The rapid transformation of Lagos state in the last five years got the world’s attention over the weekend as Citigroup and Urban Land Institute , ranked her as one of two most innovative cities in Africa.


According to the ranking, Lagos got the nod of the international bodies for its population, rapid progress and potential as well as positive economic climate and potential for investors while Cape Town was ranked for its green space and massive investment in public transportation, technological research and the environment.

On December 18 , 2006, just after the then Bayelsa State 
Governor, Goodluck Jonathan, had been named PDP presidential running mate to Umaru Yar'Adua, human rights activist and Jonathan confidante Oronto Douglas described in glowing terms.

Among them, Jonathan was well respected among Ijaw leaders, had built a successful development program in Bayelsa, and had been a good Governor.

A new WikiLeaks cable shows, however, that only the day before, Mr. Douglas’ true feelings about Jonathan had been different. In a conversation with an American official, Douglas described Jonathan as “part of the system of corruption that had impoverished the Niger 
Delta for decades.”

And that “successful development programme in Bayelsa”? "Even his development initiative is viewed with skepticism by the populace," Douglas said.

He said that the outstanding corruption charges against Jonathan and his wife were troubling, and that while Jonathan enjoyed the support of the "Ijaw leaders," the "restive youth" had little respect for the "so-called leaders."

However, the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, said there was no plan to cover up the findings of the committee, but that another panel had been set up to look into the contents.

Governors not chief security officers - Aregbesola

Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Argbesola, has said state governors are not chief security officers of their respective states.

Aregbesola, who spoke on Tuesday, in Osogbo said governors were not chief security officers in the true sense of the word, stressing that “no commissioner of police will listen to the directive or instruction of any governor.”

Aregbesola also made a case for the need to establish state police in the country, saying the idea remained the panacea for ensuring effective security nationwide.

A statement by the Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, said Aregbesola made the call when he signed state Security Trust Fund Law at the Governor's Office, Abere.

He said, “The bogus appellation given to the governors as Chief Security Officers of their respective states is a mere expression.

“Those who say Nigeria is not ripe for state police are not sincere. I don't know where they get their own reasoning from. Even school campuses have their own police to ensure that criminal activities are curbed in their institutions.”

onatisi: "Best Security Conscious State Governor in West Africa” dumb awards like this are only given to nigerian public officials, these organizations know that nigerian government officials will pay hard currency for such awards . i wonder how much he paid after he was told he is the award recipient

It didn’t come out of the blues. For those versed with developments in Ogun State, the recent award to Governor Ibikunle Amosun as the “Best Security Conscious State Governor in West Africa” by Security Watch Africa, was not unexpected. The award was recognition for excellence and commitment to a strongly held ideal.

The chairperson, Board of Trustees, Security Watch Africa, Dr. Theresa Oppory Beeko, had earlier disclosed that the awards were instituted to encourage governments across West Africa to confront the challenge posed by insecurity, as businesses could only thrive in a peaceful environment.

She reminded governments in the sub-region of their constitutional responsibility to ensure security and welfare of their peoples, said the group beeko.

Singled out Governor Amosun for deserving the “Best Security Conscious State Governor in West Africa” because of what she identified as his achievements in the security sub-sector since May, 2011 when he assumed the leadership of Ogun State.

It will be recalled that the administration of Senator Amosun inherited serious security challenges where armed robbers operated with effortless ease which many times forced banks operating in the state to lock their gates against customers for fear of attacks. But the governor responded positively, importing 13 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC’s) from the United States; bought 125 patrol vans fitted with communication gadgets, purchased 1000 Ak-47 rifles, 500 bullet proof vests,500 bullet proof helmets as well as 2 million rounds of ammunition for security operatives to be able to combat the hoodlums.

The state government also instituted a Security Trust Fund headed by former Director-General of the State Security Service,Col. Kayode Are as well as secured approval from the Presidency to raise a joint military police patrol team code-named ‘Operation Mesa’

At the launch of the security equipment, the governor had told the gathering that the state government had to airlift six of the APC’s from the United States because of the urgent security challenges the state was facing. Governor Amosun, who explained how the state came about the state-of –the art APC’s said, “we spotted the APC on internet at a security trade fair in US and we immediately contacted the manufacturers who were very elated that immediate order was being placed for their product. We ordered 10, but the manufacturers told us they can only get six immediately. So we decided to fly them in because of the urgency involved.”

