You have just described the actions of a very frightened man trying to talk tough to mask how he is totally petrified. Insecure9gerian is scared stiff. His fear, and the pathetic attempt to disguise it, is palpable.

I would be afraid too if I am supporting a man who has alienated everyone, with his treachery, to the extent his supporters are now left to pretend he can perform miracles with the Presidency. Ol boy, na igbadun we dey from now on because the "nest of killers" will give us a very entertaining show with their "do or die" antics. Abeg, someone pass the guguru. grin grin grin grin
PoliticsRe: How Relevant Is OBJ In Today's Politics? by Gbawe:
truth4meal: if sincerely he has lost his sting you and your paymasters won't lose sleep over him - I think that is a fair equation. Abati woke up dis morning to rant on twitter over a man that has lost his sting abi? You are here fooling ursef over a man that has lost his sting abi? GEJ is just building a solid foundation for his own downfall - watch out!!!
100% correct. Insecure9gerian is just petrified because he sees the writing on the wall. Let GEJ gain the PDP ticket if he can and then we will accept OBJ is not relevant in today's politics. Many Nigerians are simply too emotional and too devoted to personalities to see what matters. It is not for nothing the PDP is often called a "Northern Party". Democracy, regardless of how sentimental folks want to get, remains a game of numbers. The North is aggrieved because of the open treachery of GEJ. He has lost even the so-called moderates like Aliyu. In a Country like Nigeria, even with the proclivity of many towards sentiments above sense, it should still be obvious that it is dangerous for GEJ and his camp to lose everyone but his own SS , politically, only to then rely on carrying the day with bullying and cash inducement. His imposition, Bamanga Tukur, is in serious trouble as we speak. The Governors are against Tukur and, by extension, GEJ.

My view is that whether some like it or not, whether they even accept it, the North has numerical strength. Get them out of Nigeria first before talking childishly and emptily about "aboki will not rule for the next 50 years" based on some misplaced over-estimation of the power of the Nigerian President. OBJ realises this and has quickly dissociated himself from GEJ's treachery to now align himself with the ambition of the North. It is an ambition that the political establishment , whatever is said in public, considers 'just and equitable'.

Long gone is the sympathy GEJ enjoyed from powerful political stakeholders, not Nigerians - like me and you - impotent at Party level, who previously considered he was being bullied by the "born to rule" North. What the political movers and shakers now see is a hypocritical President no different to others with how he is reneging on a pledge he made to lead for one term. He has also become a "born to rule" disciple and the establishment tend to be automatic in resisting such folks. The current actions of OBJ, i.e pretending to distance himself from the treachery of GEJ to now don the toga of reparation, 'rejuvenates' him in the context of events today and the battle ahead.

Many, too sentimental to ever think critically or pragmatically, do not understand that the Presidency remains a potent tool in so far as support base is good or even average. The Presidency quickly wilts in potency when it is occupied by a treacherous man who has trampled on the notion of "honour amongst thieves" to the extent many , whether radical or moderate, are now opposed to him. GEJ's ambition, like OBJ's third term bid, unifies all to stand against him. I personally would advise GEJ to note the signs and refrain from disgracing himself. All in all, wetin consign me? I am just enjoying the show - and it will be a very good show watching GEJ attempting to gain the PDP ticket. The critical factor is that GEJ is no longer seen as meek or humble. He can't 'blindside' with that any longer.

@OP

You want to help Lagos? Then start a campaign for it to gain special status alongside whatever 'watching' duty you have now ascribed to yourself. You cannot be blind to how development agencies worldwide ( like the UN) are more honest, forthright and supportive, where Lagos is concerned, than the Nigerian federal government.

Anyway, your blog is down again. Makes one wonder whether you are serious about running a blog or if you just have a mission annexed to Nairaland. You are conveniently here discussing but your blog is erratic and failing to provide a platform for discussion such as you enjoy here. While you seem to want to be based here, when your own blog is not working, you should remember Nairaland is a glorified blog also.

Yeah, I get your point but you need to beware of mischief-makers here who have no conscience and dwell on treacherous behaviour. I think Fashola has been identified as a threat to some because of his popularity hence the hyperventilation of some folks. Here we have male forum members registering and pretending to be female and we have all sorts of dubious characters pretending to be what they are not. PoliticsRe: Can GEJ Really Win In 2015 by Gbawe:
It is pointless for anyone on either side of the argument to be getting emotional. Let GEJ clinch the PDP ticket first. Nigerians are just way too emotional to ever view things critically and dispassionately for the sake of discerning what is feasible.

Democracy remain a game of numbers. Let GEJ begin with winning the PDP Primaries.

People forget the PDP has a very large amount of Northern members as voting delegates. Many conditions came together to ensure GEJ had the support of Northern PDP delegate in 2011. Things have changed appreciably in that regards.
Some of the Northern Governors who delivered the delegates that defeated Atiku were first term Governors, back then, who were nursing Presidential ambitions. What Yuguda, Aliyu, Lamido et al did they did for themselves not GEJ. 2015, their term finishes. GEJ will have wracked up far more enemies, determined to work against him, than those even using Boko Haram to fight his Government because he led many to assist his ambition on a bogus 'one term' pledge he will have reneged on by running. that is only one angle of things.

He may certainly not do as well winning SW PDP delegates over as was the case last time if OBJ is working for a Northern candidate in 2015 whereas he was working for GEJ in 2011.

