The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has dismissed the suit filed by Mr James Faleke, challenging the election of Mr Yahaya Bello as Kogi State Governor, stating that Faleke’s case lacks merit. Justice Jummai Sankey in his ruling stated that according to Section 221 of the Nigerian constitution, only the party could canvass for votes. She explained that the constitution does not recognise independent candidature, so Faleke could not lay claims to the number of votes polled before the demise of Audu and before the election was concluded. “So it may be said that he is not a candidate,” Sankey said. The judge also held that Faleke was only joined to Audu after the primaries had been concluded, but Bello, whom the APC chose, participated in the primary election that produced Audu as candidate. Sankey also added that the nomination of Bello to replace the late Audu did not contravene the constitution or the electoral act. The appellate court had earlier reserved the judgment after hearing submission from all parties involved in the matter. Counsel for Faleke, Akin Olujimi, had urged the Appeal Court to set aside the decision of the Kogi election tribunal and invalidate the election of Yahaya Bello on the ground that Bello was not properly nominated. He submitted that Bello did not undergo all the electioneering processes as required by law before he emerged as his party’s candidate in the re-run election. In his own submission, Joseph Daodu, who is counsel for Governor Bello, insisted that the issue of nomination of candidates for election was the sole responsibility of a political party. Daodu submitted that Governor Bello, having been nominated by the APC in compliance with the existing law and authority of the party remained the candidate of his party in the election. Counsel for INEC, Ahmed Raji, asked the court to uphold the election of Yahaya Bello on the ground that he was properly nominated by APC as a replacement to Abubakar Audu who passed away during the election. The Board of Directors of the Nigeria LNG Limited on Thursday approved the appointment of Mr. Tony Attah as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the company. Mr. Babs Omotowa, who has held the position for nearly five years, will be returning to Shell International in the Hague, Netherlands, according to a statement signed by the company’s General Manager, External Relations, Kudo Eresia-Eke. The NLNG said Omotowa, who was appointed CEO by the board in December 2011, would be sorely missed for his uncommon vision, professionalism, compassion and commitment. It said Attah, a former managing director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company, would be taking over from him after returning from an assignment at Shell’s Group Integrated Gas business as senior projects advisor, working on projects in the Netherlands and Singapore. Attah comes to the NLNG with a 28-year experience in the Nigerian oil and gas industry, the statement said. At NLNG, he will be responsible for sustaining NLNG’s top quartile performance in supplying liquefied natural gas to the global energy market and advancing the company’s expansion programmes, according to the statement. NLNG is owned by four shareholders, namely, the Federal Government, represented by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (49 per cent), Shell Gas BV, (25.6 per cent), Total LNG Nigeria Limited (15 per cent), and Eni International (N.A,) N. V. S. a. r. l (10.4 per cent). http://punchng.com/nlng-gets-new-ceo-omotowa-bows/

National Hospital Environmental agency reopens hospital after payment Adelani Adepegba, Abuja The National Hospital, Abuja was on Tuesday sealed off by the Abuja Environmental Protection Board over N7.7m debt for waste disposal. The hospital was sealed off following an order by a Federal Capital Territory Chief Magistrate for failing to pay for waste disposal services rendered. This was disclosed by the Chairman of Ministerial Task Team on the recovery of N9bn owed the AEPB, Shehu Lawan, according to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the FCT Minister, Muhammad Sule. The statement said the court had earlier issued summons three times, which were served on the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital to appear before it, but he allegedly failed to do so. It added that the Chief Magistrate Court II presided over by Mrs. Chinyere Nwecheonwu on June 22, 2016 ordered the sealing of the National Hospital and subsequently, adjourned the case to July 13, 2016 for hearing. The Head of Service of the Federation, Ms. Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita, had on June 30 directed all government institutions indebted to the AEPB Abuja Environmental to pay their debts or risk having a chunk of their overhead expenditure deducted from the first line charge. The National Hospital has, however, been reopened following payment of the debts owed AEPB, the statement said. http://punchng.com/national-hospital-sealed-off-n7-7m-debt/ |

