boss I have a problem installing ubuntu 14.04 LTS on my dell inspiron 3520. The problem is that the ubuntu os refuses to recognize the partitions I created using windows 7 when I get to step 4. As a matter of fact it thinks there is no other operating system and sees my harddisk drive as a single unit. Please I need your help on this issue

From your write up, I think you don't understand how to install it.

Choose "something else" then go on with the next steps.

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has become the world's most valuable technology start-up just four years after it was founded.

The firm raised $1.1bn (£708m) in its latest round of funding, giving it a valuation of $45bn, which surpassed the $40bn value of taxi booking app Uber.

It has quickly risen to the ranks of the world's biggest smartphone makers, behind Samsung and Apple in sales.

The company is also set to unveil a new flagship device in January.

Xiaomi's investors include private equity funds All-Stars Investment, DST Global, Hopu Investment Management, Yunfeng Capital, and Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC, said co-founder and president Bin Lin in a Facebook post.

"This is an affirmation of Xiaomi's stellar results in four years, and heralds a new phase for the company," Mr Bin said.

Xiaomi's strategy of producing cheap smartphones has catapulted its growth to overtake giant Samsung this year in sales in the world's second largest economy China.

The company's worth is now more than quadruple the $10bn valuation it received during its last financing round last year.

Its skyrocketing valuation comes despite the intellectual property challenges it faced earlier this month in India, where sales were temporarily halted after Swedish firm Ericsson filed a patent complaint.

The Beijing-based company has set a target of selling 60 million smartphones this year, up from less than 20 million in 2013.

i didnt change d power option before d incidence.. and yes its d screen dat is pure black now it doesnt show anytin or color at all.. i was tinking its d flex like connector. tan

Can you troubleshoot ? It maybe different problems ? Check the screen connection to the board.

evening sir.. i get issue wit my system
after browsing, i came back to watch movie n den d system started an endless update.. den i got angry n removed d battery..
booting d system again.. n trying to log in, i got this first error message..;
" User Profile Service service
failed the sign- in. User Profile cannot be

more anger after few more trials den i removed d ba3 n used my screw driver n removed d harddisc n Ram n refixed it.. den a new problem arose.. screen is black..
i had screen issues before but an ic using leaded wire, was shunted.. it was a backlight issues that time n before d repair u cud notice diming of d light n if u look closely d display graphic... but now..
on onning its pure black n doesnt dim.. d caplock light is normal, n on closing d laptop it refuses to sleep as usual.. am suspect a flex-like connection but i need ur expert advice.. thankx.. n d system is hp630 tanx again

As per the sleep on closing the lid, it could be power options settings

OR

There is a button which the laptop lid (I.e cover) presses when you cover the laptop, that button is probably disconnected on the board and that is why it doesn't sleep when you close it.

The update files and some critical files may have been corrupted in the process of you just hard shutting the system.

You need to be patient so you don't even spend more time in fixing problems as compared to the time spent in waiting for the update to finish.

And let me ask which one is pure black is it the screen??

Check the dell battery meter, did you turn on "stop battery charging" ? If that is the case then uncheck the box.

Change the ram, you can also clean up dusts on the motherboard using soft brush. FEED ME BACK

it may not signify like that, different things may be wrong with the ram. also try and press "ctrl" + "alt" + "del" repeatedly (not minding whether it comes on or not) when you start it and see what happens.

What actually happened is that your hard drive is not properly fitted into its connector maybe it shook, therefore try and open the system, then refix or refit the harddrive properly into its connector. FEED ME BACK

This could be RAM or motherboard issues
Try changing the ram and give me feedback. (NB: not neccessarily buying ram, just find and use to test it)

OK, I have partition my HDD into 2 and I have window 7 and 8 in both partitions. I like to install Ubuntu inside window7 using wubi...... I have the Ubuntu 12.01

It doesn't work that way, the best method to do it are the steps I listed earlier on, just follow them. You may corrupt your boot mgr trying to use wubi.

The use of wubi won't work effectively like the steps i posted above. Just follow those steps and if you don't understand anything let me know.

If this does not solve it, you may need to buy replacement hard disk drive for your system. Just take the former one along and use it to find the replacement at computer village (if you are in Lagos).

Samsung around 250-300gb hdd, dual core, 2gb ram win 8 and some other specs and the battery lasts very well mind you its not mini.

0. Before carrying out the steps below ensure you create a partition you want to install the os by shrinking your current os partition and selecting the size you want to create in "computer management"
1. Insert the bootable disk into the disk drive
2. Boot from the disk (using one of the function keys)
3. Follow the os guide to install it, when you get to the options of how you want to install it. Select "something else"
4. Go to the partition you want install the os and and select "ext4" as partition table
5. Select the "/" also
6. Click "ok"
7. Make sure you change the partition to install ubuntu to the one you shrinked earlier on.
8. Click next, you should be able to do the rest alone.