Where Alao-Akala and Gbenga daniel delivered delegates for GEJ, those men are not governors anymore and PDP delegates from those states don't have any Governor to malevolenty browbeat or threaten them. Without GEJ-friendly Governors, as was the case with Alao-Akala and OGD, nothing stops delegate from Oyo and Ogun from voting for GEJ's competitor.

GEJ will not have the support of some from the SW who helped him last time because they resented the "born to rule" bullying some Northerners deployed against "meek, humble and God-annointed" GEJ. That goodwill is gone now because no one regards GEJ as meek or humble anymore and it is PDP SW chapter always complaining that GEJ has 'marginalised' them.

There are many other permutations to consider. Let GEJ win the Primaries first. There is no need for anyone to be shedding blood before that. You cannot will GEJ to win simply because he is your kinsman or because you think "aboki" must never lead Nigeria when "Aboki" factually produces a large percentage of Nigerians in politics and even in the PDP itself. A reasonable person, accepting of the fact that numbers count in voting processes, will understand that GEJ will have it much tougher this time with even Northern moderates alienated entirely. It may not be enough , this time around, to commit another round of massive subsidy fraud to bribe everyone/everything on board.

PoliticsRe: Obasanjo Has No Choice But To Back GEJ In 2015 – Presidency. by Gbawe:
Sincere 9gerian: It is given that GEJ will win the 2015 PDP primary election by a landslide. Any PDP second term governor that insists on opposing GEJ rather than going for senatorial position(like Bukola Saraki of Kwara did in 2011), will be SEVERELY DEALT WITH immediately he leaves office. In fact, the PDP presidential primary come 2015 will be a much easier when compared with what happened in 2011, when there were many first time governor and GEJ was still unsettled.
The political adviser of Mr president said it the way it is, no need for diplomacy. Moreover, party primaries in Nigeria are not won by being diplomatic.
The real opposition will come again in the general election, when GEJ will contend with another northern consensus candidate.
How we go again. The mask slips and out comes the undemocratic threat of a charlatan who sits here everyday pretending and lying him and his master are about doing the right thing and respect for the rule of law.

If you think GEJ is god who can do and undo, using the powers of the Presidency partisanly and malevolently, then you will have the displeasure of watching your 'almighty' messiah deconstructed. We are seeking for Nigeria to become more democratic and for institutions to grow stronger as is being increasingly seen throughout Africa and you are suggesting ridiculous antics redolent of the military era.

Here you are openly disgracing Nigeria by portraying us a Junta republic and touting the notion Jonathan will dictatorially bully others to get his way or wage vendetta against some who stand against him. Also, who are you to suggest second term Governors should go to the senate instead of challenging GEJ? So everyone , including those miles better than GEJ, should head to the Senate? What a Dinosaur !!! No wonder other African Nation are making progress while we stagnate. With citizens of your mentality everywhere, Nigeria is in serious sh1t !!!

Olaolufred: Like GEJ started 2012 with a great Idea of His FUEL INCREAMENT,
He started 2013 with his campaign posters.
He is an early starter.
But Like he goofed through subsidy scandal,
He is goofing again.
I hope he will not be left to dance alone in the market square with his co-villagers watching with awe.
Either way, He has a lot to bite.
Indeed. He is always an early starter where his own self interests are concerned. I remember the man, after being sworn in, immediately swinging into action trying to push through a frivolous and self-serving 7 year single term bill, that was a crassly opportunist attempt at securing tenure elongation, while the myriads of serious problems facing the nation were ignored.

Is it not the same GEJ that used Ringim and Adoke-Bello to free Teslim Folarin from a murder charge and then had him flown to Abuja to deliver delegates to defeat Atiku. Is this not the same man who made Gbenga Daniel his SW campaign coordinator at a time Daniel only deserved stern sanction for plunging Ogun State into the legislative impeachment imbroglio? Many, many examples exist of this man's desperate opportunism and anyone who thinks he could not be behind the appearance of the New year day campaign posters is seriously deluded or into self-deceit.

GAR3TH: I'm not against the man running, I just find it funny that people think he will be the PDP candidate for 2015, when you also have numerous PDP members, like those who I mention before, with proven track records who will contest him for the pdp nomination. Chances are Jonathan will not make it out of the PDP primaries for 2015, talk-less of being the PDP candidate for 2015. Many people are acting as if no PDP member will contest him for the pdp nomination.
You are right but your point will never register with emotional folks who forget that, after all is said and done, democracy remains a game of numbers. The dynamics influencing the actions of the 'players' in 2015 will be very different to that which saw GEJ emerge the PDP candidate for the 2011 election. Let us just watch as events play out. PDP members have total discretion over their own kingmaking activities. The rest of us can only watch and enjoy the show.

100% correct. suffice to say I am enjoying watching an implosion play out ala 'a house divided against itself'. Let us hope the opposition Parties get their act together, merge and show Nigerians their togetherness. The best strategy is for a merger to happen sooner rather than latter. It will be a big advantage if Nigerians see a united and consistent grassroot mobilisation from the mega Party while they see the "nest of killers" bogged down in rancour, acrimony and do-or-die internal battles.

