An Emirates flight EK 262 from Sao Paulo, Brazil to Dubai, United Arab Emirates was Saturday forced to make an emergency landing in Lagos due to the deteriorating health condition of a passengers believed to have ingested cocaine. After screening by anti-narcotic officials four other passengers are currently under interrogation after testing positive to drug ingestion. One of the suspects was immediately hospitalised as doctors battle to save his life. Chairman/Chief Executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Col. Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah (retd.) who said that the suspect is responding to treatment called for stiffer penalty against drug trafficking. NDLEA commander at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos, Mr. Ahmadu Garba said that the Emirates flight left Sao Paulo, Brazil to Dubai but was forced to come to Lagos due to the health condition of a passenger on board who ingested cocaine. “A passenger complained of severe abdominal pains and later suffered three recurrent seizures thus necessitating an emergency landing in Lagos. “Upon arrival, four other passengers tested positive for narcotic ingestion. They are Okeh Desmond, Ezeanya Nnaemeka, Christopher Nonso and Chibusi Promise. All the suspects are under observation” Garba stated.

The famous dictum “If you look after your car, your car will look after you” is certainly true in many respects. Sadly, though, few motorists are knowledgeably caring for, or fully understand, the way their vehicles work. Some functional knowledge will keep your relationship with your automobile running smoothly!

Many drivers are actually unknowingly damaging their vehicles or, at the very least, making themselves quite vulnerable to some mischievous roadside mechanics. The following are the 10 of the most common mistakes motorists make every day while completely oblivious of the damaging consequences.

Most of these points will, at the very least, hit us in our pockets in the near future. How many, if you can eat the humble-pie, are you guilty of?

1.Oil changes and servicing: Engine oil is a vital component in your car. Some people will wrongly assume that if the car takes five litres of oil and they have topped up this year by five litres, then there is no point in changing the oil. Oil degrades, and the reduction in oil level is due to the thinner high-quality oil getting burned or just seeping out of the engine; the sludge, grime and metal particles build up in the residue. So topping up is not the same as changing the oil. The oil level is dangerously low in over 70 per cent of cars – check your oil levels today.

2. Incorrect tyre pressures: This (overinflation, in particular, which is very common in Nigeria due to the ignorance of roadside “vulcanisers”) causes additional heat to build up in the tyres due to extra-flexing. The car has to work harder, reducing fuel economy. With under-inflated tyres, the handling becomes unpredictable at best because the tyre naturally goes bouncy. Braking is also significantly reduced.

3. Not allowing turbo to cool down: How many people with turbo-driven engine drive it hard and then fail to allow the turbo to cool down properly? In Europe, increasingly production cars have turbos to meet emissions and power requirements. The turbo is spinning at between 100,000 rpm and 200,000 rpm and gets very hot. The moment the engine is turned off, you starve it of fresh oil, unless your automobile’s oil pump keeps running. The oil in the turbo gets fried and essentially leaves your turbo spinning with no lubrication! Your turbo will soon need replacing if this is your driving style.

4. Driving hard on a cold engine: Don’t use higher engine rpm’s (like revving or over-revving the engine) when it’s cold (especially early in the morning), until an engine is warm; it will run rich—i.e. dumps fuel into the combustion chamber. Your engine is most at risk from damage when cold, so putting undue stress on it by high revving will exponentially increase the damage done. The combustion process does not become efficient until the engine reaches its operating temperature. An inefficient burn leaves acids and other toxins that eat your engine. The oil also takes a short while to flow properly at start up; so, ideally, you should let the engine tick over for three to ten seconds, then drive off at a steady pace keeping under 23,000 rpm. Do not use the top half of the rev range until the engine reaches operating temperature. This applies as much to modern engines with catalytic converters as it does to older engines. Don’t leave the engine idling to warm it up, just drive it (after giving it 30 seconds for the oil pressure to come up and get the oil to fully circulate).

5. Short journeys: Just as driving off too quickly damages an engine, so will doing short journeys. The problem with a short journey is that the engine never reaches its operating temperature. So, for the reasons detailed in the ‘driving off too quickly’, do not drive many short distances regularly.

Use the under-one-mile walk philosophy!) While cold, the catalyst is unable to operate at peak efficiency, thus, reducing the life of your expensive catalyst.

