Ikengawo: Tinubu and Fashola are a necessary duo.
Fashola performs and brings in the hearts of the people while Tinubu does the ugly back politics and godfatherism that is sadly needed to succeed in Nigerian politics. If Tinubu wasn't a B@stard, fashola wouldn't have had a chance to preform.

The same way OBJ's godfatherism kept Nigeria from being an arewa colony, Tinubu's might keep nigeria from being a PDP colony.

oadah: Some of us just wake up and rant some rubbish, We think And write as if Lagos consist of 80% of the voting population of Nigeria when a state like Kano is still more populated and has a higher voting population than Lagos, lagos is just slightly higher than kaduna and port harcourt, 95% of the North does not know or recognizes Fashola/ACN achievement cos they have been betrayed by the yoruba owners of AcN when Ribadu was used as a stooge and sold out to PDP, the eastern part of Nigeria will not vote Fashola because that region vote based on the party that negotiates a better deal for the political fathers.

The best Fashola can do is to go for a senatorial position in 2015 but he can't even attain the position of the senate president for the mere fact that he is in ACN, even if h goes to the senate 10 times, better part of his political career end as the governor so Lagos state *sadbuttrue*

2. Fashola would have been a failure if he had no good team working with him. His former commissioner of Finance (Prince Oyekan) was a guest at a dinner we organized back in school. This man was an embodiment of innovation, knowledge, numbers and direction. He reeled out what they've achieved and also what they are aspiring to achieve.....omo, you'll love to be associated with lagos. I felt so emmotional when he told us about their model of leadership transition. He confessed that their team we fortunate to have evolved from a dynamic crack team of Tinubu's government. He also said it is their intention to do same...i.e leave a lasting legacy in Lagos and much more raise a young generation of leaders who will perform better than they are currently doing. I felt on top of the world, cos when he said he will be delighted to have some of us in the graduating class (Business Generals as we fondly called ourselves then) mentored and prepared to step into leadership position in the state.
3. Fashola would have been a failure if his government is made up of no-gooders. Did you guys know that on Fashola's first term, ACN picked most of his commissioners for him; yet they gave a good account of themselve. On his second term, he told Tinubu to allow him pick most of his cabinet. Guess what, Tinubu oblige him, that he's earned it. Today he has a formidable crack team.

1. Going by party tenets, Fashola would ordinarily not have smelt the governoship seat if not for Tinubu. Did you guys know what Tinubu went through to sell the candidature of Fashola to all local governments and wards? It was so bad that ACN almost disintegrated. It took the intervention of Pa Enahoro for people like Afikuyomi to come back to the party, yet he was ACN's monitoring head, despite his name being on ANPP platform for the election

2. Who discovered the leadership qualities in Fashola? Lagosians? Heck-no - TINUBU. The gyst was when Tinubu told him to prepare to be the governor, and Fashola wanted to refuse, Tinubu told him it's an order he can't refuse

3. Tinubu it was that opened up the government of Lagos state to the private sector, picking industry captain as commissioners and special assistants. No wonder Tunji Bello once said in his column in ThisDay that the state executive meetings were master pieces. People like Dele Alake, Tunji Bello (US based Lawyer and Media guru), Ben Akabueze (Former MD of NAL Merchant Bank), Muiz Banire(Lawyer and Lecturer Unilag), Arc. Towry Coker(Foremost Architect), Tunde Anibaba(Almost made it to Rector LASPOTECH), Rahman Owokoniran, Hakeem Gbajabiamila, Rauf Aregbesola etc

It is not possible under this system that if you become the leader, then, you become the standard. In other countries, when there is standard, it doesn’t really matter who becomes the president. The standard is there. In Britain, America, Germany and other western countries, competence and experience are important. But the most important thing is that there is a standard that nobody can go below.

In Nigeria, there is no such standard. You become the president, governor or local government chairman and you automatically become the standard. So in such a situation, you need somebody who is clearly competent, who has a record in addition to moral base and legitimacy to succeed.

But I will say, if we must select from governors, the ONLY one fit to be president of the nation is Babatunde Fashola.

I say so because I don't believe he's the only governor that's performing and many can argue that others have out achieved him.
My main reason for saying what i'm saying is that Fashola is a modern thinker. He's the only governor that isn't playing 'catch up' with the rest of the world, but
also introducing ideas that are ahead of rest of the world's cities.

He's the poster child for dealing with urbanization world wide and every nation acknowledges this. The other 'good' governors are giving their states the things the rest of the
world has as a lower quality most of the time. Fashola is doing this and introducing new ideas, leading the path, and Nigeria will be nothing if it can't lead the world.

recently i saw on Channels TV that they're using recycled plastics to replace sewer covers. This is brilliant, and it's something nobody else has thought of. Using modern techniques and innovation to solve problems.
I respect Amaechi, Oshiomole, Sullivan, Obi, Lamido, Imoke, and Akpabio but i feel Fashola is the only innovator in this group and that's what Nigeria needs more than anything. He doesn't see himself as a 'nigerian governor' competing with nigerian governors, he's a international leader competing with the rest of the human race.



