One question for the poster.

When was the pictures taken?

It must have taken yesterday or today because the water situation on the campus was not as bad as you paint it in the picture. The school management ordered everyone to leave the campus and it was because of stubborn students like you that they decided to switch off the electric and water supplies.

Don't paint OAU in a bad light, just because electricity supply was erratic for a few days, you guys were disrupting the whole school calendar.

Abeg go home and see if you've had light in your father's house for 10 straight hours like you do on campus.
Fine the reason for that picture is because there is no water due to the framed mid semester break, but have you for once thought of reason why some of this students are staying back to pass through such to get water? undecided

Most people making derogatory comments on this post about the university are obviously oblivious of the status quo in the institution. The University management already ordered students to vacate halls of residence, and is just using this tactic to ensure students adhere to its directive. The students in the picture are the resilient, or better still, stubborn ones who have refused to obey the management's directive.
You said stubborn? You must be joking, do you know most of those that had refused to go home is because of transport fee? I interviewed a student and what he told me was that if omole can give him transport money he will surely go home, not one, not two. So you calling them resilient shows how illogical your reasoning can be.... undecided

Even in Kenyan slums, once or twice, residents do a clean-up excersize since no government does it for them. This is a university, they are supposed to be the most educated people in there time, and they cant organize for a simple thing like that? And then we want Africa to be a greate continent? how are we going to achieve that if we cant apply anything we learn in real life.

OAU has always been like this, Awo Hall, Awo Annex, Fajuyi Hall for males and the most terrible one then was Angola Hall ETF Hall was still better. I do not know so much about the female Hostels but we used to perceive very terrible odour from their drainage and i heard severally from those who stayed in Angola Hall that ladies used to have their baths outside very early before dawn because they could not used the bathrooms. Maintenance culture is very bad in Ife. The school authority cannot afford to deny this. The pictures are there. I left almost 10 years ago and i would not be surprised if they are now worse but i expected renovations to have been done.

I get your point

But I'd blame your SUG.. They are useless.. All brawns and no brains.. I followed your school fees increment imbroglio very closely.. And I wasn't Impressed one bit.. You don't just fight for the sake of fighting.. You don't just oppose for the sake of Opposition..

I expected the SUG to extract serious commitment from the Management during the fees increment issues.. Commitments like "fix all the toilets". Little Commitments like this can go a long way in improving the standards of living on the Campus considering that all the pictures from this propaganda thread of your (no offense) are mostly toilets.

And trust me when I say that fixing the toilets is a commitment the school will wanna keep if it was one of the deals struck during the school fees negotiations. But it wasn't. What did your SUG do?

They went into the trenches chanting "no increment or nothing". All the management needed do was wait for students to pile up the pressure on the SUG and thus the battle was won. SUG/Student Lost again. This the Same situation played out again with the lecture boycott and the subsequent closure of the school.

Like I said earlier, I'm not holding brief for the Management.. But the SUG needs to change their modus Operandi. I doubt if they have ever written a comprehensive proposal on the state of the hostels to the management. I seriously doubt that. Na to Strike and Unstrike they sabi..

Maybe when People starts spending 5-6 years for 4 years courses while the lecturers continue receive their salaries that's when it'll dawn on you guys that you're and will always be at the receiving end
Wow @bolded we lack logical union leader I must confess, but notwithstanding if I am share this in percentage the school management will be alloted the highest bro.... Well said... Atleast I have learnt one or two things to be put to use...

I didn't listen to the press conference you are speaking of.. I don't know what the School management said or didn't say.. And that has no bearing whatsoever on my previous comment.

The crux of that post is that You guys expect so much when you pay very little.. And Until Your SUG understand that they are a bridge between the Students and the Management, OAU will keep having this sort of problems.

The basic facts remain that University Education is highly subsidized and we all know it.. Even with all these complaints of neglect and all, the value of those hostel accommodation is way way more than your accommodation fees + Development levy or whatever. At least, you know how much illegal sale of bedspace in your school costs and I'm sure it goes for around 30k or more. Therein lies the selfishness of students.

You all believe hostel space is valued more than what you are paying for but you'd rather pocket that cash in shady deals than pay that same amount to the school management.

I'm not holding brief for the Management.. They are as corrupt as they get. But my grouse is the students expecting the management build heaven on earth for you when you pay close to nothing and the government subventions are less than a 10th of what the University actually needs.

There are very simple approaches, students/SUG can take to make things easier for students and management alike. Like basic sanitation. What will it cost students in that hostel in the pix you posted to clean up that mess and enact a rule preventing such? Nothing... But you'd rather leave it there and blame the management.

I remember during my time in Uniport, every member of my hostel wing contributed 500 and we fixed our toilet and the plumbings, and shared the toilets and bathrooms according to rooms. Each room maintains and cleans theirs. And we were all better for it.