6. Revving too high: The red line indicates the maximum permissible engine speed. At this point, the engine is under enormous stress and the components are moving at their fastest speed. Slight imbalances in the engine are emphasised at high rpm and if you prolong the high rpm for a period of time, you will more than likely throw a connecting rod through the sump (or worse). The older an engine is, the lower the red line should be. As an engine starts to produce most of its power across the middle third of its rev band, there is little point exceeding this.

7. Hand on gear stick: So many people do this but it can actually cause premature gear wear, especially if you wiggle the stick around. The stick is connected directly to the gearbox (in many cars), so the slightest pressure is transmitted to the gear selector. This is enough to cause wear and eventually your gearbox will start to grind and crunch as you change gear.

8. Riding the clutch in a manual transmission: Again, keeping a foot on the clutch is enough to prevent it from fully engaging. The clutch plate will tend towards slip and will prematurely wear. Keeping the clutch depressed in traffic or at traffic lights is also a bad idea. Just put the car in neutral when you are stationary. When the clutch is depressed you’re forcing the clutch against the release bearing. Eventually, the release bearing will just give up, having done 60,000 miles worth of pressure in just 10,000.

9. Also in manual, wrong gear selection: Nothing puts a strain on the engine like forcing it to pull the car in the wrong gear. Too high a gear strains the bottom end of the engine around the crank and con rods. Too low a gear will mean you are revving more than you need to, so the top end of the engine around the valves, cams and lifters are working too hard.

10. Driving a dirty car: This one is a little contentious but corrosion takes effect more easily on a car which is covered with a layer of dirt. A thorough clean each month and a coat of good quality wax (not polish) will do much to enhance the cars defence against corrosion.

N.B: Protect your car against the rain this season: The rains are here now and the electrical architecture with, particularly, the electronic controllers cum components of an average vehicle are the most susceptible to getting easily damaged (as a result of any vehicle getting flooded!) There’s a nano-technology product that has just come into the Nigerian market, which can be effectively used to coat or protect these vital but fragile components of an over-computerised average vehicle, even including smart phones and household electrical/electronic appliances from being damaged by water or flood. I have tested it and it works perfectly, but I’ll not mention its name here because they’ve not paid me for endorsement. However, I believe they’ll soon be advertising the product here because I’ve told them that this page is one of the most far-reaching platforms where automotive maintenance/repair products and/or services can be advertised in Nigeria. May be the preponderance of readers’ enquiries that this note will precipitate will make them start the advert from next Sunday.

Car Talk › Reps Panel Okays Frsc’s Speed Limiters by gateleo(op): 6:58am On May 24, 2016
The House of Representatives Committee on Federal Road Safety Commission has endorsed the move by the Federal Road Safety Corps to introduce speed limiting devices on vehicles in the country as part of measures to curb road crashes.

A report of the committee, which The PUNCH obtained in Abuja on Monday, indicated that the FRSC acted within the powers conferred on it by the FRSC Act, 2007, to “implement strategies to safeguard lives and property of road users.”

Part of the report read, “The FRSC was acting within its purview as empowered by the FRSC Establishment Act 2007, to implement strategies to safeguard lives and property of all road users, hence its proposal to introduce the speed-limiting device was in order.”

The speed limiters had generated controversies across the country soon after the FRSC made the idea public.

Some of those who opposed the speed limiters, including the House of Representatives, had held the view that the technology was outdated and could further expose motorists to danger rather than save their lives.

The House in particular had opposed the N36,000 fee it would cost each of the motorists to fit the device into each vehicle.

In February, lawmakers passed a resolution to investigate the plan of the FRSC after an All Progressives Congress legislator from Edo State, Mr. Philip Shaibu, raised the alarm that the device was “outdated” and had failed in some African countries, including Kenya.

Following the development, the House directed the FRSC to suspend the project, while it summoned the Corps Marshal and Chief Executive Officer of the FRSC, Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi, to appear before the Committee on FRSC for explanations.

Findings by The PUNCH on Monday showed that the committee, after seeking the views of many stakeholders, including the Nigerian Society of Engineers, National Union of Road Transport Workers, fleet operators and transport sector experts, resolved to endorse the speed limiters.

However, the committee recommended that the speed limiters should be used in addition to the deployment of more modern technologies like the ‘Spider Technology,’ as had been suggested by many of the stakeholders.

The committee also stated that the application of the speed limiters should start with commercial vehicles and other fleet operators “only.”

