ABUJA – Niger Delta agitators on Thursday formally withdrew the quit notice recently handed down to northerners and Yourubas from the south west resident in the coastal region. Rising from a meeting Wednesday night, the agitators also declared their support to the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) whose leadership they had earlier disowned to lead the region in the ongoing negotiations with the federal government. The agitators also announced the suspension of the planned attacks on the oil installations in the region whiling putting aside their intention to declare the republic of Niger Delta on October 1. According a statement raised at the end of the meeting, a coalition of the agitators led by General John Duku said that the withdrawal of the quit notice amongst other threats was sequel to the intervention of PANDEF and Nigeria Ethnic Nationality Youth Leaders Forum (NENYLF) led by its Acting National Chairman, Comrade Imoh Okoko. The agitators in the statement made available to Vanguard however demanded the removal of the current Group Managing Director, GMD of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Mr. Maikanti Baru from office. Those who signed the statement included General John Duku (Niger Delta Watchdogs and Convener, Coalition of Niger Delta Agitators); General Ekpo Ekpo (Niger Delta Volunteers); General Osarolor Nedam (Niger Delta Warriors); Major-Gen. Henry Okon Etete (Niger Delta Peoples Fighters); Major-Gen. Asukwo Henshaw (Bakassi Freedom Fighters) and Major-Gen. Ibinabo Horsfall (Niger Delta Movement for Justice). Others were Major-Gen. Duke Emmanson (Niger Delta Fighters Network); Major-Gen. Inibeghe Adams (Niger Delta Freedom Mandate); Major-Gen. Abiye Tariah (Niger Delta Development Network); Major-Gen. Joshua Ebere (Renewed Movement for Emancipation of Niger Delta); Major-Gen. Jeremiah Athony (Movement for Actualization of Niger Delta Republic); Major Francis Okoroafor (Niger Delta Freedom Redemption Army); Colonel Nelson Okochi Walter and many more Representatives of major groups across the Niger Delta region. The statement read in full: “After series of meetings yesterday between the high command of the Coalition of Niger Delta Agitators led by General John Duku and the leadership of the Nigeria Ethnic Nationality Youth Leaders Forum (NENYLF) led by the Acting National Chairman, Comrade Imoh Okoko coupled with the intervention of Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Coalition of Niger Delta Agitators, which comprises of over 250 groups with their leaders and representatives present at yesterday’s meeting officially withdraw our quit notice issued to the Northerners and Yorubas living in Niger Delta region, call off planned resumption of attacks on Oil & Gas installations across the Niger Delta region and beyond from September 10, 2017; suspend October 1, 2017 declaration of the Niger Delta Republic, declare support to Pan Niger Delta Forum, demand restructuring and removal of Group Managing Director of NNPC. “We have also resolved to work with PANDEF and give them our maximum support and we urge the federal government to continue dialogue and implement the 16-point demand presented by PANDEF on behalf of the Niger Delta region. This comes after an extensive consultation across the Niger Delta region, which we discover that it is only PANDEF has been working all round the clock to resolve the Niger Delta issues and have the people of proven integrity; it is a clear fact that working with any rival group such as Pan Niger Delta Congress (PNDC) is not for the interest of the Niger Delta. “The meeting also resolved that the oil/gas companies should relocate their headquarters to Niger Delta region. We also resolved to put on hold the issue of the return of oil blocs own by Northerners and Yorubas to Niger Delta people and demand that the NNPC should revisit their recent appointments, urge the federal government to replace the GMD of NNPC with the indigene of Niger Delta for the interest of peace, equity, fairness and justice. “We also thank the Nigeria Ethnic Nationality Youth Leaders Forum, Pan Niger Delta Forum for the major role they played through series of meetings which result to our withdrawal of the quit notice and we therefore agree that from now on the Nigeria Ethnic Nationality Youth Leaders Forum should be our Representatives, mediators and contact point. “We mandate them to liaise with the Oil, Gas, Marine and Servicing companies operating in Niger Delta region, Government and Agencies, NNPC, NDDC, Amnesty Office to address the issues affecting members of the Coalition in particular and Niger Delta youths in general, most importantly Employment/Empowerment of the Niger Delta youths. “We also use this medium to declare total support to the current board of Niger Delta Development Commission, as we warn all groups calling for the removal of the MD, His Excellency, Mr. Nsima Ekere to desist from it as such plan is evil and detrimental to the development of Niger Delta region; we therefore appeal to the