BoT chair splits PDP •Presidency backs S/East •OBJ group wants Ali •Atiku considers options
Written by Jacob Segun Olatunji, Olawale Rasheed and Leon Usigbe- Abuja Monday, 07 January 2013 00:00 font size

THE mother of all crises is now looming in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), barely 24 hours to the election of the chairman of its Board of Trustees (BoT), slated for Abuja.

A reliable source close to the Board revealed to Nigerian Tribune in Abuja on Sunday that the crisis which would either make or mar the party ahead of the 2015 general election is centered on the choice of who becomes the new chairman of the BoT, vacated some months ago by former President Olusegun Obasanjo out of the over 20 aspirants, including non-members of the Board who had indicated their interest to vie for the vacant seat.

Among the aspirants who had already indicated their interest for the position are Senator Amadu Ali, a former national chairman of the party, from the North-Central, the same zone that produced the new secretary of the Board, Senator Jibrin Walid; Senator Bode Olajumoke, South-West; Alhaji Shuaib Oyedokun, a one time Deputy National Chairman of the party from the South-West; Chief Harry Akande, a new entrant from the South-West and non-member of the Board, Senator Ken Nnamani, a one-time President of the Senate, South-East; Chief Emmanuel Iwanyanwu, Publisher of the Champion Newspapers from the South-East; Chief Tony Anenih,a former chairman of the board from the South-East zone and a host of others.

However, our source said that as part of a game plan to foist Senator Alli from the North-Central zone on the party as the chairman of the Board, there has been severe pressure from various quarters on the incumbent Secretary of the Board, Senator Walid, also from the North-Central, to resign his position to pave the way for Senator Ali, which he had reportedly refused.

According to our source, “all is not well in the party,we thought we could use this golden opportunity of selecting a new BoT chairman to redeem the image of the party before Nigerians and the international community, but with the ways things are going now, I’m afraid if not promptly checked, it may be the thing that will end PDP.

“Come to think of it, why are they be prevailing on the secretary of the Board to resign? To resign for who? This is not going to be possible, they have been having their way in the past, they will fail woefully this time around, the secretary should stay put while they shop for a new chairman from other zones among those who had already indicated their interest,” a member of the Board told the Nigerian Tribune in confidence in Abuja on Sunday.

Meanwhile, it has been gathered that former President Obasanjo was initially in full support of the aspiration of Senator Ali to fill the vacant seat until recently that he reportedly told some of the aspirants who approached him for support that President Jonathan as the sitting president and the leader of the party would have the final say on who would occupy the position, since he would work directly with the person and not him (Obasanjo).

The Nigerian Tribune further learnt that while all efforts were being made by the presidency to pacify the members of the Board to accept any proposal brought before the Board tomorrow, some aggrieved members across the six geopolitical zones were said to be spoiling for a total showdown with the leadership of the party in an attempt to ensure that the constitution of the party and its zoning arrangement are followed to the letter.

“The battle field for a real fight to save the soul of the party is being shifted to the Aso Rock and the dateline is tomorrow January 8 all the surviving founding fathers of the party will be there and we will speak our minds, at the end the day, I think reasons will prevail on them and do the right thing, as the ruling political party we should lead by examples and not otherwise,”another member of the Board declared while speaking with Nigerian Tribune in confidence.

However, despite all odds, findings also revealed that the trio of Chiefs Anenih (South-South), Iwanyanwu (South-East) and Oyedokun (South-West) still maintain the lead and that one of them might likely clinch the seat, should the Ali project for the position stop.

While the South-East caucus of the party had already endorsed the candidature of Chief Iwanyanwu and the decision communicated to the leadership of the party, the South-West rose from an emergency zonal meeting in Abeokuta, Ogun State last week demanding that the post be given to the zone because of its marginalization and Chief Anenih is said to be enjoying the support of President Jonathan.

Meanwhile, remembers of the Board have started arriving in Abuja ahead of the meeting and have been engaging in further consultations.

Meanwhile, as the chairman, BoT of the PDP emerges tomorrow, three governors of the party are reported to be hinging their rumoured presidential ambitions on the outcome of the race.

Weeklong investigation by the Nigerian Tribune revealed that the governors of Katsina, Kano and Jigawa may finally make up their minds on whether to run for the presidency or not, depending on which faction of the party emerges victorious at the BOT contest.

The Tuesday race for the board is reported to have polarised the party among supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan and those of former President Obasanjo, with the Otta farmer said to be angling for Chief Ahmadu Ali.

Insiders within the northern caucus of the party disclosed that the emergence of Alli may provide leverage for the three governors to eventually indicate their presidential interests which they have consistently denied in recent past.

While Governors Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Ibrahim Shema have not been mentioned directly in the 2015 race, it was learnt that the two men are potential contenders who are even more rooted in the Obasanjo caucus than Governor Lamido of Jigawa State.

A PDP chieftain in Kaduna told the Nigerian Tribune in confidence that “both Shema and Kwankwaso are strong characters with better qualifications,” adding that “the two are also very close to Alli and former President Obasanjo.

“When Alli was national Chairman, Governor Shema was the deputy national chairman of the party and Kwankwaso was the defence minister. Both men are interested in the presidency. Forget about Lamido who we see as just a bait to hide the real contenders against the president,” the source said.

Further checks showed that anti-Jonathan forces see tomorrow‘s race as final battle for the last organ of the party, especially as the president and his caucus are seen to have taken charge of the party national executive committee, leaving only the BoT for grab.

