Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Do Recruiters Reject A Candidate Because Of Location? by Gbolly4unow: 3:46pm On Oct 20, 2023
As at now, there is no employment law, both local and international that says a candidate cannot be discriminated on location ground.

If your work is skilled and technical based, and in shortage in the economy. I think regardless of your location, HR might be in roundtable discussion with you and see how they can be flexible with you because you are needed like..... But, for non-technical, you need to be wise on your location, many applicants will be applied on nearby location.

Though it is both unconscious and conscious biasedness that HR professionals bring to recruitment decisions.

Crime / My Pants Are Useless; I've Already Been Used. by Gbolly4unow: 11:45am On Jan 24, 2019
MY PANTS ARE USELESS; I'VE ALREADY BEEN USED.

...Abiodun Emmanuel Oyedele

The noise is everywhere. Ladies now walk around with fear, but not her. Anytime they arrive with another latest news, she is usually quiet, as though she is not affected by the whole noise. Sometimes she tries to talk to some of her friends around her, but the noise they make give her no chance of communicating her own perspective about the matter.

Everyone in her house have been discussing the subject over and over again, and they are even thinking of how to get a machine that would be able to dry their undies without them spreading the stuffs anywhere another eyes could see. She spreads her undies at the usual place without any fear, and walks around the street without ever getting worried about how to escape from the "pants snatchers".

She is too nonchalant when it comes to responding to trends. She is of the opinion that, being worried about the stuff is adding no value to her, and so, she pushes aside the fearful thoughts; walking so majestically like the daughter of The Owner of the land. But then, where has she got her confidence from? Why would she not be afraid like others are.

At some points, the news began to spread wider. Guys were allegedly reported to be breaking in to hostel rooms of students that were home for the compulsory holidays in search for the logo of a car brand. Yet, as soon as the news get to her, she would respond as though she was not a lady, and just wave it off her mind; changing the subject of discussion.

Meanwhile, she is the voice that sings in the early hours of the morning, when others are sound asleep. She is the one that others wake up to see studying "The Living Book" and laughing ecstatically in the Holy Ghost. She shakes the foundation of her house whenever she prays, that other ladies envy her for being committed to God. The truth is, most of these ladies that are protecting their undies are into relationships with the guys that need their underpants. She had been convinced over and over again to say YES to suitors who will spoil her with money, yet, she had refused to be spoiled. Many at times had she been referred to as proud, just because of her straight NO, whenever guys come to her to know if she would love to travel on the journey of love with them.

To the lover of trends, she is not very friendly at all, hence, those who want to be sincere with themselves can boldly testify of her kindness, friendliness, and display of virtues. The only accusation they usually hold against her, is that she had decided to remain on the boring side of life; where there are restrictions to what a person can do with her life. The kind of males that you see her relate with, are those other type of guys that have refused to respond to winks and openings; those ones that cannot touch her and spoil her with cash.

And just like they had always told her, the day finally came. She was returning from one of her friend's birthday party, with lots of cakes wrapped in her bag for those she promised back home. Of course, they didn't need to follow her to the party; for they had concluded that such a party would be too dry, and to them, "life would be missing". Walking home tired on her lonely street, two guys appeared before her from different directions. She startled, and got a bit confused. Before she could think of the question to
ask, one of them had already pulled out a gun, and was now pointing it towards her. "What do you want from me?" She asked without too much of confidence. The other young man brought out a parcel, and opened it to show her. "Take off your pants now, and have this money; lest we shoot this gun and waste you."

At that time, she found herself in the reality of all the gist that she ignored and never paid attention to. "Come on, remove the stuff and let us leave as soon as we can; you are wasting our precious time!" Still standing like a statue, she tried to silence her fears and began to mumble words that even her chin could not hear her speak. "Haha! Do you want us to waste you? We will just waste you, and still use your pants. Don't let us waste you, just give us the stuff in peace, take the money, and both parties just depart in peace". And that was how she gave a response that shocked the whole world.

