Education / Ngige: ASUU Strike Won’t Happen, Funds Are Available by Gamer999: 7:20am On Nov 17, 2021
Chris Ngige, minister of labour, says the strike threatened by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will not take place.
On Monday, ASUU issued a three-week ultimatum to the federal government to implement the earlier agreement reached with the union.
Speaking on Tuesday in an interview on Channels Television, Ngige said funds are available for universities.

“The strike will not happen. For one, I know that the funds to pay are there and the ministry of education has assured me that by tomorrow, they will emanate letters to make sure that the disbursement reaches the accounts of the various universities,” he said.

“We are not paying the unions directly, so it will get to the universities’ accounts.”

‘STANDARD OF EDUCATION IS FALLING‘

Speaking during the programme, the minister said the country’s standard of education is falling and that the government alone cannot fund the sector.

“The state of education here is not anything for anyone to cheer about. The standard has fallen. I agree, but education can’t be funded by the government alone,” he said.

“I know that because I schooled here in Nigeria. I did my primary education here, secondary school education here, university here in Nsukka, Enugu.
“I did my postgraduate outside the country but I can tell you very simply that in other climes, education is not only done by the government.

“In my university days, we had people who were on what they called indigent loans. If your parents can’t pay school fees, then you are called an indigent student and you get a loan —repayable loan from the loan board.

“Then you have those who are on bursary — 50-50. You also pay back something. You have people who are on scholarship.

“I enjoyed the federal government scholarship and I left it to go into my east central state scholarship which was bigger in quantum of money and was even paying for books for us.
“So, you could then see that we didn’t leave education only for the government. People were paying and they were paying a fee you can call appropriate fee at that time.”

FuckDModz:

Looks like a naive bug.

You probably unlinked the card after collecting the loan. So the loan is linked to that card, even if you delete your account.

This is could be poor system design or just a precautionary measure to deal with soulless Nigerians.

Let it go.
noted sir, thanks for your contribution

This happened 2days ago at the University senate building. These ex students were mobilized for NYSC and were supposed to report in camp today and tomorrow but the school has refused to issue them their results. They can be heard chanting "give us our result"

Politics / Kogi Pensioners, Workers Committing Suicide Due To Hunger – Austin Usman Okai by Gamer999: 7:46pm On Oct 15, 2021
An activist and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Youth Leader, Austin Usman Okai, has lambasted the Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, over the freezing of a bank account belonging to the state government.

Tijani Ringim, a Lagos High Court judge, had on August 31, 2021, frozen the Kogi State account domiciled in Sterling Bank Plc, following an ex parte application brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), pending the conclusion of the investigation or possible prosecution.

Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.
The commission, in a 13-paragraph affidavit in support of the motion, said it received credible and direct intelligence which led to the tracing of funds suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities deposited in account No. 0073572696 domiciled in Sterling Bank Plc, with the name ‘Kogi State Salary Bailout Account.’

The anti-graft commission stated that a loan of N20billion meant to augment the salary payment and running cost of the state government was kept in an interest-yielding account with Sterling Bank.

It added that instead of using the money for the purpose it was meant for, Sterling Bank Plc, acting on the instruction of the Kogi State Government transferred the money from the loan account and placed same in a fixed deposit account.

Reacting in a statement on Friday, Okai wondered why money meant for workers was diverted due to greed and wickedness.

Describing the governor as "adminstrative fraudster", he said the imprints of his actions are on the poor workers in the state who “are victims of percentage salaries in recent years.”

He added, “Yahaya Bello's dirty and shady deal orchestrated and or coordinated to defraud and milk Kogi state is what led to this harsh decision From the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, it's unfortunate that this is happening at a time when civil servants and pensioners are committing suicide due to hunger and starvation.”

Okai asked Bello to tender a public apology to the entire state, stating that the court's decision to grant EFCC request to return the money back to the Central Bank of Nigerian is a big blow on the state and her economy.

Education / FG, ASUU Set October Deadline For Payment Of Salaries, Allowances’ Arrears by Gamer999: 9:39am On Oct 15, 2021
The federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have resolved that payment of the next tranche of the arrears of earned allowances would be paid on or before the end of October.

The government said it would also ensure that issues of promotion arrears and inconsistencies in the implementation of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) as it affects the university lecturers are sorted out and payment made on or before the end of this month.

Speaking on the outcome of discussions with ASUU that ended last night, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, said they also agreed to convene a meeting next week between Nigeria Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the National University Commission and ASUU, so as to finalise the proposed salary payment platform – University Transparency Accountability Systems (UTAS). Ngige said the meeting further discussed the issue of disbursement of revitalisation fund and agreed to wait for submissions from the Vice Chancellors of various federal universities on the utilisation of previous allocations. Ngige described the meeting as smooth and fruitful, disclosing that ASUU agreed to go back to its organs to deliberate on the outcome.

Apart from nairaland, Share what you're currently doing on your phone as the outage of major social media sites persists.
Me: I now have enough time to go through my unread mails, I'm also on Google to know things I'm curious about eg difference between thunder and lightning grin, the current situation now allows me to reconnect with friends and family via phone calls and sms. Also, I'm on boomplay streaming songs and finally on YouTube to catch some classic ukwa movies.

How bout you?