Presidency Backs S/East
While the Obasanjo caucus is allegedly pushing for Ahmadu Ali tomorrow, reports indicated that the presidency has finally thrown its weight behind the South-East, after rejecting the South-South, South-West and North-Central zones.

Nigerian Tribune was told that the decision of the presidency to support the South-East was due to three reasons, namely the alleged appointment of Chief Tony Anenih as the chairman of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the fears of a North-Central candidate who is not loyal to the presidency.

A loyalist of the presidency explained to the Nigerian Tribune that all the three northern zones had key governmental and party positions namely: North-East, party chairman; North-Central, Senate presidency and BoT Secretary; North-West, vice-president and Speaker, House of Representatives.

“South-East and the South-West are the odd ones out. Here, the president needs the block votes of South-East as he cannot be sure of block vote from the South-West. The South-South votes are also very small compared to block votes from South-East. So, conceding the position to South-East is for a deal,” the official said.

While the South-East caucus of the party was reported to have endorsed Chief Iwuanyanwu late last year, some close friends of the president were said to be pushing for the candidature of Senator Nnamani.

It was learnt that the candidature of the two men had split the president‘s men down the line, with some supporting Iwuanyanwu and others supporting Nnamani.

Another caucus from the zone was said to be proposing the former Vice-President Alex Ekwueme to break the division.

Sambo camp denies rift with Jonathan
While the scheming for the BOT seat hots up, some loyalists of Vice-President Namadi Sambo have described reports of a rift between the president and his deputy as a ploy by opponents to destabilise the president and his political team.

In a chat with the Nigerian Tribune, the coordinator of Arewa New Initiative, Mallam Aminu Salihu, said the report of Kaduna visit of the former president, Chief Obasanjo, was being manipulated to divide the presidency, adding, however, that “both the president and the vice-president are aware of this agenda from forces within and outside the party.”

“The vice-president is committed and absolutely loyal to his boss. What will he gain by working against a president who has made him one of the most engaged vice presidents in our history? The report is not true and nobody will buy the plot of schemers behind this report,” Salihiu said.

Atiku Considers Options
Meanwhile, loyalists of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar are reported to be brainstorming for the right option for their principal in the face of scheming and plotting for the presidential ticket of the PDP.

Reports indicated that outcome of the sessions may soon be presented to the former vice-president in a Middle Eastern country in the next few days.

A source within the group told the Nigerian Tribune that while his boss had indicated interest in contesting in 2015, “all issues are still on the table in the light of recent developments within the party.”

It was gathered that the former vice-president had, of late, been relating with President Jonathan, though it was not known whether the relationship had anything to do with the second term ticket for the president.

Nigerian Tribune was told that while Abubakar had increased his war chest since the 2011 polls, it was not clear if the Turakin Adamawa would still launch his presidential bid after the ongoing consultations with his caucus.

Board decries underhand tactics of aspirant
Barely 24 hours to the election of the new chairman of the BoT, the board has spoken against aspirants who, it said, had resulted to underhand tactics to gain advantage in the election scheduled to take place in the Presidential Villa.

The secretary of the board, Senator Walid Jibrin, revealed in Abuja, on Sunday, that a particular unnamed aspirant had begun a campaign which suggested that he (Jibrin) would step down as secretary of the board to enhance his (aspirant) chances of emerging in the poll.

Jibrin, who said preparation for the election was going on as planned, also denied insinuation that a candidate had already been anointed for the post, saying nothing could be further from the truth.

“May I seize this opportunity to advise contestants not to make the campaign a do or die affair and never to apply the campaign of calumny in a desperate desire to become the BoT chairman,” he said.

Deep Sight: Weak Idiots, as any student of history should know, have always made the worst tyrants.
A very good point. It was exactly the same with Shagari before he was toppled by the military. The man simply allowed a lot of corrupt and self-serving minions to lead him astray because he was not a person of strong conviction or principles. GEJ is even worse than Shagari in that regard.

Essentially, it is easy to convince a weak and unprincipled person that he can get away with anything. You are right that Lamido et al should have realised this. I especially loved the conclusion of the article and hope some Nigerian politician take note of this retrogressive and needlessly destructive feud. OBJ deserves every disrespect and treachery he gets from GEJ for his historical practice of shopping for perceived weak-minded stooges he can control instead of just playing his part to ensure competent individuals lead Nigeria.

But in all these things, the futility of godfatherism would not be lost on the country’s politicians. Perhaps, more incumbents and political heavyweights would begin to learn to allow the democratic process run uninhibited, and herein, it would seem, lies the gain of the current feud for democracy.

Deep Sight: No worries, my dear and respected friend, i just still find it improbable that anyone in Nigeria could believe such a pledge - much less our very cunning politicians - and much less such a pledge coming from such a personage as Obasanjo - in specific light of his own very notorious antecedents, re: such pledges.
Yes, it seems ridiculous some 'gladiators' agreed to sheath their sword over a pledge made by a very treacherous man but Nigerian politicians are inordinately power hungry. Many will do anything and make any deal to gain power. There is an element of things that revolves around the notion of "honour amongst thieves". These Northern Governors knew that GEJ needed their help to defeat Atiku. The calculation is that 'one good turn deserves another.