"You can't waste me, for I am already a waste. Tell me, how can you kill with a gun, a lady that was nailed on the cross? My pants are useless; I have already been used."

Like morons, the two guys looked at themselves, and the one pointing the gun dropped his hand dead. "How can you be already used and you are still standing to tell us?"

Now with much more confidence, she moved closer as they moved backwards. "You see, I am a Living Sacrifice, Holy and Acceptable unto God. I have given my life to Jesus Christ as My Lord and Saviour, and I have offered my body unto Him as a Living Sacrifice".

The two guys could not believe their ears. They have never heard that before from any lady. No lady had ever resisted them with such level of audacity. They looked at her again, and could no longer stay. One of them gave her a parting shot; "I wish I had known this as a church boy. I wish my younger sister could respond this way last month; she would just had escaped death. We have approached many ladies, uncountable, with their Bible in their hand, they gave us what we requested for without wasting our time. You spoke to us today as though the whole Bible dwells inside you. Indeed we can't use you, for it is obvious that you had already been used".

***

Wait. What do you think about the account given above? I'm sure you wanna ask me where it happened and the lady that made it happen. Well, to the best of my knowledge, it will happen when we stop spreading the fear, and start instilling the Faith. Enough of this fearful circulation of what is in vogue! I heard that it had even become a prayer point in some settings; "Oh Lord, keep the pants of all our ladies safe!"

What?! Enough! Let's teach our ladies Faith and not fear. Let's teach them good character, that they will stop falling into the hands of those that want to use them. Let's teach them contentment, so that they will not be carried away by money and possessions of men. Let's encourage them to carry the fire of God, and make them understand the authority of A Believer! For how long shall we continue to pray based on situations and not by the inspiration got from revelation?

Wise up believers! Let's exercise the authority that we have in Christ, and stop panicking about this noise that will soon fade away. Let's hold unto that which abides forever.
Your response to this post will go a very long way to reveal the category that you belong; whether you are a fear spreader or a Faith booster.

A Living Sacrifice cannot be used for any other sacrifice.

MY PANTS ARE USELESS; I'VE ALREADY BEEN USED.

Don't loose hope yet. Can you share your profile for proper advice?

GucciOluwa:
Good morning house.
It is a sad morning for me, I applied to five schools:
University of Wisconsin- PhD Phil
University of Cincinnati - PhD Phil
University of Connecticut - PhD Phil
Wayne state university -PhD Phil
University at Buffalo - MA/PhD Phil.
I was given admission for MA, university at Buffalo (zero funding ) with an assurance of PhD after one year if my grades are good.
I just received my first rejection from university of Cincinnati and I'm heartbroken.
The fact that I've seen two PhD admissions from university of Wisconsin on gradcafe further complicates my situation.
I'm beginning to regret not applying to more schools.
Does anyone know of schools that are still taking applications?

Dr Tobi! You have spoken well. The admonition is highly didactic.

God bless as you shared your experience.

I want to ask if the stipend given to you over there is sufficient for your cost of living without depending on anybody for support from home.