This is the mentality nigeria needs to head in a different direction. Igbos shouldn't be competing with Yoruba and Yoruba shouldn't be competeing with Hausa because we're all failing. Lets start competing with the Japanese, the Germans, the Turks the French and the Americans. Fashola represents a break away from 'village champion' mentality in Nigeria.

because of N10,000 bursary, Imagine pelting stones at some one who reduced their school fees by 50 %, for all of the students(of whatever state of origin ) it translated to over N30,000 -N150,000 reduction / session.

At least one of this must be wrong

Osun needs N216m to pay bursary - Aregbesola

Osun State government has said it would need about N216.334 million to pay the approved N10,000 bursary to each student of Osun State origin in tertiary institutions across the country.

The state governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, said this while reacting to Tuesday’s protest by students of tertiary institutions in the state, over non-payment of their annual bursary by the state government.

He explained that the non-payment was due to the fact that the amount approved was not budgeted for in this year’s annual budget.

Aregbesola recalled that his administration’s resolution to make education affordable for students was the reason he increased the bursary to N10,000.

According to Aregbesola, “in determining the accurate figure of bursary beneficiaries, this administration set up a committee that went round the country to have true number of our students scattered all over tertiary institutions. It came up with a figure of 20, 215 in 74 institutions, as against an unverified figure of 10, 264 in 62 institutions recorded by previous administration.

“Compilation of statistics took time. However, before final compilation of the accurate figure, budget for 2012 had been made. What was appropriated was N70 million, since appropriation is a compulsory requirement for government expenditure. The need to get the House of Assembly’s go ahead to meet up with the N216,334,000, who were due for bursary, this government is at the moment, processing the supplementary budget at the House of Assembly,” the governor said.

He explained that while the supplementary budget was still ongoing, students’ demand was that they should be paid the old rate.

Aregbesola maintained that if there was no fraud or mischief, no sane man would prefer to take N2,000 instead of N10,000 as bursary.

There is no need to make subjective arguments about the level of development in the education sector or any sector for that matter. The thread is open to debate, if you feel that Osun state is lagging because other states are doing better with their own resources, then present the data. That would be a more logical approach than the approach which you took which what appears to be a witch-hunt.

Osun Education Summit Ends With Calls For Policy Without Politics

After two days of intensive deliberations, the Osun State Education Summit has ended with an 18-point communiqué which stipulates that any policy related to the sector must be divested of political consideration.

The communiqué which was signed by Mrs. Modupe Ajayi-Gbadebo, Dr. A. Haastrup, Dr. E.T. Babalola, Dr. Mrs. Oluwakemi Adesina, Mr. O. Adepoju, Mr. V.O. Olaniyi, Mr. O. O. Dada and Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, the Director of Bureau of Communications and Strategy, Office of the Governor, also agreed that all appointments, recruitments and execution of projects in the education sector should henceforth, be based purely on merit.

The summit called for attitudinal change and a paradigm shift from the government to parents, teachers and students.

Government, according to the communiqué, should accord deserved priority to education so as to bail it out of the doldrums.

In order to guarantee the required quality, the summit also called for improvement in funding at all levels of education while insisting that such funds released for the purpose should be judiciously utilised.
The Summit which held inside the Auditorium of the main campus of the Osun State University, Osogbo Auditorium, focussed on a theme “Resolving the Education Crisis in Osun State: Bridging Analysis & Implementation Gaps” and offered a unique opportunity to critically review the need to recreate, renew and re-awaken the legacies of the good old days with a view to resolving the education crisis in Osun State.

More than 1,000 participants from all over Nigeria and from Nigerians in the Diaspora attended the two-day summit which received 38 memoranda and eleven business proposals from different stakeholders and the members of the public.

Among the sub-themes addressed by the summit were “Resolving the Education Crisis in Osun State”, “Quality Assurance and Capacity Building”, “Role of Stakeholders”, “Early Childhood and Basic Education”, “Funding Approaches”, “Curriculum Implementation for Functional and Entrepreneurial Education” and “Special Education and Language in Education”.

Being predominantly agrarian, the summit held further that most schools in the State are in the rural area which had implications for ensuring quality in terms of recruitment and retention of qualified staff, provision of basic infrastructure that will aid acquisition of knowledge and make learning interesting to the pupils.

The summit observed that the present administration was courageous in admitting that there were problems in the educational sector of the state which must be tackled and resolved immediately.