Federal government to release funds owed NDDC for development, sustenance of peace in the Niger Delta region; NDDC has a major role to play in sustaining peace in the Niger Delta region. “Finally, we call on all our partners, groups within and outside the Niger Delta region as well as all the agitating groups in the Niger Delta region to support PANDEF and give them all the needed support to enable them continue to dialogue with the federal government in order to move Niger Delta forward. Meanwhile, we wish to appeal to the Pan Niger Delta Congress to work with Pan Niger Delta Forum for the interest of the Niger Delta region; and we want to assure all the indigenes of Niger Delta and the general public that while we await the outcome of the dialogue between PANDEF and the Nigerian government, we shall not fail to respond to any issue that may threaten the collective well-being of the Niger Delta people.” Read more at: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/09/breaking-niger-delta-agitators-withdraw-quit-notice-northerners-yourubas/ |

The Lagos State Government says it has started the “long awaited road project,” which will connect the Agric area of Ikorodu to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway through the Arepo area of Ogun State. Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, at a stakeholders’ meeting on Tuesday on the road in the Agric area of Ikorodu, requested support and cooperation of community leaders. The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Commerce, Industries and Cooperatives, Rotimi Ogunleye, said the government had also approved the reconstruction of Igbe/Igbogbo/Bola Tinubu network of roads. He said, “The Agric-Isawo-Konu-Arepo Road will have a link bridge that will connect the state to the Ogun State boundary, which will link the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.” Ambode said the road would be a dual carriageway, with lay-bys in some areas, adding that the road would serve as another link to Sagamu. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Temidayo Erinle, said the first phase of the road construction would begin 400 metres from the Ikorodu Road at Agric bus stop, with a total length of over seven kilometres. He said there would be 10 lay-bys and bus stops on the road, with traffic signalisation at necessary intersections along the corridor and street lighting, and construction of drains to control storm water. The Majority Leader of the state House of Assembly, who also represents Ikorodu I constituency, Sanai Agunbiade, commended the governor for opening up the communities, adding that the construction of the road would ease traffic movement along the corridor. The Managing Director of Hitech Nigeria Limited, the contractor handling the project, Mr. Evan Becker, said the project would include four pedestrian bridges at strategic locations. http://punchng.com/lasg-to-connect-ikorodu-with-lagos-ibadan-expressway/ |

The Kano State Government has renamed its Northwest University as Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano. The Northwest University is one of the two state-owned universities established by the past Kwankwaso Administration. The Commissioner of Information, Malam Mohammed Garba, announced the decision at a news conference in Kano on Thursday. Garba said the decision was taken during an extraordinary meeting of the State Executive Council which took place on Wednesday night. He said the council approved the renaming of the University in order to immortalise the late Danmasanin Kano, Dr Yusuf Maitama Sule, for his immense contributions to the development of Kano State, the North and Nigeria. He disclosed that the council had also approved the renaming of Dawaki Road where the residence of the late diplomat is located as Yusuf Maitama Sule Road. The commissioner said the current Yusuf Maitama Sule link road had been renamed as Jafaru Danmallam link road. “These decisions were reached after an extensive deliberation at the extraordinary Exco meeting which took into account people’s calls from within and outside the state for the State Government to honour the late Danmasani since his demise. “The Ganduje Administration is determined to honour sons and daughters of Kano who have sacrificed their lives to the development of the state,” he said. http://punchng.com/kano-renames-northwest-university-after-maitama-sule/ |