Gunnerson:
I should use this opportunity to congratulate the lucky pundits in the house that have been offered admission. I’ve been on this platform for a while noticing things as usual. I’m indeed happy because the mission of this platform is being fulfilled. I’m pretty sure potential grad students are seriously looking forward to hearing ‘welcome to America’ but these are the few points you should be aware of before leaving Nigeria. My first question is this, are you sure you really want to accept this admission offer? Oh! You’re surprised right? I’ll explain elaborately on this based on my experience. This time last year, I got a plethora of admission offers that I became bemused on the one to accept, and the ones to let go. I got an undergraduate degree in industrial chemistry from the university of Lagos, but I have never for once cherished what I studied. Throughout my university days, I never gained anything, I was never serious because I hated the smell of chemicals which emanated from the chemistry lab. I’ve always wished I studied chemical engineering. Upon graduation, I said to myself this is the best time to fulfill your chemical engineering dream. The truth is if I had known, I would have applied for an MS in chemical engineering, but because I wasn’t advised and based on ‘do it all by yourself’ phenomenon, I fell into a trap, and it took various deliberations before I was able to get out of the trap I got myself into. I knew I wasn’t going to get into top schools that offer PhD in chemical engineering because of my industrial chemistry background. I applied into 6 or 8 schools (not too sure), I applied for PhD in chemical engineering in three low ranked schools(with research areas that I don’t even like or have a fundamental knowledge of), I was eager to leave this country because I felt this country doesn’t have anything good for the youths. My first admission offer (PhD Chemistry) was from Michigan Technological University with a fully funded, amazing stipend package. I was like ‘wawuu’ I saluted myself, and said to myself, ‘Tobi, welcome to America’ I didn’t even wait for the second offer before I grabbed the first one and accepted it. Seriously, I made the biggest mistakes of my life by accepting that offer because I didn’t do enough research before; (I) showing interest in PhD, because research isn’t my thing, I’m always and will forever be in love with calculations, (II) applying into Michigan Tech, because the research areas are not what I consider funny. Not that I don’t like the research areas, I HATE the research areas. Plus, Michigan is a cold state, I went during summer, but the weather was unbearable for me, it was extremely cold and I’m allergic to cold. There was a day I was coming from school, I cried and said to myself, ‘Tobi, who sent you here! You want to come and die in America right?’ Plus, Michigan is more of a white man state, I was the only black in my department. Michigan is one of the coldest states in US, and that would have been a capital NO for me if I had done my research before leaving Nigeria. Also, I loathe trying new species of food. I’m a typical Ekiti man who’s used to our cultural foods, but it was difficult in Michigan because I couldn’t find any Nigerian store. I had no choice but to result into consuming biscuits, burger and chips for three weeks. There was a day I instructed one of my friends in Atlanta, Georgia to buy our normal foodstuffs in Nigeria for me in Atlanta, because there are quite good African stores in Atlanta that sell Nigerian foodstuffs. By the time I calculated the cost of shipping the foodstuffs to Michigan, I lost interest.
If you’ve made up your mind to leave Nigeria, please and please consider the following piece of advice;
(I) Do a thorough research on the school you’re going to, the state, and means of transportation. I faced a lot of challenges transporting myself because MTU is located in a small town. There was no train(I think train is the cheapest means of transportation in US), no BRT bus. I was left with two options, it’s either I board a taxi(very expensive) or I trek to school. My apartment was far from school, and what I did most was to trek.
(II) Please ask yourself this genuine question, why am I leaving for US? Are you interested in going to US because you’re tired of being jobless or underemployed in Nigeria? Are you going to US because you want to get a green card? Are you going to US because you have flair for international education, and research? Are you going to US because you just want to leave this country? Let me answer the questions one after the other. If the reason is because you’re underemployed or jobless, have you tried being self employed? https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/women-enterpreneurs/affiong-williams-makes-forbes-africa-s-billionaires-list/155376.html Did you know you can get grants to finance your unprecedented ideas? I’m very sure most people know Iroko TV, the CEO got grants to finance his idea and he’s a lionized young billionaire in Nigeria. https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.ft.com/content/b02cab5e-c378-11e5-b3b1-7b2481276e45 if you’re not called to be self employed, please and please, don’t go there because many are called but few are chosen. On a more serious note, what attracted me to US was the amazing stipends grad students get, but I was wrong when I got there. When I got my I-20, I was uncontrollably happy