yeah compare to that of Nigeria. Gas, house rent, tax
I don't agree to this. A 6kg cylinder is 5k here and properly filled. House is still much affordable till date. If u wanna compare Cotonou, use Lagos and not osun or nasarawa, so u don't make the readers to have wrong impression.
Coming to tax, wat exactly do u mean. Are u talking of light or water or wat? Light and water are still very much affordable compare to naija. If u are coming from Ogun state, or most northern parts, I can agree that cost of living there is cheaper than Cotonou but very cheap at the northern part of Benin Republic

THE US POPULATION IS JUST 330 MILLION.

IT IS ALSO STUPID AND DUMB TO COMPARE A COUNTRY THAT'S BEEN INDEPENDENT FOR 400 YEARS+ WITH AN ANNUAL BUDGET OF 8 TRILLION DOLLARS, WITH A DEVELOPING NATION LIKE NIGERIA THAT'S BARELY BEE

The poster has really tried enough to capture the key features of Cotonou. Last year, I spent 10 days exploring 3 African countries; Benin, Togo & Ghana.

I felt ashamed travelling around with my powerbank then, because the availability of electricity is highly remarkable in those countries.

I can confirm those business opportunities listed by the poster.
Thanks for the acknowledgement. Stay blessed

For someone going to Togo for a short trip, where do u advise they exchange their money?
1k naira is between 800-850 cefa for black market Some may even wanna give u Lower. I will suggest u don't change much at the border. I can direct u to one of the best places to get it at the best rate but check border first, so u understand.
Moreover u can't get official rate exchange here.
Dollar to cefa official rate when I checked yesterday was above 600 cefa

Cotonou Benin republic is actually a lovely place to be with security, quality of living nd great road network, I was there last year July.
I enjoyed my stay tho but there's high cost of Living especially the rent, imagine paying 30k CFA monthly for a room self apartment but the currency issue is due to how weak naira became. As of 2019 10,000 naira was 35,000 naira CFA so now it's the same thing, you will need 30,000 naira to pay for 35,000 CFA Also
it's always a hard task for Nigerians to see house here especially students because most of this landlords don't want to rent house to Nigerians. the language barrier is issues at times, just pray you aren't caught up between 2 beninese they can Bleep you up.
They really respect their police there, they take the most little case to police station lolll..
Bikes is most common mode of transport here, you have to understand little french to communicate with locals thoo although most of them understand Yoruba.
I really miss atasi, this guys eat anything eatable with soko bread. Their English universities here are kinda sub standard tho, they spend 3 years..
Generally benin is a great place to be if you have money or great business idea to exploit.
Bravo!!! I love your input bro. Meanwhile you can't say rent is expensive. When doing your comparism, I prefer u compare Lagos to Cotonou and port Novo with Abuja. U don't compare Cotonou with places like osun, nasarawa, Ogun etc

Visited Benin in January and it was absolutely amazing, the people were friendly even with the language barrier cause I don't know french and most don't know English, I regretted why I didn't take french seriously in my primary and secondary education.

It's a very peaceful and quiet place, traveled to ouidah and visited different places, it's a good place to retire to or relocate entirely.

Op please what are the various job opportunities that one can find there if you don't want to go into business.
Sincerely this is a difficult question. For now I can say teaching in bilingual schools. And going to do Bale selection job aylt Misebo but learnt the job demand is high. So getting it isn't that easy except u keep staying with them and be pressurizing them. It's not that easy but can be u upto 10k cefa a day and 5k cefa for half day. Remember the rest of the jobs that may consider u, may require u to be flunct in french language.

I'm looking for a country to just migrate to and hustle. I don't have money for western nations yet.

I was thinking Cameroon, Benin, Kenya or Rwanda.

Any ideas?
I would have suggested Kenya but getting residence permit as a Nigerian isn't easy and the cost of traveling and settling down there is almost like traveling is gonna be high as well. Same goes to Rwanda but u will enjoy the place but I doubt if they have that good purchasing power.
Cameroon will give u flexibility cos of bilingual opportunity. Remember that both Cameroon and Benin republic is strictly for business. So without money and proper plan, u won't survive well. Since u don't have much money, Benin is my best choice for u so that u can utilize the little u have properly. Thanks

For some bilingual schools, u can get between 40-70k per term. Then for some bilingual Montessori school, they pay above 90k per term.
Then u mustn't speak french B4 u can teach in the Bilingual schools. And salary ranges from 40k to 100k depend on the subject u teach. Like presently I know of a vacancy for science teacher like, physics and chemistry.
As for the documents, ur ECOWAS passport speaks volume and when u come, u may need residence permit

No one believes the aim of everyone is to get rich, but everyone knows Nigerians are first economic immigrants. I don’t know why they love to dance around this, then go ahead to start converting their earnings to Naira to feel better.

All this talk of lawlessness and corruption is your own postulation and it is definitely not in contest here. Everyone knows Nigeria is lawless.

My point remains, there is no milk and honey flowing in these countries and anyone going there should know that. Go there and enjoy light to charge your phone and be contented. Get ready to keep your certificate aside and hustle like you are in Yaba market. Don’t think you will be wiring back money home. Simple!!
You that have been using your certificate in Nigeria, are u better off than the Alaba guyz? Smh. Who mentioned that the places are of milk and honey? They way u talk make me believe u u are not well travelled bro cos if u are, u wouldn't have said this. Do u know that Nigerian millionaires living in Benin republic and other African countries are uncountable. Are u aware that the massive growth of cotonou and Lome ports, is as a result of Nigerian importershuh Do u know that the 75% of the top business in Cotonou are own by Nigerians? Pls don't sit at a place and feel everyone going to an African country is there to shine shoe. When ur govt put a cost of clearance of 40ft container to something close or above 10m and Same 40ft ft can be cleared in Togo for 3m, wat do u expect?
Abeg let be wise and that's why the thread was tagged *Underrated Cotonou* . Keep underrating and believing everyone going to an African country, is the to play

I think the new one is lucrative cos my neighbor told me she buys from Togo to supply on credit and comes to take her money a week after. I asked her if they don't disappoint and she said no. She said it's profitable and currently looking for money to continue this biz. She took a break after giving birth. So I think it sells well and I know it will be this low quality ones.