By helping GEJ, they felt Mr.President would be compelled to keep his end of the one term deal - not because he is the most upright man on earth but because even thieves expect other thieves to understand that they must keep helping each other so that their 'activities' can continue undisturbed.

@Deep Sight.

The article below gives more insight to what has contributed to the state of affairs today vis-a-vis OBJ's junketing around. This is why I emphasise that things make perfect sense to anyone that followed events back then. It is good and well for folks to mock and dismiss OBJ, a man I don't personally care for , as even the OP does but those of us who observed events back then know what OBJ pulled off to clear the way for GEJ. I personally will not get into the argument of OBJ's influence today. Important to note that the North, regardless of what many of its leaders are saying, have an ambivalent love-hate relationship with OBJ. Many of them still regard him as an ally - even if one to be watched closely.

2015: Jonathan, Obasanjo and the Creeping Feud

09 Dec 2012

OBJ VS GOODLUCK

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s decision to take a different stance from President Goodluck Jonathan in respect of 2015 may be behind the raging feud between the two leaders, but the row is introducing lessons that may change the way politics is perceived and played in the country, writes Vincent Obia

It is a paradox that the person most committed to President Goodluck Jonathan’s ascension to the presidency can be the most aggressive opponent of his second term bid. Former President Obasanjo had put his trust in Jonathan and invested significant amounts of time and energy in making him the president.

The former president’s investment in Jonathan dates back to 2005, during the travails of the former Bayelsa State governor, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha. Alamieyeseigha was swept away from office on December 9, 2005 by an Abuja-instigated storm, which also charted the way to the top for Jonathan, who was then deputy governor. Obasanjo did his best to ensure that Jonathan was insulated from the crisis of Alamieyeseigha in preparation for higher political roles, first as governor and then as vice president to the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

Even after his eight-year tenure, and as the Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees chairman from June 27, 2007, Obasanjo continued to put effort into the making of Jonathan’s ascendancy. He was a key factor in Jonathan’s assumption of the role of acting president after the death of Yar’Adua in 2010, and also crucial to his election as president in April last year.

But the honeymoon did not last. No sooner had Jonathan started asserting himself in power than their relationship started straining. Such short spells of harmony between godfather and godson at the beginning of the latter’s walk of the power path come as standard in Nigerian politics these days. In this day and age it’s difficult to find a godson and a godfather that maintain cordiality long into the tenure of the godson.

One significant lesson to pick up here is that it is becoming increasingly futile for incumbents to invest more than is meet, usually at the expense of societal and democratic values, to fix successors in office in the hope of retaining control.

Obasanjo is a politician vast in suspense and tactic. Where he really comes into his own is summoning schemes and resources to influence political outcomes. Though, that quality of his failed in his attempt to secure a third term towards the end of his eight years presidency, it did succeed in making him the most powerful BoT chairman PDP has ever produced.

Obasanjo not only ensured the emergence of Yar’Adua and Jonathan as presidents, but also paved the way for his own post-presidency politics by influencing the amendment of the PDP constitution to reserve the BoT chairmanship for only former presidents and ex-national chairmen. The board was made the highest decision making organ of the party. So when on June 27, 2007 Obasanjo romped all over the other members to become the BoT chairman, he had absolutely no difficulty pulling the strings.

But overtime, since the Jonathan presidency, there were attempts to extensively cut down on the powers of the BoT and make it mainly advisory. Obasanjo seemed to be the target of the attempt to weaken the BoT, which had culminated in an alleged plot to sack him in September last year. Many believe Obasanjo’s resignation as BoT chairman on April 3 was partly a fallout of the pressure to weaken the board, and by extension himself.

He said in a statement, “By relieving myself of the responsibility for chairmanship of BoT of the PDP, I will have a bit more time to devote to the international demand on me,” adding that his resignation would give him time “to give some attention to mentoring across the board nationally and internationally in those areas that I have acquired some experience, expertise and in which I have something to share.”

In reality, resignation from the BoT chairmanship seems to offer Obasanjo ample time to fight to keep his political influence. The strategy this time is to get Jonathan to abide by an oft-iterated promise to do only one term as president, in what analysts see as an apparent effort to right some of the wrongs Obasanjo was alleged to have done during the Yar’Adua succession politics. A section of the elite in Northern Nigeria had vehemently opposed Jonathan’s election last year, as they saw it as a usurpation of part of the region’s eight-year tenure under PDP’s rotation arrangement, which Yar’Adua could not complete. Obasanjo was a critical factor in the sidestepping of that arrangement to elect Jonathan.

Indeed, Jonathan had on several occasions while campaigning for the presidency pledged to stop at one term. He appears currently bent on defying that promise and many Nigerians are trying to bring it back. Obasanjo leads the pack of those opposing Jonathan’s second term and this does not go down well with the president.

The war of nerves between Jonathan and Obasanjo had been waged in hushed tones over the past months. But things seemed to come to a head on November 18 during a media chat, when the president openly disparaged the Obasanjo administration’s bloody invasion of Odi, in the president’s native Bayelsa State, in 1999 in an effort to rid the place of militants. Jonathan said the Odi invasion was a futile exercise that merely killed innocent locals. He was, apparently, responding to insinuations about his handling of the Boko Haram insurgency.

Obasanjo responded swiftly through Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, rejecting Jonathan’s condemnation of the Odi invasion and insisting that the move actually achieved its purpose of minimising militant activities in the area.