when I found out that I would be earning close to 500K naira per month after being fully funded. I was like I will have enough savings at the end of the month. Unbeknownst to me, US isn’t Ojuelegba where you can survive on 50K per month. I was staying in a one room apartment (three persons share one bathroom. Bathroom is also known as toilet in US.) and after calculating the yearly rent, I would be paying close to 2 million naira every year in what we call face me and face you apartment in Nigeria. That’s not all, I was also responsible for my health insurance, and other payments that would be made known to you when you get to the school. I realized the pay wasn’t what I anticipated. What’s left was passion, which I never had for the course I was given and the area of research that was available. I give crocodile smile whenever people tell me that they would work their asses off by combining multiple jobs in US. The truth is as a GA or RA, you will never have quality time for yourself coupled with the fact that you have projects you’ll be constantly working on. Disregard any of such information that tells you that as a grad students, you’ll have time for yourself. Especially students with science background (Eyin omo science student) be prepared to spend most of your day in the lab. If the pay is the reason why you’re going to US, please disabuse yourself from such fallacy. If you belong to the second category of people going to US because of green card, please think twice before leaving Nigeria. My first question is, are you ready to deny yourself of true love by marrying a citizen because you want to become a denizen? The bitter truth is not everybody would get citizenship through the means of securing a job upon graduation is US. Do you know how many US citizens are unemployed? The ones amongst us that might be lucky to get a good job in US upon graduation are the ones in top ranked schools. If you’re eyeing an unranked or low ranked school, have you thought of what would become of you upon graduation. Let me share a brief story of two persons with you. When I got to Houghton, Michigan, the only good experience I had was to meet some folks that graduated from Unilag. They told me the story of a Nigerian guy that concluded his PhD in MTU and returned to Nigeria to become a lecturer in Gombe State University. At first, I was like God forbid but on the long run, I saw it coming. I was lucky enough to meet the second guy, (this one is not them say) the guy got an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from Unilag and proceeded to MTU for his PhD. He graduated the semester before I clocked in in MTU. We got talking and he said he had to settle for a post doctoral program when he couldn’t secure a job. As I’m talking to you, he’s a post doc student in the department of chemical engineering. My question to him is what next after post doc? Unto my next question, are you going to US because you have flair for research? The people that belong to this category are the ones that would survive the grad school heat in US. Please don’t hesitate to accept that admission offer if you belong to this category.
Conclusions:
(1) I would advise potential admission seekers to apply for an MS program instead of the over prophesied PhD program because you can still bear unforeseen circumstances for 18 months instead of 5 years.
(2) If you’re interested in getting a good job in US upon graduation, please and please target top ranked schools in your individual programs.
(3) If you’re interested in the green Pali, please don’t lead anybody on in Nigeria before leaving because I must confess to you, black Americans are the true definition of beauty. You’ll definitely find a partner in US, but don’t ever make it obvious that you’re interested in them because of your ulterior motive.
(4) If you’re interested in pursuing a PhD program, please be sure that you love research, be sure you’re in love with your area of research because PhD is over demanding. PhD would take everything called life away from you for five years. This is not to scare you. You can do it because many Nigerians that aren’t better than you have done it. But don’t deceive yourself.
(5) If you’re more concerned about being a billionaire, please neglect grad school, and invest in your idea for five years instead of spending it in grad school with nothing positive at the end but a degree.
(6) If you have a good job or earn well in Nigeria, please and please stick to your job, don’t resign o because there’s no assurance that you’ll get something close to that upon graduation.
(7) For those interested in international education, please be very passionate about it. The end result is good. Imagine a situation where Dr would be added to your name. Oh my! it’ll be so sweet being called Dr Tobi Crowns in future. But don’t ever let go of your dreams because of grad school.
Conclusion: grad school is only interested in passionate applicants. PhD program is very demanding and be ready to pay the price. A PhD program in ABC is more demanding than BS in Electrical electronics engineering because you won’t just learn the alphabetical order but you would learn why A is A and why X has to come before Y and why B is called B and why M is an inverted W. Be prepared! Be prepared!! Be prepared!!! Grad school is interesting, but demanding.
Ask yourself this question, ‘why am I leaving Nigeria’? Please be sincere with your response. God bless you.