Justice Adeniyi Ademola of a Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday resumed sitting following his recall by the National Judicial Council last week. Justice Ademola was among the six judges earlier asked by the NJC to stop sitting, shortly after raid conducted by the State Security Service on his house and other judges’ in October last year. But the NJC, in a statement through its Director of Information, Mr. Soji Oye, stated on Saturday that Justice Ademola should resume his judicial duties on the basis that the court had exonerated him of the charges preferred against him by the Federal Government. Five other judges were also asked to resume on the basis that the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, had failed to institute charges against them since October last year when the minister requested the NJC to suspend them pending the outcome of the cases against them. The NJC had said the development had led to backlog of cases in the various courts where the judges presided. All the judges were therefore asked to resume sitting on Wednesday. Justice Ademola commenced sitting after 9am on Wednesday. Seven cases were listed for the Wednesday’s court session. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Joe Agi, with whom Justice Ademola was tried on corruption allegations but later discharged, had his case come up before the judge on Wednesday. Agi, being the only Senior Advocate of Nigeria, his case, although listed as number six, was heard first. When the case was mentioned, the defence was not represented in court. Agi, who was the plaintiff’s lawyer, however, sought the withdrawal of the case on the grounds that it had been overtaken by event. The judge granted the application and struck out the case. The SAN took his leave from the court immediately after the case was struck out. He declined to speak with journalists waiting outside the courtroom. But a lawyer, Mr. Femi Morohundiya, who was in th court, addressed journalist and welcomed Justice Ademola back. Morohundiya also justified the recall of the judge, following the judge’s acquittal by the trial court earlier this year. The lawyer said, “It is a welcome development. The Senate President is being tried by the executive, yet he is still sitting as the Senate President. This judge has been cleared. “So it is a welcome development that he is back to the judiciary to continue his work.” http://punchng.com/breaking-justice-ademola-resumes-sitting/ |
The Lagos State Government says it has got the approval of the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, to reconstruct the International Airport Road from the Oshodi area. The Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello, in a statement on Wednesday said Governor Akinwunmi Ambode made the disclosure and commended the Acting President for his statesman-like approach to issues. “We are very appreciative of the good gesture of the Acting President for acceding to our request which is very timely and heart-warming,” the statement quoted Ambode as saying. The statement also said Ambode gave kudos to President Muhammadu Buhari for providing the enabling environment to attract foreign investment, adding that with the upgrading of the International Airport Road, which is the gateway to the nation’s commercial nerve, the country would attract new investments. The governor had, in March this year, raised the alarm about the state of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road, describing it as a national disgrace that required immediate attention. He stated then that the state government had a design for the reconstruction of the road as well as the funds to embark on the project. The governor had said, “The state currently has a design of 10 lanes to come from Oshodi to the International Airport with interchange and flyover that will drop you towards the local airport. The contractor is ready and we have the cash.” http://punchng.com/lagos-gets-osinbajos-nod-to-reconstruct-international-airport-road/ |

The Federal Government, the 36 states and their local government areas have so far shared N1.4 trillion from the federation account, being revenue generated in the first quarter of 2017. The breakdown is contained in the monthly Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) report obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Abuja. The man is our Acting President not the Coordinator. The mistake people are making is that they hold the believe that it is the President that appoints the Vice President as the Acting President. No. Appointment? of VP as the Acting President is by operation of law and not by the act of the President. [See section 145 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).] The VP assumes the position of Acting President the moment the President transmits a letter to the National Assembly saying that he will be out of the country. That change of status is by law and not by the act of the President or the contents of the letter. Those who are reading the letter to mean Coordinator are deliberately misinterpreting the letter for their selfish aims. Moreso, the letter only says the VP should coordinate the affairs of the nation. There is nothing stating that the man should act as Coordinator. We should not join those that are playing our intelligence for their own benefits. We will appear stupid if we do so. We should focus on how to continue to pressure those in power to deliver on their promises to Nigeria. We cannot afford to put our hopes on who will come to power in 2019. Nigeria must get it right now. Enough of hoping on another candidate who we do not even know or sure of what the person is going to offer. |