That public spat seemed to erase any doubts about the strained relations between Jonathan and Obasanjo.
The former president has been traversing the country and building alignments and realignments for what looks set to be a two-stage fight against Jonathan’s ambition. The first stage would be at the BoT chairmanship election on January 8 next year, and the second, at the PDP presidential election primary.

With Obasanjo now in the camp of those opposed to Jonathan’s election bid, the president is certainly up against a much more formidable opposition than he met last year. The implication is undeniably horrendous.

The disagreement between the two leaders surely holds unpleasant prospects for the country. A lot more resources and effort than was committed last year would be invested into any successful second term bid by Jonathan, of course, at the expense of society. The result, definitely, would be a quality of governance that is worse than any other the country has seen before.

But in all these things, the futility of godfatherism would not be lost on the country’s politicians. Perhaps, more incumbents and political heavyweights would begin to learn to allow the democratic process run uninhibited, and herein, it would seem, lies the gain of the current feud for democracy.

@Deep sight.

OBJ essentially carried the one term pledge on his shoulder. It is not really a case of Lamido or anyone else being gullible. Everything is about negotiation with Nigerian politics. Without wishing to belabour the point, because understanding of issues relies on one haven followed events closely at the time, the one term pledge gained GEJ a lot of support and pacified the new generation of Northern leaders who, frankly, understood it was ultimately not a bad thing to sacrifice 4 years if it helps move the old leaders along (IBB,Atiku, Ciroma et al) and they get a clear path in 2015. The obvious attractiveness of the pledge is that Governors, because of how the PDP has unravelled lately, have bright chances of becoming the Party's presidential candidate if the incumbent President will not run.

Obasanjo: We hold Jonathan to one term vow

`Zoning stays but president’s return bid valid’

By Henry Umoru

FORMER president and chairman, Board of Trustees, BoT, of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo declared, yesterday, that zoning of public offices in the party was “alive and kicking”, just as he said that the accident of history that threw up President Goodluck Jonathan as the PDP presidential candidate must be understood.

Obasanjo said Jonathan should be commended for agreeing to do one term if elected in the April general elections, to assuage the bitterness of the pro-zoning elements, saying the president should be encouraged to stick to the vow.

Speaking in Abuja during the campaign 2011 grand finale of the Jonathan/ Namadi Sambo ticket, the former president called on Nigerians to vote the PDP presidential ticket at the polls as that holds the key to actualising the Nigerian dream

All the posters indigenes and non- indigenes are saying is that is it possible for a non-Yoruba governor would govern Lagos and I don't think anyone spoke of Awori's right to anything here.

Is it because Mr X might not what Tinubu to keep controlling ACN and Mr X might just want change just as we gave Fashola a chance at it which was very impressive.

Both indigene and non-indigene just don't want another imposed candidate that would be tinubu's puppet. I believe in democracy and advancement of any Nigerian state, Lagos is too big for one man to turn to his personal business.
Alhaji, I think you have a problem with comprehending contextual examples. I provided an example consistent with the context of my general point which is that Nigerians will eventually have to move away from limiting the recruitment pool, for very important office, to those who are deemed historically more entitled than others.

If the world is moving with the wind behind them , and recording success to validate the efficacy of their models, why do we want to move against the wind foolishly? That is my point. If you don't get it, ask for clarification instead of making wrong assumptions. Anyway, you cannot get beyond the personalised hatred you have developed for Tinubu so you will remain unable to discern the point some make.

Won't be enough. Peter Obi did same but OBJ had already decided Obi must go to make way for his "son" Andy Ubah. OBJ always tries to be all things to all men. For him, GEJ's 2015 ambition will be an ambition he simply cannot support. Part of what is responsible for OBJ's longevity is his ability to do self-serving things only to turn round and pretend he acted in the interest of what is best for all stakeholders and Nigeria.

He will then show an insincere attempt to 'make amends'. OBJ is simply trying to jump on a popular bandwagon of aggrieved long knives, ready and sharp, by throwing GEJ , generally regarded as `treacherous by the political establishment, to the dogs. He will surmise it is all par for the course given that he comes from a class of ruthless politicians who value self-interest, self importance and personal relevance above everything else.

OBJ has absolutely nothing, zilch, to gain from GEJ returning in 2015 but he gains the entire Nigeria if he helps a Northern candidate emerge in 2015. Such is the treachery of the man but it must be said that he reads Nigeria and Nigerians well and knows how to play everyone against each other.

I agree with you and I think you tell the cold, unemotional truth many here may not be prepared to accept. I too think power will likely shift to the North in 2015 regardless of the sentimental rants of some folks. it is all about what the Nigerian system is ready to accomodate given that the masses show no appetite to fight for what can be optimal best. In such an environment, the powerbrokers will do their thing and just use Nigerians to rubber stamp the official aspect of their battle with each other.

abrat: Who is this sammyzacks with this long epistle? Who told u we are interested in the profile of David mark? Go open another thread abeg!!
I personally think David Mark is going nowhere near the Presidency in 2015. The Governors have become more important, in the Nigeria of today, because of what they can do at State level and how they can work for each other. Mark, from the office of Senate President, does not have the influence to counter the power of the Governors.