Bro, you have done a very good job. For Phd Applicant, would they focus more on B.sc or Msc if one has M.sc. My B.Sc CGPA is 4.14/5.00 and M.sc is 3.8/5.0. Lets assume I have research experience. With good GRE, is it advisable to apply to top notch Institutions?

Also, I studied management course, Is full funding really sure like that unlike STEM?

https://www.quora.com/What-does-the-admissions-committee-process-for-graduate-school-look-like-Do-you-sit-in-a-room-and-all-discuss-the-same-candidate-at-the-same-time-or-is-it-more-of-an-individual-process-with-opinions-aggregated-at-the-end/answer/James-Leland-Harp

A2A. First this question is about graduate schools that have departments, not about business school, law school or medical schools. These professional programs do consider standardized test scores such as GMAT, GRE, LSAT, or MCAT. However, standardized test scores alone will not get you admitted to any graduate program.

I can only answer this question based on my experiences as a professor who served on a number of admission committees and as a director of a graduate program who actually made the admission policy in conjunction with the full professors of the department. Other admission committees may have a totally different process.

The graduate schools that I have experience with required a minimum of 3.0 on a 4 scale for a four-yearbachelor's degree. Both the cumulative GPA and degree are on your transcripts. The graduate school may require GRE that have no minimum scores. They also required TOEFL that does have a minimum for international students who native language is not English. If an applicant does not meet the graduate school requirements, the department, not only does not see the application, they cannot even ask for an exception.

The department sorts the applications based on research interests as stated in the SOP and then forwards these applications to the respective research groups. The decision of who is admitted and who is not is made at the research group level which is why I alway recommend that all applicants target a research group telling them what they bring to the table. Those applicants who research interests are unclear, the admission committee has to make a judgment call to see which research group should make the evaluation. These student are at a disadvantage especially if the judgment call is wrong. The goal is to get the best students as possible.

Each research group subjectively evaluates the SOP supported by LORs to determine research potential, the ability to work at the research level. Each research group has a number of openings. The research group decides who is accepted, waitlisted, or rejected. They also say which applicants should get research group funding using RAs. The director of the graduate program determines which accepted applicants should get department funding usually TAs, and he or she then forwards these decisions to the dean of admissions who sends out letters accordingly. When an accepted student declines an admission offer, the next person on the group waitlist is given an offer.

Some research groups may still have openings. If this is case, the department may contacts the applicant who is on the wait list if he or she will consider at different research interest. However, I must point out the students can change research interested at any time; however, RAs are a yearly contact which means a student with an RA may not have funding in his or her new area of interest. This ability to change research groups is why there is funding available all year round.

Most departments have a limit, a quota, on how many students can be in the department, so for a student to be admitted, an enroll student must leave. What this means it is unclear how many students on the wait list will be admitted or at what time they are admitted. (I have personally given an offer with funding one week before classes started.)

If you are applying to a PhD program, you must demonstrate your potential to do original research which is why I always recommend writing a thesis (senior or master’s). You would given an executive summary and cite any published papers (preferably in refereed journals) in your SOP. The reason I say this is because you are being subjectively compared to the other applicants who most likely have demonstrated the ability to do (original) research.

There is no probability to this process because the SOP supported by LORs are subjectively evaluated and compared to the other applicants as I have previously stated. When you are being subjectively evaluated, the evaluation depends on the people making them. Anyone out side of the admission committee and the research groups would not know the criteria for their decisions. Another factor that is also unknown is the number of openings for a particular research group. The percentage for a research group that has no student openings is 0.

Finally my post How to improve my chances to be admitted into a top University that everyone underthe sun wants in gives you some insight as to what I and my other colleagues look for in an application. If you are applying to a master’s, see my answer to Do you need research experience toget into a top CS masters program?

Bottom line: Faculty members view applicants differently. They are looking for the best match for their particular research interests, which is why applicants should be familiar with who is doing what and where.