The Earlier your SUG realise that the management isn't an enemy but an important stakeholder they must work with to move that campus foward, the better for all of you.
I agree with you sir @bolded, but the problem is that, the management are not ready to do anything even if we start paying 200,000, it is two years still counting they increase our fee, and yet they have not been able to put up something to prove to student that, if we pay more we will get more. What we are getting now is far worse than when we used to get then when we do pay 6k and the likes, the increment sir there is nothing to show for it....

Don't mind them

How much is their school fees?

How much do they pay as hostel fees? less than 5k right?

They should take that cash and go get a room with water and steady light in a neat environment off campus.

It's not like they clean the environment themselves, they will still waiting for cleaners on top hostel fees of less than 5k

If school management propose an increase in fees, they will strike.. Yet they want heaven on Earth..

EducationNational Association Of University Student Rejects OAU Students'union Suspension by Fynestboi(mod): 1:20am On Dec 04, 2015
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS. SOUTH WEST
PRESS STATEMENT
03-12-2015.

WE REJECT OAU STUDENT's UNION PROSCRIPTION.

The Leadership of the National Association of University Student's in the South West here reject the criminal, illegal, arbitary suspension of the Obafemi Awolowo's University Student's Union.

This wicked act of the OAU management is coming in the wake of a Congressional decision to Boycott Lecture for a day and for Peaceful Protest around the school to demand for a better welfare condition and also to demand for reinstatement of their suspended comrades.

After the OAUSU leadership have engaged in a long diplomatic relationship with the Management on the deplorable state of the University Hostels, Class rooms, Laboratories and the likes. The Hostels in Obafemi Awolowo University are no more better than a Prison. About six people are lumped up together officially in a room not originally supposed to contain more than three people. Unofficially when considering Squatters in the Hostel the figure is astronomical.

More importantly, the OAU Senate had just a session ago ratified an increase in fee which the sparked up protest among students in 2014. Yet even with this astronomical and dream killing fees- the conditions of welfare of Student's have continued to deteriorate notwithstanding.

Even with the Protest on November 30th which was very peaceful and was already suspended to create room for dialogue with the Management as to show the ideological and intellectual clarity of the Student Union. The management still went ahead to Close down the school indefinitely, not satisfied with their Abachanarian approach to Student Welfare issues, they went further to Suspend the Activities of the Student Union.

We hereby declare that such will not Stand, OAU Student's Union is an independent one that needs no rubber stamp from the OAU Vice Chancellor Bamitale Omole who has a penchant to be known as anti Student and neo-liberal.

We hereby give an Ultimatum of Seven (7) days to the OAU Management to reinstate the Student's Union else face the full mobilization of Student's across different Universities for an OCCUPY OAU Protest.

NEVER BE DEMORALIZED O YE ARMY OF COURAGE
INTRODUCTION
When fear colonizes our minds based on challenges, the output is usually failure and that is why Great Ife students' Union is using this medium to notify her members that we are not moved with what the University management is trying to stage. We believe that they are only staging a drama all because they are scared of Great Ife students' Union. They do not want the anti corruption crusade of president Muhommodu Buhari to land on OAU campus but when they heard that he will be coming to Ile Ife for the coronation of the new king, they were frightened and started misbehaving all around. The elements of University Management's fear include :
THE LIES THAT ABIODUN OLANREWAJU (SCHOOL'S PRO) WAS SPREADING ALL AROUND
If the management of Obafemi Awolowo University are not scared of Great Ife students' Union, why would their PRO be saying the pictures of the toilets that were put on the pages of news papers were fabricated by the Students' Union. He said they did not exist. He had forgotten that a cross section of Awolowo hall collapsed in block 4 and block 5 in Fajuyi hall's soakaway had opened for the past few months and the University Management could not do anything about it.If the media really want to know who the liar is, they should come to our hostels and verify.
THE UN NECESSARY MID SEMESTER BREAK
If the management is not scared, why would they give unnecessary mid semester break because they felt the Union wants to disrupt the coronation of the new king of the source based on speculation. What we even count as a blessing to our generation as a Union that a new king is being coronated in our own administration but the management in their tyrannical way is using it as blackmail against our Union. They had forgotten that lies can only go for years but just in one second, the truth will eat it up.
LETTERS THAT THEY WROTE TO THE AREA COMMANDER AND THE NEW KING
The University Management wrote to Moore police station stating that Great Ife students' Union wants to disrupt the coronation of OONI of Ife. Infact, somebody in his right senses would not even write to the new king that somebody wants to disrupt his coronation but our own Management does not want to know that because they just want cover up their atrocities at all cost.We use this medium to inform the whole world that Great Ife Students' Union does not have any intention to disrupt the coronation and will never have the intention.
ABIODUN OLANREWAJU SAID MANAGEMENT RENOVATED EVERY YEAR
If the Management is not scared, why would they be dishing out lies from the pit of hell. It is visible to the blind and even audible to the deaf that nothing has been done when it comes to renovation of our halls of residence. If anybody wants to find out, please you can come to our halls of residence to find out.
HE SAID STUDENTS ARE FIGHTING ONE ANOTHER ON CAMPUS
This was an attempt to scare the parents or Guardians in order to call their children to evacuate the campus just for the purpose of not informing Buhari their atrocities because they know that the strenght of the students always lies in their numbers. They started creating pandemonium in order to scare our parents. In fact, because they want to cover up, they want to give our parents heart attack. Bloody liars! It can never work, the truth must be told. We use this medium to inform the public that Great Ife students has never for ones fought one another and we will never fight ourselves. The campus is as peaceful as anything. They just want to drive the students home because they resolved in a congress that they want to learn, they don't want anything to disrupt their academic calendar. The management is now taking their resolution to be something else.
ATTEMPT TO ARREST THE UNION OFFICERS TODAY
We wish to inform the public that management has been using SSS and DSS to trace us all around. What have we done? What are our offenses? These are the questions that we are putting ac