Please can you enlighten us on means of doing business that the OP didn't statehuh... But I heard someone saying food is damn cheap in Benin republic compare to Nigeria.... That with 1k Cefa a family of four can manage it in a day. How true can that behuh.
Food is relatively cheap bro. At least some bags of foreign rice is below 20k cefa. 1kilo of garri is about 250-300 cefa. Tomato of 500 cefa can last u for a day for a family of four.
Fish is cheaper here.
Fruits like pineapple is extremely cheap, even orange

THE UNDERRATED COTONOU

Since I was born till date, we Nigerians have always looked down on a lot of neighboring countries like Cameroon, Togo, Benin Republic etc.
Well, you are not to be blamed if you are among those who look down on some of these countries, even when we have not had an opportunity to cross border.

Well I was one of those people who actually looked down on most of these countries until I had an opportunity to sail round west Africa and the narratives changed.

Meanwhile I was completely marvelled the first time I visited Cotonou, the business hub of Benin Republic about 4 years ago when Patrice Talon newly took office
Two years after I re-visited, after touring round other west African countries. I spent 3 days here and without a waste of time, I concluded to relocate down to this place based on the level of development I saw, the security, serenity etc.

Finally I am now living here and I have no regret so far.

I will say this country is blessed with the best president who is working tirelessly to improve the living conditions of his beloved citizens and I am glad hearing citizens saying positive things about the president.

Things You Don't Know About Benin Republic...

*They have currently have one of the best roads/road network in west Africa
* The maintain law and order
* Security is good
* Security personnels are friendly and don't intimidate anyone. If caught intimidating you, he or she will severely be punished
" If you are caught in a robbery attack which involves gun, forget it, u are gun forever.
* Electricity is 247. No low voltage or unecessarily interruptions.
* Steady clean water supply by the government at an affordable rate
* 247 transport system cos of good security
* Night life is topnotch.. in fact their balling na night with street light almost every nook and cranny of the city.
* Amazing beaches with super duper fun.
* Nice Bilingual schools for your kids
*Stress free movement without traffic jam.
* Policemen scattered at every nook and cranny of the town to maintain law and order and not for stop and search.
* Drugs are only bought or sold at a registered pharmacies and not from quacks or roadside vendors
* Foreigners almost have same right with citizen and can't be treated anyhow
*Women are like egg here. Any maltreatment or mistreatment, you will face the law.
*Public school, go to sch by 7:30am and return home for break by 12noon and return back to school by 3pm to dismiss between 6-7pm Monday- Friday
* You can choose to relocate from your rented apartment after a month or two cos of the privilege of monthly payment plan
* Their money now more valuable than naira in black market
*This is the only safe transit route coming from other African countries to Nigeria. Of course you should know how that helps an economy.
*Internet is steady and fast but a bit expensive
*Pepper body no common here like naija
* ETC

Business Opportunities
From My Findings So Far...

*Tailoring is a place to explore especially when you sew English wears and Nigerian attires
* Sales of any kind of electronics which you can bring from Nigeria and Togo cos they are cheaper over there and expensive here.
* Sales of second hand phones and laptops, not forgetting their accessories too. Very lucrative
* Nigerian foods are in high demand especially areas where Nigerians live more. U go sell tire
* Sales of sewing machines(more of manual)and it's accessories are in high demand cos this is their major skill work with hairdressing.
* Phone and laptop repairs needs serious attention here cos most of the engineers are not competent enough
* Sales of motor parts/bike parts. Both are very good biz here too.
* Bilingual schools are still in high demand in some places including teachers.
* Transportation biz- As a naija man, u will do better plying from border to town, if you are a smart. As an okada rider, concentrate around Tokpa, Misebo and Beach, you will be fine too.
Those who are into okirika(2nd clothes, shoes & bags), it's still very profitable till date but you must have a good contact for you not to be cheated.
Etc

Let me drop my pen here for now. I will be sharing some photos of the places I have been to like the beaches etc . So stay tuned as we will be dropping more information to give you a comprehensive info about the country generally.

Please can anyone help me with answers;
- the cost of rent of a single-room self contain and a one bedroom apartment in Cotonou, and maybe a website or app to check for apartments.
- what is an ideal(minimum) salary for a newcomer to Cotonou with regards to current cost of things in Cotonou
- is there an online market where one can check prices of simple house furnitures like mattress etc.
-and also what advise can anyone give to someone that is relocating to Cotonou for the first time.
Thanks very much
A room selfcon ranges from 15k cefa to 25k or more depend on location or landlord.

Most online platforms adverts are in french language and u can get some in fb.

As for the mattress, it depends on size but ranges from 50k cefa and above, depend on size, quality etc and u can still get fairly used ones but still expensive too

Going with a mentality of searching for a job, may not be the best. Meanwhile do u speak french? If no, it's gonna be tough but may be easier for u if u are a teacher. Sincerely, the best way is to have a biz plan and some cash to run a biz there.

Finally, as a new comer, have an open mind to enable u adapt faster and be friendly and sociable. Have a good plan B4 u come so u don't get stranded. It's a safe, serene and calm place to live.

Note: CEFA has more value now in the black market...#1000 to 850 cefa.
Hope my little info helps u. Cheers and good luck