The Inspector-General of Police, Muhammed Abubakar was dazed by the quantum of the security equipment on display at the formal flag off of the state security initiative. He told the gathering that included the Awujale of Ijebuland,Oba Sikiru Adetona,Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle that “this is the first time in the history of this state and Nigeria that this kind of donation would take place. I have done police job in every length of this country, I have served in the six political zones of this country, so I can say there is no state in this country that has donated what you have donated in a single form”.

The police chief then added that with the donation, the state government has demonstrated the commitment, willingness and capacity to safeguard life and property of those living in the state.

He recounted the hassles he had passed through when he was an Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Lagos/Ogun zone, due to non-availability of security equipment. “I was opportune to be here as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of this zone. I know what I went through without this equipment, I want to thank you (Governor Amosun) and the people of the state for this gesture and I want to use this opportunity to invite both foreign and Nigeria investors to come to Ogun State because Ogun State government by this donation has taken giant strides in the area of security.”

Interestingly, since the intervention, crime statistics in the state has crashed significantly and fatality among policemen have equally reduced.

Danbaba Suntai, Taraba Governor Buys Hellicopter, Flies It Himself Around

Danbaba Suntai was not a rich man before he became the Governor of Taraba State in the North Eastern part of Nigeria in May 2007. In fact, he rode to the Government House in a 1986 jalopy Honda car that had seen better days.

Danbaba lived in an unfenced 2-bedroom apartment, having spent the better parts of the decade running from prosecution over a fertiliser scam that he perpetuated, and the State Government was looking for him to face prosecution.

Somehow, he joined politics and when former president Obasanjo kicked against Danladi Baido as the PDP candidate, the then Governor of Taraba, Jolly Nyame wanted someone he could control, so he quickly pardoned Danbaba and drafted him as the PDP candidate.
Today, Danbaba has spent his first term and finished the first year of the second term.

Danbaba Suntai’s love for aircraft and flying is however the reason for this expose, and how this obsession has run the state aground.

By the time Danbaba got to power, the State had two aircraft parked in Kaduna since the airport in Jalingo, the state capital was not conducive. Danbaba therefore wanted a better airport, and he blew about 9billion Naira on the airport, yet, it still could not land small planes talk less of commercial ones.

In his first term, governor Danbaba acquired another small aircraft for the State. By last year he had added a second, but none of them can land in the state.

The latest gist however is the acquisition of a helicopter at the cost of over 1billion Naira last month by the Governor.

According to our findings, the State held a fishing festival at Ibbi town about two months back, and during the festival, the governor hired an helicopter which took him to the fishing festival. After the festival, he pleaded with the pilot to spend more time in the state to teach him how to fly the chopper.

Before then, yemojanews.com learnt that, Danbaba had spent quality time despite his tight schedule as governor, attending the Aviation College in Jos, as well as another training school in America to learn how to fly. So after the fishing festival, Governor Danbaba took delivery of the helicopter.

According to sources, he has built a helipad inside the Government House so that he could fly the chopper out and in by himself, without having to drive through the town of Jalingo. We gathered that ever since he took delivery of the helicopter, Danbaba had been flying it himself, at times, just for leisure and sightseeing in the state capital.

To those who live around the Government House, they could only but grumble over the noise from the Governor’s take off and landing. We were told that since he brought in the helicopter, Governor Danbaba hardly travels round the State in his official cars, preferring the chopper

Meanwhile, the state is reeking in bankruptcy as the Governor has taken loans from banks to build airstrips in his village, plus the three aircarft he bought as well as keeping the Jalingo airstrip functional.

Based on this, once the state allocation get to the banks, the financial institutions deduct their loans before leaving whatever that remains for the government. Because of this, the day to day government business is run based on new loans from banks

Let be sincerely with ourselves some state governors are working. I was in a programme last week with Govnor Fashola as a paper presenter and Amosun was also present. The chairman of the session was one of the committee members appointed by Fashola to look for a land for rice plantation, Fashola has put in place the machinery for mass production of rice. It was the committee that discovered the land in ogun state. It was the chairman that pleaded with Gov Amosun that they have discovered a land and they want him to approve so that they can complete their job. We this, ogun state people will be employed and rice will be available for all. Hope you are aware that there is going to be food shortages in Africa a proactive government should start doing something to mitigate against the effect.