THE SUSPENSION OF STUDENTS' UNION: OUR POSITION

It came to our notice as a rude shock that the Obafemi Awolowo university Management has directed the suspension of the biggest students union in sub Saharan Africa. While we will not love to bore you with rhetorics, we have gone through the press release by the Management and it is on record that no reason was given for tthe decision.
We are therefore forced to attribute the suspension to recent happenings on OAU campus. Among these possible reasons which we feel might have motivated this submission by the University's own management are as follows. However, we feel these reasons are cogent but not ample to spuspend he activities of the Union.

1.THE ALLEGED MOLESTATION OF PROFESSOR Y.K YUSUF
As regards the alleged molestation of Professor Y.K Yusuf, we believe that the intervention of ASUU and other top management staff is enough to die the matter down. Shutting down activities of the Students' Union is equal to shutting down activities of 35,000 great Ife students.
If Prof Yusuf alleged molestation is among the reasons for pseudo proscription of he students union, we believe the decision could be revisited especially when this alleged case is currently under investigationby ASUU

2. THE RECENT LECTURE BOYCOTT AND PROTEST
Some few days ago, Obafemi Awolowo university students embarked on a "peaceful" protest to agitate improved welfare. There have been allegations that facilities in halls of residence are dilapidated and need immediate attention.
We believe that the rights to peaceful assembly and that of expression are mbedded in the Nigerian constitution of 1999 (as amended in 2011). Therefore, while students of OAU have expressed their constitutionla rights, they should be commented for their consciousness. It should be recorded that similar actions as these took place in some other Nigerian Universities- Unilag, UI, Lautech, etc and it did not amount to the suspension of their Students' Union activities. No properties belonging to the university or private individuals were destroyed in the process of the lecture boycott and protest.

3. THE BEATING OF A PUBLIC BUS DRIVER FOR ALLEGED STEALING
Recently, it was revealed that a commericla bus driver from Ife town was seriously beaten by the security committee of Great Ife Students' union for allegedly stealing of stusents' valuables. While we cannot strongly ascertain whether or not the matter surrounding this issue was properly investigated despite the claim by the Union that the said driver had once been paraded for theft, the Association of Campus Journalists, OAU feel that this issue may not be enough a reason for an abrupt suspension of the Students' Union activities

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS
1: On Prof Y.K Yusuf versus Students' Union saga, the Association recommends that the Management of the Obafemi Awolowo university allow ASUU carry out the investigation and at the end, the issue be settled amicably as even fathers and their wards do clash once in a while.

2. On the lecture boycott and protest, we recommend that the university mangament should not punish or proscribe OAU students' Unio based on this act in recognition the provisions of the Nigerian constitution.

3. On the public bus driver, we recommend that students union security unit be investigated and those found guilty in the molestation of the said driver be dealt with accordingly. Never should there be a reason why 35,000 great Ife students will suffer for the alleged misdeed of some few persons as this ' misdeed' is not in furtherance of interest of Great Ife students.
4. Since NASU protested some few months ago for the wellbeing of their members among other issues and the body did not receive any jab from the management, the Students' Union should therefore not be suspended for fighting for the interest of the entire Great Ife sthdents since both bodies are recognised pressure groups which should be availed the free hand to thrive.

.... As Obafemi Awolowo university management shuts down school.

It is no longer news that the management of Obafemi Awolowo university has shut down school and has therefore suspended academic activities till further notice.
The University's Senate had a meeting today, and in the meeting agreed to suspend academic activities on campus until when a resumption date would be announced by her. The management has ordered that all students on campus should vacate school premises before 12noon tomorrow. The announcement of the closure of the school was done by OAU's Public Relations Officer in a chat with one of our correspondents.
The Public Relations Officer of the School stated that "the management gave students Mid-semester break and therefore suspend academic activities".
A member of the Senate, Prof. Adedeji added in a chat with one of our correspondents that "Management shut down school in order to forestall further protests by students and perhaps the disruption of the incoming convocation ceremony organized by the school (slated for next week)".
However, the leadership of Union has reacted to management's action claiming that, "Students would not go home, and that the management has done what she did to prevent further agitations by students". The Union leadership have also called for an emergency stakeholders' meeting.
ACJOAU as the information Council of the School would observe the trends of events and inform all OAU students as events unfold.