It was also observed that the crisis manifesting in the education sector started in the homes where parents have been engaging in the rat race for wealth which eroded the foundation of home training, engulfed our primary education, strangulated the secondary education and devastated the state’s tertiary and technical education.

The summit described as sensitive the calls for return of schools to their original owners and called for a careful but exhaustive consultations with all stakeholders in resolving the issue peacefully.

That the possibility of return of schools to their original owners in Osun State is a very sensitive issue that needs to be carefully considered and appropriate decision made after exhaustive consultations with all stakeholders;

It also criticised past half-hearted, non-existent and uncoordinated measures put up in the past by policy makers and implementers who had been paying lip service to solving the decay in the sector.

Lagos Light Rail is a light rail system being developed in Lagos, Nigeria. The system (the first modern rail-based public transport in Sub-Saharan Africa outside of South Africa) is being sponsored by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) and is envisioned to consist eventually of seven lines.[1] The railway equipment including electric power, signalling, rolling stock, and fare collection equipment will be provided by the private sector under a Concession Contract. LAMATA is responsible for policy direction, regulation, and infrastructure for the network.[2] The concessionaire will generate its own dedicated electricity.[3]

Osun: Reforming The Education Policy And its Standard


Prior to the inception of the present administration in the State of Osun, no one would ever have thought that the tremendous reformation being witnessed in the education system in the state today could be possible. Public education was a ruse and in shambles,to the extent that no one could dream of enroling his or her wards in a public school, except those without the financial capacity to afford private schools.

The students, especially of primary schools extraction were roughly dressed and mal-nourished, schools buildings were in dilapidated state,students’ performance was abysmally poor, there were no instructional materials, while the tuition fees in the state-owned tertiary institution was outrageous.

Regardless of the poor system, parents had to struggle to pay tuition fees for their wards, even when the immediate past government claimed that education at the primary and secondary levels were free.

After his assumption of office as the Governor of the State of Osun on November 27, 2010, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, in line with his quest to promote functional education and improve its standard, took the bull by the horn and put together an educational summit, involving the best brains within the state and beyond in the educational system to identify the problem facing the system and advise the government on what to do to revamp the decayed system.

The resultant effect immediately after the education summit was the reduction in the tuition fees of the tertiary institution by 50 per cent. The students who were paying between N45,000 and N50,000 in the polytechnic are now paying maximum of N25,000. For Colleges of Education, it was reduced from N28,000 to maximum of N20,000; and for Osun State University (UNIOSUN), the Medical Students who were paying N198,000 are now paying N100,000, while non-medical students who were paying N155,000 are now paying maximum of N75,000.

Meanwhile, the medical students of UNIOSUN who have been stagnated and could not continue their medical training because there is no Teaching Hospital in the institution now have cause to rejoice, as the government is spending N146 million to sponsor them to Ukraine to complete their medical training. The government is picking up all the bills for the two years programme from the tuition fees, to air tickets, procurement of visas and invitation fees, accommodations, immigration services, medical investigations and insurance and the cost for language training among others.

In line with the recommendation of the summit that conducive environment must be provided for the students to learn fast and perform beautifully, the government of the state has launched a programme called O’Schools, which would be over-seeing infrastructural development of the schools. Under this programme, 170 state of the art mega schools are being built across the state, 100 of which are for elementary schools (Grade 1 to 3) which is 1,000-capacity; 50 middle school (Grade 4 to also of 1,000-capacity and 20 High Schools (Grade 9 to 12) of 3,000-capacity each. The prototype of the elementary school is about to be completed in Osogbo, while the prototype of middle and high schools are currently being built in Ile-Ife and Ejigbo respectively.

Also, the administration has reviewed the School Feeding Programme for primary one and two pupils and the programme is now called O’Meal. It was critically examined by the present administration that the foods were being prepared in dirty environments, while the quality and quantity of the food was very poor. However, the programme has taken a new dimension, as it has been extended to pupils in primary three and the kids are now being fed with food, rich in high protein and fruits. On Mondays and Thursdays, the pupils are being fed with Chicken, with food, rich in vegetable and fruit; on Tuesdays, they are being fed with beef and some other nutritious meals; on Wednesdays, they are fed with fish and on Fridays, they are fed with eggs with their menu. The programme is costing the government N1.56 billion in a year.

While the kids are being fed, 3,000 women were empowered to cook for the kids. They were trained, provided with all necessary utensils which cost the government N124,500,000 and given soft loans, of which the government would pay the interest on it. The caterers are also kitted and the uniforms cost N18 million. The belief was that if the school children are well fed at their formative stage, it will increase their mental capacity and subsequently they will perform optimally in their education.

