line with standard practice. “It seeks an amendment to Section 36(1) and (2) of the Law, which deals with admission policy to place the responsibility of determining the minimum admission requirement on the Senate of the university," he said. He said the Employment Trust Fund Bill, is in fulfillment of one of the campaign promises of Ambode, aimed to inject N25 billion into job creation and employment opportunities over a period of four years. "The fund will be administered as soft loans to bonafide residents of the state that desire facilities ranging from N100, 000 to N1 million or more, as the case may be," he said. Ayorinde said the bill seeks the establishment of the fund to be modelled after the state’s Security Trust Fund. "Which means it will be funded through joint contributions from the state government and the private sector. “The fund will be administered through an independent trust backed by an efficient structure that will disburse the funds," he said. Ayorinde said that the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment would oversee the affairs of the scheme, while the funds would be channelled through the state’s micro finance institution. Beneficiaries, he said, would be selected across the five divisions in the state including Lagos Island, Ikeja, Badagry, Epe and Ikorodu in order to allow residents in every part of the state enjoy the scheme. “Just about one per cent interest rate will be charged on the loan to take care of administrative expenses. "The state government’s desire is to allow enterprising residents, who do not have access to loans or other forms of finance enjoy repayable soft loans, to establish a business venture or rescue a struggling small concern,” he said. Ayorinde said the state government was keen about start-up businesses because every beneficiary would be able to employ a few other persons, thereby taking several thousands of people off the streets. He said that the state government would also set up Business Support Centres to assist and monitor progress in the beneficiaries’ various businesses. Ayorinde said that about N6.3 billion would be required for the scheme every year. According to him, half of what is needed for its implementation for the first year has already been set aside. http://tribuneonlineng.com/gov-ambode-proposes-5-years-single-tenure-for-lasu-vc Cc: Lalasticlala |
MALNUTRITION remains a major public health and development issue in Nigeria. It is responsible for the death of about 800,000 under-five children every year in the country. This was contain in the communique issued at the end of a two- day interactive session between MNCH coalition, the Gombe State House of Assembly and other top government officials in Bauchi, Bauchi, State during the week. Participants at the interactive session therefore, emphasized the need to address the issue of malnutrition in the state, just as they urged relevant agencies to partner and collaborate with the Ministry of Economic Planning, which has the mandate to coordinate food and nutritional activities in the state. They further stressed the need for the release of the 2015 appropriation for Nutritional activities, adding that the combination of the dwindling oil prices in the international market, devaluation of the Nigerian currency, foreign and domestic debt, insecurity in the North Eastern States, inflation rate and their impact on the Nigerian Economy, might make it impossible for the government to commit resources needed to provide solution to malnutrition in the state. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/11/800000-children-die-yearly-of-malnutrition-in-nigeria/ Cc: Lalasticlala
