MAYOWAAK: I am really concerned not about the pro-GEJ propaganda of Buhari and his threat of making Nigeria ungovernable for Dr. Jonathan, but of the fact that Nigerians swallowed that hogwash hook, line and sinker and indeed excuse the pitiable state of governance by it. How do we explain the fact that Buhari is the perceived enemy of state yet everytime a Boko Haram leader is caught, there is a connection to a PDP Senator? Why do SSS not capture BH in homes of CPC and ANPP chieftains? We need to start tasking our brains to reason a bit more. According to PISA, the world is getting to that stage when the instrument of trade will be more of intellectual than fiscal. I seriously wonder how we will fare then.

Osun State: Aregbesola Opens Bilateral Talks With German State On Food Production

Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the State of Osun has opened discussions with the German state of Saxony Anhalt as part of the state’s determination to further boost its comprehensive agricultural programme.

Aregbesola, who led a delegation of top government functionaries saddled with the massive food production project of his administration to the talks which opened on Monday in Germany, has banishment of hunger as one of the six integral plans of his government.

A statement by the Director, Bureau of Communications and Strategy in the Office of the Governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, said Aregbesola and his team left Nigeria Saturday night and arrived in Germany on Sunday for the discussions on bilateral relationship.

The statement also quoted the governor as reassuring the people of the state of determination of his administration to turn Osun to the food basket of the country.

The Governor of the State of Osun is the first governor from the African continent to be in Germany on the invitation of a German state governor known as Minister President for such bilateral talks.
The Agriculture Minister of the State of Saxony Anhalt, Dr. Hermanne Onko Aikens, is leading talks with Aregbesola on how the two states can explore areas of cooperation on agricultural investments in the state of Osun.

In company with the Governor of the state of Osun is the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Wale Adedoyin; Coordinator of the state’s Quick Impact Intervention Programme, Mr. Dele Ogundipe and others.

In November last year, Governor Aregbesola had led another delegation to Zambia on drive to establish abattoir-based massive beef production project in the state.

The beef production project, called O’Beef, has already commenced in the state with leading foreign experts in beef production training interested farmers on how to produce beef in a project aimed at ensuring high income from the venture.

To realise the objectives of the massive food production, the Aregbesola-led administration had set up the Osun Rural Enterprises Agricultural Programme and the QUIIP as part of the vehicles to drive the projects.

The two agencies had supervised massive agriculture land clearing, distribution of improved seedlings, fertilizers, and loans to farmers to aid their planting activities.

As part of the efforts to make agriculture attractive as well, the government has assured farmers of its readiness to transport their farm produce free of charge to large markets in Lagos through its memorandum of understanding with the Nigeria Railway Cooperation, (NRC).

Guys, let us see the big picture. Mimiko has done well and he will probably get a second term to continue his efforts despite Akeredolu being a genuinely progressive candidate and the sort anyone would ordinarily want involved in SW politics at the highest level. Overall, events bode well for the political future of the SW. We need to look beyond the spat of politicians, itself an inevitable by-product of the "dirty game", and focus on why we all involved ourselves in political discussions in the first place i.e the desire to see the development of our States, regions and Nation. If Ondo is witnessing progress under Mimiko, then let that continue.

It is testimony to the positive changes becoming entrenched in the SW that we now see a performing Governor (Mimiko) challenged by a formidable opposition candidate in Akeredolu. The exchange of insults is partisan politics at work and ultimately not relevant enough, IMO, to obstruct from the positives going on here. Of utmost relevance to me is how this is not a battle between light and day , or Jesus and Satan, as was the case in the past. When you have great candidates facing each other, development and progress is the likely reward for the State - whoever wins. This is a situation we should all pray becomes the norm in Nigeria because Partisan politics is essentially a means to an end.

demmie1: Tinubu's house is on the busy bourdillon road, and he receives visitors openly, his government created lastma, lawma and converted agberos to tax paying business, creating different means of poverty alleviation which helped Fashola's government to reduce armed robbery cases by 80% which is openly felt (compare lagos today to 10yrs ago). so if you want to ALUU him you know where he lives you don't need to wait on the road for a chance to.

Senator Ahmed Khalifa Zanna of the Borno Central Senatorial District has denied that suspected Boko Haram top commander Mohammed Shuaibu Bama was arrested in his Damboa Road home, in Maiduguri’s GRA.

Speaking to newsmen in a telephone interview, Zanna confirmed that the suspect is his nephew, but asserted that there was nothing more than that. He said he was not harbouring Bama and that the suspect was not actually arrested in his home.

He challenged security agents, whom he accused of harassing and beating children in his house yesterday, to go and investigate the man’s relationship with the people in whose home he was arrested.

“They said they arrested the man in the house of a lawmaker in Damboa Road, and there is no any lawmaker in Damboa Road except me,” he said. “They did not arrest him in my house, they went to my house but did not find him, and instead they arrested children in my house and put them inside hot sun and started beating them. And they asked them whether they know Shuaibu Bama, and one of the boys answered yes. He then took them to where they arrest Shuaibu Bama.”

On his relationship with the suspect, he answered, “Shuaibu Bama is a son of my sister. But the lie is what they are saying that they arrested him in my house, which is lie. And we cannot hide or harbour a Boko Haram sect member. And since he was not arrested in my house, they should go and investigate his relationship with people they arrested him in their house. I don’t know anything about it and just heard yesterday.”