Determined to ensure that students in their final stage of their secondary education are well prepared for both internal and external examinations, the government has employed a Chinese Company to design a Computer Tablet, called Opon Imo which would be distributed to all the students in the high schools. It was designed in such a way that the 38 subjects being offered in schools are installed on it along with Yoruba History, Yoruba Traditional religion, sexuality education, civic education and entrepreneurship education. In all, there are 43 subjects installed on the tablet, which was designed in form of iPad. All the books that are being used from Senior Secondary School one to three, as well as WAEC, NECO and JAMB past questions and answers are in the tablet. The tablet is solar compatible for at least eight hours and it is expected to be launched very soon.

For the 129,161 students in the high schools, the government had ordered 150,000 of the tablets, so that some of them would be given to teachers and keep some in stores. There is a standing agreement that the manufacturers of the tablet would set up their factory in Osun, with a view to further enhancing economic and educational development in the state.

Besides, before the advent of the present administration, there was discrimination in the payment of WAEC fees, as the qualification examinations would be run by school and any student that falls below cut-off mark would have his or her parent levied for the WAEC fee. Things took a new dimension when Governor Aregbesola reviewed the programme and declared that once a student is qualified to be in SS3, it is assumed that such students had been prepared for the final year examination and as a result, the government would pay the WAEC fee for such students.

Still not satisfied with the way the students in the public primary and secondary schools are kitted, the government has decided to sew standard uniform for the students in a unique way, by using the style that will promote the Yoruba culture and the local producer of Adire. For the elementary school, the design reflects Adire alone, for the middle school, it reflects Adire with state crest on it, while for the high school, it is Adire, combined with plain fabric. The representatives of all the existing religions, PTA, students and other stakeholders in the state were in the committee that chose the designs of the proposed uniform.

For the sewing of the uniforms, 3,100 indigenous tailors, that is 100 tailors from each local government and Modakeke Area Office would be recruited to sew the uniform and the project is costing the government N1.85 billion.

Before the advent of the present administration, between N200 and N1000 was being given to primary schools for running cost per term per school and with this, parents were being overburdened with series of levy. To reduce the burden, Governor Aregbesola directed that for whatever reason, no teacher must collect a penny from any student for their education. Presently, the running cost per term has been placed on N400 per child, which translate to minimum of N75,000 averagely per school per term for primary schools. For the secondary schools, they were being given N150 per child per term and it has now been increased to N550 per child per term.

Also instructional materials like chalks, exercise books, attendance register, black board cleaners among others, running to over N150 million had been provided for primary and secondary schools across the state.

Also, to take care of interest of teachers, the present administration has created office of Tutor-General, which would be of the same status with Permanent Secretary and the office will be filled by teachers in the three Senatorial Districts of the state. They will be in charge of education and handle the welfare of teachers. Teacher Establishment and Pension Office (TEPO) would also be put in place and the office will be responsible for the recruitment and process of pension for teachers.

The Deputy Governor, Otunba Titilayo Laoye-Tomori who doubles as the Commissioner for Education reiterated that special allowances for teachers in the rural areas is in the offing to reduce the usual rural abandonment by teachers, adding that social amenities would be provided in the rural area to encourage them.

She said that all machinery would be put in place to ensure that the students in the public schools get the best of education which their parents, state and even Nigeria would be proud of.

Suffix to say that the measures taking so far in line with the recommendations of the education summit by the government of the State of Osun has highly increased the enrollment of students in the public schools, and this has actually given hope to the teeming populace that qualitative education can also be accessible in public schools as of old.

Chukwumerije hails Osun’s education policies

The Senate yesterday hailed the educational policies of the Osun State Government. It said other states should take a cue from it.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Education, Uche Chukwumerijie, said this while on an oversight visit to the state.

He said others must drop their party affiliations and sentiments because what is happening in Osun is capable of rescuing the country’s rotten education sector.

“The states and the country owe Governor Rauf Aregbesola a lot of gratitude for promptly laying a formidable foundation for education in the state. I will like to use this opportunity to advise other states, irrespective of your political affiliation. You must drop your ego and learn from the people-oriented projects and programmes of Governor Aregbesola.”

Aregbesola said for the country to progress, the interest of the people must be considered before any decision is taken.

He said parliamentary system of government is the essence of democracy.

He said: “The best form of political activity is in the parliament, our nation will not make appreciable progress if it focuses only on the executive, at least the parliament is where ideas are generated, they have the total support of the people.

“Parliamentary system is the essence of democracy. The assembly of the people must not be an expression but it must be put into practice.

“For a country to have meaningful development, it must not be a one-sided means of power.”

Speaking on education, Aregbesola said when he assumed office, his intention was to close down schools for about a year because of what he met.

“What was on ground was dilapidated school buildings not fit for human habitation. The conditions of teachers were nothing to write home about plus the condition of other infrastructure.”