We must remember that everything starts with States delegates, controlled by Governors, helping a flag bearer to emerge. It cannot be overstated that the Governors won it for GEJ beginning with helping him dispose the challenge of Atiku to emerge PDP candidate. In 2011, I don't think GEJ, for many reasons, will be able to count on the assistance of even one Northern Governor.
PoliticsRe: Obj’s Kaduna Visit Stirs Jonathan, Sambo Tension by Gbawe:
Folks can glibly dismiss this report but it is accurate to me. Those who collate and merge history well will know that OBJ was the main individual who brought ambitious Northern Governors (Yuguda, Aliyu, Lamido et al) on board , with his clout, for GEJ in 2011 with the pledge that "Jonathan will serve only one term". The likes of Sule Lamido started out opposing GEJ vehemently and labelling him "ungentlemanly" and "treacherous".

After the pledge from OBJ, Lamido suddenly backed GEJ and began talking piously about Jonathan being the right man for the job. We also know the very ambitious Aliyu was initially pro-IBB but he too 'chilled' when he thought his 2015 chances would be very bright if he assisted GEJ to secure what he assumed was a one term Presidency. Same for Yuguda and overall very predictable because our Politicians are self-serving creatures ready to sell their own mother to get what they want.

Every decent political analyst understood fully what had gone down. Ambitious first term Northern Governors 'chilled' after OBJ's promise because they thought they could put up with indulging GEJ for 4 years while they still had second terms to be Governor and then , perhaps with the help of GEJ as rewards for assistance they rendered him, move on to be automatic next in line in 2015 to clinch the PDP ticket without an incumbent using tools of office (EFCC for example) to put them at a disadvantage.

Now treacherous GEJ has let everyone down to include those who used their reputation (OBJ) to make the pledge for him and those the pledge pacified to come on board for the sake of "one good turn deserve another".

OBJ is now under pressure to undo the 'wrong' he has done to the North. Personally I am enjoying watching all these shenanigans and my own opinion is that the PDP will be its own biggest enemy from here on with how events have played out to mean serious internal fracas , in a nest full of very determined killers, will weaken and decimate the Party seriously. They are already using Boko Haram to kill Nigerians and I comfortably predict the stakes will get higher as 2015 gets nearer and desperation grows on all sides for "do or die" adherents .
Well said. I was actually agreeing with you on the obama thing. It may be obtainable for a foreigner to take huge positions in the US or UK because they've had ages to greatly advance their political structures but for a nation like ours it really needs time to develop.
Thank you my guy. Political sophistication will come to Nigeria even more slowly because we are unlucky with how events have panned out to make many Nigerians, whether they care to accept it or not, highly prejudiced people who make biased judgements regarding considerations (ethnicity, gender, religion et al) that are not such a big deal elsewhere.

You will see diasporans who should know better, via seeing their fellow Nigerian take political office in their diasporan Nations, come here to say Mr.X must never govern Lagos because he is not Awori despite the fact that Mr.X may be more talented, more dedicated to Lagos and more beneficial to the State than most Aworis. Those are the sort of issues we are grappling with that indicate Nigeria still has a long way to go.

To be honest, I hanker for the systems I see working well elsewhere to arrive in Nigeria but I have pragmatically come to accept these things will "need time to develop" , as you state, watching how majority of Nigerians act, think and talk .

Without a doubt, Nigerians will become more sophisticated politically in the future to the extent ethnic origin will matter less regarding individuals gaining political positions on merit but that time is still far away in future

I was born and raised on the lagos island but I know where I am from and I'm proud of the place. If I decided to run for office in lagos as humongous as a governor, the people in my village would start wondering if I am indeed a bastard and not really their son.

I agree with what you said about the political sphere of nigeria evolving to the level where possibly one day odogwu-x's descendant may run for governor in lagos if he/she is inclined to but for the forseeable future its not practical or even sensible at all
I believe a non-Yoruba will be governor of Lagos in the end but that will happen when evolution makes that possible. When I mentioned Obama, I mean that a young man of Nigerian origin is being touted as able to achieve in the UK what Obama has achieved in the US. All this because attitudes has changed and evolution has taken care of things to ensure many now view Umunna as equal to them instead of insisting , as we see here, he is 'less entitled'. Obama, whatever the crisis the Nation was facing, could not have been President of the USA in 1960 America.

I would encourage anyone who truly loves Lagos , wherever they are from, to actively become involved in its politics. The journey of a thousand miles must begin somewhere and we will someday get to a situation where trusted Individuals many Lagosians believe have the utmost interest of the State at heart, whatever their origin, can become Governor. That time is not 2015 and may not even be upon us in the next 2 decades.

Any Lagosian, wherever they are from, should try and build the structure to become Governor of Lagos if that is their desire. Nigeria cannot exist in a vacuum and evolution will not bypass or spare us. What is happening worldwide will eventually be seen in Nigeria also. After all, many individuals of Nigerian origin are political leaders in places like the UK with the likes of Chuka Umunna touted a future Obama of the UK.

Worldwide, folks take a passionate interest in landmass they use and are affiliated with. They enter politics because they want the Cities and State they love and live in to work better. Perfectly normal. What is nauseating about Nigeria is how it is those with no affiliation whatsoever with certain States who keep obsessing about those States and its leadership. Very unhealthy, mentally, in my opinion and a sign some people carry unresolved issues around leading to these manifestation of unrequited obsessions. It is first and foremost about home, as you identify, foe mentally healthy and balanced people.