…What we have now is misinformation and mischief in governance. When government makes a decision, it has to pass through some procedure, unless it is emergency, which would make it compulsory to shun all the procedures. We are working on it and we have to compute the figures, which is up to N216m. The budget for the year was around N100 billion or thereabout. You just don’t spend government money anyhow; you must get appropriation for all expenditures. The House of Assembly must give legal power and that is what we call appropriation. We needed the House to get approval for the N216m.And that is what we are processing and we kept on and they felt agitated because of their exuberance.

The only thing I want to advise is that in the exercise of your rights and expression, please be mindful of the rights of others that must not be infringed upon. That is what will help me. As civilized men and women, we must be conscious of our rights and privileges as we are conscious of the rights of others. Any insult or denigration to my person has no meaning. As we all exhibit the maturity required in understanding the rights of others, I never saw anything there. Yesterday (Tuesday, October 9), the students were unruly. But I want to engage them and educate them that bursary is not a right but a privilege that we, as conscious leaders, know must be given as an extension of support to their quest for education. I am in agreement that if you cannot give absolute free education because of our circumstances, there is need to provide support for our students. Strangely yesterday, an interesting irony played itself out.

Just before I came here, I received the Senate Committee on Education led by its chairman, Comrade Uche Chukwumerije, who had come for oversight visits to all Federal Government education interventions. The report of the committee indicated that no state has educational programme and policy compared to our own. That was the summary of their comments.


[b]We are the only state today, providing nutritious meals for over 200,000 pupils in primary 1 to 4 everyday in Nigeria. This is gulping N3billion every school session. We are the only government making efforts to get school uniforms for about 750,000 students. No government has ever attempted such in history, whether during the British colonial rule or now that we have attained independence. I would go down in history as the only government planning to give electronic learning tablets to senior secondary school students of about 150,000. I want to play it down because we are still in the formative stage; I pray it works finally. I want to develop new state-of-the-art basic infrastructure, buildings and furniture for 21 high schools, each of them with the capacity to accommodate 3,000 students, sporting facilities and other recreational structures that will make learning meaningful. It includes buildings of 50 middle schools, with capacity of 1,000 students, properly equipped and 100 elementary schools for 100,000 pupils. It does not mean that these would address all the needs, but I would have set in motion an irreversible system that would make education effective, functional and attractive to both the students and parents.[/b]

Education is the development of fully grooming a citizen, such that he or she can independently live a productive life in the society and that is our goal. When you put all these together and you contrast it with what happened yesterday, you will wonder that are we really educating anybody?

Other socio-economic interventions on roads and drainage and hospitals, they ought to be affected by these, which also affect them from the education point of view. When I was in schools, we proudly used the students’ union facilities on campuses for our activities. Students willingly support deductions from their student union grants to purchase vehicles. Where would I have the money, with all that I have explained, for any frivolity? I therefore don’t see any justification for their protest. What I am waiting for is a meeting, dialogue and let us see where we have erred. Is it in unilaterally increasing their bursary allowance? Is it in expanding the coverage of the bursary or seeking the legitimate mandate to get the money? Where did we go wrong?

Some people are instigating them. Before our advent, some actions that are not quite appropriate might have been the order of the day. There is no way that N2,000 can be the basis for violent agitation. The cost of movement within the state thoroughly defeats those efforts. It totally discount the possibility of some manipulations of the inadequate provision before now, because what I found out was that half of what was released before my advent in June, 2010, had not been paid to the students. What that tells you simply is that they had enacted a strict control that would not even allow easy access to that money. Half of what was approved for release before we came on board had not been collected. Don’t forget that this bursary was meant for final year students. Final students in 2010 would no longer be students in 2012. That was what led the Pandora’s Box about this bursary thing. The agitation is not for bursary; rather, it was for the arrangement that was in existence before the advent of Ogbeni as the governor of Osun State. I hope I have answered your question.

Sir that particular question you have just answered leads us to another. Two years in the saddle, you came in with a lot of expectations and when you juxtaposed that with the realities on the ground now, how do you feel?
I feel fulfilled. Is it that I have changed the attitude of teachers? That is my Deputy Governor, who doubles as the Commissioner for Education. Maybe she should take over from here.

Last Tuesday, eminent Nigerians gathered at the Thisday Dome in Abuja for an international colloquium in honour of former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, who marked his 80th birthday. LAWAL SABO IBRAHIM rehashes some of the comments made there

The international colloquium with the theme: “Nigerian Federalism: Building on the Ekwueme legacy,” according to its organising committee, was “designed to celebrate the legacies of Chief Dr. Alex Ekwueme as a patriot and visionary leader.”

The caption of this write-up was the apt question one of the panelists at the event, former vice president of the World Bank, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili asked, and which attracted diverse reactions. According to her, Nigeria’s problem is more of incompetent people in positions, just as she stressed that the massacre of students at both Mubi and Port Harcourt remains a challenge to us as a nation.

The former minister of Education further said that Botswana, a ‘tiny’ Southern African country, recently honoured two of its former leaders for changing the nation from one which used to rely solely on foreign aid to the second most developing in Africa. She noted that this was as a result of the efforts of those leaders in utilising the nation’s new discovery-diamond, just as Nigeria discovered oil much earlier. She then asked that if Botswana could achieve what it did, why not Nigeria?