Osun, Lagos and Kaduna are listed among the 10 states remitting funds into the Retirement Savings Accounts of their employees out of the 26 states that have enacted their Pension Reform Law, investigations have revealed. The 10 states that have yet to enact the law have also failed to remit the pension funds. “Ten out of the 36 states have commenced remittance of contributions into the RSAs of their employees. Similarly, eight state governments have commenced funding of their retirement benefit bond redemption fund accounts,” PenCom stated. The records also showed that 673,116 contributors, who are workers of the various state governments, were registered with different PFAs. According to the report, Lagos, Ogun, Kaduna, Niger, Delta, Osun, Rivers and Anambra states have commenced the remittance of contributions to six PFAs and were funding their accrued rights. It explained that Imo State had yet to commence remittance of pension contributions, but that the Imo State University was currently implementing the Contributory Pension Scheme but not yet funding its accrued rights. Zamfara State has also commenced remittance of contributions to the PFAs but yet to fund its accrued rights. PenCom stated that Jigawa State had transferred its pension assets to six PFAs for management, while Kano had yet to transfer its assets to the PFAs. According to the report, the remaining 26 states have yet to commence remittance of funds into their workers’ RSAs or fund their accrued rights. The commission also said it conducted on site reviews of some self-funded government agencies to assess their compliance level with the Pension Reform Act, 2014, adding that the assessment process was expected to ensure full compliance by the relevant agencies. PenCom introduced some guidelines to the pension administrators for registration of state and local government employees to enable them to adopt suitable structures for the implementation of the CPS. Part of the objectives of the guidelines is to ensure complete coverage in the states in the shortest possible time. According to the guidelines, the law gives concession to the states and local governments to implement the structured approach to the registration of their employees. Both levels of government are expected to select a number of PFAs and allocate their Ministries, Departments and Agencies to each, while the employees are to freely register with the PFAs. The Director-General, PenCom, Mrs. Chinelo Anohu-Amazu, said while some states had adopted the CPS, many had yet to fully implement it. The situation, she explained, had denied the states of the advantages of the contributory pension model, including its sustainability as a system, robust framework that eliminates the incentives for corruption in benefits administration, and ability to access the pool of investible pension funds to drive economic and infrastructural development in their respective domains. Anohu-Amazu stated that the scheme had so far delivered all the major objectives of the reform, adding that since its establishment in 2004, there had been no case of malpractice recorded in the administration of the CPS. The world is now against you. The international community that you have been masquerading your heinous acts to appeal to have started turning their backs against you, the next step is to officially brand you as terrorists. This is because you have been trapped, you refused blindly to have a round table discussion after the FG suspended major military operations in the Niger Delta. Welcome to destruction cos your aims are not truly human driven but an act of deception laced with cowardice. |

Saraki, Ekweremadu Arrive In Court around 8.46am today For Alleged Senate Rules Forgery. Nigeria’s Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu are in court to face trial on alleged criminal conspiracy and forgery of the Senate Standing Rules, 2015. Senate Saraki is being arraigned along with his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, former Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr Salisu Maikasuwa and his deputy, Mr Benedict Efeturi. In the affidavit filed on June 10, the Investigative Police Officer (IPO), swore that the investigation into the case had been concluded. The affidavit read: “The charges filed through the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, by the Federal Government, against the senators reads that you, Salisu Abubakar Maikasuwa, Benedict Efeturi, Dr. Olubukola Saraki and Ike Ekweremadu, on or about, the 9th of June, 2015, at the National Assembly complex, Three Arms Zone, Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this court, conspired amongst yourselves to forge the Senate Standing Order, 2011 (as amended) and you thereby committed the offence of conspiracy, punishable under Section 97 (1) of the Penal Code Law”. It also accused them of allegedly forging the Order, causing it to be believed as the genuine Standing Order, 2015 and circulated same for use during the inauguration of the 8th Senate of the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Senator Saraki has maintained that he knows nothing about how the rules adopted in the inauguration of the Eighth Senate on June 9, 2015 was formulated. He said the on-going efforts to drag him into a case of forgery before the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, was just another phase in the orchestrated persecution he has faced since he emerged as Senate President a little over a year ago. Saraki, in a statement by his spokesman, Mr Yusuph Olaniyonu, stated that he was not a part of the leadership of the 7th Senate that made the rules in question and prior to his unanimous election as Senate President on June 9, 2015, he was merely a Senator-elect like all his colleagues and therefore was not in a position to influence the rules that were to be used in the conduct of the election. http://www.channelstv.com/2016/06/27/saraki-others-to-appear-in-court-for-senate-rules-forgery/ |