Don't you see all the Igbo Governors of Northern States that shows the North is more "politically tolerant" than the SW? DO you not see all the Yoruba political office holders in SE States that also confirms the SE to be above the SW as per political tolerance? SS nko? If you are ever in doubt with the notion that big governments fail big time, the current Nigerian government will shove that doubt down your mind. If there ever was a bad advert for government, the Nigerian government would serve as the poster brand. Over the past few months the largesse of public funds have found their way into private pockets and enterprises like stockbrokers, airlines, banks, textile companies even as farmers will likely get their own token – if the phones reach them - as government looks to share phones worth about N60 billion – pre denial – or at least 10 million phones amongst as many of them. One expects that with the popularity of ghost workers in Nigeria’s public companies, ghost farmers are certain to fill up a lot of that space. While all of these attempts at “saving the economy” always have attempts at logic in defense of them, they often fall flat in the face of common sense, rational economic decision making and at least when put against the test of scale of preference and government’s history of pumping money into private interests.

84 stockbrokers enjoyed N22.6 billion pre-Christmas cheque from the government last year. This was touted as a forbearance of margin loans but was in effect an incentive to take risks that the public will always come to bear. The same companies were only a part of companies that had refinanced their debts by, in some cases selling off their assets. The 84 companies bailed out are not likely to be seen as the moral hazards they truly are, in a country where government officials and their cronies are bailed out on everything from organizing weekend parties to flying all over the world to treat headaches, fix tummies and the other nameless diseases. The message here is clear enough; no matter how irresponsible your firm has been, the government will give you a clean state. In Nigeria today, it is essentially more profitable to be irresponsible than to do things right.

The aviation sector survives almost entirely on government’s subsidies. The government had released N300 billion (just about $2 billion) to according to its own words “save the aviation industry.” Of course years after, the industry remains unsafe and unsaved. One of the beneficiaries of the fund, Air Nigeria who got N35.5 billion has since been disbanded. The owner of the company Bar. Jimoh Ibrahim was accused of using the money to purchase banks in Sao Tome and Principe - where he doubles as some sort of envoy to Nigeria - and other properties in UAE’s Dubai. Hard to doubt these allegations, because just before the airline finally died on the weight of mismanagement it did not even have enough money to fuel a Lagos bound flight from London. Passengers were appealed to fuel the plane despite having paid the full cost of the flight. Absurd yes but absurdity has become normalcy in our climes.

As if obsessed with failure, the government has new plans to buy 30 aircrafts as part of its “plans to boost the operations of the aviation industry.” How many Nigerians can afford air travel let alone do that regularly? It costs some $500 at times to fly to and from Lagos to Abuja. The industry is the reserve of the rich yet government “is leaving no stone unturned” to ensure privileged Nigerians enjoy smooth and safe flights. The Textile Industry enjoyed a N100 billion bailout but it remains in jail. The monies as usual have not been accounted for and no one is asking questions because the government keeps throwing new distractions anyway. The latest in this distraction ballad is the N60 billion phones for farmers.

After the Permanent Secretary (PS) of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development came up with what she probably thought was a Thomas Edison-esque idea, Nigerians spared no words in their condemnation of government’s continued effort at always getting the simplest things wrong. In a face saving attempt, the Minister of the said ministry Dr. Adesina said his PS was quoted out of context. According to him, “N60 billion to buy phones for farmers is a lie” but 10 million phones for farmers is true. Of course, at the end of his statement – which can be found here http:///4fp1d one is left wondering what the minister had said differently from his PS. It sounded like the same song by different musicians. One only sang it for longer. Is the government trying to procure 10 million phones for farmers? Are we saying that in a country with 110 million phones, farmers do not have phones of their own? Are we saying that were Nigerian farmers to release a document containing their scale of preference, phones will be number one? With some 60 per cent post-production waste, inadequate irrigation, bad road, not to talk of inhibiting export policies, farmers would rather the government thinks with its head and not its stomach. If government must spend, it should at least spend with priorities in mind. Farmers already spend a lot of money on middlemen to access government support, it would not hurt them to spend one final one to acquire phones for themselves if truly it would help cut out these middle men.

Nigeria’s fuel subsidies often peak during election years. Bailouts are also rampant in the run up to elections. Many claim these monies are a reflection of efforts to build election war chests. This has not been proven but what has been proven is that the Nigerian government remains clueless at getting the right things right. Like the money released for national security year after year with the nation grappling with kidnappers, armed robbers and terrorists, funds released for food security have only left Nigeria with 112 million poor people, 70 million jobless people and fat politicians with fat foreign accounts. One of them – Governor of the least populous state - had 48 posh properties in FCT Abuja seized from him recently. He was Governor for only four years. That’s 1 house for every month he spent in office and those are the identified houses for Abuja lone! Incredible! The mathematics is pretty simple, the bigger money available to Nigerian public office holders to spend, the bigger money they spend on themselves, friends, cronies and relatives. This has been proven over and again. As the government goes shopping again, one only wonders who the beneficiaries are this time; agricultural farmers or political farmers?

My brother, this is a fall-out of the PDP's 'recruitment policy' in the SW under OBJ for 8 whole years. Stark illiterate and gangsters, with little capacity for thinking, were promoted into high office everywhere.