Politics › New Interchange In Oshodi Lagos– Ambode (Picture) by gateleo(op): 9:57pm On May 18, 2016
The Lagos State government has said it would construct an interchange at Oshodi as part of its plans to turn the area into a “world class business district”.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode stated this during a forum organised by the state’s Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development on the planned redevelopment of Oshodi, a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, said.

The interchange, scheduled to be completed in 15 months, will consolidate the 13 city and interstate parks in Oshodi into three multi-story bus terminals, Ambode who was represented represented by the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Engr. Adebowale Akinsanya, said.

According to the governor, the project is in line with his administration’s determination to transform Oshodi into a world class with business, travel and leisure activities conducted in a serene, secure, clean, orderly and hygienic environment.

“The Oshodi you see today shall be a thing of the past in the next 15 months as a world class transport interchange will be coming up,” he said.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Urban Development, Mrs. Yetunde Onabule, said Oshodi currently accommodates about one million pedestrians and 100,000 passengers daily, accessing the 13 parks scattered within the area.

She added that 76 per cent of the area was dedicated to transport and related activities, which led to serious traffic congestion and other environmental issues.
The new plan, she said would address environmental challenges in the area and lead to a drop in crime.
“This plan would see the total rebranding of the old Oshodi, thus turning Lagos into a befitting and an iconic international gateway to the rest of the world,” she was quoted as saying.

“It would also ensure an organised transport system that will ensure free flowing traffic.”
According to Onabule, the project is a Public Private Partnership initiative between the Lagos State Government, represented by Ibile Holdings, Translink Capital Development Limited and Planet Projects Limited.

Among other things, she said the interchange,” would also come with accessible walkways and pedestrian bridges and a state-of-the-art sky-walk to link all the three terminals, introduction of bus lanes, lay-bys, introduction of green parks to soften the environment and proper waste management strategy, fencing, street lighting and a dedicated security team for Oshodi including surveillance tower, CCTVs and the likes.”

Politics › BREAKING: Abducted Osun Officials Regain Freedom by gateleo(op): 8:17pm On Apr 24, 2016
The three officials of the Osun State Government abducted by gunmen in Kogi State last Friday have been released.

Our correspondent gathered that the three civil servants released on Sunday evening were still with security operatives in Kogi State and they might not return to Osogbo, the Osun State capital until Monday.

The three officials are: the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Finance, Mrs, Adebimpe Ogunlumade; Director, State Audit, Mr. Tajudeen Badejoko, and their driver, Mr. Oladapo Arogundade.

The trio were abducted around 1:30pm on Friday while returning to Osun State after an official assignment in Abuja.

The Head of Service in Osun State, Mr. Sunday Owoeye, confirmed the release of the three civil servant to our correspondent through a text message.

The HOS text read, ” Yes, the were released unharmed this evening and a public announce, ent is being made on it. They are yet to be in Osogbo.”

A source told our correspondent that Owoeye had spoken to the permanent secretary; the director and the driver, who spent two days in the den of the hoodlums.

The media aide to Osun State Governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, also confirmed the release of the three officials in a telephone interview with our correspondent.

He said, ” It is true that the three of them have regain their freedom. That is all the information I have for now. They are still in Kogi State with security operatives.

“The head of service spoke with three of them after they regained their freedom.”

It was not clear if ransom was paid for the release of the officials but there were unconfirmed rumour that the kidnappers demanded N50 million ransom.

Earlier on Sunday, the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Titilayo Laoye-Tomori was reported to have presented the names of the three abducted officials to the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries South West 10 Region, Kola-Balogun where she worshiped for prayers for their release.

The visiting Regional Overseer from Lagos, Pastor Isaac Omotosho, was said to have led the congregation to pray for immediate release of the victims.

The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party had earlier in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Diran Odeyemi, urged security to ensure the safe release of the victims.

The statement read, “We urge security agencies to ensure these people are safely released. They are the ones keeping records of Osun finances. We don’t want more damage to be done to the state’s treasury by some people, who may want to hide under the cover that those in the know are no longer available and wreck more havoc.

“It is very sad that despite the self-inflicted economic challenges that has crippled governance in Osun, the state has again found itself in this kind of situation where it has to pay ransom to effect the release of the kidnapped officials.

“It is our hope that some people in government will not see this unfortunate situation as another opportunity to enrich themselves since whatever ransom paid to effect the release of the officials will not be backed up with a receipt.”
